Almost all of the Best Actor winners at this century’s 23 Academy Awards ceremonies have ticked at least one of these two boxes: they were over 40 or portraying a real-life fellow. The only exceptions: Russell Crowe (“Gladiator”) and Jean Dujardin (“The Artist”) who were 36 and 39 respectively when they won for playing fictional characters.
In 2024, Cillian Murphy, 47, won for his portrayal of scientist J. Robert Oppenheimer in the Best Picture champ “Oppenheimer.” He was the sixth Best Actor winner in a decade to prevail for playing a real person after Will Smith (“King Richard”), Rami Malek (“Bohemian Rhapsody”), Gary Oldman (“The Darkest Hour”), Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), and Eddie Redmayne;. The four to win for fictional parts were Brendan Fraser, Anthony Hopkins (“The Father”), Joaquin Phoenix (“Joker), and Casey Affleck (“Manchester by the Sea”). Karim Ainouz’s first English language film Firebrand plays out like a foggy memory. Though that has little to do with the liberties it takes in warping historical facts as it sees fit. Firebrand essentially reshapes the content of Elizabeth Fremantle’s Queen’s Gambit to give the story of The Queen Who Survived a more contemporary grit and a bold air of defiance. Calling it a biopic would certainly be a bit of a stretch.
Spoiler Alert
What happens in the film?
Fremantle’s book covers a bigger stretch of Queen Katherine Parr’s life than Firebrand explores. So you might feel a little lost, especially if you’re coming into it without any prior knowledge of what life was like for Tudor king Henry VIII’s sixth wife before she married the abusive monarch whose gangrenous legs were inching to death. Katherine was married and widowed twice before...

Jude Law went to some pretty extreme lengths while getting into character as King Henry VIII.
While discussing his new movie Firebrand, the Academy Award nominee revealed that he wore a fragrance on set to make him smell “like he was actually rotting” to play the ailing royal.
“I read that Henry, because of these agonizing ulcers he had on his legs, really smelled like he was actually rotting,” Law told Yahoo Entertainment. “So we came up with this disgusting odor that created a pungency and sickening scent around him.”
He added, “There was this weird duality between people fawning over this man and him being disgusting to be around.”
As director Karim Aïnouz wanted to create a “360-degree set” and “an ambience of truth” for his actors, Law said he made the sensory experience as accurate to the late 1540s time period as possible. Such details included live animals,...

The latest from filmmaker Karim Ainouz tells a familiar story for history buffs. Yet the director’s take on Katherine Parr, sixth wife to Henry VIII, proves a good story never ages. We’ve seen tales of kings and queens on big and small screens. Yet the latest adaptation, Firebrand, takes on a far more grounded look at this time in history. It helps that the cast includes Jude Law as the ailing king and Alicia Vikander as Katherine. And both give sublime performances. The rest of the cast includes Sam Riley, Eddie Marsan, and many more.
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Ainouz, Jude Law, and Alicia Vikander. Karim discussed his take on this story and its grounded nature. Unlike many tales of royalty from the past, the filmmaker’s vision is realism. The discussion with Karim was incredibly engaging, and it was a joy to talk about the project with him.

Alicia Vikander hopes that her performance in 'Firebrand' makes people more aware of Katherine Parr. The 35-year-old actress plays the sixth and final wife of Henry VIII in the historical drama and admitted that she knew little about the Tudor widow before taking the part in Karim Ainouz's film.Alicia told the Just for Variety podcast: "I must confess, I almost felt a bit embarrassed when I was sent the script because I think if I knew anything, it was probably more about the wives that didn't make it."I was, in one way, sad. But then I realised speaking to other people, it seemed like that was the general feel for most, that we have the least knowledge about this woman who actually did survive X amount of years living with this man, and even outlived him."Jude Law portrays Henry VIII in the movie and...

King Henry VIII is most associated with ordering the killings of two of his wives while he had his marriages to another three annulled.
Usually forgotten or rarely mentioned is sixth and final spouse Catherine Parr. But Alicia Vikander is hoping her portrayal of Parr in the new drama “Firebrand” will bring more attention to the royal widow.

Firebrand, a psychological thriller distinctly framed by Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz, premiered at Cannes Film Festival and will hit theaters on June 14. The film plunges us into the tumultuous era of Tudor England, showcasing Jude Law as the notorious Henry VIII and Alicia Vikander as Katherine Parr, the educated woman reluctantly becoming his sixth wife. Co-produced by Roadside Attractions and Vertical, this film depicts Katherine Parr’s precarious navigation through a royal marriage characterized by fear and manipulation. The movie adapts Elizabeth Fremantle’s novel Queen’s Gambit, painting Henry VIII as a tyrant who terrorizes Katherine during their toxic relationship. An...

Jude Law reportedly admitted to intentionally smelling foul while playing the role of England’s King Henry VIII in Firebrand. The famous actor confessed to wearing blood and fecal-matter scented perfume to get into character for the new film, while speaking to People at the Firebrand premiere at the 2024 Tribeca Festival. Karim creates what I call a 360-degree environment to acting, you don’t know where the camera is, it’s all sort of set up shots, it builds a world, Law reportedly said. So the scent was a big part of that, we wanted it to smell and feel real. The...

At last. A weekend to sincerely cheer.
“Inside Out 2” (Disney) would have been terrific at a $100 million opening weekend, but it soared to an estimated $155 million. Meantime, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony), would have been thought successful with a 50 percent drop in its second weekend. Instead, it is off 42 percent with $33 million after an opening weekend of $56.5 million.
In what was set up to be a do-or-die critical two-weekend period, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) exceeded expectations — and more importantly, at the same time. It’s hard to overestimate how much dread there was ahead of these two releases. Had either or both fell short of reasonable expectations, as did to many recent high-end releases before them, the despair would have reached new lows.
Instead, not only did both franchise titles come through, they also exceeded best hopes. That happened last nearly a year ago,...

Alicia Vikander and Jude Law command attention in Firebrand, a film directed by Karim Aïnouz that revisits the tumultuous relationship between Henry VIII and his sixth wife, Katherine Parr. The movie, framed as a psychological thriller, sets out to reinterpret historical narratives, shifting the focus from the infamous king to the resilient queen. Vikander’s Understated Brilliance Alicia Vikander delivers an understated performance with potential Emmy recognition, already having favorable odds of 5/1 in the Limited Series category for her role as Katherine Parr. Be thankful the days of Smell-o-Vision are behind us. When Jude Law signed on to play Henry VIII in Firebrand, he took his dedication to the next level by commissioning a special perfume with notes of puss, blood, sweat, and fecal matter. Lovely.
Firebrand takes place during Henry VIII’s final years when the King was suffering from festering wounds and ulcers. The foul scent that followed him was legendary, although both he and the court would pretend it wasn’t there. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Jude Law explained the fecal matter perfume.
“It was a very sensory set,” Law said. “What I mean by that is [director] Karim [Aïnouz] had such a unique perspective of history and how to create an authentic court. Being from Brazil, he really wanted it to feel human and tangible. So, he would leave the windows open in this castle that we filmed in, and...

There’s been much speculation about distributors being wary about taking films critical of Donald Trump for fear he will sue – most recently Ali Abassi’s biopic The Apprentice, which premiered at Cannes to great reviews. The former president hates the movie and backer Dan Snyder has disavowed it. But if you love the guy, there’s new a place to go.
This weekend sees the first film from conservative production and distribution outfit Global Ascension Studios, which is releasing documentary Relentless Patriot on about 700 screens. Directed by Christopher Martini, it follows Staten Island’s Scott LoBaido, an aggressively pro-Trump artist and activist who paints flags and courts controversy with in-your-face street performances. In a recent gambit outside the lower Manhattan courthouse where Donald Trump was on trial, he released 100 penis-shaped mylar balloons decorated with the faces of Trump adversaries.

Based on Elizabeth Fremantle’s 2012 novel Queen’s Gambit, Firebrand follows the story of Katherine Parr, the sixth (and ultimately last) wife of Tudor dynasty monarch King Henry VIII. During the film’s development, director Karim Aïnouz and writers Henrietta and Jessica Ashworth honed the story down to focus on a period four years into Henry’s final marriage. Queen Katherine has been named regent while Henry fights overseas. When the increasingly ailing and paranoid King returns, he turns his fury on the realm’s religious radicals, charging Katherine’s childhood friend with treason. Katherine soon finds herself fighting for her own survival in an increasingly oppressive palace. On the hope of a hereafter free from the tyranny that has defined blood-soaked Tudor England, Katherine uses...

In Firebrand, Alicia Vikander portrays Katherine Parr, Henry VIII’s sixth and final wife, who battles for her survival.
Throughout the film, she dons elaborate Tudor clothing, emphasizing her status as the queen consort. However, for the promotional tour of the Tudor-set movie, Alicia takes a different approach, making striking appearances in chic, contemporary dresses.

As we know from yesterday’s excerpt from an upcoming episode of The Playlist’s The Discourse podcast featuring Jude Law promoting his forthcoming film period drama “Firebrand” opposite Alicia Vikander (read our review), the actor basically turned down an early version of “Superman” when Brett Ratner was attached to direct.

Alicia Vikander and Jude Law came out to Tribeca Festival on Tuesday night for the premiere of their upcoming film, Firebrand.
The new take on Henry VIII’s life and his six wives focuses on his final spouse, Katherine Parr, who is named regent while the king battles abroad. When he returns ill and paranoid, and his court works to turn him against Katherine, she finds herself fighting for her survival.
Law, who portrays the notorious king in Karim Aïnouz’s film, was particularly interested in looking at the “decaying, regretful disintegration of this once, once great man,” who went down a very dark path.
“Then also the very simple fact that [Aïnouz] shifted the focus onto Katherine,” the Oscar-nominated actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “So, Henry was a player in a story about a great woman. He’s dominated the narrative of these six women for 500 years, and it was...

We’ve been waiting for a weekend like this one since last July, as for the first time in almost a year, we finally get a movie that has the potential to open with over $100 million. Fingers crossed! Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Although Disney and Pixar Animation have had a tough time in recent years due to a combination of the Covid pandemic and the advent of the Disney+ streamer, on Friday it will release “Inside Out 2,” the first theatrically released sequels to one of Pixar’s massive critical and commercial hits in five years.
The original “Inside Out,” directed by three-time Oscar winner and current Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter, opened with $90.4 million nine years ago. At the time, it was Pixar’s second-best opening, and it’s still the animation house’s best debut for a non-sequel. This sequel, directed by Kelsey Mann,...

One of the most lauded events of the Tribeca Festival, Chanel returned to host the 17th annual Tribeca Artists Dinner on Monday, June 10 at The Odeon in Manhattan, moving locations from Balthazar last year. The intimate evening honors the artists who have contributed original artwork to the festival’s award-winning filmmakers.
The carpet always feels like some sort of family reunion at this event, where much of Hollywood assembles in what feels like a — though glamorous — laid-back dinner to celebrate how far the film scene of NYC has come as it regenerated itself after 9/11. IndieWire favorites Robert De Niro, Jane Rosenthal, Katie Holmes, Blake Lively, Jude Law, Trevor Noah, Mark Ronson, Camila Mendes, Selma Blair, Colman Domingo, Chloe Fineman, Olivia Munn, Dianna Agron, Hannah Einbinder, Hari Nef, Lizzy Caplan, Lily Rabe, Natasha Lyonne, Victoria Pedretti, David Harbour, David O. Russell, and Francesca Scorsese were just a handful of the many attendees.

The opening title cards of Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand state that history is written primarily about men and war, while “for the rest of humanity, we must draw our own—often wild—conclusions.” For audiences, it’s a warning of the revisionism to come in this story of Katherine Parr (Alicia Vikander), the sixth and last wife of King Henry VIII (Jude Law).
It is, though, not a promise of a compelling or invigorating story. That’s because the filmmakers, as intent as they were to play fast and loose in the sandbox of history, hardly explore the motives and emotions that drive Katherine as she balances her fealty to her husband and her friend Anne Askew (Erin Doherty), the famed poet who fought for the cause of English Reformation.
Instead, what follows is an often shapeless and rudderless film, focused mainly on whether or not King Henry trusts Katherine.

Jude Law has been teasing audiences for decades now. His looks, charm, tenacity, and willingness to channel that success in interesting, unexpected directions have always been admirable. But one of his riskier pivots — perhaps only in retrospect — was David O. Russell’s 2004 ensemble black comedy, “I Heart Huckabees.” Co-starring Dustin Hoffman, Lily Tomlin, Jason Schwartzman, Mark Wahlberg, Naomi Watts, and many others, the film follows a group of interconnected lives all being investigated by “existential detectives.” Law had admired Russell and, unlike some of Russell’s past players, continues a relationship with the auteur to this day, but knows the film and the process of making it can be viewed with a negative light.
“The experience of making that film was bizarre,” said Law in a recent interview with Vanity Fair. “We were all there doing it for nothing, just loving being in each other’s company and playing. I remember fantasizing,...

Unfortunately it doesn’t look like Jennifer Lopez will be touring this summer after all. And while that’s certainly a crime against Pride Month if not humanity itself, it at least frees up some extra time–and money–to watch some movies. And while 2024 looks to be a rather tepid year for blockbusters, there are still plenty of Don’t-Miss Indies out there ready to crawl into your eyes and ears.

As the 2024 Tribeca Film Festival kicks off, IMDb is showcasing two new infographics that offer a unique look at the career of festival co-founder (and film legend), Robert De Niro. Created by Tableau-user Paco Llano and using IMDb movie data, the interactive visualizations display De Niro's acting credits in a "deconstructed filmography."
The charts break down De Niro’s career using design elements to represent different facets of IMDb movie data, including genre, IMDb rating, number of user votes, and more. These are just two of more than 600 infographics and interactive displays created by Tableau users who were encouraged to dive in and experiment with the data, thanks to a partnership between the business intelligence company and IMDb.
This year’s Tribeca Film Festival features the opening night world premiere of the documentary ‘Diane von Furstenberg: Woman in Charge.” Also featured are this year are high-profile narrative films like ‘Firebrand,’ starring Alicia Vikander and Jude Law, and more buzzworthy documentaries such as ‘America's Burning,’ narrated by Michael Douglas, and ‘Avicii - I'm Tim’ about the late DJ.
Take a tour of some of our favorite visualizations of IMDb data by Tableau users, including Robert De Niro's Deconstructed Filmography, deep dives on ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ and ‘Mean Girls,’ the films of Steven Spielberg, and more.

Simply put, Brazilian motels are places for people to have sex. Everyone knows it, no one objects to it. You pay by the hour and the suite is yours––a big bed, porn on-demand, bring red or blue lighting to illuminate the bodies as they merge––to fulfill your carnal needs. As well as a haven for horny people in transit, the motel is a place to return to and consummate a bond that deepens with every sexual act. Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz zooms in on one such location in Motel Destino, his sixth Cannes entry thus far, and second in the Main Competition. The northeastern coast of Ceará is where the film takes place. The cinematic version of Aïnouz’s home province glistens under the scorching sun of the equator, the sea lapping at the sand while crime is still what a lot of people do to get by:...

Those look for a libido-juicing kick at this year’s Cannes Film Festival surely found it in “Motel Destino,” the sexually explicit erotic thriller from Brazilian director Karim Aïnouz.
Competing in the main competition once again after “Invisible Life” and “Firebrand,” Aïnouz returned to his native Brazil to shoot this perverse psychosexual triangle about the owners of a sex motel along the country’s northeastern Atlantic coast, and the criminal drifter who disrupts their lives. The wild-haired Dayana (Nataly Rocha) operates the Motel Destino with her abusive husband Elias (Fábio Assunção), where she takes up an unhinged affair with Heraldo (Iago Xavier), and amid nonstop sucking and fucking, plot to kill Elias in the grand tradition of the great noirs. Except it’s a noir with a post-Hays Code, liberated twist that has rocked Cannes with its strong, pervasive sexual content, to use the language of the American Motion Picture Association’s ratings board.

A young man on the run from a mob boss lands an unlikely job in a brutally functional love motel and starts a passionate affair with the manager’s wife
As motel names go, it’s certainly more portentous than “Bates”. But destiny of a sort, shaped by class and money and family abuse, is waiting for the hero and heroine of this movie. This is an erotic noir thriller from Karim Aïnouz; a noir lit mostly by bright sunshine, shot with garish glee by Hlène Louvart. It takes place in a brutally functional love motel near the beach in the north-eastern Brazilian state of Ceará; this is a place from which the couple are fated to be expelled naked, like Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden.

Shot between his directing Alicia Vikander in “Firebrand” and Kristen Stewart in “Rosebushpruning,” “Motel Destino,” which bows in Cannes Competition on May 22, can be seen as a return by Brazil’s now most international director to his Brazilian roots.
This axis between international and local, plays out in “Motel Destino” and Aïnouz insists, in now his whole career.
An erotic thriller, “Motel Destino” turns on Dayana, the young wife of a roadside sex hotel owner who seduces on-the-run minor mobster Heraldo for great sex. But she soon conceives the idea of his helping her to kill her terrifyingly abusive older husband.
“I was really interested in a kind of Brazilian interpretation of melodrama and noir cinema, how to take genre, which begins in Hollywood, and appropriate it make it local and ours,” Aïnouz tells Variety.
“Motel Destino” is melodrama “in the sense these characters that are trying to survive, by any means.

Cate Blanchett’s new film “Rumours” took its name from the iconic Fleetwood Mac album, it was revealed on Sunday at a Cannes Film Festival press conference.
The dark comedy, directed by Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson, follows a group of world leaders who meet at the G7 — a political and economic meeting of the minds between Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States — but get lost in the woods while trying to compose a joint statement. Debauchery ensues, and there are romantic connections between a few of the politicians.
“I did confirm something with Galen last night, and it’s weird that it never came up in rehearsal, which is: ‘Why the hell is this movie called Rumours?'” Blanchett said at the presser. “And my husband had said, ‘Is that after the Fleetwood Mac album?’ And you said, ‘Yes it was.

Cate Blanchett blew kisses to the Cannes Film Festival audience as her new film, “Rumours,” earned a four-minute standing ovation at Cannes Film Festival on Saturday night.
The crowd welcomed the film’s dark humor, laughing throughout the entirety of the late-night screening. While some of the auditorium emptied out while the credits rolled, the majority of filmgoers waited patiently to pay their respects to the film’s stars. Blanchett’s “Rumours” co-star Alicia Vikander was notably not in attendance.
The film’s trio of directors — Guy Maddin, Evan Johnson and Galen Johnson — seemed surprised by Cannes’ relatively new tradition of handing the filmmaker(s) a microphone for post-screening remarks. They made a speech together after the applause wrapped, thanking the audience and quoting their own film by saying “it’s better to burn out than to fade away.”

Few companies in the world have had such as impact on their local film industry than Globo Filmes, the feature co-production arm of Brazilian giant Globo, which is Latin America’s biggest communications conglomerate. Over the last 25 years, Globo Filmes has backed more than 500 movies, almost all through co-production.
Those films have collectively sold 260 million cinema theater admissions, an average of over 10 million admissions a year, accounting for more than 70% of Brazilian market share from 1998-2024.
Globo Filmes greenlights more than 20 movies a year, powering up by far the biggest production slate of any company in Brazil, thanks to article 3A of the country’s audiovisual law, which allows it to tap tax incentives for investing in feature films.
Launching in 1998, Globo Filmes helped accelerate the Brazilian film industry’s recovery after President Fernando Collor de Mello shuttered state film agency Embrafilme in 1990, paralyzing production. Twenty-five years later, after a...

Exclusive: Vertical has acquired U.S. rights from AGC Studios to The Order, a dramatic thriller directed by Australia’s Justin Kurzel (Macbeth), on which we were first to report. Starring Jude Law (Firebrand), Nicholas Hoult (X-Men franchise), Tye Sheridan (The Card Counter), Jurnee Smollett (Birds of Prey) and more, the film will will have an exclusive release in theaters nationwide later this year.
Written by Oscar and BAFTA nominee Zach Baylin (King Richard), the film adapts Kevin Flynn and Gary Gerhardt’s book The Silent Brotherhood, chronicling the escalating crimes of the titular white supremacist domestic terror group. It’s set in 1983, when a series of increasingly violent bank robberies, counterfeiting operations, and armored car heists frightened communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Cannes isn’t Sundance. The movies on offer aren’t generally genre horror box office surprises or heartwarming indie dramedies, and sometimes they’re not even sure-fire Oscar hopefuls.
But as several sales agents and distributors told us, Cannes is slowly shifting back to being a home for discovery. With the audience now unbothered by subtitles, distributors aren’t just looking for the next “May December” but the next “Anatomy of a Fall.” And when it comes to the package titles on the Marché du Film, buyers are demanding more than the latest Nicolas Cage shark movie.
The sources IndieWire spoke to believe there’s more quality than quantity among this year’s official competition sales titles and the packages being shopped to distributors. And that’s a good thing, even though there are still plenty of hot packages trickling in by the day and buyers already scooping up competition...

Jude Law and Alicia Vikander star as real-life King Henry VIII and his sixth wife, Katherine Parr, in Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand trailer.
The film, based on true 16th-century events, follows Parr’s pursuit of survival in her marriage to the king, after the first five of his wives met untimely ends — divorced, beheaded, died, divorced and beheaded again.
“Katherine’s fate was to change the kingdom, forever,” the trailer’s narrator muses.
“When Henry appoints [Katherine] as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas, he lays a dangerous path for her,” the Firebrand synopsis reads. “Henry’s courtiers, suspecting she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs that have taken root in the kingdom and are a threat to their power, scheme against her and cast doubts upon her fidelity to the increasingly ailing and paranoid King.”

"Do you believe in Hell? I think we're both bound for it." Roadside Attractions has revealed the first official trailer for Firebrand, the latest from Brazilian filmmaker Karim Aïnouz. This first premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival last year, which is why they're debuting the trailer now just before Cannes 2024 kicks off soon. In a rotten, blood soaked island kingdom, there once was a queen by the name of Katherine Parr. The sixth wife of the vengeful King Henry VIII - and the only one to survive. This true story is about Queen Katherine Parr & Henry VIII's marriage. Adapted from the novel "Queen's Gambit" by Elizabeth Fremantle. With the hope for a future free of tyranny at risk, will Katherine submit to the inevitable for the sake of King and country? Alicia Vikander stars as Katherine Parr, Jude Law as Henry VIII, plus Eddie Marsan, Amr Waked, Sam Riley, Ruby Bentall,...

Lost a bit in last year’s Cannes shuffle was Karim Aïnouz’s Firebrand, a period piece starring (who else to put their superb skills into costume dramas) Alicia Vikander and Jude Law. With Roadside Attractions handling distribution, it arrives on June 14 and there’s now a trailer.
We were mixed-positive on Aïnouz’s film out of Cannes. As Savina Petkova said, “Even if Firebrand prefers to stay on the safe side of period cinema about the British monarchy––unlike Yorgos Lanthimos’ The Favourite or Pablo Larraín’s Spencer––Karim Aïnouz doesn’t fail his audiences. Maybe the ones who’d expect something more of his auteur touch would face some disappointment, but the general audience wouldn’t mind an exciting, superbly acted tale of emancipation and revenge.”

Alicia Vikander is unleashing all the fire and the fury as Queen Katherine opposite Jude Law’s King Henry VIII.
The two star in “Firebrand,” which debuted at Cannes 2023 and marked director Karim Aïnouz’s English-language debut film. During war-torn Tudor England, Katherine Parr (Vikander) reluctantly agrees to become the sixth wife of the tyrannical King Henry VIII (Law). Katherine hopes that her fate is different from her predecessors, the queens who were either vanquished, beheaded, or died of non-murder causes.
After their union, Henry appoints Katherine as Regent, the nation’s ruler during his absence when he departs to fight overseas. Yet that power makes Katherine a target as Henry’s courtiers begin suspecting that she’s sympathetic to radical Protestant beliefs. Once Henry returns to England, his courtiers convince him to convict a series of Katherine’s confidantes with treason and burn them at the stake.
