Lady Gaga’s Artpop is, in a word, over-the-top. Its music is a lot more experimental and bizarre than the “Poker Face” singer‘s other work, much less the average pop album. One of the producers of Artpop said that crafting the record drained him, partly because he had to spend so much time in the studio to finish it. The producer said that he had no desire to make other records after working on Artpop.

In the multitude of A Star Is Born movies and their progeny, an aspiring artist’s struggles are prelude to a melodrama of triumph and conflict, played out in the unforgiving glare of the fame machine’s klieg lights. Nicole Riegel’s Dandelion turns that template inside out: In its fringe milieu of shadows, the yearning and bursts of inspiration, the discouragement and relentless hard work are not prelude but the main action.

Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn performance was “really surprising” to Joker: Folie à Deux’s casting director Francine Maisler, who said casting Gaga to star opposite Joaquin Phoenix was not her idea.
“She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind,” Maisler said during a recent conversation at Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (via Variety). “I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was [director] Todd Phillips, before me. But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good.

“Joker: Folie á Deux” casting director Francine Maisler revealed during a recent chat at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival (via IndieWire) that casting Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn opposite Joaquin Phoenix was not originally her idea. It was director Todd Phillips who apparently picked the pop star and “A Star Is Born” Oscar winner for the part. However, Gaga ended up surprising Maisler.
“She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind,” Maisler said. “I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me. But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised. I mean, we all knew what she could do in ‘A Star Is Born,’ but I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real.

Initially intended as a standalone film, ‘Joker’ (2019) was originally not envisioned to have sequels. However, Warner Bros. aimed to use it to launch DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films distinct from the DC Extended Universe. Despite this, director Todd Phillips expressed interest in continuing the story with a sequel.
By November 2019, the sequel was officially confirmed to be in development. Following the announcement, it was disclosed that Lady Gaga would join Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker as Harley Quinn. Phillips justified casting Gaga by citing his familiarity with her exceptional performance in ‘A Star is Born,’ which he had produced, describing it as nothing short of magical.
Lady Gaga recently remarked that she intends to bring a unique and authentic interpretation to the role of Harley Quinn, sparking varied reactions among fans. Some eagerly anticipate her performance, while others argue that her casting might overshadow Joaquin Phoenix’s portrayal of Joker.

Considering Todd Phillips’ DC sequel “Joker: Folie á Deux” is known to be jukebox musical that may or may not feature original songs as well, the casting of renowned pop singer and actress Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn should make a lot of sense, but in fact, didn’t at first to the person in charge.

After a disastrous 2023 for the DC brand, Warner Bros. hopes to deliver at least one hit comic book movie this year with Joker: Folie à Deux before relaunching the franchise under DC Studios' watch with 2025's Superman.
2019's Joker grossed over $1 billion on a modest $55 million budget. However, with reports swirling that the sequel cost upwards of $200 million, the studio will surely be hoping it hasn't allowed filmmaker Todd Phillips to indulge too much with this follow-up. After all, musicals are a tough sell at the best of times and comic book adaptations have struggled greatly post-covid.
While time will tell whether Joker: Folie à Deux can live up to its predecessor, a new look at the Clown Prince of Crime and Harley Quinn has been revealed courtesy of a t-shirt which has found its way into stores sooner than expected.
They both look very comic-accurate here and we're hopeful...

Could Lady Gaga be heading towards her second Oscar nomination for acting? It’s definitely on the table as the hype for this year’s Joker: Folie à Deux continues to build ahead of its October release. Considering her previously proven acting chops – earning a Best Actress nomination for A Star Is Born – and also being paired with Joaquin Phoenix – reprising a Best Actor-winning role – Lady Gaga has landed on a number of pundits’ prediction lists. She, too, is earning serious praise from those behind the scenes, with the movie’s casting director saying she will “blow your mind” in Joker 2.
Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic (via Deadline), casting director Francine Maisler went all in on going gaga for Lady Gaga. “She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind.” But Maisler isn’t patting her own back here,...

Lady Gaga’s portrayal of Harley Quinn in the upcoming “Joker: Folie À Deux” is already generating significant buzz, with the film’s casting director, Francine Maisler, praising the pop icon’s performance as “surprising” and “mind-blowing.”
Speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, Maisler shared her enthusiasm for Gaga’s work in the highly anticipated sequel. “She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind,” Maisler stated, adding that Gaga more than holds her own against Joaquin Phoenix’s Oscar-winning portrayal of the Joker.
The casting decision, credited to director Todd Phillips, appears to be paying off. Maisler noted, “I thought, ‘Oh, well, that’s kind of in her wheelhouse.’ Something she could do and just be real. But this… Man, she’s good.”

While Joker was a record-breaking $1 billion hit in 2019, few DC fans expected it to get a sequel. For starters, it appeared to be designed as a standalone origin story for the Clown Prince of Crime, free from connections to the wider DC Universe and, most strikingly, Batman.
There's a chance the young Bruce Wayne will suit up for a confrontation with Arthur Fleck somewhere down the line, of course, but in Joker: Folie à Deux, the spotlight will be on Harley Quinn (who is expected to have a new name in this sequel).
Deadline recently spoke with casting director Francine Maisler and she made it clear Lady Gaga's take on The Joker's partner in crime has exceeded all expectations.

As the Academy prepares to debut an award for casting directors at the 2026 Oscars, the timing was right for Francine Maisler to travel this week to the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic for a tribute organized by its Industry Days office. Taking the stage for a Kviff Talk with her associate Molly Rose, the renowned casting director admitted she had initially been reluctant to enter the limelight. “Coming here is special for me, because I tend to avoid these things. I’m hired to be behind the camera, not in front.”
Despite such modesty, Maisler had no trouble holding the room for nearly 90 minutes, reflecting not only on her own illustrious career path but praising the legions of actors she has worked with for the last 30-odd years. Green Book, which was helmed by Peter Farrelly, reached a stunning crescendo of praise and won the coveted Best Picture title at the 91st Academy Awards, capping an almost perfect season of wins. The film’s three Oscar wins alone included Best Supporting Actor for the incomparable Mahershala Ali and a laurel for Best Original Screenplay. The film did garner critical acclaim in addition to making a respectable sum of money.

June has thankfully bounced back from a weaker start to the summer movie season, but July has two or three offerings that could end up being the biggest films of the year, going by their predecessors. Read on for Gold Derby’s July 2024 box office preview.
“Deadpool & Wolverine” (Disney/Marvel – July 26)
The fact that we’ve gotten this far into 2024 without a superhero movie is pretty astounding, and that’s going to greatly benefit the introduction of Ryan Reynolds‘ Wade Wilson to the MCU, since he’s bringing along his “frie-mesis,” Hugh Jackman‘s Wolverine. Both the original “Deadpool” in 2016, and its sequel, “Deadpool 2” in 2018, grossed over $300 million domestically and $780 million worldwide, and the addition of Jackman’s Wolverine, whose own “Logan” movie grossed $614 million worldwide, should help make this one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, likely to challenge “Inside Out 2” as the biggest opening weekend for the year,...

Halsey may be best known for her chart-topping success in the music industry but the Grammy nominated singer-songwriter has been dipping her toes into Hollywood for some time. She had a cameo in Bradley Cooper’s A Star Is Born, appeared in Cameron Crowe’s rocker series Roadies, voiced a lead role as Porsha Crystal in the animated Sing 2 and starred opposite Sydney Sweeney in Tony Tost’s yet-to-be-released crime-western Americana.
But with MaXXXine — the third and final entry in filmmaker Ti West’s horror trilogy from A24 after X and Pearl — Halsey fully takes the plunge into Tinseltown playing Tabby Martin opposite leading lady Mia Goth’s Maxine Minx. The film centers on Maxine who, as the lone survivor of the bloody massacre on a remote Texas property that played out in the original entry X, sets off for Los Angeles in the mid-1980s to pursue her dreams of big-screen stardom.

10. The Thing (1982)
You can’t imagine a list of the best horror movies in history without The Thing. Directed by John Carpenter, this brilliant film was a remake of 1951’s The Thing from Another World, but few people know about it. First, because Carpenter really made the concept his own, and second, because the original film was never exactly popular.
You can watch The Thing (1982) on Netflix and Prime Video.
9. Scarface (1983)
The original 1932’s Scarface was the pinnacle of a classic noir movie, following the same character on his way to build the most impressive criminal empire. But after Brian De Palma’s remake half a century later, barely anyone remembers the original: Al Pacino absolutely owned this movie. It’s his now, and who’s going to take it away?
You can watch Scarface (1983) on Hulu and Prime Video.

Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are on the verge of Egot status… that is, if Emmy voters nominate their song from “Only Murders in the Building” and it winds up winning three months from now.
Pasek and Paul — already Oscar winners for “La La Land” and Tony and Grammy winners for “Dear Evan Hansen” — could finally manage that feat with the witty comic patter song “Which of the Pickwick Triplets Did It?,” sung by Steve Martin and co-written with fellow Tony and Grammy winners Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman for the third season of the Hulu comedy-drama.
They are among the many prominent songwriters who have entered songs in this year’s Emmy competition. Voting began Thursday, with approximately 550 members of the Television Academy music peer group eligible to vote in seven music categories. Voting ends June 24 and the nominations will be announced July 17.

The legendary Judy Garland, one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century, would have turned 100 on June 10, 2022. To celebrate her career, tour our photo gallery looking back at her greatest film performances.
Known as the little girl (she was only 4’11) with the big voice, Garland was a rare true triple threat, holding her own with such great dancers as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire, twice receiving Oscar nominations in acting categories, as well as leaving behind a legacy of record-breaking concerts, a Grammy-winning gold album and recordings of iconic songs that no one else has ever been able to capture in quite the same way.
Born Frances Ethel Gumm on June 10, 1922, in Grand Rapids Minnesota, Garland was the youngest of three girls. They would eventually form the vaudeville act “The Gumm Sisters” when baby Frances was only two years old. After almost a decade of touring with her sisters,...

Bradley Cooper is one of the most accomplished actors working in Hollywood right now. While he gained fame for his comedies such as The Hangover series, he graduated to dramatic roles with films like American Sniper and Silver Linings Playbook. He even turned director with the musical romance A Star Is Born and last year’s Maestro.
Cooper opened up about his struggles as an up-and-coming actor in the business. He mentioned that he had once auditioned for Michael Mann’s Public Enemies. The actor emotionally recounted how despite not getting the role, he cherished the letter that Mann sent him after his rejection which he has preserved to this day.

Francis Ford Coppola has addressed the allegations that he made advances with actresses on the set of “Megalopolis.”
In a report last month by The Guardian, multiple anonymous crew members said Coppola behaved inappropriately amid production. Now, during an hour-long interview Coppola gave to Manohla Dargis of the The New York Times during the Cannes Film Festival, the filmmaker denied the allegations in a roundabout way. In part, Coppola pointed to how he was raised and the morals he learned from his mother, Italia Coppola.
“My mother told me that if you make an advance toward a woman, it means you disrespect her, and the girls I had crushes on, I certainly didn’t disrespect them,” Coppola said.
As the New York Times wrote, “Pressed further, he added that there was a photo of one of the ‘girls’ he kissed on the cheek that had been taken by her father.

Taylor Swift is coming to the defense of Lady Gaga after false rumors began spreading over the weekend that she was pregnant.
Gaga was photographed by paparazzi at her sister’s wedding in a small town in Maine, where people began speculating she was expecting.
On Monday, the “Bad Romance” singer took to TikTok to shut down the rumors. She posted a 10-second video with the “I am the aesthetic” audio, which says, “I don’t have to find an aesthetic; I am the aesthetic. I mean, I’m sure there’s somebody out here right now who is going into Pinterest trying to type up all these adjectives to describe me.”
Over the clip, Gaga wrote, “not pregnant – just down bad cryin at the gym,” referencing Swift’s song “Down Bad” from The Tortured Poets Department.

Most of Wild Wild West plays exactly in the way you would expect, as a uglier, less charismatic version of Men in Black. Sure, Will Smith still has his ineffable cool and Kevin Kline’s always lovable, even when playing a motor-mouthed and egotistical inventor. But the two just don’t click like Smith did with Tommy Lee Jones, and Barry Sonnenfeld’s direction feels forced and mechanical instead of electric. So when Smith’s secret agent Jim West and Kline’s U.S. Marshal Artemus Gordon find the secret lab of mad scientist Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh), the audience feels just as unimpressed as the characters. As the exhausted duo mocks Loveless’s offerings, they ask “What has he got?” listing off his failures. The same question could be posed to Wild Wild West, with its garish set-pieces and flat humor.

Stephen J. Rivele, who shared an Oscar nomination for the screenplay for Oliver Stone’s Nixon and worked on such other biopics as Michael Mann’s Ali, Agnieszka Holland’s Copying Beethoven and Don Cheadle’s Miles Ahead, has died. He was 75.
Rivele had heart issues and died May 17 at his home in Pasadena, California, his son Eli Bocek-Rivele told The Hollywood Reporter.
Rivele wrote on Bradley Cooper’s remake of A Star Is Born and did an early draft for another 2018 release, Bohemian Rhapsody, starring Rami Malek as Queen frontman Freddie Mercury.
He also handled uncredited rewrites on the baseball movie Moneyball (2011) and All Eyez on Me (2017), about Tupac Shakur.

2024’s Venice Film Festival isn’t far away. Last year’s event was one that was slightly cut down due to the ongoing strikes that had befallen Hollywood and prevented a number of actors from attending for the promotion of their films. The films that screened last year included David Fincher’s The Killer, Yorgos Lanthimos’ Poor Things, Ava DuVernay’s Origin, Michael Mann’s Ferrari and Bradley Cooper’s Maestro. The line-up for films out of competition featured such big names as Woody Allen, Wes Anderson, William Friedkin, Richard Linklater and Roman Polanski.
The 81st Annual Venice Film Festival is set for August 28 to September 7. Variety is reporting that among the films that are being rumored for screenings is the Todd Phillips follow-up to the Joaquin Phoenix reimagining of DC’s Clown Prince of Crime. Pearl Jam was in a state of love and trust at a recent show, inviting Bradley Cooper on stage to sing a song from A Star Is Born with the band’s lead singer, Eddie Vedder.
Pearl Jam has kept a consistent format on the Dark Matter Tour, with the majority of their first encores kicking off with covers: Tom Petty’s “I Won’t Back Down”, Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me In Your Heart”, Tom Waits’ “Picture In a Frame”…But with their recent gig at BottleRock Napa Valley, the band built off of “Last Kiss” with yet another cover: “Maybe It’s Time” from 2018s A Star Is Born, bringing out Bradley Cooper to help nail the soundtrack song.

The actor joined Vedder at the BottleRock musical festival in Napa Valley for the song Maybe It’s Time from A Star Is Born with Pearl Jam’s Vedder.
The two have been longtime friends, with Vedder serving as the sounding board as Cooper developed his Star character.
Cooper returned to the stage at the end of Pearl Jam’s set to join in on a rendition of Neil Young’s Rockin’ in the Free World.

10. Patrick Swayze & Jennifer Grey in Dirty Dancing (1987)
Dirty Dancing is one of those movies that actually move people to write “most iconic movie couples” lists; not that we’re speaking from experience, of course. The sheer tension and dynamic between Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey gave an entire generation their idea of the perfect couple energy, and they looked stunning together.
9. Meg Ryan & Tom Hanks in Sleepless in Seattle (1993)
The touching and infinitely warm story told by Sleepless in Seattle captivated viewers around the world, but it was the chemistry between Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan that really made it so great. The two stars famously have an amazing relationship and worked together on many movies, fueling fans’ hopes; albeit, they were just friends.

Bradley Cooper famously channeled Eddie Vedder for his performance as Jackson Maine in the 2018 film, A Star Is Born. In something of a full circle moment, Vedder’s Pearl Jam welcomed Cooper to the stage during the band’s headlining performance at BottleRock Napa Valley on Saturday.
In introducing Cooper, Vedder told the crowd: “There was an absolutely beautiful film a few years ago about a singer/songwriter named Jackson Maine. In the end of the film, he passes away, and it’s brutal and very powerful and very moving. But tonight is a very special occasion, because he is coming back to life. Please, would you join me in welcoming to the stage, my great, great pal Bradley Cooper.”

Pearl Jam brought out an unlikely guest during the band’s Saturday headlining gig at Napa Valley’s BottleRock as Bradley Cooper — Jackson Maine himself — came onstage to perform “Maybe It’s Time” from his A Star Is Born.
With Eddie Vedder on acoustic guitar, Cooper dusted off his Maine persona to deliver a tender rendition of the Jason Isbell-penned track, which Vedder himself had previously covered solo at a Tempe, Arizona music festival in 2019.

The “Gaga Chromatica Ball” setlist has it all.
More than a decade after “Lady Gaga Presents the Monster Ball Tour,” Gaga is finally back with another professionally recorded concert: “Gaga Chromatica Ball.” The pop icon recorded a 2022 performance in front of a sold-out crowd at Los Angeles’ Dodgert Stadium during her “Chromatica Ball” tour, and now, it’s finally streaming on Max for all to see.
The setlist ranges from her catchiest club anthems like “Bad Romance” and “Poker Face” to acoustic piano renderings of “A Star Is Born” hits “Shallow” and “Always Remember Us This Way” and her most heartfelt songs, a la “Angel Down.” Of course, it’s all done with Gaga’s signature avant-garde glam and theatricality.

“Joker” (2019) was originally intended to be a standalone film without sequels. However, Warner Bros. envisioned it as the beginning of DC Black, a series of darker, more experimental films separate from the DC Extended Universe. Despite the original plan, director Todd Phillips expressed interest in a sequel.
By November 2019, development on the sequel was confirmed, and in 2023, James Gunn stated that “Joker: Folie à Deux” would not be part of the mainline Dcu. Instead, it will be released under the “Elseworlds” label, in line with Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” franchise.
Shortly after the sequel was announced, it was revealed that Lady Gaga would portray Harley Quinn alongside Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker. Todd Phillips explained that he cast Lady Gaga because he had witnessed her mesmerizing performance in “A Star is Born,” where he served as a producer.

Premiering out of Critics’ Week in Cannes, Alexis Langlois’ debut feature “Queens of Drama” is a musical blast of queer culture euphoria, telling a decades-spanning, impossible love story between a pair of pop idols who begin as fans and then become lovers, who climb the charts and permeate the culture as enemies, and who end up forgotten, as time moves forward and a new generation of teenage fans claim new idols for themselves.
The film’s familiar rise-and-fall rhythms struck a chord with filmmaker Alexis Langlois, who cites Vincente Minnelli and George Cukor as inspiration. “I wanted to offer a great, romantic story,” says Langlois. “Really, to give all these queer characters – and the queer actors who play them — a sense of grand romance by mixing the codes and memories of classic cinema with something much more modern.”
“And I like idea of the wheel of fortune,” they continue. “As...

Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis” just may have broken the internet — and the brains of more than a few critics at Cannes.
Upon the film’s world premiere, fans and critics alike took to social media to capture the “insanity” of Coppola’s latest feature, which has been described by the auteur as a “Roman epic.” Count IndieWire’s David Ehrlich as a fan: In his review, he said that “Coppola’s wild and delirious fever dream inspires new hope for the future of movies.” The film debuted in competition at the Cannes Film Festival and is still looking for distribution, but will definitely get an IMAX release regardless.
Adam Driver leads the feature as a pseudo alter ego of writer/director Coppola, with the Oscar-nominated actor playing an architect who envisions saving his corrupt city and transforming the metropolis into a utopia. Cannes parallel section Critics’ Week opens Wednesday with French director Jonathan Millet’s psychological manhunt thriller Ghost Trail (Les Fantômes), starring Adam Bessa as man in in pursuit of a faceless, former torturer.
Running from May 15 to 23, the compact line-up will showcase 11 first and second works features by emerging directors, seven in competition, as well as 13 short films.
Deadline caught up with Artistic Director Ava Cahen on the eve of the 63rd edition.
Deadline: You’re on your third selection as Critics’ Week artistic director. How was it this year?
Ava Cahen: We always put the counters back to zero. So everything felt new, even if it’s my third year. We received a few more films than normal and screened 1,050 features. It’s hard when you’ve only got 11 slots. Obviously there were a lot more than 11 films that we would have liked to have welcomed. There was a lot of discussion.

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. We have also had numerous adaptations of the work, including the animated film from 2007, but all of them focused on the heroic tale of Beowulf, the hero of the story. But, the story also has another important character – Grendel – the monster and Beowulf’s rival in the story.
Grendel is finally going to get the chance to tell you his side of the story, as the movie Grendel will be released soon, with Palisades Park Pictures is launching international sales ahead of Cannes.

When Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters were interested in remaking A Star is Born in 1974, their first choice for John Howard Norman was Elvis Presley. Reportedly, the King of Rock and Roll was very interested in the role, but someone else held the key to Presley’s participation in the project. Who’s to blame for?
Elvis Presley was ‘hooked’ on the idea of remaking ‘A Star Is Born’
Barbra Streisand and Jon Peters met with Elvis Presley to discuss the project in early 1974. At the time, Presley was performing at Las Vegas’ Caesars Palace.
Presley hadn’t made a film since 1969’s Change of Habit. However, he was reportedly looking to return to the movie industry and wanted to be taken seriously as an actor. Therefore, the meaty role of a fading rock star greatly appealed to him.

I recently wrote about the surprise Best Supporting Actress Oscar win by Anna Paquin for 1993’s “The Piano.” At 11 years of age, she became the second youngest competitive Academy Award recipient in history. She remains the last child Oscar champ, though several have since been nominated.
The record for the youngest competitive Oscar victory by a child (someone age 17 or younger) was actually set two decades before the practically hyperventilating Paquin accepted her statuette. And it was in the same category — Best Supporting Actress. Ten-year-old Tatum O’Neal, daughter of the late Ryan O’Neal (a Best Actor nominee for 1970’s “Love Story”), delivered a performance in “Paper Moon” that was loved enough by the academy to bring her the coveted award. The younger O’Neal played Addie Loggins, a child turned con artist who teams up with a man posing as her father during The Great Depression. She was nominated alongside...

Exclusive: Travis Kelce’s foray into Hollywood continues with his first major acting job: a role in Ryan Murphy’s high-profile new FX horror series Grotesquerie. According to sources, the NFL star — and global celebrity due to his relationship with Taylor Swift — has been cast opposite Niecy Nash-Betts, Courtney B. Vance and Lesley Manville in the upcoming series, which has just started production. Reps for FX, Murphy and producing studio 20th Television declined comment.
As is the case with all Murphy projects, details about Grotesquerie are scarce, with no cast members beyond Nash-Betts, Vance and Manville confirmed for the drama, slated for a fall premiere.
The series debut is expected to coincide with the next football season, which will see Kelce return to the Kansas City Chiefs coming off the tight end and team’s third Super Bowl win in five years.
Grotesquerie is a follow-up to Kelce’s acting...
