NBC's "The Office" may now be considered one of the most beloved sitcoms in television history, but when the network first announced its plans to produce an Americanized version of the critically acclaimed BBC series, the reaction from fans of the original was far from joyous. Ricky Gervais and Stephan Merchant's "Office" was spiky and profane in a way that network shows simply couldn't be (thanks to their companies' Standards and Practice watchdogs). It was also narratively compact, running a mere two seasons and 14 episodes (counting the two-part Christmas special), which kept the show from getting stale. Most of all, it just felt kind of perfect (which Gervais proved when he tried to revive the series himself). A U.S. rendition stretched out over 20-plus episodes per season was bound to pale in comparison.

The much-loved series The Office has gifted fans with countless memorable moments and backstage stories. But one intriguing tidbit is the revelation that Bob Odenkirk, renowned for his roles in Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, was a contender for the role of Michael Scott, eventually played by Steve Carell. This piece delves into why Odenkirk believes he didn’t land the iconic role. Bob Odenkirk’s Reflection on The Office Role On a recent episode of the Office Ladies podcast, hosted by Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey—known for their roles as Pam Beesly and Angela Martin—Odenkirk reflected on his experience auditioning...

Few sitcom characters have become more firmly entrenched in pop culture than Steve Carell’s Michael Scott on the American version of “The Office.” But modern television history could have been altered forever had the casting process broken slightly differently. After the likes of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti turned down the role, producers also considered casting Bob Odenkirk as Michael Scott. But the “Better Call Saul” star, who later went on to appear in an episode of the show, is at peace with how it all played out.
In a recent appearance on the “Office Ladies” podcast, hosted by “The Office” stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey (via The Hollywood Reporter), Odenkirk reflected on losing the iconic role. Rather than be bitter, he explained why Carell was a better fit than him to play the famously bumbling boss.

Scarlett Johansson’s latest film Fly Me to the Moon has opened with some good response in theaters. The film follows the relationship between a marketing specialist, played by Johansson, and the NASA director in charge of the Apollo 11 mission, played by Channing Tatum. With the talents involved, fans would be surprised to know that neophyte Rose Gilroy was tasked with writing the screenplay.

However, Rose Gilroy is not just any writing newbie. Writing is imbibed in her DNA as she is the daughter of screenwriter Dan Gilroy and granddaughter of playwright Frank D. Gilroy. Her mother is actress Rene Russo. However, the big names associated with her did not make it any easier for her to land her gig with Johansson.

Fly Me to the Moon director Greg Berlanti doesn’t think of himself as a director first and foremost. He’s a storyteller with a keen sense of how he can best serve a project, be it as a producer, writer or director. In the case of Fly Me to the Moon, the New York native had been talking about working with Scarlett Johansson for some time, and the opportunity to helm a hijinks-filled romantic comedy-drama that’s set in and around the Apollo 11 Moon landing was something he couldn’t resist.
His reasoning for signing on was also the polar opposite of why he chose to direct his previous comedy-drama, Love, Simon (2018), which chronicled the coming out story of teenager Simon Spier. (The critically acclaimed hit paved the way for Hulu’s spinoff series, Love, Victor.)

The Prime Video series adaptation of Criminal, the Eisner Award-winning graphic novel series written by Ed Brubaker and illustrated by Sean Phillips, has been steadily building up its cast in recent weeks, and now Variety reports that the latest actor to join the ensemble is Luke Evans, whose credits include Fast & Furious 6, Beauty and the Beast, Dracula Untold, and the Hobbit films. For Criminal, Evans is taking on the role of “Tracy Lawless, who was pushed out of the outlaw life of his family (his father is the legendary Teeg Lawless and Ricky is his little brother) at the age of 18 when a judge gave him a choice of prison or the military. In the Army, Tracy thrived, his wild outlaw instincts getting funneled into the strict discipline of the military. He was placed into the Special Forces and trained to be an expert in covert operations and guerilla warfare.

It’s easy to assume that a screenwriter with the last name Gilroy had an effortless foray into show business, but that was anything but the case for Fly Me to the Moon’s Rose Gilroy.
As the daughter of Dan Gilroy and Rene Russo, as well as niece to Tony and John Gilroy, Rose attempted to steer away from the family business by trying her hand at pre-med and pre-law trajectories during college, but neither option ended up being in the cards for her. Upon graduating Colgate University in 2016, she then modeled for a stretch, but it soon became apparent that writing was in her DNA as well. After all, she’s also the granddaughter of the late Frank D. Gilroy, who won a Pulitzer and a Tony for his 1965 play, The Subject Was Roses.
So she started writing scripts, including a psychological thriller called The Pack, which is...

Bob Odenkirk has a healthy outlook on being runner-up for a once-in-a-lifetime gig as the regional manager at a small paper supply company on The Office, as well he should — if Odenkirk spent a decade at Dunder Mifflin, he probably wouldn’t have ever gotten that law degree.
More than most sitcoms, The Office (U.S.) has a whole hypothetical culture surrounding the “What if?” casting decisions that led to a collection of mostly unknown actors making their big breaks on the lauded NBC sitcom, thanks, in large part, to the many surviving audition tapes of the also-rans. The online and active Office fandom is constantly theorizing what the show would have looked like if Seth Rogen landed the role of Dwight instead of Rainn Wilson, or if Kathryn Hahn beat out Jenna Fischer for Pam, possibly to play out the famed will-they-or-won’t-they romance plot line with Adam Scott’s Jim.

Domo arigato, Mr. Bob O. We all know Steve Carell as Michael Scott, but before he landed the role of World’s Best Boss at Dunder-Mifflin, several other names were in the running. But one standout is Bob Odenkirk, who had a comedy background to be sure but admits his particular style wouldn’t have fit The Office.
Appearing on Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, Odenkirk explained why he didn’t get the lead role on The Office, which would eventually land Steve Carell six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. “I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy. I am oddly earnest, and…it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role.” He added that Carell has a leg up – hopefully...

Bob Odenkirk has an idea of why Steve Carell ultimately landed the role of Michael Scott in The Office over him.
The Emmy-winning actor, who was a frontrunner for the lead role in the beloved sitcom, recently appeared on the Office Ladies podcast, where he chatted about the show as well as his decision to transition to more dramatic roles.
“I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy,” Odenkirk explained to hosts Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey, who played Pam Beesly and Angela Martin, respectively. “I am oddly earnest, and … it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role [in The Office].”
“There were other parts that I think I was up for that Steve got, and it’s because he’s better at being genuinely fun,” the Better Call Saul actor continued.

Producers of the Western movie Rust may have to forgo a robust economic incentive as they try to sell the film to distributors and fulfill financial obligations to the immediate family of a cinematographer who was fatally shot by Alec Baldwin during rehearsal in 2021.
New Mexico tax authorities denied an application this spring by Rust Movie Productions for incentives worth as much as $1.6 million, according to documents obtained by the Associated Press. A late July deadline for producers to appeal the decision is approaching.
Meanwhile, Baldwin is scheduled to go on trial starting next week on an involuntary manslaughter charge in Halyna Hutchins’ death. The lead actor and co-producer of Rust was pointing a gun at Hutchins when it went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza.

It turns out there’s a cost associated with delving into moral ambiguity. But who knows? Maybe sorrow is the key to a performance deserving of an Emmy!

Bob Odenkirk is unarguably one of the most talented actors in the entire entertainment industry, having worked in masterpieces among the likes of the Better Call Saul television series. But when it comes to getting appreciated by the Academy, he has been left holding on to mere nominations, never really making it to the winning stage. And as it turns out, he isn’t the only one.

Netflix co-ceo Ted Sarandos cut the ribbon on a major expansion of Netflix Studios Albuquerque and said the facility has racked up nearly $900 million in total investment in New Mexico production since 2019.
The company launched the hub in 2018, marking its first purchase of a production studio complex. This one included eight sound stages on 28 acres with productions that included The Avengers, Breaking Bad, and Sicario. It’s the only complex Netflix owns outside one currently being developed in Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.
The larger facility featuring four new soundstages, three mills, one production office, two stage support buildings, and two dedicated backlot areas across 108 acres, is an expansion that “will enable us to enhance our creative output and produce even more compelling films and series for our global audience, further solidifying our commitment to nurturing and growing the thriving production ecosystem in New Mexico.”

The murky world of Silicon Valley is to be the backdrop for AMC’s latest original.
Jonathan Glatzer, who has written on series including Succession and Better Call Saul, is writing the untitled series, which has been handed a series order.
The series is set inside the bubble of Silicon Valley, amid misguided corporate cultures, moony innovation labs and cutthroat private high schools. It is centered around a rift between a self-appointed “inventor of the future” tech CEO and his self-serving “performance psychologist”, who are engulfed in a scandal sparked by the exploitation of personal data.
Glatzer was a producer on AMC’s Better Call Saul, a supervising producer on HBO’s Succession and a co-exec producer on Apple’s Bad Sisters.
It is produced by AMC Studios.

AMC is heading back to Silicon Valley, this time via an untitled drama series from “Succession” and “Bad Sisters” writer Jonathan Glatzer. The project, from AMC Studios, has been given a greenlight by AMC and sister streamer AMC+.
In ordering the series, AMC Networks’ Dan McDermott, the president of entertainment and AMC Studios, called the show a “captivating, enthralling, authentic look behind the curtain of Silicon Valley.”
Glatzer previously worked on AMC’s “Better Call Saul.” This reps the first show he’s created that has been picked up to series.
“Jonathan is a massive talent and AMC is lucky to be the home of this, his first series creation brought to life,” McDermott added. “The show, which chronicles the lives of characters creating the world we will all inhabit, is right here and right now. Truth is stranger than fiction, especially here.”

AMC, which chronicled the early days of Silicon Valley in its series Halt and Catch Fire, is headed back to that part of the world.
The cable network (and sibling streamer AMC+) have ordered a series set in present-day Silicon Valley, centering on the falling out of a tech CEO and someone in his orbit. Jonathan Glatzer, who has written episodes of Better Call Saul and HBO’s Succession, created the as-yet-untitled series and will serve as its showrunner. AMC Studios will produce.

Exclusive: Spenser Granese (Little Death) has landed a role opposite Kiernan Shipka, Kiefer Sutherland and Krysten Ritter in Stone Cold Fox, the ’80s action thriller marking the directorial debut of Sophie Tabet, on which we were first to report.
The revenge tale watches as the defiant Fox (Shipka) breaks out of an abusive commune in search of her family, but when the queenpin (Ritter) kidnaps her little sister and sends a crooked cop (Sutherland) after her, Fox has no choice but to infiltrate the very place she escaped.
Granese plays Ricky, the devious right-hand man to Ritter’s villainous Goldie. A man who loves the sound of his own laugh, Ricky is famous for doing Goldie’s bidding, namely kidnapping Shipka’s younger sister and taking her back to their seedy commune, setting the film’s plot in motion.

Giancarlo Esposito, known for his portrayal of the menacing Moff Gideon in the hit Star Wars series “The Mandalorian,” has sparked excitement among fans by hinting at a potential return to the franchise. During a red carpet interview for his upcoming film “MaXXXine,” Esposito addressed speculation about his character’s fate and possible appearance in the upcoming movie “The Mandalorian and Grogu.”
When asked about reprising his role as the Darksaber-wielding villain, Esposito coyly replied, “Anything is possible.” While he clarified that he currently has no concrete information about a return to the Star Wars universe, the actor expressed his enthusiasm for working with “The Mandalorian” creator Jon Favreau and executive producer Dave Filoni again.
“I don’t know anything about it at present, but I put out there that if they need me, I’ll be there,” Esposito told Deadline. “I love what Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Disney...

Hallmark Channel and the Kansas City Chiefs have capitalized on the extra attention from Travis Kelce and Taylor Swift’s high-profile relationship by teaming up for a Christmas movie titled Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story.
Starring in the made-for-tv film are Tyler Hynes (Letterkenny), Hunter King (The Young and the Restless), and Ed Begley Jr. (Better Call Saul). It will be shot entirely in Kansas City, including the Chiefs’ Geha Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

To be fair, Holiday Touchdown: A Chiefs Love Story is hardly a carbon copy of Kelce and Swift’s romance. “Alana Higman (King) is sure that her family’s lifelong history as Kansas City Chiefs superfans makes them a frontrunner to win the team’s ‘Fan of the Year’ contest,” reads the official logline. “Derrick (Hynes), Director of Fan Engagement, is tasked with evaluating how Alana and her family stack...

It's not every day we can start a story by telling you we have exciting news about nobody — but today we most assuredly do have exciting news about Nobody. As reported by Deadline, Bob Odenkirk has closed a deal to return as government-assassin-turned-family-man-turned-assassin-again Hutch Mansell in Nobody 2, the forthcoming sequel to Ilya Naishuller's rollicking 2021 geriaction thriller. And what's more, Indonesian action-horror filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto has been tapped to direct.
Whilst Tjahjanto's hiring marks Naishuller's departure from the Nobody franchise, John Wick creator and writer Derek Kolstad — who penned the first film — is back for the follow-up, having written the sequel's screenplay alongside Aaron Rabin (Jack Ryan), Odenkirk, and Umair Aleem (Kate). As for what we can expect from Hutch's return, plot details remain tightly under wraps at present. However, as you may recall, the first film's tantalising post-credits sting saw Hutch — having just seen off the Russian mob...

This is a very exciting time for action cinema. Movies like "John Wick" have brought a new appreciation in American cinema for meticulous choreography and cartoon physics that make each set piece larger and wilder than the ones that came before them. Indie filmmakers like Adil & Bilall are similarly playing in the big studio space, while there's now unprecedented access to action movies from around the world, with filmmakers from countries like Indonesia leaving their mark on the genre. Indonesia, in particular, has seen some of the best action movies of the past decade, and it also gave us perhaps the most exciting voice in the genre working today — Timo Tjahjanto.
To quote our own Bj Colangelo, Tjahjanto "has never made a movie that didn't, at minimum, totally rip," whether it's his short films in "V/H/S/2" and "The ABCs of Death," his Sam Raimi-inspired movie "May the Devil Take You,...

Writer Derek Kolstad will be returning, with Universal earmarking an August 15th, 2025 release date.

Ed Begley Jr. has been Hollywood’s most famous environmentalist for nearly four decades, and now his daughter Hayden is helping him bring his message to Gen Z.
Starting in 2020, Hayden Begley began posting funny videos of her mom (actress Rachelle Carson-Begley) and dad on her TikTok account, which currently has more than 200,000 followers. In 2023, she posted a “seven days of only taking public transportation in Los Angeles” video series, which culminated in the father-daughter duo taking the Metro to the Oscars; that video surpassed 2 million views.
“Once I realized I had built somewhat of a platform, I wanted to use it for good and try to put a good message out there besides just my funny family’s antics,” Hayden, 24, says of the videos. Ed has famously taken the Metro to Hollywood events for years, along the way instilling the importance of public transportation in his daughter from a young age.
