Award-winning reporter and author Evan Wright, who was known for immersion journalism on American subcultures and writing the book Generation Kill, which he helped adapt into the HBO miniseries of the same name, died by suicide last week. Wright was 59.
According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner, Wright died by suicide on July 12 from a gunshot wound to the head at a residence in L.A.
In the weeks before his death, Wright had been promoting the new Max documentary, Teen Torture, Inc., in which he is interviewed about his time in The Seed, a South Florida-based so-called “scared straight” program for at-risk adolescents. In posts on X.com over the past week, Wright wrote about the experience and the kinship he feels with fellow survivors of the controversial programs, many of which have been shut down and reexamined as the lifelong trauma that can result from the extreme...

Rich Peppiatt’s Kneecap won the best Irish film award at the Galway Film Fleadh last night (July 14), and also took home the inaugural audience and Irish language film awards.
Kneecap, which scored the audience award at Sundance, was the Fleadh’s opening night film, with the band arriving in the city in their trademark anarchic style, on top of a Land Rover adorned with Palestinian flags and carrying flares.
The film is based on the origin story of the Irish-language rap trio from west Belfast. It is produced by Trevor Birney of Belfast-based Fine Point Films and Jack Tarling...

The film industry might have some of the best-paying jobs in the world, but it is not exactly a safe place. Despite using the most advanced equipment and employing the best professionals, accidents do happen. And they might leave quite a mark, as in Star Trek: First Contact‘s star Alfre Woodard’s case.

Actor Jonathan Frakes is best known for playing the role of Commander William T. Riker in Star Trek: The Next Generation. Frakes’ character served as the first officer of the USS Enterprise-d, reporting to Patrick Stewart’s Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and was a fan-favorite throughout the show’s run.

During an interview, Frakes reflected on his time on the hit sci-fi series. However, he was thankful for not having to deal with one aspect of the series that became troublesome for some of his co-stars. At the same time, Frakes also spoke about the challenges of being a part of the show’s ensemble cast, and here is what he had to say.

In the 1992 "Star Trek: The Next Generation" episode "Chain of Command, Part I," Captain Picard (Patrick Stewart), Dr. Crusher (Gates McFadden), and Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn) are called away by Starfleet to undertake a dangerous, very secret mission to seek out and apprehend a dangerous biological weapon being developed by the untrustworthy Cardassians. Picard needs to resign as captain of the USS Enterprise in order to undergo this mission, and he is replaced by one Captain Edward Jellico (Ronny Cox), a commanding officer with a dramatically different managerial style.
As a captain, Picard was open to suggestions, careful to keep a rapport open with his crew. Jellico, meanwhile, was stern, cold, and loved to micromanage. He hated casualness and jocularity, and expected everyone to be tightly wound. He wasn't a bad captain -- indeed, he was quite good -- but he was a terrible boss. The appearance of Jellico set many Trekkies' hearts aflame,...

Sony Pictures has debuted the brand new trailer for Afraid, an upcoming sci-fi horror film from Academy Award-nominated writer/director Chris Weitz (Operation Finale; About a Boy; American Pie) that introduces a whole new kind of terror to the world with Aia, who is basically a Siri-like family assistant that takes her job way, way too seriously.
The film's synopsis reveals, "Curtis (John Cho) and his family are selected to test a revolutionary new home device: a digital family assistant called Aia. Taking smart home to the next level, once the unit and all its sensors and cameras are installed in their home, Aia seems able to do it all. She learns the family's behaviors and begins to anticipate their needs. And she can make sure nothing – and no one – gets in her family’s way."

William Shatner was the face of Star Trek: The Orginal Series when it first aired in the ‘60s. The series created by Gene Roddenberry depicted the lives of the crew of the spaceship USS Enterprise as they embarked on intergalactic adventures. Shatner played the role of the enigmatic Captain James T. Kirk.
While the original series had a cult following, the franchise gained much of its fame when it was revived with films and a sequel series Star Trek: The Next Generation. However, creator Roddenberry reportedly clashed with the producers and writers of the new material, with the latter describing the experience as ‘claustrophobic’.

Star Trek: The Next Generation used to be a staple in the television industry in the late 80s and early 90s. Starring the likes of Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, and Brent Spiner among others, Tng went on for seven seasons, wowing audiences. Even after concluding in 1994, the show is still at a standing of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Brent Spiner, who primarily played Data in Star Trek: The Next Generation, was a fan favorite. While he also played a few other roles in the franchise, Data remains the one that fans still relate him to. He once spoke on his thoughts about whether the beloved show should get a reboot in the future. And given this is the era of reboots, with so many old shows and movies getting the treatment, it won’t be a surprise if fans get a newer version of Tng either.

Oh, Canada debuting this week on the Croisette is high time to see lesser-seen Schrader on the Criterion Channel, who’ll debut an 11-title series including the likes of Touch, The Canyons, and Patty Hearst, while Old Boyfriends (written with his brother Leonard) and his own “Adventures in Moviegoing” are also programmed. Five films by Jean Grémillon, a rather underappreciated figure of French cinema, will be showing
Series-wise, there’s an appreciation of the synth soundtrack stretching all the way back to 1956’s Forbidden Planet while, naturally, finding its glut of titles in the ’70s and ’80s––Argento and Carpenter, obviously, but also Tarkovsky and Peter Weir. A Prince and restorations of films by Bob Odenkirk, Obayashi, John Greyson, and Jacques Rivette (whose Duelle is a masterpiece of the highest order) make streaming debuts. I Am Cuba, Girlfight, The Royal Tenenbaums, and Dazed and Confused are June’s Criterion Editions.

Exclusive: Richard Gadd, the creator and star of hit Netflix series Baby Reindeer, has faced questions about his professional conduct after dating a transgender actress who auditioned for his show.
The actor was investigated and ultimately cleared of any wrongdoing by Baby Reindeer producer Clerkenwell Films after a romantic liaison in 2021 with Reece Lyons, who was interested in playing the role of Gadd’s ex-girlfriend Teri in the stalker drama.
Lyons went public with her experience on Twitter (now X) soon after Baby Reindeer premiered. She did not name Gadd or directly reference Baby Reindeer, but Deadline has verified his identity. Gadd declined to comment, while Lyons did not wish to comment beyond her X thread.

Junky romp from producer Kevin Hart sees two teens desperately search for prom dates with unfunny results
There are good reasons why many American teens stress about prom: it’s expensive, heightened, fraught with status and identity; the photos will haunt you forever; it’s a coming-of-age milestone freighted with significance, thanks in part to countless films and TV shows in which teens stress about prom. To that canon there is now a new throwaway entry: Hulu’s Prom Dates, a cringeworthy comedy produced by Kevin Hart, which posits that in the year 2024, two seemingly self-possessed girls sincerely believe that having a prom date – any prom date, but especially a cool one – is the single most important thing in the world. That it’s the one reason to stay in a cartoonishly terrible relationship, or go on a fishing expedition in search of passable strangers to drag back for one night in high school.
The X-Men: The Animated Series was a masterpiece in its finest form, and Larry Houston was one of the producers at the helm of it. Throughout the five seasons that it aired, fans were deeply in love with almost every story arc that the 1992 series decided to adapt. But even after such tremendous success with it, Houston still has one major regret about the show.

This regret is about his not exploring the character arc of a super-powerful yet long-forgotten hero, who was even more closely related to Scott Summers than what the non-comic book readers may expect. This character was Alex Summers, the younger brother of Scott and a mutant himself, best known as ‘Havoc.’ And as it turns out, Houston has immense regrets about it.

It seems unnecessary to say about one of the top three podcast publishers, but “Wondery Means Business” is the name of the first of six innovative marketing campaigns being pushed out by the Amazon company this year. Not that anybody doubts it. With 220 active shows, 72 million streams and more than 55 pods reaching No. 1 on Apple Podcasts, the studio known for such binge-worthy hits as Dr. Death and SmartLess is taking a new approach to its programming starting April 1, strategically timing the rollout of its most popular genres. “We are by no means abandoning the concept of one-show marketing,” says Bladimiar Norman, Wondery’s inventive head of global marketing. He adds he’ll be applying the tenets of his box office experience from working on franchises like Mission: Impossible and Star Trek to the audio business: “The primary goal here is to connect our IP to audiences and create fandom through experiences and moments.

I’m pretty lucky; I have lived through some major pop culture events: the Tim Burton Batman films changed comic book media, the birth of Image comics, seeing how Star Trek The Next Generation birthed a new fandom, etc. But one of the biggest events was seeing how animation wouldin a few short years change forever. The Simpsons is one example of how cartoons started to break new ground. Yet, there was one cartoon that broke the world of American animation. It was gross, it was crass, it was unlike anything we had ever seen. If the Simpsons were an explosion, Ren & Stimpy were the atomic bomb. Today many popular cartoons can all trace their origins back to an insane Chihuahua and a stupid big-nosed cat. It is undeniable Ren & Stimpy changed the face of animation. However, the story behind the show’s genesis is full of rebellion,...

A clash with Chinese New Year and the imminent launch of Hong Kong Filmart has resulted in a reduced presence from some parts of Asia at this year’s European Film Market (EFM).
It is hard to spot any Hong Kong exhibitor on the market floor of the Gropius Bau as sales and production companies from the territory are holding their latest lineups for Filmart, which begins on March 11, less than three weeks after EFM wraps.

Cine Argentino Unido, the new coalition group representing Argentinian film organisations, has called for a show of solidarity in Berlin amid an arts funding crisis in the South American country.
On Thursday the group issued a statement in which it hailed Argentina’s artistic presence in the Berlinale this year.
“What should be a source of pride for our entire industry, however, comes in a context of alarm and emergency for the cinema and culture of our country,” the statement said, in reference to firebrand president Javier Milei’s efforts to course-correct a stricken economy buckling under hyperinflation, huge debt,...

"Operation Rescue Owl is underway!" Screen Daily has revealed the first official promo trailer for an indie animated movie titled Fox and Hare Save the Forest, the latest creation from a Dutch filmmaker named Mascha Halberstad (following her film Oink previously). This is premiering at the 2024 Berlin Film Festival in the kid's section titled Generation - which kicks off this week in Germany. "The 3D animation follows a group of animal friends who embark on an adventure when a lake threatens to submerge their forest home, perhaps the work of a megalomaniac beaver." It centers on the adventures of best friends Fox and Hare. One day, they find out that Owl has gone missing, and they embark on a journey to find him. While the film is a 3D digital creation, it has a stop-motion look & feel by making the characters out of clay and scanning them. The voice cast includes Rob Rackstraw,...

The respectable Saturn Awards were first launched in 1973 by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films, and have been presented annually ever since.
"Star Trek: The Next Generation" has won multiple Saturns in the past, notably winning Best Genre Series twice during its initial run. Additionally, Patrick Stewart and Brent Spiner won Saturns for their acting, playing Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Lieutenant Commander Data respectively. Frustratingly, no other member of the show's venerated ensemble won Saturns for their performance.
Until now. As announced by TrekMovie, a special Lifetime Achievement Saturn award will be given to Stewart, Spiner, Marina Sirtis, Gates McFadden, Michael Dorn, LeVar Burton, Jonathan Frakes, and Wil Wheaton. That group represents the core ensemble of "Star Trek: The Next Generation," with most of them having appeared in all seven seasons of the TV series and in four movies. In Nicholas Meyer's 1991 film "Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country," Hikaru Sulu (George Takei) had moved from merely being a helmsman on the U.S.S. Enterprise to being the captain of a brand-new ship: the U.S.S. Excelsior. This new ship was equipped with a technology called transwarp drive, allowing it to fly more swiftly and nimbly than any other ship before it. In "Star Trek VI," Captain Sulu was exploring space near a Klingon moon called Praxis when a mining disaster caused the entire celestial body to explode. Later in the film, Captain Sulu would charge to the rescue, saving the Enterprise from a sneak attack by a cloaked Klingon vessel.
Captain Sulu's on-screen adventures ended there, although non-canonical sources continued to explore the character's career. In 1994 and 1995, a trio of audio-only adventures called "Transformations," "Cacophany," and "Envoy," all starring Takei, were released on CD and cassette,...

In 1991, when Debbie Gibson’s underrated third album, Anything Is Possible, stalled at #41 on the charts, the New York Times printed a full-page obituary for her relatively brief career titled “The Perils and Perishability of a Teen Idol.” In just a few short years, Gibson had gone from America’s sweetheart—anointed the youngest artist to write, produce, and perform a #1 hit—to being declared a pop casualty by the nation’s newspaper of record.
Only two years earlier, the Long Island teen had scored her biggest hit, “Lost in Your Eyes,” the lead single from her sophomore effort, Electric Youth. The album is arguably the weakest of Gibson’s four Atlantic releases, largely eschewing the sleek dance-pop and of-the-moment freestyle and hi-Nrg stylings of 1987’s Out of the Blue in favor of ostensibly more mature piano ballads and Motown-lite, which zapped her music of the exuberance that made her debut so charming.

On January 18, 2004, Showtime made history with “The L Word”: a spaghetti-strapped melodrama about twiggy lesbians living against a golden-filtered backdrop of mid-aughts Los Angeles.
The stroke of entertainment genius from creator/executive producer Ilene Chaiken premiered that Sunday night in two parts, introducing a revolutionary cast of LGBTQ characters who would change the face and ritual of lesbian pop culture forever. From the moment Jenny (Mia Kirshner) laid eyes on Marina (Karina Lombard)…even before Bette (Jennifer Beals) and Tina (Laurel Holloman) tried to steal that dude’s sperm…or Shane (Katherine Moennig) showed up wearing that leather vest….countless TV-loving shes, theys, and gays saw themselves reflected in a fizzy fictional universe that was finally, mercifully grounded in a semi-authentic lesbian reality.
Fast forward to 2019; the reboot happened. Showtime’s “The L Word: Generation Q” served as both a revamp of the initial concept with new characters and...

It’s a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma.
So says Joe Pesci’s David Ferrie during a critical scene in Oliver Stone’s JFK, a movie being revisited for a few reasons. One is that Shout Factory just put out a 4K restoration that reissues both the director’s cut and theatrical cuts of these films. But, we’re also revisiting it due to the fact director Oliver Stone, more than thirty years after the film’s release, is still utterly fascinated by the assassination. His recent documentary, JFK: Through the Looking Glass, served as a bookend to the film, while another documentary, Citizen Stone, is in production and examines how the film, in some ways, served as his undoing, a notion I can’t say I agree with.
Whatever the case, JFK is a fascinating piece of work that was one of the most provocative films of the 90s.

Globally renowned Italian comic book artist Mirka Andolfo, creator of the steamy series “Sweet Paprika,” is releasing a new comic titled “Blasfamous.” The story is set in a world where pop stars have ascended to divinity, dominated by a singer named Clelia who is loosely inspired by Lady Gaga.
The new eros-infused horror comic launches on Feb. 21 published by new American digital comics imprint Dstlry, co-founded by former Amazon execs David Steinberger and Chip Mosher.
Last year, Andolfo won a prestigious Harvey Award for “Sweet Paprika” — which was optioned by former Netflix exec Erik Barmak’s Wild Sheep for an animated series adaptation — and has been collaborating with DC Comics since 2015. She has done artwork for titles such as “Wonder Woman,” “Harley Quinn,” “DC Bombshells” and the upcoming “Batman: White Knight Presents – Generation Joker.”

321 films are in contention for this year’s Academy Awards, while 265 features are eligible in the best picture category, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced on Monday as it released its annual “reminder list” for members.
To be eligible in the general categories, films (meaning a runtime of more than 40 minutes) must open in a commercial theater in at least one of the following areas: Los Angeles County; the city of New York; the Bay Area; Chicago, Illinois; Miami, Florida; and Atlanta, Georgia, between Jan. 1, 2023 and Dec. 31, 2023. Additionally, it must complete a minimum qualifying run of seven consecutive days in the same venue.
To be eligible for the best picture category specifically, the movies must be eligible for the general entry and have “submitted a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standards entry form.” Additionally, the film must meet two of the four standards required, in addition to the theatrical component.

Does the possibility exist for Star Trek: Picard Season 4? And can the franchise continue to feature its iconic title character and his crew?
After it seemed like the voyage of Patrick Stewart's Jean-Luc Picard had come to a close following appearances in four Star Trek movies from 1994 to 2002, Star Trek: Picard debuted on Paramount+ in 2020 with Stewart back in the franchise.
The most recent season saw Patrick Stewart reunite with Jonathan Frakes, Gates McFadden, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis, and LeVar Burton, all of whom reprised their Next Generation characters.

Star Trek Nemesis just about marked the death of the franchise. Indeed, the fact that it was a worldwide box-office disaster meant that many felt the series had run out of steam. For the first time in many years, there were no active big-screen franchises or Trek shows running on TV, with the often neglected Star Trek: Enterprise going off the air in 2005. It seemed space operas were out of vogue, with the rise of superhero movies taking Hollywood by storm. Not only was there the Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies and the Christopher Nolan Batman movies breaking box office records, but also a little company called Marvel studios decided to start making the own movies, beginning with Iron Man.
But what about Star Trek? For a while, Paramount wouldn’t have been able to produce a Star Trek movie even if they wanted to, with the company’s owner, Viacom,...

In retrospect, it might look inevitable, the sticky-sweet commercial marriage between soda pop and pop music. (Catchy jingles worked. Why shouldn’t catchy hit songs work even better?) Exclusive: The Renny Harlin action thriller The Bricklayer, starring Aaron Eckhart (The Dark Knight) and Nina Dobrev (The Vampire Diaries), has been picked up by Vertical for a day-and-date release in the U.S. early next year.
An adaptation of the same-name novel by former FBI agent Paul Lindsay — who used the pen name Noah Boyd — the film also stars Clifton Collins Jr. (Westworld), Tim Blake Nelson (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), and Ilfenesh Hadera (Billions). The story is that of a rogue insurgent blackmailing the CIA by assassinating foreign journalists and making it appear the agency is responsible. As other nations begin turning against the U.S., the CIA must lure Steve Vail (Eckhart) — their most brilliant and rebellious operative — out of retirement. With an elite and deadly skill set, Vail is tasked with helping clear the agency’s name, forcing him to confront his checkered past while unraveling an international conspiracy.

Jon Stewart’s highly anticipated return to the talk show arena, “The Problem With Jon Stewart,” has come to an abrupt end, leaving fans and industry insiders surprised. The decision to part ways between the former “Daily Show” host and tech giant Apple was attributed to creative differences, as reported by multiple sources close to the situation (New York Times and The Hollywood Reporter).
Stewart’s show, which premiered on Apple’s streaming service two years ago, garnered significant attention and excitement. However, it seems that behind the scenes, tensions were brewing over the show’s direction, leading to its unexpected cancellation.
