About us
The AI for Peace is San Francisco based nonprofit organization focused on studying and understanding the impacts of artificial intelligence (AI) and related exponential technologies on society. Our vision is a future in which AI benefits peace, security, and sustainable development and where diverse voices influence the creation of AI and related technologies. We are preparing peacebuilders with the mindset, knowledge and tools to embrace, research, guide and develop human-centered artificial intelligence, ensuring the creation of sustainable positive peace. We serve as a global open hub for social scientists, AI researchers, developers, users and policymakers who want to understand and leverage AI’s potential and impact. Our work focuses on three core domains: 1. Humanitarian action: we support and develop resilience, response, and recovery programs powered by AI and designed for those affected by humanitarian emergencies; 2. Human rights and democracy: our aim is maximizing the beneficial use of AI for the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy and minimizing the risks from intended and unintended development and use of AI; 3. Human security: we aim to leverage AI’s potential to protect human security and move away from focusing primarily on the safety of states to security of individuals, their protection and empowerment.

Born at 333ppm | Innovating digital ideas aligned with the five SDG pillars of people, prosperity, planet, peace, and partnership
While a lot of people are turning their attention to how ChatGPT affects agencies, marketing, and business operations (an area that Roy Murphy knows a thing or two about), I am researching more on how AI and Machine Learning can be used for more than just efficiency and how they relate to our projects at AndAnotherDay | Innovation Designed To Help® I have just finished reading AI For Peace by Branka Panic and Paige Arthur. It's a short book across five sections: - AI and conflict prediction - AI and hate speech - AI, human rights, and peace - AI, climate, and conflict - AI, peace, and ethics Each section covers the problems in the world, how AI can help and how it is actually being utilised already. It's good book that covers some amazing organisations and what they are doing to to make the world a better place. The books also highlights the issues with AI, the issues with bias in data collection, the regulations that need to be put into place for safeguarding human rights as the world changes. One worrying example is the 'dual-use application' where AI, that was created to develop medical drugs to help people, took less than six hours to invent 40,000 potentially lethal molecules for chemical of biological warfare - it's examples like this that demonstrates that "AI isn't good enough yet, my job is safe" is thinking too small about what is really going on. It's been a useful book and will be used as a reference for the types of projects we are working on. There are more in the 'AI for Everything' series which I will get at some point. #KeironsBooks #AIForGood #AIForPeace

And it’s a wrap ... we visited our first Mozilla Festival in Amsterdam! 🚀🤩 On Thursday, FemAI hosted a session on intersectional feminist AI. Payal Padhy and I co-facilitated it & loved every second of it! Why? 🧠 Around 25 curious minds from different backgrounds - including education, tech, civil society and journalism - showed great interest in our model of intersectional feminist AI and the use cases we brought with us. 🗣️ The participants engaged in an active debate to explore how they would apply an intersectional feminist lens to designing AI for hiring purposes. It was great to see the ideas that came up – including the need to address human biases in the design and application of AI, fostering diversity-oriented decidion-making with an „anti-pattern“, and even not using AI in the first place. 🥰 Last but not least, there’s something special about being in a setting where everyone shares a common passion for making technology, and our lives with it, a little bit better. It’s empowering, humbling, and inspiring all at once. 🫶🏻 Thank you Mozilla Festival for the unique opportunity to present our work and link up with others working for a more just future. We’ll definitely be back! ...missed our session? Don't worry! Shoot us an e-mail or DM to learn more about our work. #MozFest #TrustworthyAI #AI

📢 The forecasts from the VIEWS Prediction Challenge 2023/2024 are live! 📢 📋 The challenge: Seeking to enhance the potential of harnessing early warning for early action, we invited teams across the world to develop models that could forecast fatalities as a probability distribution over the outcome (number of fatalities from state-based conflict per the UCDP definitions) and thus help inform end users not only of what the most likely outcome would be at a given time and place, but also alert them to any low but alarming risks that may lie ahead. ✨ Launch of the VIEWS Prediction Challenge data dashboard: We are now thrilled to present the true forecasts for July 2024-June 2025 (accompanied by a test set for 2018-2023) from no less than 13 teams and 23 models, all ready to be explored on the brand new VIEWS Prediction Challenge dashboard! 💡 New resources: Explore the forecasts on the new dashboard, read the joint introduction paper, and delve deeper into each of the submitted models through the working papers from the participating teams. Humanitarian Data Projects / Custom LEGO®-based Model Designer and Animator (I know, it's a weird combo)
It's been a long road getting to standardized humanitarian data (and there's much work still to be done), but I'm so proud that we have launched the HDX Humanitarian API (HAPI). It's a way to access standardized indicators from multiple sources to automate workflows and visualizations, ultimately enabling faster, better decisions to help those who need it most. Our beta version covers 44 indicators across 25 locations. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gd3GiFNv OCHA Centre for Humanitarian Data

#UN adopts Chinese resolution with US support on closing the gap in access to artificial intelligence “Both the U.S. and Chinese resolutions focus on the civilian applications of AI, but Fu told reporters the military dimension of artificial intelligence is also very important. “We do believe that it is necessary for the international community to take measures to reduce the dangers and the risks posed by the development of AI,” he said. China is actively participating in negotiations in Geneva on controlling lethal autonomous weapons, Fu said, adding that some countries are considering proposing a General Assembly resolution this year on the military dimension of AI — “and we are in broad support of that initiative.” #AIResolution #AI #UN https://lnkd.in/eF_uqJ8r
