Steven Spielberg, the master auteur, had somewhat of a crash course in the interdependent working relationship between a director and the studio quite early on in his career. Despite his natural expertise and ingrained talent for producing cinematic masterpieces, Spielberg is not entirely immune to box office failures.

The director of the aquatic thriller, Jaws, and sci-fi alien film, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, had ridden the wave of success and glory for far too long to realize that without studio interference, a project can sometimes go downhill too. And Spielberg was quick to learn that on the evening of the premiere of 1941.
Steven Spielberg and His Radical New Hollywood Era
No studio production enters the final theatrical lineup without the absolute say-so of the higher-up execs. The Hollywood of today is entirely guided by the principle of equal collaboration between the suits and the creatives.

For Tom Hanks, his long-time partnership with esteemed Hollywood director and producer Steven Spielberg began as a cautionary tale. He had seen enough actors and directors starting off as friends, working together on a project, butting heads on set, growing resentful over their creative differences, falling out, and ending up in a fraught relationship. Hanks didn’t want that to happen with him and Spielberg.

However, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step and that was the mentality Hanks chose to adopt in his first attempt at a collaboration with Spielberg on Saving Private Ryan. Suffice it to say, the end result was so revolutionary that the pair ended up working together on multiple projects in multiple capacities over the course of the next 26 years (and counting).

Darren Aronofsky's next movie, Caught Stealing, has nabbed itself another A-List powerhouse actor to lead its increasingly starry line-up. Following the news earlier this week that Zoë Kravitz is in talks to join Austin Butler in The Whale filmmaker's latest, today Deadline have reported that Academy Award winner Regina King has signed on to help bring Aronofsky's buzzy crime thriller to life.
Based on Charlie Huston's books of the same name, the mother! director's film — adapted for screen by Huston himself — will see Butler star as Hank Thompson, a burnt out former baseball player. Things get hairy for Hank when he finds himself unwittingly embroiled in the Big Apple's criminal underground and left fighting for survival on the downtown streets of 90s NYC. Further details on the direction Aronofsky's movie will take remain under wraps for now, as does info on how King and Kravitz will factor into things,...

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, less than a week out from nominations, we discuss possible shockers.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back for the final time in Phase 1 before Phase 2 becomes all about how many different ways we can say “Shōgun,” “The Bear” and “Baby Reindeer” are favored to win big in, respectively, the drama, comedy, and limited series categories. I’ll miss these lazy months of informed speculation when I could convince myself that Chloe Guidry and Archie Panjabi are legitimate contenders for Emmy nominations for their striking work on “Under the Bridge.” We made our “final” 2024 Emmy nominations predictions this week and what stood out to me in the aftermath is how little we had in the way of disagreement. Kommenden Mittwoch werden die Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Spot blickt auf die aussichtsreichsten Kandidaten und nennt weitere Anwärter auf den so begehrten TV- und Streaming-Preis.
Favoriten (v.l.): „The Bear“, „Rentierbaby“ und „Shōgun“
Am 17. Juli werden die 76. Primetime-Emmy-Nominierungen bekannt gegeben. Die Preisverleihung findet am 15. September statt.

Tom Hanks, the actor who defined an entire generation and influenced the pop culture of an era, had a hard time accepting work from one of the greatest directors of Hollywood. Almost 3 decades down the line, it seems unforgivable to think we nearly missed Saving Private Ryan or Band of Brothers because of a near-superstitious belief on the actor’s part.

While Spielberg established himself with an unassailable career arc comprising such movies (and franchises) as Jaws, Indiana Jones, Jurassic Park, and Schindler’s List, the privilege of being directed by the Hollywood legend is akin to no other experience within the industry.
In hindsight, it was obvious that Hanks and Spielberg would end up collaborating on projects more than once, and come out the other end all the better for it.

In the film, Jack (Apa), quick witted, charming, and avoidant, finally risks opening his heart when he starts dating Jillian (May); what he never expected was that his best friend Johnny (Renaux) would fall for her too. Details as to the roles to be played by Laird and Jarrett weren’t disclosed.

Masters of the Air premiered this year on Apple TV+, but although it was the biggest release in the history of streaming, few know that the production is part of a war trilogy produced by Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks. One of them, and one of the most notable, is Band of Brothers.

Although the series was highly acclaimed, it also served as a great catapult for the success of a name that would go on to star in other renowned projects: Damian Lewis.

If there is any agreement among Emmy pundits this awards season, it’s the fact that perhaps the most competitive collection of categories surrounds the limited series genre, where an embarrassment of riches promises a dogfight among an abundant list of worthy nominees in Best Limited Series and the four limited/made-for-tv movie acting lineups. During a limited-focused slugfest debate in advance of the Emmy nominations announcement on July 17, Gold Derby senior editors Denton Davidson, Marcus James Dixon and Daniel Montgomery and news and features editor Ray Richmond were all in agreement that Gold Derby pacesetter “Baby Reindeer” is a worthy frontrunner that’s likely to ultimately take the top limited prize (assuming it is in fact nominated). But they were all over the map on how the rest of that category shaped up as well as how the performer slots were poised to shake out. While there are a...

Set against the war-torn backdrop of World War II, Masters of the Air – based on Donald Miller’s book of the same name – depicts the plights of the 100th Bomb Group, widely dubbed the Bloody Hundredth, and the brotherhood forged by veterans in the trenches of despair.

The miniseries – executive produced by Band of Brothers creators Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks – serves as a companion piece to the acclaimed 2001 HBO war drama as well as 2010’s The Pacific.
As heart-rending and emotionally cogent as Masters of the Air may be, however, it seems to have fallen short of the expectations that its venerated predecessor surpassed oh so effortlessly.

Get ready to take a deep dive into terror with The Last Breath, the latest shark-infested horror film from acclaimed Swedish director Joachim Hedén. Rlje Films has just released the official trailer for this white-knuckle thriller, set to debut in select US theatres and on VOD on July 26, 2024, and 1st July in the UK and Ireland.
The Last Breath tells the harrowing tale of a group of divers who find themselves trapped in the wreckage of the USS Charlotte, a WWII battleship lost for 80 years. Their adventure begins with the excitement of a once-in-a-lifetime dive but quickly spirals into a nightmare as they realise they are not alone in the underwater labyrinth. Surrounded by great white sharks and with their air supply dwindling, the group faces a desperate fight for survival.

HBO’s Band of Brothers has numerous reasons for being successful and relevant to this day – but one of the most crucial reasons remains the series’ insistence on staying true to the events in history. With a background of extensive research (enough to break one’s back), the creators of the World War epic spared no expense in bringing the tale of the Easy Company to light.

Equipped with first-hand accounts, letters, journals, interviews, historians’ documents, etc., Erik Jendresen set out with an ambition to voice a piece of history that would seem too fantastical even for a television drama. However, it was one genius aspect of the show, thought of by Steven Spielberg himself, that helped to suspend the suspension of disbelief from episodes of the series.

There may have not been as much television in 2024 so far as in previous years, but there was a Hell of a lot of great TV in the first half of this year.
The harsh beauty of FX’s Shōgun, the depths of Baby Reindeer and Big Mood, the wit of Diarra from Detroit, and the surprising scope of X-Men ’97 set a very high standard. The icy reset that is the Issa López created True Detective: Night Country was another such high. Add to that the historical script flip of The Sympathizer, the sometimes brutal honestly of Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show, Diane Lane and Jeff Daniels’ masterclass in A Man in Full, and the barrier drop kicking of Echo.
So, if you are looking for some true creative fireworks this Independence Day, may I suggest casting your eyes over our selection of some of the best new shows of 2024 so far.

And just like that, 2024 is already half over. Crazy, isn’t it? It feels like Christmas was just a minute ago, but here we are in the middle of summertime. Before we know it, the fall festivals will open up, the awards race will begin, and people will start debating the year’s best movies.
But here’s the thing – whenever people start talking about the best movies of the year, they always neglect all of the films that came out in the first half of the year. Studios know this, which is why high-profile, prestigious movies always bow in the fourth quarter of the year. So, to give these movies a bit of a spotlight, we here at JoBlo have decided to list the 10 best movies of 2024…so far (in no particular order).

Austin Butler is just like us — he also gets starstruck by Ryan Gosling.
The Oscar-nominated actor made an appearance on the Today show Thursday, where he revealed that a run-in with the Barbie star made him so nervous that he couldn’t even introduce himself.
“I was just telling a story yesterday about getting starstruck by Ryan Gosling recently. It’s when you don’t expect to see somebody — so I saw him outside of a hotel that I was staying in, and I had to go into another door,” Butler recalled. “I couldn’t even say hello. When host Savannah Guthrie reminded the Elvis actor that he’s also a star, he responded, “I know. But that doesn’t feel real.”

Emmy nominations voting began on June 13 — the same day that the TV Academy posted on its website the full list of certified contenders for each category, providing confirmation of which contenders were/weren’t officially submitted/accepted, and, after a bit of mathematics and cross-referencing, precisely how many nominees there will ultimately be in each race.
Voting continues through 10pm Pst on June 24, and then the lame-duck waiting period begins, as we won’t find out the nominees until July 17.
See below for my latest assessment of all major categories.

Five years ago, Austin Butler’s memorable supporting role in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood turned out to be his audition for leading man status, and he’s since become not only a leader on set but a leader on Hollywood’s new A-list.
Coming off of Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air and a villainous role in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, Butler is now back on the big screen in Jeff Nichols’ long-awaited 1960s crime drama, The Bikeriders. And while Butler led the star-studded ensemble alongside Jodie Comer, he plays a character named Benny who absolutely refuses to take the reins of his Chicago-area motorcycle club as it loses its way into organized crime. Inspired by Danny Lyon’s photojournalistic book of the same name, Butler’s real-life character was one of the few who wasn’t interviewed for the book nor...

Wherever I go, when I tell people that I work as an editor for Gold Derby, they never fail to bring up their latest binge-fest and how obsessed they were with it. “Ripley” occupied that space for several weeks, replaced by “Baby Reindeer,” then “Fellow Travelers.” Before that, I ran into a bunch of “Lessons in Chemistry” fans, and friends who were absolutely obsessed with “Feud: Capote vs. the Swans.” “Fargo: Season 5” and “True Detective: Night Country” also had, and continue to have, legions of followers. And of course, “Shogun” consumed people for a good long while.
The point is that Best Limited Series has grown the past few years into the hottest and most prestigious Emmy category, and that’s especially true in 2024 with the depletion of the Best Drama Series and Best Comedy Series due to the 2023 strikes and the departure of shows like “Succession” and “Ted Lasso.

Tom Hanks is the ultimate ‘good guy’ of Hollywood. The two-time Oscar winner has made a career out of playing morally decent leading men who do the right thing during a stressful situation. He has worked with acclaimed filmmakers such as Steven Spielberg, Clint Eastwood, Robert Zemeckis, and Baz Luhrmann.
Hanks received one of his numerous Oscar nominations for the role of Captain John Miller in Spielberg’s WWII drama Saving Private Ryan. The film followed a group of US soldiers tasked with retrieving a private whose brothers have been killed in action. When Hanks was offered the role, the actor was reportedly surprised by the filmmaker’s choice.

While in development for the Amazon Prime drama “Expats,” creator, writer and director Lulu Wang knew she had to pay tribute to the lives lost during the 1989 Tiananmen Square massacre. Having been in China at that time as a child, she remembers how scared she was when her father nearly left to join the protest which ultimately led to the death of hundreds.
“My father was supposed to go to this protest and my mother said to him a speech, which is in the show. She said, ‘Out there, you are an ant. You can give your life and it will not make that big of a difference. They’ll forget about you. But you’re my whole world, and you’re Lulu’s whole world,'” Wang said during Variety‘s Night in the Writers Room on June 13. “I said to the studio and I said to [Nicole Kidman], ‘If I do this series,...

After weeks of FYC events and relentless campaigning from studios, voting for the 2024 Primetime Emmy Awards nominations has officially begun, with Television Academy members holding ballots in hand.
Nearly 24,000 industry professionals, divided among 31 professional peer groups, sit among the organization’s ranks, each member voting on specific categories. However, every eligible voter can cast a ballot in the top 15 series races: comedy, drama, limited or anthology, television movie, talk, variety special (live), variety special (pre-recorded), short form (comedy/drama/variety), short form (nonfiction/reality), hosted nonfiction, structured reality, unstructured reality, reality competition, scripted variety and game show.
According to TV Academy rules, the number of nominees is determined by the number of submissions. However, drama and comedy series are designated for eight shows each to make the final cut. There were 229 total series submitted in the drama, comedy, and limited or anthology series categories, compared to 309 last year, marking a 33% decrease.

IFC Films has acquired the North American rights to “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point,” a holiday season dramedy that had its world premiere at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The film was directed by Tyler Taormina (“Ham on Rye”) and stars newcomer Matilda Fleming, as well as Michael Cera (“Barbie”), Francesca Scorsese (“We Are Who We Are”), Gregg Turkington (“Ant-Man”), Elsie Fisher (“Eighth Grade”), Sawyer Spielberg (“Masters of the Air’) and Maria Dizzia (“Martha Marcy May Marlene”). IFC will release “Christmas Eve in Miller’s Point” later this year on Nov. 15.
The film kicks off as a rambunctious extended family arrives at their Long Island hometown for the holidays. But before the night is over, two teenage cousins use the chaos sparked by the yuletide reunion to sneak out into the wintry night and make the holiday their own.

Oscar-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood had to make between 200 and 300 leather bomber jackets for AppleTV+’s World War II series “Masters of the Air.”
Despite having more than 80 credits to her name, Atwood had never done a WWII drama and was delighted to finally be tackling the era. She dove deep into researching the period, collecting photos of the young men on the military bases so she could create individual styles for the actors and their characters. She even got samples of the original uniforms.
Her biggest challenge, however, was recreating aviator jackets of the era. It took her six months to complete the task, which ended up becoming a global undertaking.
Leather specialist Gary Eastman provided Atwood with the material, but she needed period-specific zippers, which she had shipped in from Japan. The sheepskin for the shearling linings came from
Scotland and England.

“Masters of the Air” doesn’t fly as high as it does without Anthony Boyle and Nate Mann. No military unit rests on the shoulders of two people, and the Eighth Air Force’s 100th Bomb Group was no different in World War II. Historically known as the Bloody 100th for the tremendous losses it endured, the fearless flyers saw some of the worst action of the war and it did so thousands of feet above the front lines.
But as a piece of cinematic storytelling, the Apple TV+ series from “Band of Brothers” trio Steven Spielberg, Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman needs the profound warmth of Boyle’s Lt. Harry Crosby and Mann’s Major Robert “Rosie” Rosenthal to, ironically, ground its darkest days.
At the top of the call sheet are Austin Butler and Callum Turner, as pilots Major Gale “Buck” Cleven and Major John “Bucky” Egan, respectively.

When Georgia Hunter first pitched her 2017 book, “We Were the Lucky Ones,” about her Polish ancestors’ fight for survival during the Holocaust, she was told World War II literature was a “saturated” market. This wasn’t meant to dissuade her from pushing forward with their harrowing story, but rather acknowledge that there is never a shortage of novels, films and series trying to reckon with the everlasting wounds of the war.
It was no different when Hunter and producers Thomas Kail and Erica Lipez adapted the book into Hulu’s eight-part limited series, which premiered in March.
“We knew with this kind of story in particular, you have to go beyond the logline,” Lipez tells Variety. “It was so much about making sure people heard the full story, particularly when we were pitching it. As someone who thought they had a really good Holocaust education, what I knew immediately upon...

Based on a True Story composer Sherri Chung brought a typewriter to the orchestra to perform her score during Deadline’s Sound & Screen live-music event. The typewriter was just one of the unusual instruments she included in the music for the Peacock comedy mystery.

Composer Blake Neely called his score for Apple TV+’s Masters of the Air a tribute to his mentor, the late Michael Kamen. Kamen gave Neely his first job as an orchestrator on Band of Brothers, the first in Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks’ World War II series trilogy.
“It’s a love letter to Michael,” Neely said, choking up at Deadline’s Sound & Screen Television live-music event talking about Kamen, who died in 2003. “I got my start in this business because of Michael Kamen. On Band of Brothers I was one of his orchestrators. Then we lost him.”
The producers of The Pacific asked Neely to work with Hans Zimmer and Geoff Zanelli. Neely did so reluctantly, but stopped producer Gary Goetzman in his tracks when he began asking Neely to collaborate again on Masters.

It may seem that Netflix has taken over the period dramas’ scene with the glowing success of Bridgerton, the series that got all the possible titles. However, Apple TV is now killing it with their period shows too, as you may have seen such gems, as Lessons in Chemistry (2023), Masters of the Air, The New Look, and Manhunt (all 2024).
This year the platform released a must-see miniseries that also takes us back in time, but here we embark on a journey together with one of the Founding Fathers of the United States, Benjamin Franklin. This show can even beat Bridgerton by its quality (and it surely does better when it comes to historical accuracy).
It starts by depicting the events of December 1776 after The Declaration of Independence was adopted. Franklin goes on a mission to France as commissioner for the United States, taking his 16-year-old grandson, William Temple Franklin with him.

Just last month, we learned that Glen Powell (Top Gun: Maverick), Margaret Qualley (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Ed Harris (The Truman Show) had signed on to star in the revenge thriller Huntington for A24 and writer/director John Patton Ford. Now Huntington has gone into production, and Deadline has revealed that the cast also includes Jessica Henwick (Glass Onion), Topher Grace (That 70s Show), Zach Woods (Silicon Valley), and Raff Law (Masters of the Air). Details on the characters they’ll be playing have not been revealed.
Drawing inspiration from the 1949 crime comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, Huntington will see Powell taking on the role of Becket Redfellow, the heir to a multi-billion-dollar fortune who will stop at nothing to get what he deserves… Or what he thinks he deserves. “Masters of the Air” costume designer Colleen Atwood brought along Austin Butler’s jacket to Variety’s TV FYC Fest. “It’s Austin Butler’s jacket that he wore, Maj. Cleven’s jacket and hat, and I thought, ‘Well, I should bring it.’ It’s D-Day. People like seeing real stuff,'” Atwood told the audience.
