Ancient Aliens (2009)
Enough of this one!
This show is like junk food, that does a good job at filling you up but in addition to a full belly, you get a bunch of toxic stuff detrimental to your mind and body.
Instead of history education, Ancient Aliens will only make people turn further away from science and towards conspiracy mania. And I'm not the type who thinks conspiracies don't exist. Conspiracies are a natural byproduct of civilization and human relations. I also believe ET intelligence exists, but the way this show makes it all appear is comical and slightly dangerous.
You will learn a snippet or two about history in this show, but there's this noise of "ALIENS!" smeared on top of all of it. It contains countless people telling us to "question everything" and "what if" but then paint this image of the world where EVERYTHING throughout human history was influenced by extraterrestial intelligence. And I do mean everything.
They pick every possible major and minor event and object throughout history and explain it heavily through the lens of their ET paradigm. It's as if humans themselves are completely incapable of building great structures or create fancy artifacts. The tunnel vision of some of their chosen 'experts' is baffling.
And I'm confused about the creators intention when it comes to the show's presenter, Giorgio A. Tsoukalos. If they really meant to appear serious and believable they would not bring in someone with such a wild hairstyle to be their main guy. And I don't hate on the hairstyle or the guy. I'm pointing out that zany looks like that will only make a ton of people make fun of both the presenter and the show AND the ideas they are presenting. It does NOT help in getting the ideas taken seriously.
But I think the producers know that and have simply decided to go for the fun factor only.
Which is fine and dandy, fun is good, but Ancient Aliens does have that attempt in it, by virtue of passionate believers, to pass everything as evidence of their beliefs and trying to disregard and
warp scientific knowledge and achievements.
This is not "innocent fun"
I'm hoping that the rating of 7.1 does not illustrate the rating givers' belief but rather the junk-entertainment loving part of them.
Dinotopia (2002)
Would have been alright 10 years earlier
First of all I'm quite astonished at the decent rating this one has. Because as I watched it, It seemed exactly like the type of old TV/DVD movie that would get a rating around 4.5 at best.
Secondly I'm just as surprised at the year it was made. The visuals and acting in it remind me of series such as Hercules, and Xena (and those were very charming), yet feels even older and cheaper. I cannot believe this is an apparently 80 million dollar budget effort from 2002!
But the most annoying/confusing thing about Dinotopia is the soundtrack. There is background music playing nearly the WHOLE time, no matter how mundane of a scene is going on. Just bizarre. Seriously, about 95% of the runtime has background music.
The positive: the dino character Zippo is very cute and charming and David Thewlis is always fun to watch.
Naked Attraction (2016)
Ballsy and necessary
For a flashy and seemingly silly adult TV show, Naked Attraction has a whole lot of heart and realism going on. They had every chance in the world to make it just another utopian dating show thing where they only choose ridiculously perfectly attractive looking 20-something people, but nope, 90% of the time, contestants here look like regular people from streets, shopping malls, construction sites and what have you.
And they are inclusive of sexualities, ages, skin colours, body types, shaved and not shaved, people with medical issues, and they don't make it seem forced in that "you/we must be WOKE now!!" at all. The show is just naturally chill about things. I love that. Men having average sized/shaped penises and same with women's breasts.
Another very important point: they never make it seem as if this sort of strategy, naked before dating, is some kind of a magical way to a beautiful relationship. No, I'd say a good 80% of the couples that I've seen there don't go much further than their first date. They make sure to tell us that in the end of the episode that they never met again or didn't quite vibe or there was too much long-distance etc. There's no embellishment, just how real life works.
One thing though puzzles me. From the countless episodes of different countries I've seen so far, there's a HUGE portion of contestants who have tattoos. I don't have a thing against tattoos, but I don't get how MOST people there are inked and many of them heavily.
I have to say that at some point the British version went too.. American with the silly tasks and gimmicks the contestants had to go through. And they made it seem as the next person sent out was sent out because they didn't do yet another dumb dance move well enough or put whipped cream on their dong the right way. That concept was not an asset for the show at all. If you want this show, but a bit more down to earth, check the other countries' versions.
So yeah, I've been a bit of a fan fan for a couple of years now. The first version I saw of the show was the original British one. Since then, on the local tv station here I've also watched the German, Danish, Finnish and Italian versions. I highly recommend watching those too if possible. There's a whole lot different dynamics. Interesting to see the obvious differences in behavior of contestants, and hosts, of different countries.
Ellen's Game of Games (2017)
Soulless and dated
Just another soulless and LOUD game show. This type of shows shouldn't exist anymore, it's early 2000's stuff. It's so painfully 'american'.. (and I do like the USA). Insulting to both the contestants and the viewers.
Often it seems Ellen doesn't really want to be there. Reminds me of her Design Challenge TV show where she barely showed up on screen at all. It's like the producers don't even intend for her to have something of substance to do on the TV shows and just slap that famous name of hers onto it all.
I give 2 stars instead of 1 because Ellen does have a personality and stage presence potential in her and doesn't deserve to have it wasted on these lame lame shows.
