Damian Mc Carthy's "Oddity" has a killer opening scene — the type of memorable beginning that lets you know you're in for something special. Evening is descending on a sprawling, remote house somewhere in the Irish countryside. Dani (Carolyn Bracken), who is fixing up the house, briefly speaks on the phone with her husband Ted (Gwilym Lee), who is stuck at the asylum where he works. Dani will be spending the night in the big, empty house all alone, and that doesn't seem to bother her. At least at first. Then, night sets in. Dani can't find her phone. She heads outside to check her car but comes up empty and returns to the house, closing and locking the door behind her.
And then there's a loud knock. Looking through a square porthole in the door, Dani sees an unkempt man with a distinct white glass eye. The man (Tadhg Murphy...

With Caveat, Damian McCarthy layered mystery upon mystery to create a haunting thriller about isolation. The Irish filmmaker’s latest, Oddity, follows a similarly twist-laden blueprint. The plot exudes a pulpy sense of escalation, defined by a collision of convoluted story threads that might, in lesser hands, have devolved into unintentional comedy.
After all, the central image of Oddity verges on the ludicrous: a horrible wooden mannequin planted at the head of a dinner table, mouth frozen in a silent scream. The ornament belongs to Darcy (Carolyn Bracken), the blind, silver-haired twin sister of Dani (also Bracken), who was murdered while renovating the very house that Darcy visits not long into the film. The apparent culprit was a mental patient, Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy), recently discharged from the asylum where Dani’s husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee), is a doctor. Ted wasn’t home during the incident, but he has since...

If you wanted to see what Tom Hanks and Robin Wright looked like about, say, 30 years ago in a film directed by Robert Zemeckis, there would, of course, be an obvious movie to watch: Forest Gump. But if that somehow wasn’t enough, Zemeckis has fired up the de-aging technology for his next project, Here, which primarily centers around the life of a couple played by Hanks and Wright.

With Here, Robert Zemeckis yet again takes audiences on a journey through time, with the core leads from Forrest Gump — Tom Hanks and Robin Wright — in tow. Plus, he’s using advanced special effects technology for de-aging for the cast. And now, thanks to Sony Pictures, we’ve got our first look at this buzzy flick in the trailer, which is embedded above!
Scripted by Forrest Gump screenwriter Eric Roth and based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name, Here takes place across a century in a single location: a home that is, over time, inhabited by the likes of a couple at the turn of the 20th century (Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee), an inventor and a pin-up model during the 1920s (David Fynn and Ophelia Lovibond), baby boomer Richard and the love of his life, Margaret (Hanks and Wright), and Richard’s parents, Al (Paul Bettany...

In a highly anticipated reunion, Tom Hanks and Robin Wright are set to star in “Here,” a innovative new drama directed by Robert Zemeckis and written by Eric Roth. This project marks the first time the quartet has worked together since their 1994 Oscar-winning film “Forrest Gump.”
“Here,” based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel, promises to push the boundaries of filmmaking with its unique concept. The entire 104-minute film will be shot from a single, fixed camera position in one living room, chronicling the lives of its inhabitants over a century.
Zemeckis, known for his groundbreaking visual effects work, told Vanity Fair, “The single perspective never changes, but everything around it does. It’s actually never been done before.” He emphasized that while the technical aspects are innovative, the film’s core strength lies in its performances and character arcs.

Sony Pictures has released the trailer for Robert Zemeckis’ “Here,” which is the sixth collaboration between the “Forrest Gump” director and his leading man Tom Hanks.
Based on the graphic novel by Richard McGuire, “Here” tells the century-long story of a single house and all the different people who lived there. The camera sits at a fixed angle for the entire 104-minute duration without moving. In another “Forrest Gump” reunion, the film’s main couple is played by Hanks and Robin Wright. The movie’s script is written by Zemeckis and “Forrest Gump” scribe Eric Roth.
Hanks leads as Vietnam-generation teen Richard, while Wright plays his girlfriend and eventual wife Margaret. Through makeup and de-aging technology, the pair starts the film as teenagers and are well into their 80s by the end. Starring alongside them are Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly as Richard’s parents, Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee...

Sony Pictures have released several images featuring a de-aged Tom Hanks and Robyn Wright in the Robert Zemeckis feature ‘Here.’
Based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name, the film plays out within a single location – the camera never moving from a fixed position inside a home over the entire 104-minute runtime.
It tells the stories of the family who made a home there including the central couple played by Hanks and Wright.
The movie reunites Hanks and Wright with ‘Forrest Gump’ filmmaker Zemeckis and scribe Eric Roth. It also stars Paul Bettany and Kelly Reilly as the parents of Hanks’ character, David Flynn as an inventor and Ophelia Lovibond as a pin-up model both during the 1920s, and Michelle Dockery and Gwilym Lee as a couple at the turn of the 20th century.
The movie will be released in U.S. cinemas on November 25th.

Tom Hanks and Robin Wright appear decades younger in first-look photos from “Here,” their highly-anticipated reunion with “Forrest Gump” director Robert Zemeckis. The movie was even co-written by Zemeckis and “Forrest Gump” scribe Eric Roth.
Based on Richard McGuire’s 2014 graphic novel of the same name, “Here” takes place across a century in a single location. The camera never moves from a fixed position inside a home for the entire 104-minute runtime, as the viewers are treated to the stories of the people who made a home there. The central couple is played by Hanks and Wright.
“The single perspective never changes, but everything around it does,” Zemeckis recently told Vanity Fair about the ambitious storytelling conceit. “It’s actually never been done before. There are similar scenes in very early silent movies, before the language of montage was invented. But other than that, yeah, it was a risky venture.

Filming Underway On New Alan Partridge BBC Series
Filming is underway on new Alan Partridge mockumentary And Did Those Feet. Deadline revealed the BBC series several months back and cameras have rolled on the latest Steve Coogan conception. The mockumentary follows the beloved comedy creation settling into life back in his Norfolk home after a year working in Saudi Arabia, but the adjustment has left him with a deep sense of unease. Over six episodes he will unpack what is missing in his life, explore why the nation is in such a funk and find out what it might take to keep a person funk-free. “This look into the state of the nation (and Alan’s own psyche) through a unique lens – that of Alan Partridge – promises to further bolster the already iconic repertoire of the most legendary comedy character in the UK,” said BBC comedy boss Jon Petrie. In the first minutes of “Oddity,” a woman is faced with an impossible choice. She is home alone while her doctor husband works the night shift at a psychiatric hospital. A strange man missing an eye shows up at her door. He claims not to be a threat and informs the resident that someone else, who is trying to hurt her, is already inside the large and isolated home. Should she open the door for this figure or ignore his warning? The nerve-racking scenario takes hold of one’s anxieties and sets the tone for an unsettling ride, which IFC will release theatrically before the film streams on Shudder.

With the 2024 Overlook Film Festival now officially in the rearview mirror, the annual New Orleans celebration of all things horror has announced the winners of its audience and jury awards.
The festival’s top prize, the Audience Award for Feature Film, went to “Oddity,” Damian Mc Carthy’s home invasion horror flick that was a breakout from the SXSW 2024 midnight lineup.
“’Oddity’ delivers a brilliant, bespoke, and tightly entertaining string of ideas that work stronger as a collection — with even these missteps feeling like they branch from a unified center,” IndieWire’s Alison Foreman wrote in her Overlook review of the film. “Similar to Mc Carthy’s earlier ‘Caveat,’ this 98-minute treat demands to be reassessed a second time. Thank the wooden boy it’s coming to streaming: a triumphant addition to the director’s growing filmography and a standout in Shudder’s carousel of kick-ass ghost stories.”

Their first on-screen romance came in 2019 feature Top End Wedding, and now Miranda Tapsell and Gwilym Lee are getting in the loving mood for a Prime Video Australia series.
The pair are reprising their roles from the local box office hit in Top End Bub, with Tapsell and Top End Wedding co-writer Joshua Tyler penning the scripts. Christian van Vuuren and Shari Sebbens are directing.
Top End Bub will revisit Lauren (Tapsell), a dynamic Indigenous lawyer ticking off life goals in Adelaide, and her baker husband Ned (Lee), who abandon city life for the Top End (where the outback meets the tropics) to raise Lauren’s recently-orphaned eight-year-old niece.
While Lauren and Ned juggle the responsibility of becoming unexpected parents and try to keep their marriage together, Lauren must come to terms with her responsibilities within her culture, as she transforms from an individualist to the linchpin of her family,...

From pressed pennies to serial killer trophies, collections come in all shapes and sizes. Special assortments do not have to be uniform, nor does their common trait need to be immediately apparent. Just take the menagerie of artifacts in the basement from “Cabin in the Woods” or the museum of haunted items central to “The Conjuring” series. In fact, some of the best collections are really puzzles holding the solutions to even more arcane mysteries.
Such is the case with “Oddity,” writer/director Damian Mc Carthy’s second feature film, which premiered at SXSW as part of festival’s midnight lineup on March 8. Featuring a steely blind psychic (Carolyn Bracken) as its supernatural star and a menacing wooden mannequin as its scary centerpiece, this mostly single-location thriller is made in an almost-but-not-quite vaudevillian style that feels spiritually akin to “Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities.” It’s a richly...

Damian McCarthy sure does love a creepy antique. If you don’t recall the director’s previous effort Caveat, you at least remember the film’s desiccated stuffed bunny which featured heavily in its plot about sick family secrets hiding within the bones of a remote Irish house. McCarthy scales-up the prop-fetishism (and scares!) in Oddity, which centers around a terrifying human-size wooden effigy that may hold the key to righting a wrong committed against an innocent women.
Carolyn Bracken (You Are Not My Mother) stars as Dani, who answers the door one night and is greeted by a mysterious man named Olin Boole (Tadhg Murphy) who claims that she has an intruder in her home. Initially skeptical, she decides to let the man in before the film leaps forward. A while later, Boole has died after taking the fall for Dani’s murder and her doctor husband Ted (Gwilym Lee...

Writer/Director Damian Mc Carthy‘s sophomore effort, Oddity, serves as a welcome extension of his feature debut, Caveat, in many ways. Aside from the brief return of at least one familiar face and a nightmare bunny, Oddity continues the filmmaker’s exploration of supernatural karma and retribution with offbeat characters and a unique vision for scares. Armed with a tighter narrative, a lighter tone, and a creepy mannequin, Mc Carthy further establishes his horror style.
Oddity begins with an intense scenario that sees a woman, Dani (You Are Not My Mother’s Carolyn Bracken), forced to decide whether to trust the desperate stranger at her door, insisting someone snuck into her empty, rural house when she wasn’t looking. Dani’s ultimate decision sets up the overarching mystery. A quick time jump ahead reveals that Dani was murdered that fateful night and that her husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee), is...

The world’s creepiest mannequin holds the secret behind a shocking death in Damian McCarthy’s Oddity. Dani (Carolyn Bracken) is struggling to restore an old estate inherited by her busy doctor husband, Ted (Gwilym Lee). When a mysterious and violent death befalls her as she’s alone in the house one night, it’s up to her blind medium twin sister, Darcy (also Bracken) to solve the case. However, Darcy won’t be working alone, there’s also a sinister mannequin in the mix, that seems to be more than meets the eye. After Dani’s death, Ted moves along a bit too quickly with his paramour Yana (Caroline Menton), with whom he’d worked at the hospital. It all seems a bit fishy but no one can make the pieces fit,...

“A revenge ghost story with elements of a monster movie” is how Irish helmer Damian McCarthy describes his latest chiller, which is set to bring “plenty of scares and a few a few laughs” to SXSW’s late-night line-up. A supernatural horror centered around spooky trinkets, Oddity follows a blind medium (You Are Not My Mother’s Carolyn Bracken) as she uncovers the truth behind her twin sister’s death with the help of a terrifying wooden mannequin.
“She collects a lot of haunted items—she can pick up an object and tell you everything about it,” explains McCarthy, the writer/director of 2020’s psychological thriller Caveat and celebrated horror short He Dies at the End. Not only does one of these objects—the aforementioned “wooden man”—help her to catch her sister’s killer,...

Elle Fanning is opening up about Hulu’s cancellation of The Great and imagining what her character would be doing next.
The streamer axed the Tony McNamara-created series after three seasons. News of the cancellation came in the middle of the SAG-AFTRA strike which kept actors from sharing their thoughts. With the actors back in business, Fanning is now sharing her thoughts on social media.
“Scrolling down memory lane… I haven’t been able to properly share my thoughts after the news of The Great’s cancellation. This show has meant the world to me,” Fanning said on Instagram. “The experiences shared. The memories I’ll never forget. Tony McNamara is a certified genius. The last 3 seasons have shaped me. Through playing Catherine I discovered parts of myself I didn’t know I had. I love every crew member and cast member deeply.”

Well, this will go down as one of the most shocking cancellations ever.
Hulu has canceled the Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult comedy The Great after three seasons.
The sad news was first reported by Deadline.
Created, written, and executive produced by Tony McNamara, The Great followed Catherine The Great's story as "an idealistic, romantic young girl, who arrives in Russia for an arranged marriage to the mercurial Emperor Peter," according to the official description.
"Hoping for love and sunshine, she finds instead a dangerous, depraved, backward world that she resolves to change."
"All she has to do is kill her husband, beat the church, baffle the military and get the court onside."
News of the cancellation comes over three months on from the premiere of The Great Season 3, which unspooled all episodes on May 12.

No Huzzahs will be had today. In something of a surprise, Hulu has canceled “The Great,” the period comedy series from creator Tony McNamara that starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult, IndieWire has confirmed.
The series will end after airing three seasons, with the most recent season dropping back on May 12. The show is nominated for an Emmy this year after landing acting nominations for both Fanning and Hoult in its standout second season. It’s been nominated for seven Emmys in all. The show had also been nominated for several Golden Globes, Film Independent Spirit Awards, WGA and SAG Awards, and Critics Choice Awards.
Hulu had no comment.
It’s unclear whether the show’s cancellation is related to the ongoing writers and actors strike, which has resulted in several shows being un-renewed of late, or other factors.

Hulu has canceled its period dramedy The Great after three seasons.
The news comes some three-and-a-half months after the show’s third (and now final) season premiered as a binge release in May. The series stars Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult and explores the relationship of Russian Empress Catherine II and Emperor Peter III in the 18th century.
The show earned seven Emmy nominations over the course of its run, winning the award for outstanding period costumes last year. Fanning and Hoult also earned acting nominations in 2022, and series creator Tony McNamara and director Matt Shakman scored writing and directing nods for the series’ premiere episode in 2020.
The Great was also a critical favorite, earning nearly universally positive reviews across all three of its seasons. How many people watched it, however, remains a mystery as Hulu (like most other streamers) doesn’t share much viewing data and season three did...

“The Great” will not return for a fourth season at Hulu. The streaming service canceled the period drama after three critically acclaimed seasons.
The series was created, written and executive produced by “The Favourite” screenwriter Tony McNamara, and it starred Elle Fanning and Nicholas Hoult in a kooky tale about the life of Russian empress Catherine the Great.
The third season, which dropped all episodes on May 12, followed Catherine (Fanning) and her husband Peter (Hoult) as they worked on their relationship following her staged coup to take control of Russia. Thankfully, the Season 3 finale provided some closure to Catherine’s story, as it featured her growing into her role as leader while grieving a major loss.
The reasons for the cancellation are unclear, given the show’s garnered strong fan response as well as seven Emmy nominations since debuting in 2020. The drama won the Emmy for Outstanding Period Costumes in...

Exclusive: Ok, this one hurts. Hulu has canceled fan favorite The Great after three seasons.

Altogether, now… Huzzah! The Great is back on our screens this week for a third season of raunchy comedy and political machinations, all set in the lavish court of Russian empress, Catherine The Great.
After season two’s cliffhanger ending, Catherine (Elle Fanning) and Peter (Nicholas Hoult) are trying to make their marriage work. The fact that Peter’s now First Husband to her reign doesn’t help, despite his efforts to keep himself busy by looking after their young son and getting involved in culinary ventures.
Among the returning faces from the first two seasons are Adam Godley, as “Archie”, the conflicted leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, and Charity Wakefield as Georgina, who is simultaneously Peter’s mistress and Catherine’s close confidante. They both told us about playing two of the biggest schemers in the show and Charity described how filming in a glamorous deep bath isn...

It certainly isn’t true to how history really happened, but “The Great” is one of the most inventive, entertaining series out there right now. Billed by Hulu alternately as “an occasionally true story” and “an almost entirely untrue story,” it takes the real-life relationship between Catherine the Great and Peter III and twists it into something that makes for maddeningly watchable comedy and drama. Season 3 begins with a new reality for Catherine and Peter as they examine how their marriage can work with the empress in power and Russia’s former leader by her side, and things only get wilder and more chaotic from there.
“The Great” has not received the warmest reception from Emmy voters, with six nominations total and just one win over the course of its first two seasons. The pilot episode was cited for directing and writing, and Season 1 merited a production design mention. Lead...

When it comes to TV, it’s all about sticking the landing. Wildly popular shows like Seinfeld, Lost, and Game of Thrones flubbed their finales in myriad, if very different, ways, leaving fans scratching their heads or, preposterously, demanding a redo. How much a show’s overall reputation is damaged depends in large part on how badly things were botched and, more importantly, how much good will and trust was earned among the faithful throughout its run.
This year has already seen a handful of popular shows take a bow, with Ted Lasso almost completely fumbling the ball, and critical darlings Barry and The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel garnering mixed reviews for their final episodes, despite very strong seasons. After killing off its male lead, The Great seemed to wrap things up satisfyingly enough for its heroine but left the door open for more (Hulu has yet to announce whether the...

[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers for “The Great” Season 3, including the ending.]
Peter III did not live to be 295 years old, so he was going to have die at some point. The history books are murky on what actually led to the Russian emperor’s death in 1762. The version in “The Great” Season 3 is slightly more definitive, but like so much on that Hulu show, it’s more about perception than anything else. In a spring when surprise exits for central characters has led to many discussions about what shows do about what comes after, “The Great” has become a fascinating addition to the collection. How it bid adieu and what came next in the episodes that followed all speak to the strengths of a show that shouldn’t be flying under the radar.

This article contains major spoilers for season 3 of "The Great."
Empress Catherine (Elle Fanning) has been through her fair share of grief on the Hulu semi-historical dramedy "The Great," but season 3 sees her trying to endure what might be her most profound heartbreak yet following the accidental and sudden death of her husband Peter (Nicholas Hoult). She's not the only one feeling the loss, however, as his aunt Elizabeth (Belinda Bromilow) and his best friend Grigor (Gwilym Lee) must also contend with the loss of the most important person in their lives. In episode 8, "Peter and the Wolf," news of Peter's death has finally reached the court and Catherine can no longer pretend that he's fine and she simply imagined his death, which means that everyone has to process the loss of the court's biggest, loudest personality.
The episode is split into three parts, with each dedicated to following one of the grieving individuals.
