After three weekends of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” dominating to become the biggest blockbuster of the year, another animated sequel took over the 4th of July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal released Illumination Entertainment’s animated sequel “Despicable Me 4,” once again starring Steve Carell as the voice of Gru, into 4,428 theaters on Wednesday. After making $27 million on Wednesday, and another $20.4 million on July 4, the franchise favorite earned another $75 million (estimated) over the three-day weekend for a five-day total of $122.6 million, including Wednesday and Thursday. With that, the “Minions” franchise holds three of the biggest Fourth of July openings and the biggest since “Minions: The Rise of Gru” opened with $107 million in 2022.
Even though reviews were mixed at best with 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated it higher, going by its “A” CinemaScore.

Would theaters even be operating if not for animated films? It’s a fair question, heavily reinforced by this weekend when “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) combined to gross $105 million.
So far in 2024, animated features have grossed a little under $1 billion, more than 25 percent of the total gross. Take that amount away, it’s hard to imagine most theaters staying afloat. That’s a big increase from 2023, when similar releases made up around 18 percent.
The sixth entry in the “Despicable Me/Minions” franchise grossed about $75 million for the three day weekend, $122.6 million total for five days to take #1 with ease. “Inside Out 2” took second with $30 million, down only 48 percent despite strong new competition. That comes to more than two thirds of the $157 million total.

It was a big weekend globally for animated movies as Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” and Universal and Illumination’s “Despicable Me 4” cleaned up at the international box office.
“Inside Out 2,” already the biggest hit of 2024, continued to climb up the list of all-time animated releases, passing “Minions” to become the fifth-highest grossing film in the genre with its $1.22 billion global haul. Over the weekend, “Inside Out 2” earned $78.3 million from 45 major markets.
Running slightly behind, “Despicable Me 4” earned an impressive $73 million over the weekend across 73 markets. That pushes the Universal and Illumination film’s foreign grosses to $106.9 million and its worldwide haul to $229.5 million.
In the U.S., the animated sequel, which sees Steve Carell return as Gru, and pits him against his “Anchorman” co-star Will Ferrell, playing a French supervillain, topped the Fourth of July box office, earning $122.6 million stateside. Looking around the world,...

Gru and the Minions set off fireworks at the box office as America celebrated its birthday. “Despicable Me 4,” the latest chapter in Universal and Illumination’s long-running franchise about a recovering supervillain who trades world domination for a family life, dominated the competition, earning $122.6 million over its first five days of release and $75 million during the three-day weekend. The movie opened on Wednesday, allowing it to fully capitalize on the Fourth of July holiday.
But “Despicable Me’s” appeal transcends borders. Internationally, the film earned $106.9 million from 73 markets, bringing its global earnings to $229.5 million. Even better, “Despicable Me 4” carries a relatively economical $100 million production budget, which should make it very profitable for the companies behind it, to say nothing of all the Minions merch they will sell. For context, films at Pixar and Disney, Illumination’s main rival, routinely cost $200 million to make.

The "Despicable Me" franchise now has more No. 1 box office debuts than any other animated franchise, having surpassed the previous record of five No. 1 movies established by "Shrek" and its sequels and spin-offs. Of the six "Shrek" and "Shrek"-adjacent movies released so far, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" was the only one not to debut in first place (and it still went on to become a box office hit).
"Despicable Me 4" arrived in theaters on Wednesday this week and is on track to gross $120 million over its five-day extended opening, per Deadline. The record of six movie launches at the top of the box office charts includes the spin-off "Minions" and its sequel "Minion: The Rise of Gru," which capitalized on the popularity of supervillain (now former supervillain) Gru's army of little yellow lackeys. Sunday Am Writethru after Saturday Am Update: Despicable Me 4 bounced back from where we saw it earlier this weekend for a $27M Friday and $26.8M Saturday, which will result in a $75M 3-day and $122.6M 5-day.
Exclaimed Universal Domestic Distribution President Jim Orr, “What a tremendous debut for Despicable Me 4, one of the most beloved franchises in film. Gru, his family and the Minions have once again been embraced by audiences around the world for their cheerful cleverness and hilarity.”
What happened? Apparently, 7Pm and later showtimes were stronger than anticipated, with significantly better foot traffic than Wednesday and Thursday night. Also, as we have seen throughout this summer, Latino and Hispanic moviegoers showed up in big numbers, this time repping 41% of the crowd for DM4. Also, the movie performed incredibly evenly across North America, as well as Canada where the pic has an 8% share.

The animated sequel “Despicable Me 4” has stormed the box office, dethroning the record-breaking “Inside Out 2” after its three-week reign. The fourth installment in the popular franchise grossed an impressive $27 million on its opening Friday, setting it on track for a projected $120 million five-day opening weekend.
This strong performance comes despite mixed critical reception, with the film holding a 54% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the Despicable Me series has consistently appealed to younger audiences, for whom reviews are less influential. The franchise, including its Minions spin-offs, has now surpassed $4.6 billion in worldwide earnings since its 2010 debut.
Meanwhile, “Inside Out 2” continues to perform well, securing the second spot with an estimated $31 million for the weekend. Its domestic total has surpassed $515 million, making it the third-highest-grossing animated film of all time in North America. The Pixar sequel is now chasing “Incredibles 2” for the all-time animated record of $608 million.

The weekend numbers are starting to roll in (via Deadline), and Despicable Me 4 is on track for a terrific $120 million 5-day opening, with a $72 million weekend gross, which is about what we predicted earlier this week. It’s looking to open in the same range as Despicable Me 3, although it’s going to wind up with a softer opening than Minions: The Rise of Gru, which opened to a huge $107 million 3-day weekend in 2022. Whatever the case, the franchise is still a big moneymaker for Illumination, and it’s the second smash animated movie of the summer after Pixar’s Inside Out 2. That runaway hit sequel is on track for $33.1 million this weekend, with it passing half a billion bucks at the domestic box office earlier this week.

The Minions are going bananas for the holidays, with “Despicable Me 4” projecting a five-day opening of $120 million for the Fourth of July weekend. Playing in 4,428 locations, the sixth installment in Illumination and Universal’s animated series took in an additional $27 million on Friday.
It’s another triumph for the reliably commercial franchise, albeit notably pacing behind the previous entry “Minions: The Rise of Gru.” Bolstered by the viral trend “#Gentleminions,” involving young adults dressing in formal wear to attend screenings, “Rise of Gru” scored the biggest Independence Day weekend opening of all-time in 2022, with $123 million domestic over a four-day holiday window.
“Despicable Me 4” will still land one of the biggest Friday-to-Sunday grosses of the year, projecting $72.4 million over the three-day frame. That’d be the fourth-highest domestic opening of 2024, behind “Inside Out 2” ($154 million), “Dune: Part Two” ($82 million) and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” ($80 million).

A Quiet Place: Day One is the highly anticipated prequel film to John Krasinski‘s sci-fi film franchise A Quite Place. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the apocalyptic horror film shows us the day when the aliens in A Quiet Place franchise invaded Earth, and instead of the Abbott family, we see the story of a terminally ill woman who tries to survive in New York City with her cat and an English law student named Eric. A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in the lead roles, with Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Eliane Umuhire, and Nico & Schnitzel starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the intense survival thriller and alien invasion elements in A Quiet Place: Day One, here are some similar films you could watch next.

Spoiler Alert!Spoiler Warning for A Quiet Place: Day One
A Quiet Place: Day One ended with a shocking yet emotional scene, but the great thing about it is that it opens for discussion of a sequel. What happens to the boat fleeing Manhattan with Eric and Frodo aboard? Will Sam even survive despite her sacrifice? These are some questions that can only be answered in a potential follow-up film.

Director Michael Sarnoski is pretty much open to continuing the prequel franchise; however, he still hasn’t thought about the plot of the next movie. Fans should not fret, though, because A Quiet Place Part III is currently in development with John Krasinski at the helm.

Spoiler Warning: This story discusses plot points from “A Quiet Place: Day One,” now playing in theaters.
“A Quiet Place: Day One” is filled with tense silence, brutal kills and a moving ending, which leaves the door open for more apocalyptic horrors.
Oscar winner Lupita Nyong’o stars as Samira, a terminally ill cancer patient who leaves hospice to explore New York City with her service cat Frodo. But her trip is disrupted when alien creatures with ultra-sensitive hearing invade Earth. Sam, Frodo and Eric (Joseph Quinn), a young English law student then meet amid the apocalypse, attempting to silently navigate through one of the world’s noisiest cities in a moment when the slightest sound will cause the Death Angels to attack. Sam has another mission too — visiting a pizzeria in East Harlem from her childhood, across from a jazz club where her father used to play.

Lupita Nyong’o’s A Quiet Place: Day One isn’t just a prequel to a scream-fest; it’s a heroic journey echoing a personal loss. Stepping into a world choked by fear, Nyong’o’s character embodies resilience that mirrors the spirit of her Black Panther co-star, Chadwick Boseman.

Fireworks, barbecues and Gru. That’s how many Americans celebrated the Fourth of July, as “Despicable Me 4” topped the box office, earning a commanding $20.4 million.
The film, the latest entry in Universal and Illumination’s wildly successful franchise about a domesticated former supervillain, has earned $47.6 million in its first two days of release. It is projected to gross roughly $120 million over the five-day holiday — an impressive result for a production that carries a relatively economical (for an animated movie) $100 million budget. In contrast, many films by Disney and Pixar, Illumination’s main rivals, routinely cost $200 million to produce.
“Despicable Me 4” brings back Steve Carell as Gru and pits him against his former “Anchorman” co-star Will Ferrell, who plays a French foil named Maxime Le Mal, and Sofia Vergara as Valentina, a femme fatale and Maxime’s main squeeze. The first half of 2024 was not as kind to horror at the box office as it has been in recent years. In the pandemic era, horror had been arguably the most reliable genre around, particularly in 2022 and 2023. It wasn't until the blockbuster opening barely posted by "A Quiet Place: Day One" that a genre flick truly broke out this year. The question is, can Neon keep the hot streak alive when director Oz Perkins' "Longlegs" hits theaters? Hailed as one of the scariest movies of the year with near-universal praise from critics, it is certainly well positioned to do so, but it is going to be all about managing expectations.
It's important to understand that this was never going to be the kind of movie to make $20 million on opening weekend. It's a small movie hoping to do well for itself against a small budget, most likely in the $10 million range.

Gru and his mischievous minions are hoping to fulfill their patriotic duty and once again set off major fireworks at the Fourth of July box office.
Illumination and Universal’s Despicable Me 4, which opened Wednesday in theaters across the U.S., posted an opening day gross of $27 million for an estimated five-day holiday debut of $120 million at the domestic box office, including $70 million for more for the three-day weekend, according to early returns. That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which combined ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.
DM4 — earning a glowing A CinemaScore — will have no trouble wresting the box office crown from Pixar and Disney blockbuster Inside Out 2, which is now in its fourth weekend.

Gru and his gang of minions are setting off box office fireworks this Independence Day.
“Despicable Me 4,” the latest entry in Universal and Illumination’s wildly successful animated franchise, opened to $27 million on Wednesday. The sequel brings back Steve Carell as Gru, a recovering supervillain turned secret agent, and pits him against Will Ferrell as a French baddie named Maxime Le Mal. Yet it’s the minions, those anarchic, highlighter-yellow critters, who are the biggest attractions, having starred in not just the “Despicable Me” films, but also a series of spinoffs. Look for “Despicable Me 4” to earn roughly $120 million over the five-day holiday weekend.
That strong showing is welcome news for movie theaters, which have endured a bruising start to the summer after promising films like “The Fall Guy” and “Furiosa” bombed. Things have been turning around, however, with Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2,” Sony’s...

A Quiet Place has trodden a unique path, initially envisioned as a neat indie project. John Krasinski once reflected, We treated it like a neat little indie movie; it felt like an indie movie. We thought it was really special, really unique, and really different, but we were pretty sure we wouldn’t get much more than four or five high-fives from friends. And turns out we have a lot more friends that we didn’t even know about. The latest prequel, A Quiet Place: Day One, elegantly extends the franchise. Directed by Michael Sarnoski, who helmed the acclaimed film Pig, this...

Illumination and Universal’s “Despicable Me 4” is poised to light up the box office this Fourth of July weekend, with industry projections suggesting a potentially massive opening. The fourth installment in the main franchise and sixth in the overall Despicable Me/Minions series is expected to continue the franchise’s tradition of holiday success.
Early estimates from various sources indicate a strong performance for the animated feature:
A five-day holiday debut ranging from $110-$135 million, including $70-$85 million for the traditional three-day weekend. Potential for a $28 million opening day (Wednesday). Worldwide three-day opening projections between $140-$190 million. Total global earnings could approach $200 million when including overseas markets where the film has already opened.
These numbers align with the franchise’s previous July 4th performances. “Despicable Me 2” (2013) opened to a five-day total of $143 million, while “Despicable Me 3” (2017) started with $120 million over five days.

When Saber Interactive revealed A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead a few weeks ago, we didn’t get much in terms of the story details. That’s been remedied now with the official story trailer, which gives us a look at the tense, apocalyptic journey that awaits players later this year when A Quiet Place: The Road Ahead drops on PC via Steam, PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Series later this year.
As revealed in the trailer, the story for The Road Ahead centres around Alex, a young college student suffering from asthma and struggling to survive the end of the world alongside her boyfriend, Martin. But the nightmarish extraterrestrial creatures stalking her aren’t the only threat she’ll have to contend with, as she must through the ruins of civilization in search of a safe haven for herself and her family.

Ok, the 2024 box office has been a bit dire this year, but “Inside Out 2,” which crossed $1 billion worldwide in about two weeks, is giving the industry some hope. Also, “Bad Boys: Ride Or Die” and “A Quiet Place: Day One” have posted strong numbers so far, so maybe summer is finally taking off a little later than its usual theatrical start in May.

July May Be Best Box Office of 2024, but ‘Deadpool and Wolverine’ Is No Longer Guaranteed Summer VIP

After June’s box-office fireworks (total gross around $980 million), July has three major openings plus strong holdovers. All that — and the month could end up well short of July 2023.
“Despicable Me 4”, “Twisters”, and “Deadpool and Wolverine” are all expected to be standouts, with more strong grosses to come for “Inside Out 2” (Disney) and “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount). That leaves with month with the potential for reaching $1 billion, but that’s not a guarantee. This year has fewer top releases and nothing like the “Barbie”/”Oppenheimer” phenomenon; the nearly $1.4 billion of 2023 seems out of reach.
Then again, we predicted $700 million for June and thought that was optimism; turns out that was an underestimate of nearly 30 percent. “Inside Out 2” provided a massive overperformance (it grossed $470 million in June while tracking suggested $300 million for its whole run), while results were much better than expected for “Day One” and...

Echoing its worldwide box office standing, Indian sci-fi epic “Kalki 2898 Ad” debuted in third place at the U.K. and Ireland box office.

Inside Out 2 continues to dominate the box office, reaching an impressive $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales. The animated sequel from Pixar, featuring the emotional journey of Riley, stands as the No. 1 film in North America for three consecutive weekends. Despite achieving monumental success, another prominent release this weekend struggled to meet expectations. Kevin Costner‘s Horizon: An American Saga – Chapter 1 took a distant third place in North American theaters. The film, which boasts an estimated $130 million production and marketing budget, earned around $12 million. Proving that unpredictability still rules Hollywood, A Quiet Place: Day One...

Kevin Costner’s dream of over twenty years finally came to fruition earlier this week as his magnum opus Horizon: An American Saga released its first chapter. However, the response seemed to be lackluster as the $100 million film had a disastrous opening of only $11 million.
Costner’s co-star Michael Rooker, however, came to the film’s defense and urged audiences to give a chance to ‘real cinema’. He mentioned that TikTok had made people used to short-form content, thus discouraging them from watching three-hour epics like Horizon.

Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has revealed that her latest role in “A Quiet Place: Day One” served as an unexpected source of emotional healing following the loss of her friend and “Black Panther” co-star, Chadwick Boseman.
In the Michael Sarnoski-directed prequel to the popular “Quiet Place” franchise, Nyong’o portrays Sam, a poet battling terminal cancer amidst an alien invasion. The actress admitted to People magazine that tackling such a character was initially “daunting” and “scary,” as it required her to delve deep into the psyche of someone “facing their mortality.”
However, Nyong’o found that the role took on a profoundly personal significance in light of Boseman’s passing in August 2020 from colon cancer at the age of 43. “In the end, it was actually very therapeutic because I had just experienced not too many years ago the death of Chadwick Boseman, which shook me to my core,” Nyong’o explained.

Lupita Nyong’o is opening up about playing a woman with cancer in A Quiet Place: Day One and why it was a personal and “therapeutic” experience for her.
In the Michael Sarnoski-written and directed film, the Oscar-winning actress portrays Sam, a poet who is not only battling terminal cancer, but also aliens hunting humans based on sound.
Nyong’o recently told People magazine that it was “scary to have to go there” for a role that sees her character “really facing their mortality, even before this apocalypse takes place and whose life is slipping between her fingers.”
“That was daunting to have to go there, psychologically and emotionally,” she added.
But the role was notably personal because her close friend and Black Panther co-star Chadwick Boseman died at 43 following a private battle with colon cancer in August 2020.

Kevin Costner's long-awaited Western epic "Horizon: An American Saga -- Chapter 1" hit theaters this past weekend. This was a true passion project for the "Dances With Wolves" director, who put around $38 million of his own money, in addition to securing lots of other financing from mystery investors, to get the film made. It's the first in a planned four-film saga, with Warner Bros. set to release "Chapter 2" in mere weeks on August 16. Unfortunately, in the early going, this experiment has not panned out financially.
Opening against "A Quiet Place: Day One," the first installment in Costner's new franchise was buried. "Horizon" opened to a mere $11 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts for the weekend, scarcely above "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" ($10.3 million), which was in its fourth weekend of release. It certainly doesn't help that "Inside Out 2" has remained a juggernaut, passing $1 billion worldwide...

Apocalypses are a dime a dozen in Hollywood. Still, Donald Glover is putting a creative spin on the world’s end that combines his love of film and music in a way that could surprise you. After debuting the trailer for his new movie, Bando Stone & The New World, ahead of A Quiet Place: Day One, Glover is sharing the preview with fans online, and suddenly, I’m adding another movie to my must-watch list for 2024. Today’s Bando Stone & The New World trailer coincides with the upcoming release of Glover’s new album under his stage name, Childish Gambino, also titled Bando Stone & The New World.
In today’s Bando Stone & The New World trailer, Glover plays the titular Bando Stone, a singer who tries to deliver mail and then finds that most of the world’s populace has disappeared. Stone then crosses paths with two survivors, a mother,...

Families will not stop heading to the cinemas this week as Illumination/Universal’s Despicable Me 4 storms into summer with what’s looking like a $110M-$120M 5-day U.S./Canada opening at 4,000 theaters. This as Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2 remains strong after a third No. 1 weekend, that pic heading to half billion stateside before the week is up.
Already Despicable Me 4 has $25.5M from 20 offshore territories, led by Australia. With the addition of 52 markets on July 3 including Mexico, Spain and Brazil, the pic’s running overseas box office could jump to a total of $75M-$80M by Sunday. Those new markets look to deliver $45M-$50M for the weekend after debuting on July 3 including previews. All in, Despicable Me 4‘s global cume is bound to stand around $200M by Sunday.
DM4 is on a staggered release pattern abroad to take advantage of holiday play.

After the success of A Quiet Place, the post-apocalyptic tale of survival in a world inhabited by many blind, deadly creatures with too good a hearing, it was only a matter of time before the franchise expanded. Currently, John Krasinski's universe consists of two sequels and a newly released prequel that opens up the world even further.
A Quiet Place takes viewers back to the very beginning, to the day of the invasion: Day One proved to be even better than many viewers expected. A maestro of the horror genre Stephen King was no exception among the impressed crowd.

As we all know, surviving in the universe where A Quiet Place takes place can be very difficult. However, the stories told in the first two movies took place in the countryside, which makes staying quiet an easier task. This time around,...

In a move that underscores the rapidly evolving landscape of film distribution, Jeff Nichols’ latest directorial effort, “The Bikeriders,” is set to make its Video on Demand (VOD) debut on July 9, 2024 – a mere 18 days after its theatrical release. This swift transition from cinema to home screens reflects a growing trend in Hollywood, as studios grapple with changing audience behaviors and the financial pressures of the post-pandemic era.
“The Bikeriders,” a period drama starring Tom Hardy, Austin Butler, Norman Reedus, and Jodie Comer, tells the fictionalized story of the Vandals Mc, a motorcycle club rising to prominence in 1960s Chicago. Despite receiving critical acclaim, evidenced by its 81% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the film has struggled to find its footing at the box office.

One of the most surprising franchises in recent years, A Quiet Place: Day One brings the franchise back to theaters. The third film inside a decade, John Krasinski, Emily Blunt, and now Lupita N’yongo, has proven it’s got staying power. There’s a lot to like about the franchise, so much so that a few similar movies and shows have reached for similar material. A few of these movies existed or were in production alongside A Quiet Place. Yet their similarity speaks to Hollywood’s never-ending willingness to push out movies with similar themes and ideas simultaneously.
Suggested“I wanted to focus on that”: A Quiet Place: Day One Director Owes a Lot to Nicolas Cage That Made John Krasinski Handpick Him for the Spinoff The Silence (2019)
Unfortunately for The Silence, the Stanley Tucci and Kiernan Shipka starring movie forces its audience to imagine a world where sound attracts monsters.

The other night I was having dinner with a couple of industry veterans, both Oscar voters, who told me they had been talking to a top producer-financier who had seen two big studio movies coming out later in the year and both were fantastic.
The producer very enthusiastically praised Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II, said Paul Mescal was terrific and Denzel Washington extraordinary in it. He also saw the new Robert Zemeckis film Here, which stars and de-ages Tom Hanks and Robin Wright, also reuniting them from the 1994 Zemeckis film Forrest Gump. Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

Both that one and Scott’s 2000 Gladiator took Best Picture and now it appears both veteran directors will be back in the race — big time. Scott still has yet to win an Oscar, having been overlooked four times in the director race.

While filming A Quiet Place: Day One, Lupita Nyong’o says that Chadwick Boseman was on her mind.
In the thriller, the Oscar winner plays a poet with terminal cancer fighting for her life against a backdrop of an alien invasion.
“That was daunting to have to go there, psychologically and emotionally,” Nyong’o told People about playing a character who “is really facing their mortality, even before this apocalypse takes place, and whose life is slipping between her fingers.”
Nyong’o thought of her Black Panther co-star, who died of colon cancer in August 2020.
“In the end, it was actually very therapeutic because I had just experienced not too many years ago the death of Chadwick Boseman, which shook me to my core,” she said. “I definitely was thinking about that a lot.”
Nyong’o said that through this experience, she realized “that it’s really important to be reminded of our mortality,...

The very first thing that supervising sound editor/re-recording mixer Lee Salevan designed for Michael Sarnoski’s “A Quiet Place: Day One” was the opening title card high above the New York City skyline informing us that 90 decibels are the equivalent of “the sound of a constant scream.”
That became the baseline for the chaotic sounds that accompany the alien invasion of Manhattan in this prequel to John Krasinski’s blockbuster horror franchise. Sarnoski’s (“Pig”) conceit was simple: Sam (Lupita Nyong’o) is determined to grab the last slice of pizza in the city, joined by her adorable cat and Eric (Joseph Quinn), a shell-shocked law student from Kent.
“I absolutely adore the city,” Salevan, who lives in Brooklyn, told IndieWire. “And so it was super fun to destroy it at the same time we’re trying to make a love letter. And there are a lot of times that...

Actor Lupita Nyong’o has opened up about playing a woman with cancer in A Quiet Place: Day One.
Speaking with People, the Oscar winner explained how the memory of her friend and co-star, Chadwick Boseman, affected her performance in the film. Boseman played the titular role in the first installment of Marvel’s Black Panther, in which Nyong’o appeared as Nakia, and passed in 2020 after a private battle with colon cancer. She described taking on the Quiet Place role as “daunting.”
