Longlegs (2024)
I expected to see Nicholas Cage in a leading role but unfortunately he only played a tiny supporting role
I am a big Nicholas Cage fan and therefore I want to see every new movie with Cage starring in it, unfortunately his role was only tiny (a couple of minutes), but still absolutely hilarious and creepy, but his tiny role wasnt enough to make me wanna recommend this movie...
The bad; it's not a terrible movie for sure, but somehow it didnt spook me out, it didnt thrill me, it didnt surprise me, what's left then?
Well not much, there are SO MANY average or below average horror movies out there that I dont need to see another one. I did anyway and I have forgotten about it the minute I stopped watching it....
MaXXXine (2024)
This story started out promising, but turned into one big silly mess towards the end
The good: we have got some solid acting performances by some really good actors, who do convince me with their credible performance of their characters UP TO A POINT WHEN the story becomes giblledigook silly...
The bad: Ti West directed AND wrote this story. HE is to blame for this ridiculous storyline that really ruined the entire movie. The story starts out alright and the way the eighties are depicted looks true to life. Well done! But in the end this movie turns into a dud.
Some good, but ultimately disappointing because of several ridiculous plot turns at the very end (last 30 minutes) of this movie. Bummer.
The Monuments Men (2014)
A bit too tame, way too sentimental and lacking spark and punch
George Clooney directing and it shows, because of his slowburning, laid back kind of style, which brings me to what's not to like about this failed attempt at making a proper war movie...
The bad: this "war" movie is definitely lacking action and thrill. It starts out promising but then gets bugged down by TOO MANY tedious, soft sentimental scenes underscored by annoyingly repetitive sentimental music (simply TOO MUCH).
BEWARE: NOT suited for those who are into fierce fighting war movies, but perfectly suited for family viewing, because there isnt any scene that is too shocking for any familymember to watch, young or old...
Any good? We have got a bunch of great actors starring together. What's not to like about that! And it has got a feel good spirit of caring for art.
I blame Clooney' s soft and sentimental direction. This movie COULD have been solid and funny and supsenseful, but it ended up being nothing more than a sentimental dud!
Fly Me to the Moon (2024)
NOT funny (they overdid it). NOT romantic (Scarlet Johansson looks like Hillary Clinton for petes sake).
NASA is going down the drain in debt and in failures lately, so let's make a promotional movie about the golden glory days of NASA. COULD have been a fun quirky movie, but it has some serious shortcomings...
The bad: comedy is quite personal, but I didnt laugh once. Why not? Because they over did it. The jokes were too much in my face. But perhaps others wont mind that at all..
More bad: this is supposedly a budding romance between. Channing Tatum and Scarlet Johansson as well, but the latter actress (honestly) looks like Hilarry Clinton and any thought of romance goes out the window with that kind of look! Way too old looking for a romance with Channing Tatum!
Aint the story any good? The story is woke. The story is predictable. The story lacks real spark and punch. No good.
Not a terrible movie, but one that is quite bland and rather tedious to watch. Dont expect any fireworks.
Arcadian (2024)
Question. What is a horror movie that is NOT horrifying?
The bad: NOT a Nicholas Cage picture. So beware, all you Cage fans (of which I am one), he is only starring in a small supporting role.
More bad: What is horror without horror? What is a thriller without a thrill? What's the point of watching this movie if it does not scare me, does not shock me, does not make me feel anxious in any way?
This movie has nothing going for it. What is does have is INCREDIBLY DARKLY LIT photography. It's SO darkly lit that I often could not see what was happening. This dark lit photography is often used to cover up the fact that there is NO MONEY available for decent looking sets.
This is a nothing burger, which FAILS to become thrilling for a second.
Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F (2024)
Going through the motions of yet another average sequel. The action is lame, the jokes arent funny. It's boring to watch!
Needed there be a 4th sequel? Well, here it is anyway!
The bad: it's a rehash of everything we have seen before, but now directed by a certain someone who has only directed 4 videos before and it shows. This has all the earmarks of a cheap cash cow sequel.
This 4th sequel FAILS TO BECOME REALLY FUNNY. A smirk and a smile here and there was all I experienced.
The action is lame. NO thrill whatsoever. I really started to yawn during the "action" scenes.
This 4th sequel Eddie Murphy has become a dad who now wants to bond with his daughter (cop) who he hasnt seen for years. Together they fight the bad guys, but what they end up doing mostly is talk, talk and talk some more, which is getting quite BORING after a while.
All the earlier Beverly Hill Cop fans (me included) will be watching this sequel anyway, no matter how bad the reviews, but dont get your hopes up, this is nothing more but a boring cheap remake of a great original.
Better watch the BRILLIANT original "Beverly Hills Cop" (1984) instead if you havent yet seen it! (And if you already have, then watch it again, because it is a classic and BIG FUN!).
Boneyard (2024)
Dont for a second think this is a Mel Gibson picture, he only has got a small supporting role.
The only reason I started watching this movie was because I wanted to see a thriller/detective AND Mel Gibson was starring in it. Could this be worth a watch?
The bad: Mel Gibson only has got a small supporting role. We only get to see the guy a couple of minutes. Unfortunately the rest of the cast are B-movie actors, who simply can not act and it painfully shows. Not terrible, but way below par...
More bad: what's really annoying though is the fact that this story NEVER becomes thrilling or suspenseful for a second. I dont mind watching predictable B-movies, BUT they HAVE TO BE thrilling and this isnt. Not for a second! To be avoided!
The Company You Keep (2012)
A thoughtful, slowburning whodunnit with a bunch of terrific actors.
Robert Redford directing, producing and acting in this slowburning, intricate story about a bunch of youth war activists from the seventies, who are now in their old age and are still wanted by the fbi because one person died during one of their sixties peace actions against the war in vietnam. But till this very day it still is not clear who was responsible for the death of a bank clerk during this anti war protest action.
It's a cat and mouse game between Robert Redford and the fbi and Shia Labeouf as a nosey local journalist who is after a big scoop of catching these mysterious peace activists from the seventies who have been able to hide from the fbi for several decades.
The good: beware, this is a slowburning whodunnit, this is NOT an action packed thriller. But as a whodunnit story it is a rather well made one, with true to life characters, being performed by a bunch of terrific actors, whom the older generation will certainly know well (Susan Sarandon, Nick Nolte, Richard Jenkins).
A story about caring for the world without war, a story about caring for ones family and the choices one has to make between living for your ideals or protecting ones own family.
Kinds of Kindness (2024)
Incomprehensible and unnerving, yet simultaneously intrigueing to watch, BUT I LOST INTEREST halfway through...
This director has divided movie going audiences like no other. If you never liked to watch out of wack arthouse movies and dont like watching anyting that doesnt make sense, then my advice would be to definitely NOT watch this movie, but...
The good: ...BUT if you are a fan of this director's earlier work, OFCOURSE you wanna watch this very movie, because you already know you will be in for something special with this genius director in control.
This movie fascinated me from the start. And the leading actor, (who usually only stars in supporting roles), is perfectly cast for this disturbed character and he steals the show in a role that is quite unnerving and intrigueing to watch.
Emma Stone's role was small and supporting in nature at the start, but halfway through she became the leading actress of this incomprehensible story which is surreal to the max and divided up in several story segments that makes it even more difficult to follow and understand. And therein lies my biggest complaint...
The bad: This story is SO incomprehensible (like any other story by this director), that I wont be bothering you with an attempt to clarify the plot, but I will end by saying that I LOST INTEREST half way through this movie BECAUSE of the incomprehensibility of this story, which lasts a whopping 2 and a half hours.
Way too long.
Way too disjointed.
Way too incomprehensible.
Certainly not a terrible picture, but probably only suited for a niche crowd of arthouse movie fans, who can appreciate this kind of surreal and unnerving storyline with it's disturbed characters.
A Family Affair (2024)
NOT funny. NOT romantic.
Wow. Sometimes I pity myself. What terrible endurance I had to go through to watch this with my girlfriend who was grumpy at the end having watched it as well....
The bad: let's get things straight! What's a romantic comedy, when it is A (NOT FUNNY), B (NOT ROMANTIC)? Why watch it? Has it got any other undisclosed perks or features? NOPE.
This is just yet another one of many Netflix formulaic movies that has ZERO originality, ZERO spark.
Perhaps best be watched when you want to dump your girl (or boy) friend because after having watched this you will be guaranteed in a grumpy, terrible mood. The perfect mood for when you want to break up!
A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
What utter rubbish
A thriller needs to be thrilling. It is NOT. So what's the point of watching this movie? There is NONE. So dont watch it if your desire is to be thrilled.
Not any good then? It is not a terrible movie, but terribly boring it is. If you dont mind watching a below average disaster movie then go right ahead and watch it...
What's so annoying about this movie is that the leading characters lack charisma. Their is no chemistry or spark between them. They CAN"T act well.
And it is lit so incredibly dark, that most of the time one cant see very much. This is done more often in other cheaply made movies to hide the fact that there wasnt enough money to create thrilling looking sets.
What's even more annoying (for me personally) is the constant OVER use of a droning booming soundtrack AS IF the loud bass should constantly compensate for the lack of real thrill. As if to remind us THIS scene was extra scary, because the droning soundscore was extra loud as well.
What a BORE of a movie. If you wanna be thrilled, really thrilled then stay FAR AWAY of this flick!
Daddio (2023)
The flops made by Sean Penn just keep on coming...
The bad: having released one flop after the other the last decade, Sean Penn stars in yet another one...a quite boring one...
Why is it so boring? Because we ONLY get to see 2 faces in a cab for the ENTIRE movie chatting chitchat, which supposedly should excite me? Well, it didnt. There have been made some exquisite actor's movies in the past (Locke), with merely one or 2 actors talking in 1 small room, but this movie is just a failed attempt at copying such exquisite drama...
What an incredibly TEDIOUS picture. But it does confirm Sean Penn's solid reputation of making one flop after the other. HE DID IT AGAIN!
When will Sean Penn learn that it would have been better to simply retire from acting years ago? How many flops will Sean Penn have to make before he realises his career is over?
Suspect Zero (2004)
Great actors, but lame story without any real thrill
I am a Aaron Eckhart fan and I had missed out on this movie in the past, so I was all geared up for watching a solid thriller, but none of that...
The bad: Ben Kingsley is a terrific actor, but this time around he didnt convince me at all in his role as a mentally disturbed criminal. The opposite was true, his performance was rather laughable, because it just looked kinda silly and not believable at all.
More bad: Aaron Eckhart's performance is his usual, nothing out of the extraordinary, but this whole movie is seriously lacking in true suspense and thrill. It's just not there.
This movie has all the signs of a cheaply produced formulaic "thriller" that never becomes thrilling, never is original in any way. It's not terrible, but quite uneventful and tedious to watch.
Klute (1971)
Timeless classic. Pure Actor's movie. I am in awe...
Donald Sutherland just passed away this very week and one of his many masterful performances was his role in Klute as a determined, yet introvert private investigator. I hadnt seen this movie for years now and it was just as spellbinding as before...
The good: Alan J Pakula directing, the maestro himself. It is HE who turned this rather simple story into a subtle character portrait, which mesmirised me from start till finish. These 2 characters, (brilliantly performed by a marvellous Jane Fonda and Donald Sutherland), these 2 characters came across so real, so vulnerable, so imperfect, yet still so likeable and recognizable that I am just kinda lost for words to describe my admiration.
More good: "Prince of Darkness" photographer Gordon Willis (The Godfather), transcended an ordinary story into a work of visual art. The contrasts in light and dark are to die for! The symbiosis between the photography and the dramatic scenes was simply in perfect harmony, with a final scene that is just breathtakingly beautiful to watch! With on top of all that a unique soundscore that is so dark and eery, yet so fitting for the feelings of pain and isolation Jane Fonda is suffering from.
I am kinda lost for words to really describe well how much this movie means to me. I am failing as a reviewer in trying to describe the brilliance of it all, but I am in awe of having seen it!
French Connection II (1975)
Cringeworthy terrible sequel. Watch the MAGNIFICENT original instead!
The original from 1971 was a MASTERPIECE. A bleak, dark and raw brilliant American classic, which has stood the test of time to this very day.
This sequel however has all the earmarks of a FLOP...
The bad: what was absolutely terrific about the original was the RAW nature of it. It was dark and bleak and depressing. And wild and out of wack. The sequel however was the complete opposite, it was bland and predictable and even quite boring.
Some folks didnt like the original because it was too bleak, too depressing, without a hapyy end. But I loved it for that very reason. The sequel made me cringe a lot because of the bad acting performances and the total lack of thrill.
NOT recommended, not because the original was a magnificent American classic, but because even as a standalone picture this sequel bored the heck out of me.
Yong-eui-ja (2013)
Inferior Bourne copycat. Cheaply made with lots of mediocre acting performances.
This is nothing more than an inferior Korean cheaply made copycat of the Bourne series with Matt Damon.
The bad: the shakycam. The photography is absolutely annoying to watch, because of the NONSTOP OVERUSE of the SHAKYCAM. It destroys the entire movie. This terrible overuse of shakycam was copied from the original Bourne movies in which the shakycam usage was at least restrained somewhat, but they went overboard with the use of the terrible shakycam in this copycat.
Even the soundtrack is a cheap copycat, with the same repetitive soundscore. The whole story structure is exactly the same.
What's worse though is that there isnt any real thrill or supsense to be enjoyed and the actors are lacking in charisma and are basically B-movie actors.
And it lasts way too long. Although it has got tons of (shakycam) action, it still lasts too long, because even the action scenes began to BORE me.
NOT recommended. It's nothing more than a cheaply made Bourne copycat.
All Night Long (1981)
Great actors, bland and boring movie.
I cant remember (even if I did) that I had seen this Gene Hackman movie back in the eighties. Hackman strayed from his usual macho characters into comedy a few times during the eighties with mixed results...
The bad: it aint funny. It was never meant to be a laugh out loud comedy, not at all, it was meant to be more of an amusing, sarcastic portrait of a guy (Gene Hackman) who gets demoted and then has to deal with all the humilations that come along with having a cheap paying ordinary job. The second half of this movie is a romance with none other than Barbara Streisand! NOT a great romance for sure...
This is just one of those eighties movies that had lots of great actors, but failed anyway. Not terrible, but quite bland and boring and dated. Not recommended not even for the Gene Hackman fans, of which I am one...
Jung_E (2023)
The first hour NOTHING happens, but talk talk talk, only the 2nd hour has got some average action.
The first scenes (full of action) look promising, but that's it for the rest of the entire hour, NO acction, only talk talk talk. Quite boring to watch. And the characters are all stereotypes, no true to life characters and like other reviewers already mentioned as well, they try to inject some lame comedy elements which fall flat completely.
Not any good? It's a cheap surrogate of a scifi flick, which never really becomes thrilling, let alone be surprising or original in any way. The CGI effects are okay, but nothing extraordinary either.
It's a rahter bland scifi low budget tv movie and it shows in the characters, in the story and in the lack of thrill.
Ajeossi (2010)
Not a B-movie, but everything that COULD have turned out terrific, turned out to be a dud
Not terrible, but definitely not a success either...
The bad: this movie had all the potential to be a hardhitting crime drama, but it was cheaply made and it shows: LOTS of mediocre supporting actors, only the 2 leading actors are solid, but even their performances aren't groundbreaking in any way.
What about the action? At least the action is good right? The fights and shootouts are okay, but again with such mediocre acting performances even the good fighting choreagraphy is less impressive.
I did skip a lot of boring "dramatic" scenes, but even then I could not get excited about this cheap copycat. NOT recommended. There are MANY much better South Korean crime dramas out there...
Jipuragirado jabgo sipeun jibseungdeul (2020)
A lighthearted crime flick, which fails to really impress
The good: there is a lot of effort being taken to let all these characters come to life and they succeed at that. The characters make this movie worth watching.
We get to see many desperate ordinary folks breaking under financial debt and who out of the blue all (temporarily) become in the possesion of a BAG of money. Will they be able to keep it (NO) or are they destined to get wasted by those who the money originally belongs to? (YES).
The bad: this movie doesnt really ignite, doenst really thrill and it isnt very suspenful either. It's a slowburning, lighthearted crime movie, with some tongue in cheek humor now and then, but it isnt really funny either. It's defnitely not a terrible movie, but a rather slow and mellow one.
The good: the plot isnt very original, but there are some witty plot turns that make this movie worth watching till the end.
Mellow, slowburning, lighthearted crime flick, which is a bit slow, but still worth a watch.
Asura (2016)
The most gutwrenching, backstabbing, heinous viciousness I have ever witnessed!
Wake up world, wake up to one of the MASTERS of South Korean crime movies: director and writer Kim Sung-su.
This South Korean crime movie should be INSTANTLY (RE)released in the Western cinemas. This kind of cinema one often simply cant find anymore in the Western movie theatres, but the South Koreans keep churning out these crime masterpieces one after the other! Incredible.
What mastery! What gutwrenching human drama. What heinous, low life characters, yet still so humanlike and true to life. What overwhelming, vicious, over the top violence.
I cant believe this incredible crime drama has only gotten 17 reviews on Imdb, while it is one the very best South Korean crime movies that I have seen lately.
The synopsis doesnt begin to cover the explosion of human viciousness which this movie blasts upon us viewers, especially at the very end. Violence breeds more violence. And human depravity breeds more vicious and heinous backstabbing. Wanna witness this jungle of greed and misery in all it's dark "splendor", then please press play and witness ALL HELL BREAK LOOSE...
Gangcheolbi 2: Jeongsanghoedam (2020)
Ridiculous story and a severe lack of suspense and action crippled this movie.
The orignal Steel Rain was okay, not great but still quite okay, this sequel however has such a RIDICULOUS story that ruined the entire movie. But there is more wrong with this sequel...
The bad: it doesnt start out too bad, but when the first ridiculous plot turn comes, this movie cant be taken seriously any longer. What's worse though is the total lack of supsense and action. Nothing much happens the first 90 minutes, we only get to see boring submarine footage and boring boardroom meetings by government officials who all act below par.
Not any good then? Well, the 2 leading Korean actors are quite good, but they themselves cant lift up this ridiculous and boring movie.
Gangcheolbi (2017)
Okay, not extraordinary but still an okay political espionage movie
The Koreans have made far better, more intense and more true to life movies about politics and war than this particular one, but it'll do...
The good: this story about a military coup in North Korea with the danger of a nuclear attack on South Korea has got a lot of politcal content, but if you would not know.understand anything about the politics of North and South Korea this could still be an okay espionage picture to watch, but dont expect fireworks...
The bad: there is definitely some suspense and there are some solid action scenes as well, but nothing above average. There are too many dumbed down plot turns that make it hard to take this story very seriously, which deflates the little supsense there already was. But the actors do perform well and it is they who make this movie okay to watch, provided you are into this political Korean movie genre...
Not terrible, but definitely nothing extraordinary either...
Bohoja (2022)
Unknown terrific Korean gem!
Wow! I have been surprised AND delighted with watching several SUPERB Korean action crime movies the last couple of weeks and I must declare (!) that the South Korean directors and writers and actors are absolute masters at making these intense, true to life, riveting and dramatic gangster flicks!
The good: all these actors were (formerly) completely unknown to me, but what terrific acting performances they delivered, what charismatic actors they are, what great chemistry they have got. There are so many things to praise about this movie that is completely overlooked however on Imdb (with only 5 reviews!) Incredible!
Please somebody, anybody out there in the world of cinema distribution, please (RE)release these magnificent Korean crime dramas to the Western movie audience. They will LOVE it. They will EAT it up. Such high quality crime dramas! With only so few people who have seen it. ( I can only put blame on the terrible Corona epidemic with it's theatres closed for years for this dreadful lack of worldwide distribution)
Any bad? No! However the basic storyline of "A man of Reason" isnt particularly original, because this (father saves daughter) story has been told many times before, BUT the way in which it is told is simply superb! With true to life dialogues, with nailbiting supsenseful plot turns, with riveting over the top action and with a magnificent direction of such high quality.
I am in AWE!
Bravo!
Seoul-ui bom (2023)
Another unknown Korean gem!
I have recently been watching one after the other terrific Korean movie. Why? Because unknown to many Western movie goers (me included until recently) the Korean movie industry is without a doubt one of the very best creators of intense, true to life dramas. They dont come much better than this!
This movie is all about Korean politics and war history. Not knowing anything about Korea's history didnt prevent me from being thoroughly impressed by this storyline though about ONE exceptionally brave and patriotic army commander who single handedly tried to stop a military uprising against the government. Not kiddin'.
What intense drama! What glorious characters. What evil and wicked treachery. What a sad and demoralising final. What a blast to watch!
Highly recommended for the fans of Korean cinema and also for those who are into fierce and unrelenting, war dramas.
