The City of Monmouth is excited to announce that it has been selected to receive a 2024 AARP Community Challenge Grant! With over 3,300 applicants this year, Monmouth is one of the 343 grantees selected from across all 50 states, Washington D.C, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.   These quick-action grant funds will be used to activate a pedestrian alleyway connecting Main Street and the Monmouth Senior Community Center. The goal of this project is to create a welcoming space for community members of all ages and abilities to enjoy Monmouth’s beautiful historic downtown. Providing places for visitors to spend time downtown was identified as a key goal in the 2042 Downtown Improvement Plan, and the City is thrilled to have AARP’s support to make these improvements. The City has hired a team of students and staff from the University of Oregon to create the designs for the space. Two temporary designs will be installed this summer with opportunities for the public to give their thoughts and feedback. In the fall, the team will use this feedback to create a proposal for a permanent design to be implemented in the future. Over the summer visitors can expect to see seating, plants, games, art pop-ups, and more. For updates, check out the project page on the City of Monmouth’s website as well as the City’s social media pages. “We are incredibly proud that AARP selected the City of Monmouth for this investment,” stated Monmouth Mayor Cecelia Koontz. “It’s a testament to our commitment to live the values signified by our AARP Age-Friendly Cities designation and to continue to partner on making our city an inclusive and accessible place for people of all ages and abilities.” About the AARP Community Challenge The AARP Community Challenge grant program funds innovative, quick-action projects that inspire change in areas such as public places; housing; transportation; digital connectivity; community resilience; and more. With additional funding support provided by Toyota Motor North America, the program is also increasing its investment in pedestrian safety projects that will improve streets and sidewalks, create vibrant pedestrian infrastructure, engage community members and much more. This is all part of AARP’s nationwide work on livable communities, which supports the efforts of neighborhoods, towns, cities and counties across the country to become great places for all. AARP believes that communities should provide safe, walkable streets; affordable and accessible housing and transportation options; access to needed services; and opportunities for residents to participate in community life. More Americans will turn 65 this year than at any time in history – and more of them are choosing to keep working. There are now five generations in the workplace, and employers would be smart to recognize the unique value that people over 60 bring to the table. From their mastery of the soft skills of management and interpersonal relationships to their adaptability after decades of having to learn new technologies, older workers can be a competitive advantage for companies that are not hampered by the tunnel vision of ageism. Check out my recent piece on this topic, published in Fortune. #Longevity #MultigenerationalWorkforce #OlderWorkers #Ageism
