A certain meme sprung to mind when I awoke to last week’s double-whammy of old-school anime remake news. It’s that panel from a Watchmen comic where Dr. Manhattan sits pensively in isolation on the surface of Mars and is usually made to lament how time is a flat circle, a recent example of which remarked on Ghostbusters and Dune competing at the box office in three separate instances since 1984. Anime is hardly different from other mediums when it comes to rebooting or remaking older material for newer audiences, though it's arguably been slower to dig deeper for inspirations. In the last couple of years, we’ve mostly seen updates of adaptations that originate from the early 2000s or late '90s like Fruits Basket , Trigun , Shaman King , Spice and Wolf , Bartender , Tokyo Mew Mew , Forest of Piano , Orphen and so forth. A few recent exceptions include Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai...

Eddie Murphy has made sure to don some of the most fan-favorite roles throughout his star-studded career, with his iconic Beverly Hills Cop role of Axel Foley ranking as one of his best ones to date. Even then, despite holding some really significant titles to his role like Coming to America and Trading Places, the actor holds some serious regrets about the roles he turned down.

While one of the roles that he was offered but couldn’t take on included one from the critically acclaimed Ghostbusters film franchise, it wasn’t the only one. As it turns out, one other $351 million comedy movie that he was offered but ended up turning down eventually became one of his biggest regrets in Hollywood. It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

If Universal Pictures decides to drag out the body of Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s 2004 horror-comedy masterpiece Shaun of the Dead from its resting place and give it the unholy franchise undeath treatment, all the vinyl pressings of the Batman soundtrack in the world won’t be able to stop them.
Wright and Pegg’s landmark Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy concluded over a decade ago, and the latter actor/writer has been clear in the ensuing years that he’s moved on from playing different flavors of the action-comedy leading man role in quippy, science fiction-y cult classics. While many fans of Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and, to a lesser extent, The World’s End still feel that their personal favorite of the landmark films could and should have been a franchise, last year, Pegg called the nostalgic attachment that causes his Twitter followers to demand sequels to...

Coming-of-age films have been around for decades, but they seemed to really hit their stride in the 1980s. Films centering around first love, outsiders and bullying rose in popularity throughout the decade, and one of the most beloved turns 40 years old this summer. “The Karate Kid” opened June 22, 1984 and unleashed a new idol for teens to adore, boosted the popularity of martial arts in the U.S. and skillfully delivered the lesson that inner strength is just as powerful (even more so) as outer strength. Let’s take a look back at a classic that proved that a film doesn’t have to have big name stars to become a blockbuster. Read on for more about “The Karate Kid” 40th anniversary.

At long last, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, the fourth film in the franchise (and the first in thirty years) is out, with it streaming on Netflix. We’ve certainly done our fair share of coverage for the movie here on the site, with me being lucky enough to interview Eddie Murphy and much of the cast while also attending the premiere in Beverly Hills. But how does the film stack up as far as the rest of the franchise goes? Of course, that can mean only one thing – it’s time for our Beverly Hills Cop Movies Ranked list! This time, we’re doing from worst to best, so buckle up! And – while you’re at it check out our LiveStream from last night, where our host, Kier Gomes, did his own rankings!

Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F. Courtesy of Netflix © 2024. The Beverly Hills Cop franchise celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and what better way to celebrate than with a new film? Eddie Murphy returns to the role of Axel Foley in Beverly Hills Cop: Axel Foley, which revisits the iconic character after a 30-year break. Of course, it’s not the only character from the ’80s to be resurrected lately — in the last few years, we’ve seen films that brought back Indiana Jones; Tom Cruise’s Top Gun character, Maverick; and the Ghostbusters crew. Murphy spoke about the new movie and his old character, he told us why he believes Axel Foley has a timeless appeal. The Fun Pimps is the studio behind 7 Days to Die, a game with a massive community of players. This title has achieved over 18 million sales worldwide and is available on PS4, Xbox One, and PC. In a recent Reddit post, players discovered a new, terrifying enemy.
Additionally, the community noticed that this enemy bears a strong resemblance to a character that once appeared on South Park. The reaction from other users was unanimous, with many saying they have no idea what this creature is, and other players are just afraid.

This year gifts us the 40th anniversary of the major motion picture “Streets of Fire.” In 1984, Walter Hill’s ambitious “rock & roll fable” sported a killer soundtrack and an all-star cast, how could it possibly have failed? Oh, right, it was released against both “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” and “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” (the summer of 1984 was stacked). And that aforementioned all-star cast? Including Diane Lane, Willem Dafoe, Rick Moranis, Bill Paxton, and Amy Madigan? None of them were famous yet.
But, over the past 40 years, Hill’s “Streets of Fire” has developed quite a robust following. (In 1984, its biggest cultural footprint was probably the song “I Can Dream About You,” performed by fictional group The Sorels in the film and Dan Hartman in reality, which peaked at number six on Billboard’s Hot 100 and got extensive play on MTV.)

Having dabbled in YA fantasy (The School For Good And Evil) and Wham!-based Christmas movies (Last Christmas) in recent years, director Paul Feig is getting back into his Spy and The Heat action-comedy groove with high concept Prime Video movie Jackpot! A sort of The Purge-meets-Euromillions-rollover caper set in very-near-future Los Angeles, this one sees Awkwafina's struggling actor Katie reluctantly teaming up with John Cena's amateur lotto heavy Noel when she unwittingly hits the jackpot, only to learn that California state rules allow anybody to kill the lottery winner before sundown without consequence. If it sounds a bit zany, then it looks even zanier. Check out the wackadoodle trailer below;
See? Crackers! We don't know if it's the 'Holding Out For A Hero' needledrop, John Cena's whip cracking skills, or the Peacemaker star and Awkwafina's classic opposite-sides-of-the-tracks mismatched buddy bants that's doing it for us, but from...

"Katie's the biggest jackpot of all time. Just find her!" Prime Video has debuted the trailer for a goofy dark comedy called Jackpot!, the latest movie from comedy filmmaker Paul Feig. Set in a near future where a killer lottery has been created in economically struggling California. This has one of the ultimate concepts that acts as a metaphor for America: in the near future, a "Grand Lottery" has been newly established in California - the catch: anyone can kill the winner before sundown to legally claim their multi-billion dollar jackpot. So it's kind of like The Purge mashed up with Lottery Ticket? "You can't win if you don't play." Feig's Jackpot! stars Awkwafina and John Cena, along with appearances by Mgk, Simu Liu, Ayden Mayeri, Seann William Scott, Dolly de Leon, Donald Elise Watkins, and Sam Asghari. This definitely looks like a streaming comedy – a cheesy fight movie with...

The surprise success of Ghostbusters: Afterlife breathed new life into a moribund franchise, giving us a new generation of supernatural sleuths to cheer for. It was very touching to see the original quartet suit up one more time and kick ghostly ass. But, it was clear the torch was being passed to Egon Spengler’s daughter, Callie) Carrie Coon, and her children Trevor (Finn Wolfhard) and Phoebe (Mckenna Grace), along with their science teacher Gary Gooberson (Paul Rudd). With her inheritance of the original Ghostbusters HQ, the stage was set.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire is the result, and the film, out now on streaming and disc, is a hodge-podge of characters, concepts, and conundrums that are so filled with characters the emotional undercurrents are given the shortest of shrift.

What kind of music goes best with comedy? Even if you’ve never seen The Benny Hill Show, you know its silly, sped-up theme song. For years, funny movies would incorporate swinging jazz or playful orchestral tunes. Then, in the late 1970s, John Landis had the idea to tap acclaimed Oscar-winning composer (and friend) Elmer Bernstein to write a no-winking serious score for Landis’ outrageous Animal House. The juxtaposition worked perfectly, the onscreen hijinks accentuated by Bernstein’s soaring strings — almost as if the movie was pretending to be classy while the characters were thumbing their nose at the pomposity. Soon, other movies, like Airplane! (also scored by Bernstein), were doing the same thing, proving that what initially seemed like a bizarre notion for music in a comedy could actually be brilliant.
But times change, and one trend gets replaced by a new one. By the mid-1980s, several hit comedies contained a hit single.

Comedy is an art form that to truly succeed requires mastery of both subtlety and audacity, and a keen sense of timing. But usually two out of three is enough to pull some chuckles from an audience, and so a veneer of comedy finds its way into a lot of genres besides its own. And a little like how science fiction comments on our current era, comedy also tends to highlight current storytelling trends and topics, making it a natural companion to the speculative genre.
Unlike how Airplane killed the disaster movie in the ’70s by brutally skewering every trope that that genre relied on, comedy’s place in science fiction is often evolutionary and frequently affectionate. Something about this blend simply enhances the way sci-fi comments on us as a species. Call it symbiotic—a raucous relationship similar to Eddie Brock and Venom’s bonkers movie marriage. But don’t call it Shirley.

Actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd has had a long and steady career ever since he first began doing improvisational comedy with the famed Second City troupe in both their Chicago and Toronto theaters.
Fame came to Aykoyd when he was hired for what seemed like a low expectations comedy/variety show NBC was beginning for late Saturday evenings. “Saturday Night Live” became a bit of a phenomenon launching all the original “Not Ready for Prime Time Players” (as the cast was called) into stardom. Aykroyd along with Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris suddenly found themselves among the most talked about television stars working in the business.
Aykroyd and Belushi became especially close friends during the series run and began working in films together such as “Neighbors,” “The Blues Brothers” and potentially “Ghostbusters,” but Belushi’s overdose at the age of 33 caused Bill Murray...

Aykroyd along with Chevy Chase, John Belushi, Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Laraine Newman and Garrett Morris suddenly found themselves among the most talked about television stars working in the business.

Columbia Pictures never wanted to make Ghostbusters. Well, to put a finer point on it, those who technically ran the studio out of New York City (then as a Coca-Cola subsidiary) wanted no part in the catching ghost business—so much so that lawyers got involved. But by the time the Manhattan executives heard about the project, the Columbia Pictures chairman out in actual Hollywood, Frank Price, had already greenlit the movie and put a seeming target on his back.
Such was the opinion of “high-concept” and special effects-driven comedies in the early 1980s.
Released 40 years ago this month, Ghostbusters has obviously outlived those early doubts. It’s a pop culture touchstone with the same kind of tenacity Slimer displays at a wedding reception buffet. There’s always room for more bustin’, whether it be by way of loving tributes to this classic of 1980s comedy, or through new attempts to expand the brand.

The discovery of an old relic sets free the vengeful spirit of Garraka, who threatens to freeze everyone to death. Ghostbusters new and old must join forces to protect their city and save the world from a second Ice Age.
Guests can venture through Ray’s Occult Books shop, the Ghostbusters’ new high-tech lab and containment facility and the dank New York City sewer system.

A couple months ago, and thirty-nine years after they made the vampire classic Fright Night (watch it Here) together, several members of the film’s cast reunited with writer/director Tom Holland (and were joined by special guests Mark Hamill and Rosario Dawson) for a live reading of the script that will be released as episodes of the podcast Table Read – and in fact, the first part of that reading has already been released. You can find it by clicking over to the Table Read website. A member of the ComicBook.com staff was in attendance at the live reading, and had the chance to talk to Holland and Chris Sarandon, who played the vampire Jerry Dandridge in the film. During the conversation, Sarandon mentioned that he almost passed on Fright Night as soon as he saw the title!

Stars: Paul Rudd, Carrie Coon, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Kumail Nanjiani, Patton Oswalt, Celeste O’Connor, Logan Kim, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, William Atherton, James Acaster | Written by Gil Kenan, Jason Reitman | Directed by Gil Kenan
The Ghostbusters are back in New York for the second instalment of the sequel-slash-reboot series, following 2021’s Ghostbusters: Afterlife. This time round, it’s directed by Gil Kenan, who co-wrote both Afterlife and Frozen Empire with Jason Reitman. Effectively energised by the New York setting, the sequel has evidently learned from the disastrous mistakes of the previous film and emerges as an entertaining adventure in its own right, though it’s not entirely without problems.

At the beginning of Irvin Kershner's 1980 sci-fi flick "Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back," Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) is attacked by vicious yeti while patrolling the frozen wastelands of the planet Hoth. The yeti, called a wampa, carries Luke back to its lair, where it feasts on the bones of some other mysterious prey. Luke's feet are frozen to the ceiling, and he remains injured and dangling, unable to defend himself. Luckily, Luke brought a lightsaber with him, and he's able to use it to free himself and slay the yeti. It's a pity that the makers of "The Empire Strikes Back" didn't think to include a scene wherein the space yeti fought Chewbacca, a space sasquatch.
In the original (and now unavailable) cuts of "Empire Strikes Back," the wampa was barely seen, achieved only through a clumsy costume and clever editing that left the bulk of its massive body obscured.

The "Ghostbusters" franchise has been kicking around since 1984, thanks to director Ivan Reitman and the comedic bona fides of primary cast members Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and Harold Ramis (who also co-wrote the script), with a little help from Ernie Hudson as the blue collar guy who makes it easy for things to be explained to the audience. But the film series lay dormant for nearly 20 years, until Sony Pictures attempted to reboot the entire franchise from scratch in 2016 with Paul Feig's new "Ghostbusters," which would go on to get the subtitle "Answer the Call." More recently, "Ghostbusters" has been given new life, thanks to the nostalgic legacy-quel "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" and a new narrative thread following the once-estranged family of the late Egon Spengler.

Dracula, Wolf Man, Bride of Frankenstein, Invisible Man and the Creature from the Black Lagoon are set to descend on Universal Orlando Resort’s Epic Universe as part of its new Dark Universe.
Teased earlier this year, the land is home to “Darkmoor,” a ravaged village where some of the horror genre’s earliest, most recognizable and beloved creatures — along with a few new character additions — will appear throughout two new attractions, monster makeup and character meet-and-greet experiences, and more. Designed by the Universal Creative team in partnership with Universal Pictures, the Epic Universe land promises a mix of boundary-pushing intensity and family-friendly fun.
The central attraction, Monsters Unchained: The Frankenstein Experiment, takes park goers into the catacombs of Frankenstein Manor — the land’s towering focal point — where they’ll witness Dr. Victoria Frankenstein’s twisted lab experiments go awry. Fulfilling a decades-old prophecy — and by prophecy, I mean a throwaway joke that was clearly never meant to be taken seriously — Mel Brooks’ Spaceballs is finally getting a sequel. Whether or not it’s actually going to be called Spaceballs II: The Search for More Money remains to be seen.
Last week, Josh Gad posted images of a heavily-redacted screenplay on Instagram, indicating that he was working on a mystery movie that would be “Based on Characters Created by Mel” somebody, and opens with the scene heading “Ext. Star Field.” Fans quickly deduced that Gad’s script was for a sequel to Spaceballs. It was either that or a Passion of the Christ spin-off set in the distant future.
It’s now been officially confirmed that a Spaceballs follow-up is in development at Amazon MGM. The belated continuation of the 1987 Star Wars spoof will star Gad, who also co-wrote the script.

Well, it's happened again. A high-profile franchise project starring women, members of the Lgbtqia community, and/or Poc has been review-bombed by audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with the most vocally intolerant corners of a sprawling fandom making their voices heard loud and clear.
"Star Wars: The Acolyte" is the latest project on the receiving end of this tactic, with the show's audience score having fallen to 14% as of this writing. At this point, as only the fifth sentence of this article begins to unspool, I imagine a lot of fans are already bracing themselves, ready and waiting to wade into a discussion that's been happening in some form or fashion for a decade at this point. "Hey," they'll say, "I just genuinely think this show/movie sucks, Ok? Don't lump me in with racists and misogynists who go out of their way to give projects like this one star just for the lolz.

Jake Gyllenhaal is an attorney accused of murder in the Apple TV+ limited series “Presumed Innocent,” which is based on the Scott Turow novel.
Here’s who plays who in the rest of the cast and where you might have seen the cast before. Where appropriate, we’ve also listed who played the character in the 1990 movie that starred Harrison Ford, but not all the characters in the series line up with those in the movie.

If you’ve been trying to place the very specific voice that O-t Fagbenle is using as Da Nico Della Guardia on Apple TV+’s Presumed Innocent, be forewarned that we are about to make you hear nothing else but a certain fussy Epa inspector.
When TVLine spoke with Fagbenle ahead of Presumed Innocent‘s June 12 premiere (with its first two episodes of eight), we simply had to ask what inspired the accent and affectations he chose for Nico, one of murder suspect Rusty Sabich’s two main adversaries.

Sony Pictures Entertainment has acquired Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, the theater chain that inspired a passionate following with its creative cocktails, extensive food menu and strict “no talking, no texting” policies. The media company acquired Alamo Drafthouse from owners Altamont Capital Partners, Fortress Investment Group and its founder Tim League.
Under its new ownership, Alamo Drafthouse will be managed under a newly established division, Sony Pictures Experiences. In a press release touting the sale, the company said it “reinforces [Sony Pictures Entertainment’s] long-held commitment to theatrical exhibition and continued initiatives in experiential entertainment.” Alamo has been quietly soliciting offers for the past several months, but had struggled to find a buyer.
Alamo Drafthouse’s Michael Kustermann will remain CEO of the pioneering dine-in movie theater chain and head Sony Pictures Experiences, reporting to Ravi Ahuja, president and COO of Sony Pictures Entertainment. All 35 of the chain’s cinemas will operate under the Alamo Drafthouse brand.

The 1984 summer movie season was a defining moment in the film industry, with a flurry of releases setting the stage for how box office performance could influence the success of a film. The opening weekend of “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” saw a massive $25 million intake, while “Star Trek III: The Search for Spock” followed close behind with $17 million. Studios did not shy away from competition, showing their faith in diverse offerings. An Unforgettable Competition In this competitive landscape, Columbia Pictures introduced their own contenders by releasing “Ghostbusters” and “Gremlins.” These films faced off against...

The 1984 summer movie season kicked off in May and early June with a flurry of blockbusters. "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" opened to a gargantuan $25 million over Memorial Day weekend, and, unconcerned about getting chopped up in the mega-sequel's wake, Paramount scored a $17 million debut the following weekend with "Star Trek III: The Search for Spock." If you're thinking the studios might sit out a weekend while these films dominate the box office, Columbia and Warner Bros opted to throw a couple of haymakers over the June 8 three-day with, respectively, "Ghostbusters" and "Gremlins."
And then, on the fourth weekend of the summer movie season, Hollywood at last took a breather. With kids fresh out of school, the studios sat back and watched the aforementioned titles continue to flourish, while other pricey gambles (e.g. "Streets of Fire" and "Once Upon a Time in America") flopped.

Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire was just released and the results are pretty interesting. The opening of Frozen Empire saw an impressive $45 million domestically. That was 1 million more than 2021’s Afterlife. The curious part is that the Ghostbusters reboot starring Melissa McCarthy opened with $46 million. That film was lambasted by fans because of the all-female cast and made a poor box office of #229.1 million. That’s $25 million more than Afterlife, though the pandemic was still a valid excuse around this time as well. Frozen Empire can go on to be a massive hit that makes over $500 million...

There is a list of great many things on Tom Cruise’s daily planner that he needs to accomplish, preferably before sundown. One of those things does not include being insulted for his already heavily criticized movie – Mission: Impossible II – 24 years after its release. However, Carrie Coon missed the memo on the subject since it is only now that the actress has started binge-watching all of Ethan Hunt’s magnificent globe-trotting adventures.
Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One [Credit: Paramount Pictures]In the Mindhunter actress’s defense, Coon has been a very busy and well-versed actress herself. But given the niche genre that Tom Cruise’s movies appeal to – the action-hungry, adventure-loving audience – it never occurred to her to get acquainted with the spy franchise until very recently. After all, her co-worker and somewhat best friend Shea Wigham is in the final two installments of the IP.

Nowadays, terms like "cult film" are arguably thrown around a bit too often.
But back in 1998, it wasn't uncommon for a quirky flick like Practical Magic to fend off mixed reviews and unimpressive box office and go on to become a beloved cultural touchstone for future generations.
So it should come as no surprise that in this age of nostalgia, reboots, and reimaginings, a sequel to the Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman occult rom-com is currently in the works!
News of the sequel was revealed this morning via Warner Bros.' official Instagram page.
"It's official," the studio announced. "Practical Magic 2 is in development and coming soon."
According to Variety, Bullock and Kidman are not yet officially attached to the project but are in talks to resume their roles as the supernaturally gifted Owens sisters.

Saying Ghostbusters is a beloved pop-cultural franchise would be an understatement. Since the original Ivan Reitman-directed Ghostbusters premiered on June 8, 1984 —with an all-star comedic cast that includes Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Sigourney Weaver and Rick Moranis—the supernatural franchise has spawned sequels, reboots, and more. As the fantastical comedy reaches its 40th anniversary this weekend, it’s worth noting the legacy left behind. The team of eccentric parapsychologists turned ghost-catchers navigated existential threats after stumbling upon a gateway to another dimension in New York City. The celebration continues with screenings of these celebrated films. On Saturday,...

Theaters will live to fight another day. “Bad Boys: Ride or Die” (Sony) provided more than half of the gross this weekend, taking #1 with $56 million. That isn’t a record for the franchise (with previous films at lower ticket prices), but it is a critical victory for the industry at a time it desperately needs them.
Will Smith’s first wide release since his catastrophic Oscar behavior in 2022 represents a triumph for star power, franchise filmmaking, action titles, and titles that draw from minority audiences (over two thirds for the weekend were Black and Latino). Most of all, it was a vital sign that underperformance for highly touted summer films isn’t a given.
In the face of rising industry panic, an under-$40 million opening for “Ride or Die” (its 2020 predecessor opened to $62 million) could have ratched the doom and despair to toxic levels. Instead, it blew past tracking projections...

By 1984, films like “Jaws” (1975), “Star Wars” (1977) “Raiders of the Lost Ark” (1981) and “E.T.” (1982) had firmly established the summer blockbuster craze, with Steven Spielberg productions leading the way.
