Spoiler Warning: This story mentions major spoilers for “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” now streaming on Netflix.
Axel Foley is back in Beverly Hills, and so is Eddie Murphy.
“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F” director Mark Molloy set out to make a film with the same feeling and tone as the 1984 classic “Beverly Hills Cop” and its 1987 sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop 2.” He calls the latest film in the franchise “my love letter to the first two films.”
Molloy recruited Jahmin Assa, the film’s production designer, to pay tribute to those earlier chapters in numerous ways. Assa’s goal was to create something that made “Los Angeles feel timeless and as fresh as it did in the 1980s,” and that included shutting down city streets in Detroit and Los Angeles to finding the perfect location to execute a 1980s-style mansion shootout for the film’s third act, and crash...

Hollywood star Eddie Murphy, who recently reprised his role as Axel Foley in the fourth installment in the Beverly Hills Cop film series, had a childhood marked by the tragic death of his father, who passed away when he was just 8 years old.

The actor has admitted that while he didn’t remember much about his father, Charles Edward Murphy, he was aware of the circumstances surrounding his death, attributing it to what he described as the ‘Murphy charm.’

In a 1989 interview with Rolling Stone, the Beverly Hills Cop star Eddie Murphy discussed his distant memories of his father and the tragic circumstances of his passing. “I have very dim memories,” he said, noting that he was very young when his father passed away.

“Beverly Hills Cop” and its young exuberant star Eddie Murphy were dominant forces on the cultural landscape as soon as the action comedy opened Dec. 5, 1984 on 1,532 screens, earning over $15 million in its first five days of release. “Beverly Hills Cop” garnered nearly $235 million domestically and another $81.6 million internationally.
The comedy even earned an Oscar nomination for its screenplay while Murphy hit superstar status thanks to his dazzling comedic turn as Axel Foley, a freewheeling Detroit cop who is the ultimate fish out of water when a murder investigation leads him to the by-the-book Beverly Hills police department. And the soundtrack album featuring the film’s composer Harold Faltermeyer’s hit “Axel F,” as well as the Pointer Sisters‘ “Neutron Dance” and Glenn Frey’s “The Heat is On,” hit No. 1 on the Billboard chart.

It's been nearly 30 years since we last saw Axel Foley, the wisecracking Detroit cop played by Eddie Murphy, bring his street smarts to the posh streets of Beverly Hills. Now Netflix has revived the beloved franchise with the new film 'Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,' reuniting Murphy with original cast members Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Bronson Pinchot, and Paul Reiser.
This time around, Detective Foley heads back to Beverly Hills to save his estranged daughter and district attorney (played by Taylour Paige) from potential danger while investigating a murder. Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Paige’s cop ex-boyfriend, who joins in the mayhem as Foley and his pals uncover a conspiracy involving drug cartels.
How does the film stack up against the other movies in the Beverly Hills Cop franchise? Not bad, according to early IMDb user voting. Two days after premiering on Netflix, the fourth film has 15K votes with a respectable 6.7 average IMDb rating. That rating puts it above previous sequels ‘Beverly Hills Cop II’ (1987) at 6.5/10 stars and 134K votes, and 1994’s maligned ‘Beverly Hills Cop III,’ which sits at 5.5 with 90K votes. Unsurprisingly, the iconic original ‘Beverly Hills Cop’—directed by Martin Brest in 1984—has the highest score, with an impressive 7.4 rating with 209K votes.
If all this talk of Eddie Murphy and ‘80s buddy cop movies has you feeling nostalgic, IMDb spoke with the cast and crew of ’Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’ to get their favorite films from the ‘80s and their must-see Murphy flicks. Mark Molloy's "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F" succeeds in large part because it is unabashedly formulaic in a way many mainstream programmers are afraid to be nowadays (though we're not all fans here at /Film). Yes, superhero movies and four-quadrant family entertainments contain obligatory elements like Easter eggs for the properties' hardcore fan base and mid- or post-credit scenes to juice excitement for the next installment, but, narratively, the brand managers (i.e. filmmakers) feel a need to overdeliver. It's no longer enough to deliver a simple, well-told story. This is how ephemeral studio/streaming tentpoles wind up with bloated runtimes and obscenely inflated budgets. When viewers look up from their phones to check in on "Red Notice," they expect to see something of significance happening.

Although some younger audiences may not realize it, Eddie Murphy has been one of the biggest, most famous movie stars on the planet for more than 40 years. Part of the gap of knowledge for Gen Z might be the reality that Murphy stepped away from the limelight aside from a couple of notable titles that went straight to streaming over the last few years, such as the Amazon Original film "Coming 2 America," over the last decade. But Murphy is roaring back on screen this week with a vengeance by returning to one of his most recognizable and beloved characters in the new Netflix action comedy "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F." With his return to this now-40-year-old character in mind, it's worth looking at the whole "Beverly Hills Cop" series. The 1984 original is one of the seminal action comedies ever made, but how does the rest of the franchise hold up?...

Beverly Hills Cop Movies Ranked. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Eddie Murphy’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F arrived on Netflix on July 3, 2024, and has a solid Rotten Tomatoes score compared to its predecessor. The fourth movie in the franchise took nearly thirty years to arrive.
The last film, 1994’s Beverly Hills Cop III, was not well received by the audience and the critics. It grossed just over $42 million at the domestic box office against a $50 million budget. The film fared much better internationally, accumulating over $199 million at the worldwide box office.
Eddie Murphy first portrayed the cop with a swagger in 1984. The first film that saw hard-nosed Detroit cop Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) pursue a murder led to Beverly Hills grossed over $316 million worldwide against a budget of $15 Million. The original movie spurred the studios’ hunger for more. However, the sequels failed to echo the original film’s success, which...

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F’s Mark Molloy is now the latest in a long line of filmmakers who Jerry Bruckheimer has recruited from the world of advertising.
Having written or directed at least four commercials for Apple, the humble Australian filmmaker won’t allow himself to say that he followed in the same footsteps as fellow Bruckheimer discoveries Tony Scott and Michael Bay, but in his ongoing effort to change up the status quo, the celebrated producer has frequently found new talent through commercials and music videos. In the ‘80s, Scott was one of a handful of British commercial directors who took their unconventional styles to the States, and Bruckheimer and Don Simpson’s Top Gun (1986) served as his American debut. The massive success of that film prompted the two producing partners to quickly rehire Scott for Beverly Hills Cop II (1987), a film that Molloy channeled in Netflix’s...

“Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” the long-awaited fourth film in Eddie Murphy’s action comedy franchise, is now streaming on Netflix. It’s a 1980s throwback that features the return of old cast members like Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, and Bronson Pinchot.
To help communicate the film’s nostalgic vibe, Netflix hired Benedict Coulter, the editor who made the original “Beverly Hills Cop” trailer, to cut a new trailer in the style of his ‘80s work.
The result is a fun, high-energy trailer with a remarkably different feeling than modern trailers. This one skips the “trailer starts now” teaser before the actual teaser and that ubiquitous bass drop sound effect in favor of narration (lifted from the late trailer narrator Don Lafontaine’s voiceover for “Beverly Hills Cop II”) and a familiar song playing just beneath the dialogue for the whole thing: the Pointer Sisters’ “Neutron Dance,” which also soundtracked the original trailer.

This article contains spoilers for "Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F."
Actors almost never become movie stars overnight. Even the born-to-dazzle likes of Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, and Paul Newman needed a bit of runway to soar to that rarified Hollywood air. Eddie Murphy, however, needed just one moment in his first movie to become a generational showbiz phenomenon.
That moment arrived 38 minutes into Walter Hill's 1982 action-comedy hit "48 Hrs.," when Murphy's furloughed criminal Reggie Hammond convinces Nick Nolte's Detective Jack Cates to let him shakedown a redneck bar's racist patrons for information on the whereabouts of a cop killer. Reggie, tired of Cates insistence that it takes "bullls*** and experience" to successfully interrogate suspects, invites the officer to "Come on in and experience some of my bulls***." Armed with nothing but Cates' shield and his mouth, Reggie bullies cows a saloon full of hostile white folks into terrified silence.

Exclusive: It’s no accident that a new trailer for Netflix’s Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F looks and sounds a heckuva lot like the trailer for the original 1984 movie starring Eddie Murphy.
That’s because it was made by Benedict Coulter, the veteran editor who cut the first trailer for Beverly Hills Cop 40 years ago while working for Kaleidoscope Films. At the time a frustrated musician who ended up at one of those Hollywood trailer companies, Coulter was one of only a handful of artists who cut trailers for motion pictures back in the days of leg warmers, Michael Jackson wannabes and the Pointer Sisters.
Coulter’s unique style was to make kick-ass teasers with unforgettable songs (he would go on to cut the trailer for Top Gun). Netflix was so enamored with the way Coulter promoted Murphy’s breakout performance that it asked Coulter to cut a special...

Nostalgia, when it comes to reviving an old movie series, can be axiomatic. Every so often you see a genuine great piece of nostalgia — like “Creed” or the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot or the 2014 “Godzilla.” But then there’s the kind of nostalgia represented by “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F.” Plotted like a generic police-corruption thriller, lit with cruddy efficiency, pausing every 10 minutes or so for a “light” moment, the movie is no “Beverly Hills Cop.” But it’s better than the ballistic noise orgy that was “Beverly Hills Cop II” (1986) or the clunky retro mess of “Beverly Hills Cop III” (1994), so I guess we should be grateful. And I suspect that a lot of viewers who grew up in the ’80s will be.
Let’s be clear, though, about the level of nostalgia this movie is aiming for. “Axel F.” is studded with moments that are designed to be time-machine triggers,...

Eddie Murphy was only 23 when "Beverly Hills Cop" arrived in theaters in 1984, and the action comedy helped make him a superstar. Murphy's raw talent was already apparent thanks to his work on "Saturday Night Live," a show he joined when he as 19. His feature debut in Walter Hill's 1982 flick "48 Hrs." took him even further, as did his follow-up movie, 1983's "Trading Places". But "Beverly Hills Cop," directed by Martin Brest, helped solidify that Murphy was the real deal; a bonafide movie star. It was a mega-hit, and almost immediately made trash-talking Detroit cop Axel Foley an iconic character. Murphy was so cool, so confident, so suave that he took the character to extreme heights, taking a high concept pitch — what if a tough city cop ended up in posh Beverly Hills? — and creating movie magic in the process. Like Eddie Murphy, Axel Foley was young, hip, and in-demand.

Driving into town in his beat-up Chevy Nova, Detroit detective Axel Foley (Eddie Murphy) still cannot believe the sights of Beverly Hills. He looks with bewilderment at high-fashion stores, a man dressed like a rockstar, and a blonde in a Corvette who offers a playful wink despite her boyfriend in the adjoining seat. Foley ends the sequence with his infectious chuckle, out of place in Beverly Hills but not out of ideas.
When Foley returns 40 years later for Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, he repeats the drive in yet another beat-up vehicle. He notices a new set of California absurdities, including a child shooting video for his Instagram modeling mother and a woman in full burka passing Tom Ford’s store. But nothing here shocks Foley these days. Nothing drives him to his classic chuckle. Instead he gives it all a knowing smile and drives on.

There are a few valid reasons to make a sequel four decades down the track from an action-comedy blockbuster that left an indelible pop-cultural imprint: 1. A smart script with a completely fresh take on a formulaic genre. 2. Writing that digs into the ways an iconic character known for his rule-breaking irreverence adjusts to the social shifts of a different century. 3. New technology that allows for more explosive thrills. 4. The nostalgia of audiences for whom the original holds enduringly fond memories. 5. Lil Nas X agrees to write and perform a song, spinning rap verses around synthmeister Harold Faltermeyer’s catchy theme tune.
Sauntering along 30 years after the third installment opened to scalding reviews and underwhelming grosses, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F justifies its existence only with points 4 and 5. Which will likely be enough to satisfy diehard fans. Directed with journeyman efficiency by first-timer Mark Molloy and written by a committee that...

At long last, Eddie Murphy is reprising his role as street-smart cop Axel Foley in the fourth instalment of the Beverly Hills Cop franchise, which is set to hit Netflix this summer. But, it isn’t easy being a middle aged action star. It’s been nearly thirty years since we last saw Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley, and in a recent interview with People Magazine he admitted that the shoot was a “rough one”.“I did Axel Foley when I was in my 20s. I am not in my 20s anymore,” he said. At any rate, Murphy won’t be the only aged actor from the original to show up, with many of the classic Beverly Hills Cop cast members are set to join him in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley. There are a lot cult classics from the 1980s, but Road House stands somewhere near the top. Sure, many of its fans wouldn’t label it as such, since they lovingly, legitimately and unironically adore it. But there’s no use in arguing it belongs in one camp over another or that it is unapologetically everything it sets out to be. But it – and its cult following – couldn’t have happened without a few broken ribs, a don’t-take-no producer and some pervy late-night phone calls to a star’s spouse. Yes, it involves Bill Murray… So, pour some suds and rip some throats because we’re gonna find out: Wtf Happened to this Movie?!

Paramount Pictures had good reason to believe Adrian Lyne's "Fatal Attraction" would be another box office smash for the hit-making studio (which had just dominated 1986 with five of the ten highest-grossing movies of that year — including the top two in "Top Gun" and "Crocodile Dundee"), but they couldn't have anticipated the film becoming a full-blown, adult-skewing blockbuster. Nevertheless, the erotic thriller about an extramarital fling that turns into a waking nightmare for the happily married Dan Gallagher (Michael Douglas) outperformed such heavy hitters as "Beverly Hills Cop II," "The Untouchables," and "Lethal Weapon" to become the second highest-grossing film of 1987 (behind the four-quadrant behemoth "Three Men and a Baby").
Why was the film such a pop cultural sensation? Every single element clicked perfectly into place. Lyne brought the sensual heat, James Dearden's screenplay tightened the screws with nerve-jangling precision, and the stars absolutely smoldered. Douglas and Glenn Close...

As Hollywood neared the midpoint of the 1980s, the industry had abandoned the risk-taking ethos of the 1970s and unabashedly embraced formula filmmaking. Stars still mattered, but the pitch was king. Studio executives keen on becoming their generation's Jack Warner, Daryl Zanuck and Louis B. Mayer were through humoring unpredictable auteurs like Martin Scorsese and Hal Ashby. They wanted can't-miss high-concept projects powered by high-wattage stars that could play for months on end in theaters because, despite the skyrocketing value of home video and pay cable channels, theatrical was still king.
"Beverly Hills Cop" traversed a rocky path from inception to production, but producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer doggedly developed and re-developed the project until they paired a 23-year-old comedy superstar with a once-hot director who'd two years prior gotten himself fired off "WarGames." The particulars of the fish-out-of-water plot shifted many times over the years (it was nearly...

Eddie Murphy’s Axel Foley adventures are coming to 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray, as Beverly Hills Cop III gets announced for the format.
2024 is the year that the long-mooted fourth film in the Beverly Hills Cop series finally happens, with Netflix bringing Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F to our screens later this year.
It’s the first time that Eddie Murphy has taken on the lead role since 1994’s ill-fated Beverly Hills Cop III, a film that brought the saga to a shuddering stop when it stumbled at the box office. But still: there’s a chance to reassess that third film now, as Paramount is releasing it on the 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray format.
In fact, it’s doing two things. Beverly Hills Cop III will be coming to 4K disc on February 19th in the UK. And it’s accompanying that with a boxset that features Beverly Hills Cop...

Tim Burton's horror/comedy "Beetlejuice" was surprising when it was released in 1988. The plot follows a kindly couple named the Maitlands (Alec Baldwin and Geen Davis) who live in a beautiful small town far away from any big city. They are blissfully married and enjoy books and crafts. The Maitlands die in a car wreck, becoming ghosts who have to slowly figure out the rules of the afterlife. Shortly thereafter, a gaggle of obnoxious yuppies move into their home, and the Maitlands prove ineffectual at scaring them away; the vintage sheets they wear as their makeshift death shrouds aren't exactly terrifying to a zonked-out art snot (Catherine O'Hara) dizzy with valium. The yuppies' Goth daughter Lydia (Winona Ryder) is the only one who can see the Maitlands outside of their shrouds, and is more bemused that she's living with ghosts than scared.
Eventually, the Maitlands have to enlist the...

Once upon a time, Hollywood studios made original movies. Lots of them. Granted, "original" is a relative term when we're talking about this industry. Studios have always hedged their bets by relying on popular genres or recycling tried-and-true formulas. When a film went into production, moguls and executives were hoping for a healthy return on their investment, while stars generally tried their damnedest not to alienate their fans while avoiding the perils of typecasting. Once the film wrapped, it was on to the next one — and the next one was rarely a sequel.
This business model changed drastically in the 1970s when films like "The Godfather," "The Exorcist" and "Love Story" became wildly profitable cultural phenomena. When the studios realized people were lining up to see these movies again and again like they were amusement park rides, they reasoned that the safest course of action would be to continue the...

The heat is back on in this episode of Revisited, as we follow up our last outing with Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop with the inevitable sequel. Part one proved to be such a mammoth hit that not only helped send Eddie Murphy’s career into the stratosphere but it guaranteed that part two wouldn’t be too far away.
If you take a look back at the 1980s, which is something we love to do here at JoBlo, there are many franchises that started in the era and still have longevity or an influence in modern Hollywood. However, when you have a movie as popular as Beverly Hills Cop, that doesn’t necessarily mean that a sequel will match the quality of the first, and it’s been a problem that Hollywood has faced over the years. Ben Affleck’s latest directorial effort, the Amazon theatrical release “Air,” has scored the Oscar-winning filmmaker some of the best reviews of his entire career and also probably earned Affleck a spot on many future Spotify Wrapped year-end playlists. The basketball drama about Nike’s efforts to sign Michael Jordan to a lucrative sneaker contract starts with the Dire Straits hit “Money for Nothing” and includes numerous ‘80s favorites throughout.
But Affleck doesn’t just include radio hits on the film’s soundtrack. As revealed by Film Music Reporter – and as known by anyone who has seen the movie thus far – “Air” also heavily features classic ‘80s film score in lieu of its own complete original score. Among some of the movie, scores included in “Air” are “Firestarter,” “Three O’Clock High,” “Risky Business,” “Beverly Hills Cop” and “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Desperately Seeking Susan,” “Raw Deal,” and “Body Double.” Composer Paul Haslinger,...

Quentin Tarantino usually directs the screenplays he’s written. But one notable exception is True Romance. It was Tarantino’s first script for a major film, and it was directed by Top Gun and Beverly Hills Cop 2 director the late Tony Scott. Patricia Arquette, who starred in the film alongside Christian Slater, thought Scott was the perfect choice to direct the film, which has gone on to become a cult classic. Talking about the late director, Arquette raved about how Scott created a collaborative environment on the True Romance set. (Click on the media bar below to hear Patricia Arquette) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/Patricia_Arquette_Tyure_Romance_.mp3 True Romance is available on DVD, Blu-Ray, 4K, and most digital platforms.

Tom Whitlock, who wrote the lyrics for the rock anthem “Danger Zone” and the chart-topping love song “Take My Breath Away” for the original Top Gun, winning an Oscar in the process, has died. He was 68.
Whitlock died Saturday at a memory care center in Gallatin, Tennessee, a spokesperson at the Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri, confirmed. He had Alzheimer’s disease, friends told the Springfield News Leader.
Whitlock wrote both Top Gun songs with Giorgio Moroder. Their relationship began when he fixed the brakes on the Italian composer’s Ferrari.
“Danger Zone,” performed by Kenny Loggins, was employed for the opening scene in the Tony Scott-directed, Tom Cruise-starring 1986 action movie, while “Take My Breath Away,” sung by Terri Nunn of Berlin, inspired the filmmakers to shoot additional scenes with Cruise and Kelly McGillis months later.

Kymberly Herrin, who played the “Dream Ghost” in Ghostbusters and appeared in a Zz Top video that cemented the band as MTV stars, has died. She was 66.
Her family told the Santa Barbara News-Press that Herrin died October in Santa Barbara but did not provide a cause or other details.
Herrin was a model who covered more than a dozen magazines and was a two-time Playboy Playmate before being cast in the 1984 music video for ZZ Top’s “Legs.” The clip was a third in an over-the-top trilogy that also included “Gimme All Your Lovin'” and “Sharp Dressed Man” and had made the Texas boogie trio regulars of the then-nascent cable channel. Kymberly Herrin, an actress and Playboy Playmate best known for her brief role as an enchanting ghost in 1984’s “Ghostbusters,” has died at the age of 65.
The Santa Barbara News-Press published an obituary stating that Herrin had passed away peacefully in her home in Santa Barbara, California, on Oct. 28.
Herrin’s niece, Theresa Ramirez, shared a photo on Facebook of her aunt with her two late sisters with the caption: “They are all together now. Aunt Kymberly Herrin. I love you.”
Herrin was a model and an actress, appearing on magazine covers as well as feature films. Her most memorable onscreen moment was her brief portrayal of a “dream ghost” during a montage midway through Ivan Reitman’s original “Ghostbusters.” It was an infamously R-rated joke in a PG-rated movie (a year before the PG-13 came into existence), one that was lost on most kids first watching the film at a young age.

Making a massive action film like "Top Gun: Maverick" requires a meticulous amount of planning and attention to detail. One of the reasons that the blockbuster legacy sequel works so well is the commitment to not have an overreliance on the intrusive digital effects and CGI that dominate most of the big-budget landscape. That choice was decided well before one frame of film was shot, thanks to Tom Cruise's dedication to aviation and the entire field of stunt work over the past 40 years.
When Tony Scott's original "Top Gun" barreled its way into cinemas in 1986, practical effects were still king and audiences connected more with everyday heroes instead of caped crusaders. Scott's trademark visual style and the real-world flying captured by cinematographer Jeffrey Kimball helped wow audiences that had really never seen anything that eye-popping combined with the undeniable star power and magnetism of Cruise.

After decades in development, Beverly Hills Cop 4, which is officially titled Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, is finally in production. Netflix is setting this up to be one of their big blockbusters for 2023, which is only fitting considering that the first Beverly Hills Cop was the biggest movie of 1984 (beating Ghostbusters at the box office), while Beverly Hills Cop II was another major hit, ranking in the top 3 movies of 1987. But what about Beverly Hills Cop 3? Not only was that movie not a box office hit, but it effectively ended the franchise for nearly thirty years. It was so bad that many thought it was the final nail in the coffin of Eddie Murphy’s career, only for the star to rebound in a big way two years later with The Nutty Professor.

Eddie Murphy turned 61 years old this year, which makes him roughly the same age John Wayne was when he played the out-to-pasture codger Rooster Cogburn in "True Grit." That film, and Wayne's subsequent Westerns, had an elegiac, one-last-ride feeling to them. Yes, the Duke's cancer was in remission at this point, but he still looked washed. When he finally succumbed to the disease on the eve of the 1980s, the book quietly closed on an outmoded era of Hollywood filmmaking. It was time. Of all the golden age stars, Wayne was uniquely unsuited to the coked-up, strip-club glitz pioneered by producing teams like Don Simpson/Jerry Bruckheimer and Jon Peters/Peter Guber.

Eddie Murphy is reuniting with his original “Beverly Hills Cop” co-stars — Judge Reinhold, John Ashton, Paul Reiser and Bronson Pinchot — for the upcoming sequel, “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley.”
Netflix picked up the rights in 2019 to release the next “Beverly Hills Cop” movie, which is currently in production.
“Axel Foley” is the fourth installment in the hit action-comedy franchise, following 1984’s “Beverly Hills Cop,” 1987’s “Beverly Hills Cop II” and 1994’s “Beverly Hills Cop III.” For the fourquel, producers opted to ditch the roman numerals and instead name the film after Murphy’s fish-out-of-water character, a Detroit police officer who travels to Los Angeles to investigate crimes.

Right now, the name Chris Rock is synonymous with one thing: The Slap at the March 27 Oscars. However, Rock’s career is a lot more varied than that one incident, though there are several clues in his work leading up to that moment.
May 20 marks the 35th anniversary of his movie debut as a parking valet in the 1987 “Beverly Hills Cop 2.”
Variety’s review described it as “noisy, numbing, unimaginative” and didn’t mention Rock. A year later, however, he got a shout-out in the Dec. 9, 1988, review of “I’m Gonna Git You Sucka,” with Variety enthusing, “Chris Rock turns a walk-on into a standout” as a customer in a rib joint.
Rock’s first big break came in 1984, when he booked a splashy standup gig in 1984 at Catch a Rising Star in New York. Eddie Murphy saw and mentored him, Rock continued to work, and soon he made his...

The world got a little less funny and significantly quieter on Tuesday following the death of Gilbert Gottfried at 67. The self-deprecating stand-up comic, known for squinting, shrieking, cackling, and hammering a joke to death until it was so unfunny it became funny again, got his start on “Saturday Night Live” in 1980, had a slew of comedy specials over the years, made legendary frequent appearances on “The Howard Stern Show,” and appeared in small roles in films like “Beverly Hills Cop II,” “Problem Child,” and “Meet Wally Sparks.”
It was in 1992, however, when he voiced the role of an evil parrot in “Aladdin” that he became mainstream. (“Aladdin on Broadway” took a moment to honor him on Tuesday.) Much to the delight of comics who liked to razz him, Gottfried found his niche voicing animals for kiddie films like “Dr. Doolittle” and in ubiquitous, annoying commercials for secondary health insurance. He...
