That same day, Crunchyroll and Sony Entertainment announced that they had acquired ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Infinity Castle,’ which will debut exclusively in theaters worldwide (excluding select Asian territories including Japan) as an epic trilogy of films.
The three-part cinematic experience will be the final arc and culmination of the hugely popular award-winning anime shonen series, which follows Tanjiro, a kindhearted boy from the Taisho Period, who resolves to become a demon slayer after his family is destroyed by a powerful supernatural creature.
No official release date has been announced yet, but fans of the series can watch Seasons 1-3, plus the ‘Mugen Train’ and ‘Hashira Training Arc’ movies, streaming on Crunchyroll.

Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” — starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Jenna Ortega and Willem Dafoe — will open the upcoming Venice Film Festival.
Burton’s follow-up to his 1988 comedy-horror classic, in which Keaton returns as the foul-mouthed, shape-shifting ghoul, will world premiere out-of-competition on Aug. 28 at the Lido’s Palazzo del Cinema with talent in tow. The hotly anticipated new “Beetlejuice” chapter releases in the U.S. on Sept. 6 via Warner Bros. and will launch internationally starting Sept. 4.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” sees three generations of the Deetz clan move back into their Winter River home after a sudden death in the family. When Lydia’s (Ryder) rebellious teen daughter Astrid (Ortega) discovers a portal to the afterlife hidden in the basement, the name of the mischievous spirit Beetlejuice is inevitably repeated three times, inviting him to wreak havoc in the Deetz family home once again.

Daniel Brühl is getting back behind the camera to direct “Break,” a biopic about the tennis champion Gottfried von Cramm whose rise to stardom in the 1930s saw him face off with the Nazi regime in his native Germany.
“All Quiet on the Western” front star Felix Kammerer will lead the feature, which reunites the actor, Bruhl and the team behind the Oscar-winning WWI drama. “Break” is based on a screenplay by Hossein Amini from Marshall Jon Fisher’s “A Terrible Splendor: Three Extraordinary Men, a World Poised for War, and the Greatest Tennis Match Ever Played.”
The Ink Factory (“The Pigeon Tunnel,” “The Night Manager”) and their partners Marc Platt and Adam Siegel for Marc Platt Productions are teaming with Malte Grunert for Amusement Park (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) and Edward Berger (“All Quiet on the Western Front”) for Nine Hours on the picture, which will be told in German and English.

Danny and Michael Philippou, directors of last year’s breakout horror hit “Talk to Me,” have set up their second feature film “Bring Her Back” in their Adelaide, Australia, hometown.
The film has attracted financial support from the South Australia Film Corporation and is expected to start production “in summer.” The producers are Samantha Jennings and Kristina Ceyton of Causeway Films and the finished film will be distributed worldwide by A24.
“We love that we get to be in Adelaide to make our next film, we feel so at home here – it’s where we feel most comfortable and inspired, and we want to be making movies here for a long time,” said the twin brothers in a prepared statement. “Talk to Me” was filmed in Adelaide with funding from both the Safc and the Adelaide Film Festival.

Disney and Pixar’s latest set new records at the box office last weekend as ‘Inside Out 2’ became the fastest film to reach $1 billion in worldwide ticket sales, outperforming the original film’s $858 million tally in 2015. The animated sequel joins 53 other films to reach that milestone and surpassed 2022’s ‘Jurassic World Dominion’ and 2008’s ‘The Dark Knight’ with $1.01 billion in revenue.
See IMDb’s full list of billion dollar movies, based on data from BoxOfficeMojo.
In other box office news, ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ exceeded expectations in its opening weekend. The prequel to 2018’s ‘A Quiet Place’ finished with $53 million, the best opening weekend of the franchise. Meanwhile, Kevin Costner’s western epic ‘Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1’ opened to $11 million. The film’s disappointing start doesn’t bode well for the director’s planned four-film series, the second installment of which is scheduled to release in mid-August.

John Wick filmmaker Chad Stahelski is set to produce an English-language remake of the action thriller Kill for Roadside Attractions.
Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, who wrote and directed the 2023 Indian Hindi-language film, is on board for the same duties for the remake. The original Kill movie took place during a train trip to New Delhi, and saw a pair of commandos battle an army of bandits. It to get a U.S. release this weekend, starting July 4.
“Just when the stakes couldn’t get any higher, the train hurtles into chaos as a gang of 40 blade-wielding bandits storms in. Amrit and his friend employ their combat skills to protect the passengers. The train’s confines transform into a claustrophobic battleground, where martial arts meet mayhem,” the official synopsis from the producers states.
The Bollywood version of Kill is produced by Hiroo Yash Johar, Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta, Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain.

Lionsgate is going back to the early 1990s this summer, with help from Tyrese Gibson and Snoop Dogg.
The company announced Monday that it will release director Ariel Vromen’s crime thriller 1992 in theaters Aug. 30. Snoop Dogg has boarded the feature as executive producer through his Death Row Pictures production company, with Gibson (known for the Fast & Furious franchise) starring alongside Scott Eastwood and the late Ray Liotta in one of his final movie roles.
As seen in the trailer below, 1992 stars Gibson as Mercer, who is attempting to restart his life and patch things up with his son (Christopher Ammanuel) at the time of the Los Angeles uprising over the Rodney King verdict. Meanwhile, Mercer is about to encounter a father and son (Liotta and Eastwood) who are aiming to steal catalytic converters from the factory where Mercer works.
Vromen (The Iceman) directed the film from a screenplay he co-wrote with Sascha Penn.

Talk about a mood booster. Disney and Pixar’s emotion-laden “Inside Out 2” is the first film of the year to hit $1 billion at the global box office.
After 19 days of release, the animated sequel has grossed $469.3 million in North America and $545.5 million internationally for a worldwide tally of $1.015 billion. It’s one of 11 animated films to join the billion-dollar club (eight of which are Disney titles), and it’s the fastest animated release to do so.
When “Inside Out 2” opened in theaters on June 14, the film shattered expectations with $151 million domestically and overtook “Dune: Part 2” ($711 million) as the biggest opening of the year. It was also the first movie since last July’s “Barbie” ($162 million) to debut above $100 million. Since then, the second “Inside Out” has retained the top spot on box office charts for three consecutive weekends and became the highest-grossing movie domestically and globally of 2024. It’s wild to think about this now, especially as people are predicting massive opening weekend numbers for “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Still, there was a time, shortly after the Disney acquisition of Fox, when people thought the “Deadpool” franchise was dead. Thoughts about how Disney would want it to be PG-13 or wouldn’t want to inherit the universe that was created? Basically, people thought there might not be another ‘Deadpool’ film. And one of those people was none other than Ryan Reynolds.

Kevin Costner's long-awaited Western epic "Horizon: An American Saga -- Chapter 1" hit theaters this past weekend. This was a true passion project for the "Dances With Wolves" director, who put around $38 million of his own money, in addition to securing lots of other financing from mystery investors, to get the film made. It's the first in a planned four-film saga, with Warner Bros. set to release "Chapter 2" in mere weeks on August 16. Unfortunately, in the early going, this experiment has not panned out financially.
Opening against "A Quiet Place: Day One," the first installment in Costner's new franchise was buried. "Horizon" opened to a mere $11 million domestically, placing at number three on the charts for the weekend, scarcely above "Bad Boys: Ride or Die" ($10.3 million), which was in its fourth weekend of release. It certainly doesn't help that "Inside Out 2" has remained a juggernaut, passing $1 billion worldwide...

A playful take on the dishy celebrity cameo, John Cena’s part in “The Bear” is an acquired taste.
The legendary WWE champion — whose acting credits now include a top-line superhero in the DC Extended Universe — appears as Carmy’s beefy cousin Sammy Fak in Season 3, Episode 5, “Children.” The 6’ 1” supporting player arrives in the elite fine-dining epic created by Christopher Storer seemingly out of nowhere, but it’s really just the latest course in a string of smart casting choices that make up Cena’s quietly brilliant career.
“Anybody seen a ghost?” asks Sammy, his hulking frame filling the restaurant side-door.
It’s a jarring scene that has drawn cheers as well as criticism online. Some audiences are delighted to see Cena in their favorite TV show. By box office and general reputation, he’s a crowd favorite if there ever was one, even among non-wrestling fans. Others, however, have...

The late Christopher Reeve experienced his greatest commercial success playing Superman and his alter ego Clark Kent in the first four Superman movies. Now, his youngest son, journalist and ABC News correspondent Will Reeve, will make a cameo playing a TV reporter in the upcoming DC Studios movie.
The project is currently filming in Cleveland, Ohio, where local reporters (via Cleveland.com) captured all the behind-the-scenes action, including Reeve’s appearance on set during a major scene. Recasting happens all the time. Tragedy sometimes strikes, like in the case of Professor Albus Dumbledore in the "Harry Potter" series, where Michael Gambon assumed the role following the passing of the original performer, Richard Harris. Oftentimes, recasting is a result of scheduling conflicts, like when "May December" breakout star Charles Melton took over the role of Reggie Mantle on "Riverdale" due to original actor Ross Butler's scheduling conflicts with "13 Reasons Why." And sometimes a character is recast simply because they weren't right for the role, as was famously the case with Eric Stoltz, who was replaced by Michael J. Fox after six weeks of shooting "Back to the Future."
In all of these instances, fans were well aware of the recastings as they happened, but once a person has been playing a role long enough, audiences sometimes forget they were ever recast in the first place. This...

One of the biggest questions surrounding “Deadpool & Wolverine” isn’t about how popular the film is going to be—early forecasts show the film being massive—but instead about who is going to show up in the movie from the old era of 20th Century Fox and Marvel. Will Ben Affleck show up as Daredevil? Will Chris Evans appear as the Human Torch from the old “Fantastic Four” films?

“Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton,” “Bridgerton.” That’s what Netflix’s Top 10 Most Popular TV (English) list looks like now.
Season 3 of the Shondaland period drama has now entered the streamer’s all-time list at number 10, booting “Baby Reindeer” and joining “Bridgerton” Seasons 1 and 2 on the leaderboard.
“Bridgerton” is the only series with three seasons on Netflix’s top 10 all-time list. “Stranger Things” is well-represented with Seasons 3 and 4, but its first two seasons came out before Netflix began to share viewership statistics.
Like many of its biggest shows, Netflix split “Bridgerton” Season 3 into two parts. Part 1 debuted on May 16; Part 2 launched on June 13.
Netflix’s top 10 is based on number of views over a TV season or a film’s first 91 days of availability — both “Bridgerton” Season 3 halves still have plenty of time to rack up more views in pursuit of the preceding seasons. “Baby Reindeer” has just a few days left before Netflix’s self-imposed cutoff.

Financially speaking, the “Despicable Me” franchise is in fine form. Over the course of five feature films (with number six arriving this week), the Illumination Animation property has become (deep breath): the highest-grossing animated film franchise, the 15th highest-grossing film franchise of all time and, one of the highest-grossing media franchises of all time. These movies are bankable! And while we expect “Despicable Me 4” — the first new feature in the series in two years, but at this point, there’s far too many of them. Overstuffed with characters, storylines, and kid-friendly gags, Chris Renaud’s latest film makes a strong — if accidental — case that it’s high time we turn “Despicable Me” and “Minions” into, gasp, a TV series. “Despicable Me 4” already feels like six episodes of just such a show, crammed into a single unwieldy, disconnected, and oddly episodic outing.

Despite the pessimism around the decline in theater-going the first half of the year, there actually have been plenty of films that have been given enough of a platform to enter the Best Original Screenplay conversation, even at this early juncture.

“Amedspor” and “Lover, Not a Fighter” were among the winners at the awards for Eastern Promises, Karlovy Vary Film Festival’s industry section, on Tuesday.
The Works in Progress Visual Post-Production Award went to Turkish documentary “Amedspor,” directed by Rezan Yesilbas and produced by Ahmet Gurata. The film follows Amedspor, a minor soccer club from the Turkish second league, which came into the spotlight when it decided to reclaim its Kurdish identity.
The jury said it was “an important and enthralling look at the intersection of sports and politics in modern day Turkey as a minor league football team works to reclaim its identity despite the conflict and likely repercussions.” The jury added it was “an important reflection of the Turkish-Kurdish conflict, telling the story not in a direct political way but through football.”

Kevin Costner’s “Horizon” franchise got off to a dismal start at the box office, with the first of four-planned movies debuting to just $11 million at the domestic box office. Michael Rooker, the “Guardians of the Galaxy” favorite who stars in the Western epic as Sgt. Major Thomas Riordan, caught up with TMZ after the film’s lackluster opening weekend and urged moviegoers to quit TikTok and give “real cinema” a chance.
“It’s real cinema, folks. Be prepared. We ain’t used to that shit,” Rooker said. “We’re used to 90 minute movies. Everything is 90 minutes. Give me a break. Get over that shit. Let’s watch a movie that actually tells a story where you learn about the people and grow to like them or hate them. It’s not all fast and cut, cut cut.”

Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan has had an unusual history on screen. Alec Baldwin was the first actor to suit up as the CIA analyst, playing him in 1990's spectacular submarine thriller "The Hunt for Red October. That film would have theoretically served as the first of many Baldwin-as-Jack-Ryan films, but the actor was overshadowed by Sean Connery in that movie, and negotiations with Paramount Pictures for Baldwin to return in a sequel got so testy that the studio ultimately replaced him with Harrison Ford in 1992's "Patriot Games." For those who have never seen "Patriot Games," it's the type of movie where a guy sternly says "get me hostage rescue at Quantico, now!" into a phone. We're talking top-tier 1990s Dad Cinema, here.
In the summer of 1988, two years before "The Hunt for Red October" hit screens, Paramount had paid a reported $450,000 for the rights to author Tom Clancy...

Audrey Diwan is following up her Golden Lion win for “Happening” with an adaptation of Emmanuelle Arsan’s novel “Emmanuelle.”
The sensual thriller centers on a titular woman (Noémie Merlant) whose business trip to Hong Kong awakens an insatiability inside of her. Naomi Watts, Will Sharpe, “Stranger Things” breakout Jamie Campbell Bower, Anthony Wong, and Chacha Huang also co-star.
An official synopsis for the film reads: Emmanuelle is in search of a lost pleasure. She flies alone to Hong Kong, for a business trip. In this sensual world city, she multiplies experiences and meets Kei, a man who never ceases to elude her. Diwan’s film, freely adapted from Arsan’s novel, casts a female gaze on the intimate quest of the woman whose name still evokes one cinema’s most provocative characters.
“Emmanuelle” will open the San Sebastián Film Festival on September 20. The feature is distributed by Pathé.

China’s box office totalled $3.4bn (Rmb 23.9bn) in the first six months of 2024, down 9% year-on-year despite a strong start at Chinese New Year, according to consultancy Artisan Gateway.
Ticket sales from the first half of the year were also the lowest since 2016, according to additional figures from Maoyan Research Institute, a subsidiary of service provider Maoyan Entertainment. This excludes 2020 and 2022 when cinemas were closed for lengthy periods due to the Covid pandemic.
Artisan Gateway highlighted that cinema admissions dipped 8.9% year-on-year to 550 million, while the average ticket price stands at just over $6 (RMB43.4), which has remained relatively stable for the last three years.

Back when it was announced that “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” was getting released by what was then HBO Max, there were plenty of his fans upset that a theatrical release wasn’t planned. The filmmaker assured folks there would be an opportunity to see the film on the big screen. But nothing was ever announced. Well, it’s better to be late than not show up at all, right?
According to Zack Snyder, the Snyder Cut of “Justice League” will be available to see on the big screen… somehow.

Fox-owned ad-supported streaming platform Tubi is to launch in the UK bringing a 20,000-title content library to viewers.
The service commands around 80 million active monthly users in the US, where it is one of the major ad-supported players alongside Paramount’s Pluto TV and Amazon Freevee, which are both already in the UK.
Its expansion to the UK aims to combat the “homogenous” feel of traditional programming and tap into “diverse and vibrant fandoms”, according to David Salmon, executive vice-president and managing director of international at Tubi.

In the midst of a successful modeling career a decade ago, Abbey Lee’s chance to break into acting came with Mad Max Fury Road. That challenging shoot was the first of many she faced with relish. A scene-stealing role in The Neon Demon followed, then M. On this episode, she talks about letting the character find her, the importance of staying malleable, using everything that happens as fuel for […]

Stephen King movies have been a thing for nearly as long as the man has been writing best-selling novels. From "Carrie" the first feature film based on one of King's works, to the recent ill-fated remake of "Children of the Corn," these adaptations have run the gamut. King doesn't always throw his weight behind the projects and he famously was not a fan of Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining." But when King is a fan of a movie based on his work, he's happy to say so. That was the case with 2023's "The Boogeyman," a movie King vocally got behind. It turns out, the author's praise actually helped the cast and crew during production.
Director Rob Savage spoke with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the release of "The Boogeyman" last year and explained initially how he came to the project. Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, of "A Quiet Place" fame,...

Starring Paul Bettany, Kirsten Dunst and two Sugababes songs, Wimbledon shows the potential for love to transform a middling underdog into a champion
When the average punter considers tennis, they conjure the legends of the game: Serena Williams’ revolutionary power and style; Djokovic’s irreverent on-and-off court behaviour; and closer to home, Hewitt’s insistence on celebrating a winning point by miming a tête-à-tête between himself and a hand puppet.
Peter Colt – the bumbling protagonist of Richard Loncraine’s 2004 romcom Wimbledon, played by Paul Bettany – is no such household name. “For the better part of ’96”, he ranked eleventh in the world, but now he’s an unseeded, washed up 31-year-old struggling to accept his inevitable descent into obscurity. Before he reluctantly accepts a role as tennis director of a private club (full of lascivious older ladies), he’s set to play his last Wimbledon.

Sex, drugs, and investment banking. Must mean “Industry” is (finally) back.
In Season 3, Pierpoint & Co. turns toward ethical investing, but probably not for the ethics. Yasmin (Marisa Abela), Robert (Harry Lawtey), and Eric (Ken Leung) are tasked with taking green-tech energy company Lumi, led by Sir Henry Muck (Kit Harington), to the public markets. But before it can IPO, questions about the company’s finances reach the media, and Sir Henry’s pleasant-appearing disposition is overtaken by a much darker personality. Still, there’s nothing like some shirtless handball to blow off some steam.
Meanwhile, Harper (Myha’la) is no longer with Pierpoint, but she’s not out of the game yet. In a lengthy teaser released Tuesday by HBO, it looks like her and Eric may have another go at this whole finance thing. But first, he and Robert have to do some primal screaming.

On Feb. 6, 2023, after a devastating 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the Turkish-Syrian border, becoming the deadliest disaster in the region’s modern history, Syrian director Waad Al-Kateab was in London fretting about her family and friends, and feeling helpless.
The activist and helmer of “For Sama” – the Oscar-nominated civil war diary that traveled around the world – was unable to reach the stricken area, having fled the Bashar Assad regime. But she immediately reached out to people on the ground, including her friends Fadi Al Halabi, a cinematographer on Oscar-winning short “The White Helmets,” and Fuad Sayed Issa, founder of Syrian refugee-led humanitarian group Violet.
Shortly thereafter Al-Kateab got a call from prominent producer Sheila Nevins. This led to her directing “Death Without Mercy” the powerful observational doc from MTV Documentary Films that premiered at Sheffield DocFest in June. “The Crow” director Rupert Sanders says his reimagining 1994 cult-classic film starring the late Brandon Lee is a “very scrappy indie movie,” despite its $50-million budget and Lionsgate backing.
“There’s nothing to do with Hollywood in this movie at all,” Sanders told Empire magazine of his remake (and it’s most definitely a remake). “It’s a very scrappy indie movie.”
Sanders said his screenwriters Zach Baylin and William Schneider were “able to remain close to the center and the darkness and the violence that’s in the graphic novel” more so than the original film.
He added, “The only reason we could do that is because it’s not a studio movie.”
“The Crow” centers on soulmates Eric (Skarsgård) and Shelly (FKA Twigs) who are brutally murdered when the demons of her dark past catch up with them, the synopsis states. Given the chance to save his true love by sacrificing himself,...

The Venice Film Festival has, for years now, been the place for big studio films to have their world premiere. It’s not a surprise to see a star-studded, American blockbuster get the special treatment there. That’s why it’s only mildly surprising that we now know that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” will celebrate its world premiere at Venice.

A trend that arose in Hollywood during the 2010s was the "legacy sequel," which has led to some not-so great results. A legacy sequel is a sequel made long after the previous film that acknowledges the passage of that time. If old characters/actors return, they'll have aged into a mentor for younger leads who fill the character archetypes of the original film.
In his 2019 New York Times Op-ed, "I Said Marvel Movies Aren't Cinema. Let Me Explain," director Martin Scorsese said the films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe "are sequels in name but they are remakes in spirit." So are legacy sequels.
Some of the last decade's legacy sequels include "Terminator: Dark Fate," David Gordon Green's "Halloween" trilogy and subsequent "The Exorcist: Believer," and the one that really kicked off this trend, 2015's "Star Wars: Episode VII -- The Force Awakens." By now, director J.J. Abrams has long...

The “Emmanuelle” film franchise is one of the most famous in film history. Beginning in 1974, the film series followed the title character as she experienced various erotic encounters. And after a trilogy of films, studios from around the world started to make their own “Emmanuelle” knockoff films, slightly altering the title to avoid copyright issues. (Who can remember “Emmanuelle in Space?”) But that said, there has never been an “Emmanuelle” film quite like the new one that is being released this year.

Lindsay Lohan recently told ABC’s “Nightline” that returning to the Disney lot to film “Freaky Friday 2” has her feeling like a little kid again as it’s the place where she filmed not only the original “Freaky Friday” but also some of her biggest hits, like her breakthrough role in 1998’s “The Parent Trap.” Lohan stayed in the Disney family in the years that followed with films such as “Life-Size” (2000), “Get a Clue” (2002) and more.
“I think really for me was when I went onto the Disney lot,” Lohan said. “And being back on the Disney lot because that’s not just ‘Freaky Friday’ for me. That’s ‘The Parent Trap,’ that’s ‘Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen,’ that’s ‘Herbie.’ It’s so many moments for me. So when I got there, I kind of felt like this essence of a little kid again.”

Despite what the Russo Brothers may think, it is not the children who are killing the Marvel Cinematic Universe. There is a clear, tangible decrease of interest in superhero movies that has been happening over the past couple of years as the Infinity Saga ended and the Multiverse Saga stumbled out of the gate (and continues to do so)
Hopefully, the new Disney mandate to release fewer movies and shows in the future will bring back the sense of wonder and awe that characterized early Marvel movies and made them must-watch events. Particularly of note here is the TV shows. Sure, the Disney+ TV era of Marvel Studios has given us some truly fantastic gems of superhero storytelling that weren't possible even just a few years ago, like the weird and twisty world of "Loki," but also giving smaller characters a chance to break out in a big way on the smaller screen,...
