Stephen Colbert kicked off Monday’s live edition of “The Late Show” with a pre-taped opener (shot around 7 p.m. Et) discussing the weekend assassination attempt on Donald Trump, before going live with his monologue, commenting on the first night of the Republican National Convention as previously planned.
“The United States came close to a great tragedy on Saturday, when at a political rally down in Pennsylvania, a 20-year-old gunman shot and nearly killed a former president and the man who today became the 2024 Republican nominee. My immediate reaction when I saw this on Saturday were horror at what was unfolding, relief that Donald Trump had lived, and frankly, grief for my beautiful country.”
Colbert noted that the attempt led to the death of a rally attendee — and he noted that, just like after other past U.S. shootings, he decided to start the show with a somber opening behind the desk.

Jon Stewart and the team from “The Daily Show” will be staying close to home during the Republican National Convention.
After planning to cover the event with a satirical lens in host city Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the Comedy Central mainstay canceled its plans Sunday and noted the show would hold forth instead from its usual base in New York City. Monday’s broadcast of the show, typically hosted by Stewart, will not air, and the late-night series will pick up Tuesday through Thursday.
Saturday’s assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump appears to be the issue. A message posted via Instagram and X offered “apologies for the inconvenience,” citing “logistical issues and the evolving situation in Milwaukee” for a “need to reschedule our events on the ground in Wisconsin.” A spokeswoman for the show did not elaborate on the statement.

For nearly 15 years, the Minions have been gracing the silver screen, dating back to the original "Despicable Me" in 2010. In the years since, a multi-billion-dollar industry has sprung up around the little troublemakers, from anchoring Illumination's slate of animation to tons of merchandise; they're basically little yellow pieces of gold. The Minions are set to once again prove their worth as "Despicable Me 4" will open in theaters just in time for the Fourth of July holiday. With the help of Steve Carrell's Gru, we are likely going to see one of the year's biggest box office debuts.
"Despicable Me 4" will hit theaters on Wednesday, July 3. Universal Pictures is releasing it mid-week to get in on the long holiday weekend. Across the five-day Wednesday to Sunday stretch, the film is expected to pull in at least $100 million, per Deadline. That is pretty much in line with more recent industry estimates,...

Trevor Noah went out with a bang on “The Daily Show.” After seven years behind the anchor desk on the comedy news series, he stepped down at the end of 2022, and then won the 2023 Emmy for Best Variety Talk Series. Did he take the awards mojo with him, or will “Daily Show” prevail again in 2024?
After Noah’s exit the series cycled through a series of celebrity guests. Then the correspondents started taking turns as host. And in February came the return of the man who could be key to the show’s Emmy fortunes: Jon Stewart. When Stewart originally hosted the show from 1999 to 2015, he created an awards dynasty: “The Daily Show” won Best Variety Series 11 times. Then he passed the baton to Noah, but a new dynasty started elsewhere: “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver” began its winning streak in 2016 and hasn’t lost the top program award since.

The fact that the 76th Emmy nominations voting round ended on Monday means that Gold Derby’s users have had over 10 days to make their picks in five categories that were previously not included in our predictions center. After taking very little time to form, these new consensus lineups have remained virtually unchanged for nearly two weeks, presumably because they generally consist of tried-and-true contenders and almost exclusively align with the prospect of repeat wins.
Based on the predictions of all 3,000 of our participating readers, the only major change that has occurred in the five new categories since voting opened is “Top Chef” presenter Kristen Kish’s displacement of Gordon Ramsay (“Next Level Chef”) in the Best Reality/Competition Host lineup. A closer examination of the opinions of our predictor subgroups reveals more discrepancies, including that our editors stand alone in still backing Ramsay and forecasting a second consecutive Best...

The State of the Race
The Outstanding Talk Series category was initially projected to only have three nomination slots this year, which would have been a huge bummer, because the primary issue people have with it is that it’s just more of the same every year.

“After Midnight,” the late night show hosted by comedian Taylor Tomlinson, has been renewed for its second season at CBS.
The series is a revival of “@Midnight,” which was hosted by Chris Hardwick on Comedy Central from 2013 to 2017. Like its predecessor, Tomlinson’s show features celebrity guests as they compete in pop culture and internet trivia games. “After Midnight” premiered in January and airs directly after “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” with Colbert serving as an executive producer.
Tomlinson recently spoke to Variety about vying for a Season 2 renewal — and what that would mean for the TV landscape, given that she’s currently the only female host in late night TV.
“It feels like pressure when people ask me about it,” she said. “Should I be more worried about that? I’m more worried about how we get a second season so that this crew of people gets to keep working together.

Universal Pictures has released the new trailer and poster for Despicable Me 4, which will open in theaters on July 3, 2024. The fourth installment has been rated PG by the MPA for action and rude humor.
In the first Despicable Me movie in seven years, Gru, the world’s favorite supervillain-turned-Anti-Villain League-agent, returns for an exciting, bold new era of Minions mayhem in Illumination’s Despicable Me 4.
The film follows the 2022 summer blockbuster phenomenon of Illumination’s Minions: The Rise of Gru, which earned almost $1 billion worldwide.

Watch most comedians long enough and you’ll start to hear the same stories. But watch Stephen Colbert long enough and you’ll always find he has a new reason for audiences to fall in love with his wife, Evie.
On Sunday, April 21 at The Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, California, “The Late Show” host and Ben Schwartz closed out PaleyFest LA 2024 with a wide-ranging and goofy Q&a that included Colbert retelling some of his career-best stories while gently negging his interviewer’s questioning style.
“I will tell you a question I have been asked before,” Colbert quipped, turning Schwartz’ first prompt back on the actor in a good nature. “It’s ‘What’s a question you haven’t been asked before?'”
“And Ok, we’re going to the next question, you guys!,” Schwartz said with a laugh.

This week’s Feinberg Forecast includes 11 categories that were not a part of last week’s, including those covering writing (drama, comedy, limited or anthology series, variety series, variety special and nonfiction program), reality programs (structured, unstructured and competition), game shows and animated programs. It is also the first edition to include Netflix’s Baby Reindeer, which has exploded since its April 11 debut, has officially been entered for Emmys consideration as a limited series and will seriously contend in several categories.
Over the past week, L.A.-area members of the TV Academy have been surrounded by — and, in many cases, invited to — high-profile FYC or FYC-adjacent events. Stephen Colbert is taking “The Late Show” on the road.
The late-night program will broadcast live from Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre during this year’s Democratic National Convention, also taking place in Chicago, from Aug. 19-22 on the CBS Television Network. “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” will also be available to stream live and on-demand on Paramount+.
Colbert announced the news on Wednesday night’s episode of “The Late Show.”
“I lived in Chicago for 11 years, and it holds a special place in my heart — and not because of all the Polish sausage lodged in my aorta,” Colbert said. “Chicago is where I cut my teeth performing at the Second City, and it’s also where this South Carolina boy got an education in winter. Did you know that tears can freeze?”
In a statement, Colbert said, “I am very excited to broadcast from the beautiful Auditorium. I started my career in Chicago,...

Greg Gutfeld isn’t your typical Fox News personality. But he is turning in to something that is more traditional at the Fox Corp.-backed cable outlet.
Fox News is expected to announce that it recently closed a deal with Gutfeld to extend his contract, a move that spotlights the host’s importance to the network’s operations even if he isn’t in the mold of a Sean Hannity or Laura Ingraham. Under the pact, Gutfeld will continue his co-hosting duties at the roundtable show “The Five” as well as his 10 p.m. program, “Gutfeld!,” a looser take on the issues of the day that marks a bid by Fox News to woo the younger TV viewers who might watch late-night programs such as “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” on CBS or “The Daily Show” on Comedy Central. The third anniversary of the 10 p.m. program arrives Friday.

Jon Batiste is tackling dual responsibilities with Jason Reitman’s forthcoming feature that will focus on the opening night for NBC’s long-running sketch series Saturday Night Live.
Batiste will compose the score for the Sony Pictures film SNL 1975, and he will also appear in the movie as keyboardist and singer Billy Preston, who was the show’s first musical guest when it debuted Oct. 11, 1975. Centering on the behind-the-scenes moments leading up to that initial broadcast, Reitman’s film stars Gabriel Labelle as series creator Lorne Michaels, Cooper Hoffman as former NBC exec Dick Ebersol and Rachel Sennott as Michaels’ ex-wife and former SNL writer Rosie Shuster.

Carol Burnett reflected on the time she guest starred on “The Ed Sullivan Show” the same day as Elvis Presley.
As a guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” promoting the Apple TV+ series “Palm Royale,” the 90-year-old Burnett was prompted to look back at her legendary career in television. Since she guest starred on “The Ed Sullivan Show” seven times, Colbert asked Burnett if she ever interfaced with the “big names” that took the stage.
“I was on when Elvis was on, when he was in the army. And they did a whole big thing when he was in the army on the stage,” she said. “And they put me on first. Nobody wanted to see me. It was Elvis. ‘Where the hell is Elvis?’ I bombed. Oh my god, it was terrible. It was awful.”

Kate Middleton, as the spouse of Prince William and the future queen consort, has been less visible in public recently. Kristen Stewart has responded to critics of her recent Rolling Stone cover, which prompted controversy upon its release.
As a guest on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” Stewart was asked why she believes the cover, which shows her with her hand inside her jockstrap, has received such negative attention. Colbert initiated the conversation after revealing that CBS did not want him to show the cover on his show.
“Now before I show this cover, I just want you to know and the audience to know that I think it’s a perfectly lovely cover,” he said. “We were asked by CBS not to show it. They thought that would be not a good idea for us to show this, and I don’t know understand why. Because there’s the cover, right there,” he said, turning it around to face the audience.

CBS’ record-setting Super Bowl audience gave a lift to the network’s late-night lineup in February 2024, as The Late Show with Stephen Colbert and its lead-out After Midnight both earned wins in key audience measurements.
CBS’ The Late Show with Stephen Colbert was the No. 1 show in all of late-night for the month, both in total viewers and in P18-49 viewers, according to live-plus-seven Nielsen data for February 2024 across 12 original episodes.
That represents a +4% bump in total viewers and a +1% bump in P18-49 viewers from Jan. 2024, but -5.5% in total viewers and -3% in P18-49 viewers vs. February of last year.
CBS’ After Midnight hosted by Taylor Tomlinson averaged the most P18-49 viewers of the 12:37 a.m. late-night shows, but finished behind ABC and NBC in the timeslot in total viewers. The program debuted in January 2024.

Andy Samberg is heading to PaleyFest LA.
The comedian is joining his old friend Seth Meyers at the event to toast the ten year anniversary of NBC’s Late Night.
Samberg and Meyers are old pals, the pair worked together on Saturday Night Live. Samberg regularly appears on Meyers show and the latter often calls up Samberg during his YouTube series Corrections for impressions. Samberg also seems to have a feud going with Meyers’ dog Frisbee.
Late Night with Seth Meyers launched on February 24, 2014. It is produced by Universal Television and Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video and is exec produced by Michaels, Meyers and Mike Shoemaker.
The group will be at PaleyFest LA on April 15 at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood.
Elsewhere on the lineup, Apple TV+’s The Morning Show will kick off the annual TV celebration with a screening and conversation with stars and executive producers Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon.

The series premiere of “Tracker” reached an average 18.4 million viewers on CBS on Sunday.
Titled “Klamath Falls,” the episode hit this height thanks to massive lead-in from Super Bowl Lviii, which aired directly beforehand and became the most-watched telecast of all time, hitting an average viewership of 123.4 million people. “Tracker” retained at least 15% of the game’s audience.
It should be noted that the Super Bowl stat accounts for viewership across CBS, Paramount+, Nickelodeon, Univision, CBS Sports and NFL digital properties, while the “Tracker” figure refers only to CBS viewership and will soon increase when data becomes available regarding viewership on Paramount+, CBS.com and the CBS app.
“Tracker” wasn’t the only show to benefit from the Super Bowl’s success: “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” aired next and reached 3.7 million viewers, its best viewership since 2021, while “After Midnight” followed and hit a series high of 2 million viewers.

The 76th Directors Guild of America Awards took place on Saturday, February 10 at 7:30 p.m. Pt with Judd Apatow hosting the in-person, non-televised ceremony. These kudos honored the best helmers of the year in movies and television, as voted on by more than 18,000 members of the directing guild. Scroll down for the 2024 DGA Awards winners list in three film and eight TV categories.
As always, the all-important feature film category is one of the most telling bellwethers for the eventual Best Director Oscar. The guild and the academy have only disagreed for Best Director eight times over the past seven decades, with the last three years lining up perfectly for Daniel Kwan & Daniel Scheinert (2022’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once”), Jane Campion (2021’s “The Power of the Dog”) and Chloé Zhao (2020’s “Nomadland”).
This year, just three of the DGA’s nominees also reaped directing Oscar bids: Yorgos Lanthimos...

Christopher Nolan "always wanted" to work with Robert Downey Jr. before casting him in 'Oppenheimer'.The director has admitted he was a longtime admirer of the actor before handing him a role in the atomic bomb blockbuster - which earned him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nominations - and Nolan says he wanted Downey Jr. in the cast because of his "incredible generosity of spirit".During an appearance on 'The Late Show With Stephen Colbert', Nolan explained: "With anybody you work with, with actors … you’re looking for some kind of connection emotionally, empathetically."You’re looking for some kind of generosity. He [Downey Jr. ] has this incredible generosity of spirit. It means when he’s in a scene with other people he’s making sure they are all doing their best, that they are all able to bring their best to the table. He’s helping them clarify those emotional connections.

But this is a very different sort of show not focused on the world of messy corporate politics, instead taking place inside a European palace and an authoritarian regime.

Spoiler alert: Taylor Swift’s boyfriend is playing in the Super Bowl next month.
Ok, assuming today wasn’t the first time you got internet access, that’s probably not a spoiler. But you might be among those who are hand-wringing over exactly how the Queen of Pop could pull off getting to Las Vegas for the Big Game on February 11 when she has a concert in Tokyo the night before.
It’s simple math — just ask The West Wing.
During an episode of the Aaron Sorkin-created NBC drama’s Emmy-winning second season, a group of high-level West Wing staffers are trying to figure out when President Bartlet will return from Tokyo back to Washington, D.C. That would be Deputy White House Communications Director Sam Seaborn, Press Secretary C.J. Cregg, Deputy Chief of Staff Josh Lyman and Communications Director Toby Ziegler.

Auteur Martin Scorsese has confirmed that one of Robert De Niro’s most memorable ‘Taxi Driver’ lines was improvised. The scene in question features De Niro, as New York City night shift taxi driver Travis Bickle, imagining a confrontation that would invite him to threaten someone with a gun, reports People magazine.
“You talkin’ to me?” he repeats, gazing at himself in the mirror. “You talkin’ to me? Well I’m the only one here.”
“He was improvising it,” Scorsese, 81, told Stephen Colbert on ‘The Late Show with Stephen Colbert’. “We were behind schedule. We were in such trouble.”
As per People, the Oscar winner’s fellow producers were “mad”, urging the director to cut and move on from the scene, he recalled.
Instead, he encouraged De Niro’s ad-libbing. “They were banging on the door and I had to go to the door, open the door and say, ‘This is good.
