“Shōgun” led the 40th Television Critics Association Awards on Friday with four wins, including Program of the Year.
The FX show prevailed in every category in which it was nominated as it also won drama series and new program, while Anna Sawai defeated co-star Hiroyuki Sanada for the gender-neutral Individual Achievement in Drama prize. Sawai is the ninth consecutive woman to win the award.
With five nominations apiece, “Shōgun” co-led nominations alongside “Baby Reindeer” and “Ripley.” “Baby Reindeer” won limited series/TV movie/specials, but “Ripley” went 0-5. “Baby Reindeer,” “Ripley,” two limited series, and three-time nominee “Fargo,” an anthology series, were inexplicably nominated in both the limited series/TV movie/specials category and the drama category.

FX’s critical and streaming hit, “Shōgun.“

The Television Critics Association (TCA) has unveiled the winners for its 2024 awards ceremony.
The 40th annual TCA Awards honored outstanding programming from the 2023-2024 TV season, with “Shōgun” taking home a league-leading four wins including the top prize, the Program of the Year Award. The FX on Hulu series was recently renewed for Seasons 2 and 3.
The winners were selected by the TCA’s membership of more than 230 professional television journalists from across the United States and Canada. Fan-favorite shows “Hacks,” “Baby Reindeer,” and “Doctor Who” also won numerous awards, as did docuseries “Quiet On Set: The Dark Side Of Kids” and reality show “The Traitors.”
“It was a year of brilliant television, from an epic historical drama to a harrowing documentary,” Jacqueline Cutler, TCA president, said. “We’re thrilled to honor all who created these shows, often against great odds, as many were worked on during the pandemic and stopped for the strikes.

It’s been quite a long wait, but the Television Critics Association’s annual TCA Awards returns to an in-person event this year for the first time since 2019. After the Covid-19 pandemic and last year’s Hollywood strikes turned everything virtual for five years, the 40th annual TCA Awards takes place at the Langham Pasadena on July 12, during the half-way point of this summer’s TCA press tour.

Another successful limited series is becoming an ongoing drama series — Apple TV+ has ordered a second season of legal thriller Presumed Innocent, with David E. Kelley, J.J. Abrams and Season 1 star Jake Gyllenhaal returning as executive producers and author Scott Turow as co-executive producer.
The news comes a month into the run of Presumed Innocent, which already has become the #1 most viewed drama of all time on Apple TV+, per the streamer, as the story is headed into its conclusion with the final two episodes dropping July 17 and July 24.
There are no details about Season 2 beyond the fact that it “will unfold around a suspenseful, brand new case.”
Like other hit limited series that became drama series, including White Lotus and Shōgun, there likely will be character(s) who link the seasons; we may get more clarity on that in the Season 1 finale.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, less than a week out from nominations, we discuss possible shockers.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back for the final time in Phase 1 before Phase 2 becomes all about how many different ways we can say “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer” are favored to win big in, respectively, the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. I’ll miss these lazy months of informed speculation when I could convince myself that Chloe Guidry and Archie Panjabi are legitimate contenders for Emmy nominations for their striking work on “Under the Bridge.” We made our “final” 2024 Emmy nominations predictions this week and what stood out to me in the aftermath is how little we had in the way of disagreement. Kommenden Mittwoch werden die Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Spot blickt auf die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten und nennt weitere Anwärter auf den so begehrten TV- und Streaming-Preis.
Favoriten (v.l.): „The Bear“, „Rentierbaby“ und „Shōgun“
Am 17. Juli werden die 76. Primetime-Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 15. September statt.

Voting to determine the nominees for the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards concluded at 10 p.m. Pst on June 24. Next week, on the morning of July 17, we will learn the full list of nominees. I will post my final predictions after the weekend but before the announcement. But for now, the standings below reflect where I think the race currently stands.
As you can see, I think that we are poised for yet another year in which, despite living in the era of Peak TV, the noms will be dominated by only a handful of shows from only a handful of platforms: among them, FX’s drama Shōgun and comedy The Bear and Netflix’s limited series Baby Reindeer and Ripley.
There are some wild-cards to consider, though, especially among dramas. In a year with few returning contenders, could rookies like Amazon’s Fallout, Netflix’s 3 Body Problem or Showtime...

Earlier this year, “Succession” garnered a whopping 15 Primetime Emmy nominations: a bid for Best Drama Series and 14 for acting. The HBO show from Jesse Armstrong became not just the most-nominated drama of the year but the most recognized show that year, while the 14 acting bids tied its own record from the previous year.
But how about this year? Does any show have a chance of getting close to the dizzying heights of “Succession?” Well, probably not. But we’ve combed through our odds chart to work out which of the shows in contention for Emmy nominations will garner the most bids. We’re going to go through drama, comedy, and limited series/TV movie separately and here we’ll start with drama. Below, we ranked our predicted Best Drama Series nominees in order of least predicted total nominations to most.

The 2024 Emmy nominations announcement being just one week away means that Gold Derby users have been shaping the odds in the 12 main acting races for over five months. At the end of June, eight of the initial dozen frontrunners could be credited with maintaining their top positions all season, but the same now applies to only six of them, all but one of whom are men.
The lone female February frontrunner left standing is Elizabeth Debicki (“The Crown”), whose victory on her second consecutive drama supporting actress bid seems quite assured. As of this week, she is generally expected to be joined in the winners’ circle by two-time comedy lead champ Jean Smart (“Hacks”), who started the season on top before being usurped by Ayo Edebiri (“The Bear”) a few weeks in. Now, two months after winning the favor of our Top 24 Users, Smart is every Gold Derby predictor subgroup’s first choice.

On the surface, there doesn’t appear to be much profit for Disney in a new bundle with Max and Hulu.
As anyone who has been following the streaming world in 2024 knows, bundling is the wave of the present, and likely the future. Providers are searching for ways to keep customers engaged with their platforms as prices rise, and bundles can offer meaningful discounts on services that viewers were likely to stack anyway. Disney+ and Hulu are already available together for $9.99 in the Disney Duo Basic bundle, but the two services will join a new streaming product this summer when they combine with Max in a new offering. But is that a wise move on Disney’s part? New data from Ampere Analysis suggests perhaps not, as Warner Bros. Discovery seemingly has a lot more to gain from the arrangement than Disney does.
Key Details: Upsell opportunities for the new bundle will greatly favor Wbd,...

Network shows also gave viewers some all-time great TV shows, setting a high standard to beat.
This year, FX’s historical drama series Shōgun and Netflix miniseries Baby Reindeer became the most talked-about shows in a long time, dominating conversation at every social gathering. We have to give a special shout to Issa López’s True Detective: Night Country( Number 15 on Rotten Tomatoes) and Amazon’s Fallout (Number 16), which failed to make the top 5 but was one of the best shows TV had to offer this year.

Adaptation du best-seller éponyme de James Clavell. The Dawn of a New Era Set in Japan in the year 1600, Lord Yoshii Toranaga is fighting for his life as his enemies on the Council of Regents unite against him. This backdrop of political intrigue and cultural tension forms the core of Shōgun, a series that has captured the imagination since its recent debut on Hulu. The arrival of a European ship, marooned in a nearby fishing village, sets off a chain of events that are both thrilling and thought-provoking. There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.
The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.
So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

Over the weekend, my phone blew up with texts from TV comedy writers who were in the middle of watching the latest season of The Bear. Some were enjoying the new episodes, others were frustrated by them, but not one person said this story of toxic workplaces, addiction and mental illness, and ruinous personal relationships was a barrel of laughs — this despite the fact that FX, Hulu, and Emmy voters everywhere continue to consider it a comedy. As one writer put it, “I like the show a lot, but it...

“The Wire.” “The Hour.” “The Affair.” “The Crown.”
Dominic West has been a television mainstay for more than two decades now, but would you believe he has never received an Emmy nomination throughout his entire career? Luckily, that seems poised to finally change.
As of this writing, 14 out of Gold Derby’s 17 Experts from major media outlets are predicting that West’s Emmy curse will finally be broken with a Best Drama Actor nomination for Season 6 of “The Crown.” The English actor hopes to follow in the footsteps of Josh O’Connor, who won a lead acting Emmy in 2021 for his portrayal of Prince Charles on Netflix’s regal drama. West took over the role in Season 5 and continued playing the real-life royal until the series finale in December of 2023.

The Bear debuted with rave reviews in June 2022. Since then the first and second seasons have left fans feeling an unlikely conundrum of feelings that involve rage, delight, shock, and amazement. The fact that the 76th Emmy nominations voting round ended on Monday means that Gold Derby’s users have had over 10 days to make their picks in five categories that were previously not included in our predictions center. After taking very little time to form, these new consensus lineups have remained virtually unchanged for nearly two weeks, presumably because they generally consist of tried-and-true contenders and almost exclusively align with the prospect of repeat wins.
Based on the predictions of all 3,000 of our participating readers, the only major change that has occurred in the five new categories since voting opened is “Top Chef” presenter Kristen Kish’s displacement of Gordon Ramsay (“Next Level Chef”) in the Best Reality/Competition Host lineup. A closer examination of the opinions of our predictor subgroups reveals more discrepancies, including that our editors stand alone in still backing Ramsay and forecasting a second consecutive Best...

George R.R. Martin’s sprawling epic world, the one of A Song of Ice and Fire, has hundreds of named characters, with entire stories in a footnote. Martin’s style of writing often references events and characters in the story, a lot of which fail to make it into the adaptation of his work. A slew of key characters seems to be missing from the show, given that every adaptation needs to balance its budget with the narrative it has at hand. While characters can number in the hundreds in the books, the show needs to make do with a core cast, the absolutely important characters in the books,...

Last year, the nominees for both Best Drama Guest Actor and Best Drama Guest Actress were drawn from just two shows: “The Last of Us” and “Succession.” The former reaped a lucky seven nominations while the latter nabbed five. We don’t think any show will manage to snag that many nominations across these two drama guest acting categories this year but we do think one show will land more bids than any other: Amazon Prime Video’s “Mr. And Mrs. Smith.”
The spy-thriller series, created by Donald Glover and Francesca Sloane, is a reboot of the 2005 movie starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Glover stars in the lead role opposite “Pen15” actress and creator Maya Erskine. The two multi-hyphenates feature as a pair of spies (John and Jane) who must pretend to be a couple and complete missions together. The episodes each depict the stages of a relationship through the prism a spy thriller.

The astounding success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe has served as a launchpad for a great many number of actors in Hollywood. A lot of them have gone on to be highly successful in their film careers. But there have been times when an actor’s full potential was overlooked, giving their characters stunted growth and ultimately depriving the fans of a full-blown arc. Quite surprisingly, Hiroyuki Sanada is listed among them.
Hiroyuki Sanada as Yoshi Toranaga in Shogun | FX
Currently ruling the television circuit as a promising Emmy contender with his FX series Shōgun, Hiroyuki Sanada is perhaps one of the most famous Japanese performers of the current generation. And the MCU completely wasted his talent in its biggest movie so far, Avengers: Endgame.

Disney’s “Star Wars” shows have delivered plenty of Emmy nominations so far, with the likes of “The Mandalorian,” “Andor,” and “Obi-Wan Kenobi” all garnering bids at their respective Emmy ceremonies.
“Ahsoka” is looking to join these shows by securing Emmy bids of its own and lead star Rosario Dawson looks to be the show’s best chance at a nomination. “Ahsoka” is a continuation of the animated series “Rebels,” and follows Dawson as former Jedi padawan-turned-rebel Ahsoka, who is trying to unravel the mystery behind the disappearance of Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). The role of Ahsoka was originated by Ashley Eckstein, who voiced her in both “The Clone Wars” and “Rebels.” Dawson then took over the role in live-action form when she appeared in one episode of season two of “The Mandalorian” as well as an episode of “The Book of Boba Fett.”

“The Crown” has been a consistent Emmy contender since its first season debuted on Netflix in 2016. Last year, its sixth season premiered on the streaming service, bringing the drama to a conclusion once and for all. We expect this season to be a big hit with Emmy voters once more and several stars could benefit from that attention, including Queen Elizabeth actress Imelda Staunton.
Staunton took over the role from Olivia Colman, who in turn inherited the character from Claire Foy. Staunton joined the show in season five and, in season six, she provided her best performance as Queen Elizabeth yet. This season takes place between 1997 and 2005 and depicts the death of Princess Diana (Elizabeth Debicki), the premiership of Tony Blair (Bertie Carvel) as Prime Minister, and the wedding of Prince Charles (Dominic West) and Camilla Parker Bowles (Olivia Williams). Critics agree, Staunton is excellent again as she leads the line as Queen Elizabeth.

FX's historical drama series "Shōgun" has rightfully earned high marks, including for its recreation of 1600 Japan. Would you believe the show was actually shot on sets built in Vancouver? I certainly didn't, but it's true.
"Shōgun" has begot endless comparisons to "Game of Thrones." Like in Westeros, battles in the series are most often waged via conversation, not sword fights. Language is a dominant theme of "Shōgun," with the show often underlining the contrast between strict Japanese decorum, even among enemies, and the brutal physical violence those enemies inflict on each other. Even the ending of "Shōgun" is an anti-climax designed to surprise those expecting an epic battle.
When battles do erupt, though, they're as bloody as you'd expect Samurai clashes to be. Episode 4, "The Eightfold Fence," ends with a squad of soldiers being ambushed with a blast of cannonballs; the men and their horses collapse into piles of gore.

Emmy nominations voting began on June 13 — the same day that the TV Academy posted on its website the full list of certified contenders for each category, providing confirmation of which contenders were/weren’t officially submitted/accepted, and, after a bit of mathematics and cross-referencing, precisely how many nominees there will ultimately be in each race.
Voting continues through 10pm Pst on June 24, and then the lame-duck waiting period begins, as we won’t find out the nominees until July 17.
See below for my latest assessment of all major categories.

Colin Farrell has had a stellar few years, turning in exquisite performance after exquisite performance in a variety of projects from deadpan comedy movies such as “The Lobster” and “The Banshees of Inisherin” to a transformative turn in the superhero flick “The Batman.”
Farrell has delivered another enigmatic performance with the Apple TV+ detective series “Sugar.” In this neo-noir drama, Farrell plays private investigator John Sugar, who delves into the mystery surrounding the disappearance of Olivia Siegel, the granddaughter of a famous Hollywood producer. Farrell is as magnetic as ever in, wielding his natural charisma and captivating screen presence with ease while also sowing in the sort of sad, lamentable quality that he displayed in “The Banshees of Inisherin,” a film that earned him his first Oscar nomination (for Best Actor). Critics have applauded Farrell for his turn in “Sugar.”

The epic FX series “Shōgun” lives and dies in the smallest moments and details. The series thrives due to its painstaking approach to telling authentic stories with heavily researched, period-accurate costumes, sets, wigs and even plot narratives. Each crew member labored over every single wig, sword, choreographed step and or piece of dialogue while adapting James Clavell’s novel of the same name.
So it’s no real surprise when “Shogun’s” climatic fight between main character Toda Mariko (played by the brilliant Anna Sawai) and a bevy of guards isn’t a wire-work piece of spectacle, but rather, a guttural painful act of defiance and desperation for our hero. In fact, the very premise of this fight sequence is (on the surface) quite simple: a woman tries to leave.

Spoiler Alert!Spoilers for Episode 1 of House of the Dragon Season 2
Every fan who has read George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood was certainly waiting for that scene in House of the Dragon Season 2 where Blood and Cheese go after Helaena Targaryen’s son, Jaehaerys.
Phia Saban in House of the Dragon / HBO Entertainment
There were major changes in this episode that disappointed viewers, but what’s more devastating was the execution. Brutality is a huge part of the world of Game of Thrones, but this particular violence against children is something that cannot be ignored.

In the first episode of House of the Dragon Season 2: A Son for A Son, Rhaenyra Targaryen (Emma D’Arcy) mourns the death of Lucerys Velaryon and demands the head of Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell). Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) would later...

Last Thursday marked the beginning of the annual 11-day period during which members of the TV academy cast their ballots for the Primetime Emmy nominations. Since there are fewer candidates in practically every category compared to last year, there are also fewer nomination slots up for grabs. Indeed, performers eligible for half of the 16 main acting awards must now fight harder to officially compete for them.
Those who were immediately cut from Gold Derby’s predicted acting lineups once the ballots dropped were supporting players Allison Janney (“Palm Royale”), Bowen Yang (“Saturday Night Live”), Holland Taylor (“The Morning Show”), and Mark Duplass (“The Morning Show”), non-continuing program leads Naomi Watts (“Feud: Capote vs. The Swans”) and Tony Shalhoub (“Mr. Monk’s Last Case”), and drama series guests Sharon Horgan (“Mr. & Mrs. Smith”) and Jonathan Pryce (“Slow Horses”). Yang had broken into the comedy featured male lineup just a few hours earlier,...

Before “Shōgun” entered the Outstanding Drama Series race, there was not a demonstrable Emmy frontrunner. Sure, “The Crown” has won before (netting Netflix its first win in the category), but it seems both critics and viewers fled from the prestige period piece’s farewell season.

The TV years are just flying by at this point. For some of us, it feels like only yesterday we were watching Succession take home precisely every award at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. For others, yesterday might as well have been the airing of the Red Wedding on Game of Thrones. And for some incomprehensibly ancient creatures, we … I mean they fondly recall watching the Lost finale in their college dorm. The point is that things move fast on television. If you don’t slow down for a minute, you might miss all of it.

When Donald Glover first approached showrunner Francesca Sloane about adapting “Mr. & Mrs. Smtih” for Amazon Prime, she “started laughing,” and thought it was a “weird Donald Glover joke that he randomly spit out.” She was confused as to why he would pick the 2005 action-comedy of all movies, but as the conversation evolved, the project began taking shape in her mind.
“We discussed why people get married, what is it like to fight for somebody, how would it be to take this big blockbuster hit and use our sensibilities of quiet moments and filter that throughout the series,” Sloane explained. “And also, what is it like to have a woman run and write this show in such a masculine-charged genre? Blade Runner 2099 has officially cast Hunter Schafer in a co-lead role.
We recently learned that Michelle Yeoh had signed on to play one of the two female leads in Prime Video's sci-fi series, and Variety has now confirmed a recent rumor that The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes star is set to join her.
The trade doesn't share any official plot or character details, but according to reliable insider Daniel Richtman - who broke the news of Schafer's casting last week - the Cuckoo and Euphoria star looks set to play Cora.
The previously-released plot synopsis revealed a little about this character (could she be a former Blade Runner?), who will join forces with a Replicant named Olwen (Yeoh).
"In Los Angeles 2099, Cora lived her entire life on the run, a chameleon forced to adopt numerous identities. To secure a stable future for her brother, she...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, with ballots out and voting underway, we’re taking a look at drama.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Emmy voting is happening right now and we’re here to continue the conversation we started Thursday about the 2024 ballots — this time focused exclusively on the drama categories. No big surprises here, unless you count Alexander Skarsgard not being submitted for guest actor on “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” a “big surprise,” but this year’s submissions helped clarify that the race is really simply a battle between three shows with one huge frontrunner well ahead. In fact, as you mathed out for us, if “Shōgun” hadn’t moved here from the limited series race, the drama lead acting races would be stuck with...
