Alien: Romulus is very nearly here and a few new stills from Fede Alvarez's long-awaited reboot have been released today. In those, we see more of the human cast...most or all of whom will end up being torn to shreds by the movie's Xenomorphs!
Among them is Madame Web and Superman star Isabela Merced. She plays Kay in the movie and is the youngest member of this group.
"I really do believe that there are specific sequences in this film that will scar some kids that sneak into the movie for life," the actress tells Total Film.
Her co-star, David Jonsson, adds, "You can definitely say goodbye to a [PG-13]. The halfway house with Fede [Álvarez, director] is just not his style. If you’re going to try and scare people, then you scare them."
"He doesn’t know how to not put that spin on it," Cailee Spaeny notes. "That is just his instinct.

Normal People made stars of its two young actors and now one of them has shared that she’d be keen to revisit the role some time in the future.

The series was released in April 2020, on BBC Three initially in the UK, and on Hulu in the US, and became one of the great TV hits of lockdown. Edgar-Jones told the BBC: “It introduced Paul and I to a lot of people and film-makers.”

Alien: Romulus has understandably become one of this summer's most highly anticipated movies. Based on what we've seen thus far, all signs point to it following in the footsteps of Prey (Hulu's 2022 Predator reboot) as a return to form for the franchise.
Tickets went on sale this past Thursday and Total Film (via SFFGazette.com) just unleashed two new covers for its next issue.
The Xenomorph looms large on both and, after years of being portrayed as cannon fodder, it looks like filmmaker Fede Alvarez plans to use them to strike fear into our hearts all over again.
"I think we all have our favorite creatures in these movies," the filmmaker recently said. "Facehuggers have always been the ones that scare me the most. The idea of what would happen if the Facehugger gets you, you'll wish for the Xenomorph. You'll wish for a quick death instead of what...

Romance author Emily Henry now has five of her most recent novels set to be adapted for the big and small screens. Henry went on a rom-com writing spree that began with Beach Read, which came out in the summer of 2020. She has published a book a year since then, with People We Meet on Vacation coming out in 2021, Book Lovers arriving in 2022, Happy Place released in 2023 and Funny Story hitting shelves this year.
Three of Henry’s books received adaptation optioning deals for films, with two of them attaching directors. Starting in 2022, multiple studios made the decision to adapt various Emily Henry books into movies. The Writers’ and Actors’ strikes likely delayed any moves in casting, but a fourth novel has just been optioned by Jennifer Lopez’s production company for a television series adaptation at Netflix.

Paramount has released its first trailer for ‘Gladiator II,’ the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 historical drama that took the world by storm, and it’s shaping up to have an all-star cast worthy of the legendary franchise (the original film is #36 on IMDb’s Top 250 Movies chart). Director Ridley Scott has assembled an impressive ensemble of veteran stars and rising talents to bring the next chapter of this ancient Roman saga to life. Who are the players? IMDb has broken down the trailer to give fans the scoop on the cast and characters.
Paul Mescal as Lucius
Leading the way is Paul Mescal as Lucius, the son of Lucilla, who we saw as a young boy shadowing the legendary gladiator Maximus (played by Russell Crowe) in the original film. Mescal gained popularity starring opposite Daisy Edgar-Jones in the Hulu series “Normal People,” and since then the actor has quickly become one of Hollywood's hottest young stars. More recently, he costarred with Andrew Scott in ‘All of Us Strangers’ and gained an Oscar nomination for his role in ‘Aftersun.’ ‘Gladiator II’ is a huge opportunity for Mescal to cement himself as a leading man on the big screen.
Denzel Washington as Macrinus
Acting royalty Denzel Washington needs no introduction, and the two-time Oscar winner joins the cast as the Roman emperor Macrinus. A powerful ruler of the Roman Empire should be a juicy role for Washington to sink his teeth into, judging by the way he chews up the scenery in the trailer.
Pedro Pascal as Marcus Acacius
Pedro Pascal continues his meteoric rise with a key role as Marcus Acacius, a Roman general. Fresh off the massive success of HBO’s “The Last of Us,” Pascal will lend his leading man charisma and geek cred to this sword-and-sandal epic in a supporting role as the target of Mescal’s revenge.
Joseph Quinn as Emperor Geta
Joseph Quinn is best known for his stint as Eddie Munson, the beloved metalhead from Season 4 of “Stranger Things.” That role earned him the top spot on IMDb’s STARmeter for three weeks straight in 2022. He’s currently the most popular cast member from ‘Gladiator II’ on IMDb, thanks to his current hit, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One,’ in which he costars with Lupita Nyong’o. In ‘Gladiator II,’ he'll play the villainous Emperor Geta in a role that will likely draw comparisons to Joaquin Phoenix’s Commodus from the first ‘Gladiator.’
Connie Nielsen as Lucilla
Connie Nielsen reprises her role as Lucilla from the original ‘Gladiator,’ bringing gravitas and history to the sprawling story. Her regal presence should anchor the film's family dynamics. Fans may also recognize Nielsen from her role as Hippolyta in DC’s ‘Wonder Woman’ and ‘Wonder Woman 1984.’
Fred Hechinger as Emperor Caracalla
Fred Hechinger, the talented young actor who had key roles in Season 1 of “The White Lotus” and in Netflix’s ‘Fear Street’ trilogy and recently starred in the indie comedy ‘Thelma,’ takes a very different turn here as the insane Emperor Caracalla. From his wild performance seen in the trailer, Hechinger will get to demonstrate his range as an antagonist.
With an ensemble blending decorated veterans like Washington and Pascal with hot new stars like Mescal and Quinn, ‘Gladiator II’ has a cast befitting its huge ambitions to revive one of cinema's most acclaimed franchises. Fans can look forward to this impressive line-up of talent facing off in the Colosseum when the film hits theaters in November 2024.

It’s been one month since Love Island USA hit Peacock airwaves, with fans wondering about the finale.
Love Island USA doesn’t play out over the whole summer like, say, Big Brother.
Instead, the reality TV show moves fast and furious with each season, airing multiple episodes a week for a few weeks.
Casa Amor shook things up last week on Love Island USA, which means the end isn’t far.
Honestly, it’s hard to believe we’re almost done, considering the state of the villa right now and the lack of couples to really cheer on.
More on that at a later date, though. For now, let’s take a look at what we know about the end of the Love Island season.
When is the Love Island USA Season 6?
If Peacock follows the same format as Season 4 and Season 5, then we can expect Love Island USA Season 6 to have 37 or 38 episodes.

With the rise of a new generation of talent in cinema, Paul Mescal is already a promising name capable of redefining the standards of excellence in acting, after all, he’s already been nominated for an Oscar. But is it possible for him to win now? A proof of this came with the release of the trailer for Gladiator 2.
Still from Gladiator II (Paramount Pictures)
Besides, it turns out that the sequel is already generating so much excitement and expectation that even those who criticize Ridley Scott’s productions may end up changing their minds about the director. Could it be time for him to grow on people as well?

The first official trailer for Ridley Scott's long-awaited historical action epic Gladiator II has arrived online and it's every bit as epic as you'd expect as Paul Mescal (Normal People; Aftersun; The Lost Daughter) squares off against 3x Primetime Emmy-nominee Pedro Pascal (The Mandalorian; Game of Thrones; Narcos) and Academy Award-winner Denzel Washington (Training Day; Fences; Malcolm X).
As per the official synopsis, "Gladiator II continues the epic saga of power, intrigue, and vengeance set in Ancient Rome. Years after witnessing the death of the revered hero Maximus at the hands of his uncle, Lucius (Paul Mescal) is forced to enter the Colosseum after his home is conquered by the tyrannical Emperors who now lead Rome with an iron fist. With rage in his heart and the future of the Empire at stake, Lucius must look to his past to find strength and honor to return the glory of Rome to its people.

Are you not entertained? Watch the new trailer for Gladiator II, and we promise that you most certainly will be. Over two decades after Russell Crowe’s Maximus stepped into the arena in Ridley Scott’s award-winning, instant classic historical drama, the director is returning to Rome. The new movie will focus on Lucius, son of Connie Nielsen’s Lucilla from the first film, played now by Aftersun and All Of Us Strangers’ star Paul Mescal. Take a deep breath, and watch the trailer now:
Phew. Still with us? That is three minutes of pure gladiatorial adrenaline, indicating that even at age 86, Scott can still deliver a film of truly epic proportions. It begins with a flashback to the first movie, a voiceover from Mescal’s Lucius setting the scene. “I remember that day,” he says. “I never forgot it – that a slave could take revenge against an Emperor.” Far from home,...

Paul Mescal and Denzel Washington raise their swords for an epic arena battle in the first trailer for Ridley Scott’s sequel movie Gladiator II.
Paramount Pictures releases the historical drama feature in theaters Nov. 22. Starring Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen, the film is director Scott’s follow-up to his 2000 epic Gladiator that starred Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix and collected five Oscars, including best picture.
Set several decades after the events of the first movie in ancient Rome, Gladiator II centers on Lucius (Mescal) — the grandson of former Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius and now the grown-up son of Emperor Commodus — who resides with his family in Numidia. After ending up in slavery following an invasion led by Roman general Marcus Acacius, Lucius follows the inspiration of Maximus (played by Crowe in the original Gladiator) and competes as a gladiator.

France’s Deauville American Film Festival has announced a retrospective gathering 50 U.S. features that have challenged perceptions of the world to mark its 50th anniversary.
The selection ranges from D. W. Griffith’s 1916 silent epic Intolerance to Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon A Time In Hollywood, and also includes Ida Lupino’s groundbreaking 1950 rape drama Outrage as well as Spike Lee’s Do The Right Thing. (see full list below)
“Cinema has always made us dream, travel, desire, fantasize, laugh, cry. But how many films have been able to shake up our certainties, question our beliefs, question our prejudices and put our own views into perspective?,” said the festival.
“The Deauville American Film Festival wanted to highlight a selection of 50 films that have changed the way we look at the world,” it continued.

Editor’s note: this list was originally published in July 2023. It has since been updated with new entries.
To quote Alice Cooper (and poorly paraphrase “High School Musical 2”), school’s out for summer. With Boppenheimer hitting air-conditioned theaters midway through July — just as countless actors and screenwriters head into the heat to join picket-lines in New York and Los Angeles — summer 2023 will no doubt prove a memorable one for Hollywood. What better time then to consider how the movies themselves represent the reason for the season?
The best summer vacation movies range in subject matter and can appeal to all sorts of different audiences. Kid-centric flicks, like “The Parent Trap,” and adult slashers, like the “Friday the 13th” films, explore the traditions and perils of sleep-away camp from spectacularly different view points. Meanwhile, road trip flicks, like the Audrey Hepburn-starring “Two for the Road” and Hindi film “Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara,...

The upcoming “Gladiator 2” has been making waves in Hollywood, not least due to the physical transformation of its star, Paul Mescal. The 28-year-old actor, known for his roles in “Normal People” and “Aftersun,” has undergone a significant change in preparation for his role as Lucius Verus in Ridley Scott’s long-awaited sequel to the 2000 Oscar-winning epic.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Mescal shed light on his approach to bulking up for the role. “I just wanted to be big and strong and look like somebody who can cause a bit of damage when shit hits the fan,” he explained.
The actor emphasized that his goal was not to achieve a perfect aesthetic, but rather to embody the strength and presence of a warrior. “I think also, sometimes, one could, in striving for that perfect look, end up looking more like an underwear model than a warrior,” Mescal added.

Actor Paul Mescal was the last person who fans would have dreamed of leading Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II but it has become a reality. The actor, known for his role in Aftersun and Normal People, was selected after only a 20-30-minute Zoom call with Scott, according to Mescal.
The new promotional images from the film indicate a body transformation for the actor as he looks bulky and warrior-like. The film is set during the Roman Empire and Mescal reportedly wanted to make sure he avoided being considered a s*x symbol in the film, the way Brad Pitt was after Fight Club.

Pedro Pascal and Paul Mescal star in Gladiator II and are teasing the Ridley Scott sequel.
In a new feature for the film, Pascal weighed in on Mescal’s physical transformation for the role, why he would not want to fight him, and the nickname he gave him.

He continued, “Outside of Ridley being a total genius, Paul is a big reason as to why I would put my poor body through that experience.”

Although Kieran Burton is a relatively new actor in the scene, he's been making a name for himself since 2022.
According to his London-based talent agency, Burton is cut his teeth at the Nottingham Television Workshop and is best known for playing Alex in the 2022 Oscar-nominated film Aftersun, where he starred alongside Normal People's Paul Mescal and breakout star Frankie Corio.

When Sir Ridley Scott returned to the Alien franchise, it was cause for celebration among fans. Unfortunately, his prequels - Prometheus and Alien: Covenant - were light on action and horror and heavy on deep sci-fi themes...which didn't resonate in quite the way the filmmaker hoped.
Disney's acquisition of 20th Century Fox saw them gain the rights to the property and we're now getting a new TV series from Fargo showrunner Noah Hawley and a movie, Alien: Romulus, directed by Evil Dead filmmaker Fede Alvarez.
Thanks to SFFGazette.com, we have a new teaser for Alien: Romulus after the movie was highlighted on an upcoming magazine cover.
The Xenomorphs are finally back and now more terrifying than they have been in a very long time; for those of you wondering, that's Cailee Spaeny's character Rain staring the monster down.
"She’s an amazing talent," Alvarez recently said of the actress.

Aftersun's ending settles on a devastating conclusion for Calum and Sophie, with a deeper meaning behind their bittersweet vacation to Turkey.
The critically acclaimed coming-of-age drama from director Charlotte Wells chronicles Paul Mescal as Calum and Frankie Corio as Sophie on a family holiday, exploring themes of mental and reflection on what could have been.
While initially presented as a fun trip between father and daughter, the movie hits viewers with an emotional gut punch as it unravels what is going on with Calum.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Aftersun (Charlotte Wells)
One of the 2022’s most resonant films, Aftersun looks at the scratchy dynamics between a father and daughter while on vacation. It’s about memory, the finite nature of the relationships in our lives, and the difficulties of a parent’s diminishing mental health. Charlotte Wells knows where to put the camera in her debut—undeterred from taking risks, from placing her characters outside of the frame, from looking at shadows instead of the people themselves. Aftersun is a rare, tremendous first film, full of heart and focused melancholy; it breaks you down and fills you up simultaneously. The consistent inclusion of camcorder footage, and the fact that it enhances the story rather than becoming a distraction, further proclaims...

Back in 2020, we saw Paul Mescal’s breakout role in the romantic miniseries Normal People that displayed his obvious drama talent. Being one of the most demanded young actors in the industry now, Mescal has already greatly expanded his filmography.
While we’re waiting for the follow-up to Ridley Scott’s Gladiator, starring the actor, let’s recall his brightest 2021 flick. Luckily, it will be added to Netflix’s catalog next week, so be ready to cry your eyes out while watching this emotional roller coaster of a movie.
The film’s plot revolves around Sophie, an 11-year-old girl who gets a chance to spend her holidays with her father Calum (Mescal) at a resort. The point is that Sophie’s parents have lost any connection after the divorce, and that’s why she treasures that rare time.
Even though Calum is certainly a loving father, he struggles to make...

A little over one decade after delivering their bold and blood-soaked entry of the Evil Dead franchise, director/co-writer Fede Alvarez and co-writer Rodo Sayagues are bringing their scary good talents to a place where no one can hear you scream in 20th Century Studios' new film Alien: Romulus, and the offical trailer and poster have now been unveiled ahead of the movie's anticipated August 16th theatrical release, offering a chilling look at plenty of Facehugger frights and Xenomorph mayhem:

As promised. 20th Century Studios has released the first full-length trailer for Alien: Romulus. If Prometheus and Alien: Covenant's heavy sci-fi themes weren't your thing, get ready for a gore-filled horror fest with Evil Dead helmer Fede Álvarez clearly holding nothing back here.
While it's clear the filmmaker wasn't kidding when he talked about pulling inspiration from both Alien and Aliens, this feels more like a terrifying horror movie than an action-packed adventure.
Along the way, we see Facehuggers, chestbursters, and the iconic acid-spewing Xenomorph as this latest crew of soon-to-be-dead meat attempts to fend off an invasion from within. Needless to say, the sneak peek is red-band and isn't for the faint of heart.
"My first instinct, just to try something different that hasn’t been seen before, was to approach it from the angle of characters who are not professionals or scientists; they’re not even adults,...

As we've previously discussed, this summer movie season is surprisingly light on franchise fare.
That's partially due to the strikes that shut down Hollywood for much of the year, and partially due to the fact that superhero flicks just aren't packing 'em in like they used to.
But if you're a fan of sequels and nostalgia, fear not! Ridley Scott's Alien saga will be returning to theaters in August!
Yes, Alien: Romulus is set for release on August 16.
Scott is still on board as executive producer, but there's a new writer-director at the helm in the form of Evil Dead and Don't Breathe horror-meister Fede Alvarez.
Earlier today, 20th Century Studios dropped a press release, along with a trailer that's giving us some serious heebie-jeebies.

The first full-length trailer for for Alien: Romulus will be released tomorrow and to build excitement for that, we have a nightmare-inducting poster putting a Facehugger (and its victim) front and centre.

Fans have been waiting to see some more footage from Fede Alvarez's Alien: Romulus since the release of the chilling first teaser, and we now have an update on the full trailer for the iconic sci-fi horror franchise's return to the big screen.
There was some talk of the new trailer landing today, but according to insider Daniel Richtman, it will be with us tomorrow, Tuesday the 4th.
In addition, Empire has shared a new official still featuring Cailee Spaeny as Rain Carradine and David Jonsson as her android foster brother, Andy.
Synthetics (or artificial persons if you'd rather not offend Bishop) have been a staple of the Alien franchise since the beginning, but it sounds like Romulus will introduce a human/android dynamic we haven't seen before.
