Guillermo del Toro is praising Osgood Perkins’ “Longlegs,” which scared up theaters over the weekend with a box office opening of over $22 million.
The horror film starring Maika Monroe as an FBI agent hunting Nicolas Cage — who plays a Satanic serial killer in prosthetics, white face powder, and lipstick — has become a viral hit. “Pan’s Labyrinth” and “Pinocchio” director Del Toro tweeted praise for the film on July 14.
“A great Oz Perkins film, 100 percent his vibe,” del Toro wrote. “It is comforting when a colleague fares well while staying faithful to the rhythms and motifs that have made his career. His metronome, his meticulous composition, and his uncanny sense of evil and impending doom.”
He continued, “It’s not horror as usual, or a thriller as usual. It bares the same preoccupations Oz has had from the start and his Cosmic dread. It is his vibe and signature and I...

Mia Goth has been climbing the Hollywood ladder since she first appeared on screen in the TV series, The Tunnel in 2013. However, her breakout role came in the critically acclaimed yet controversial movie Nymphomaniac: Vol. II. After this role, she has branched out into many varied renditions, further showcasing her talent. During her Hollywood climb, Mia Goth has become known as a “Scream Queen”, particularly after her collaborations with Ti West. In 2024, MaXXXine served as their third partnering, following on from X and Pearl. So, as she continues to effortlessly propel herself to A-list stature, here are 7...

The fun thing about the box office is that it always has the potential to throw a few surprises our way, and that’s exactly what happened on this hot and humid mid-July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal’s animated sequel, “Despicable Me 4,” remained in the top spot at the box office this weekend with an estimated $44.7 million, down 40% from its 4th of July opening weekend, bringing its domestic total to $211.1 million. It added another $88 million internationally in 78 markets for an overseas total of $226.7 million and $437.8 million globally. It has also become the first animated franchise to reach $5 billion globally with six movies to date and a third “Minions” movie just announced for summer 2027.
The big surprise of the weekend had to be Oz Perkins‘s eerie serial killer thriller “Longlegs” starring Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage, which received great reviews with 87% on Rotten Tomatoes...

Horror movies are a dime a dozen, so it's imperative that we celebrate the good ones when they arrive. Regrettably, audiences often miss out on a novel new entry to the genre due to bad or misleading marketing, poorly timed release dates, or an inability to grasp a unique concept, causing a potential blockbuster to flame out at the box office. On many occasions, such pictures will earn solid reviews from critics and go on to achieve cult status thanks to solid word-of-mouth. In other instances, however, many impeccably made horror pictures needlessly fade into obscurity after bombing in theaters and never find the success they deserve.
Well, I'm here to put an end to the madness. I've scoured the World Wide Web and located a handful of horror box office bombs with great RottenTomatoes scores in dire need of more attention. Some of these entries, like John Carpenter's classic "The Thing,...

Longlegs, starring Nicolas Cage is receiving rave reviews from critics and audiences. Directed by Osgood Perkins, it revolves around an FBI agent’s hunt for an occultist serial killer. However, Perkins has recently made waves not for his work on the movie, but for a controversial comment.

During an interview, Perkins spoke about his perspective on modern horror movies. However, he singled out the films of one acclaimed horror director, while expressing his thoughts on contemporary horror and filmmakers working in the space. Here is what Perkins had to say, which is likely to start a new beef.

Longlegs’ Osgood “Oz” Perkins is remarkably even-keeled for a filmmaker who’s enjoying the finest reviews of his career. His Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage-led horror-thriller has been the talk of the town for months now, as Neon’s marketing department has put together one of the more inspired promotional campaigns in recent memory. They’ve made Perkins’ fourth feature feel like a buzzy event film à la the work of his friend and collaborator, Jordan Peele, and the creepy procedural about an FBI agent’s (Monroe) self-actualizing pursuit of a Satanic serial killer (Cage) is more than worthy of that treatment. (Perkins played director Fynn Bachman in Peele’s Nope.)
Perkins’ Longlegs enters into theaters on Friday, joining Ti West’s MaXXXine, which bowed last weekend. The two genre pics share a rather interesting connection in that MaXXXine features a couple sequences involving the Psycho set on the Universal Studios backlot.

Beginning in March 2022, Ti West and Mia Goth have unfolded a decades-spanning saga with what’s commonly referred to as the “X Trilogy,” which of course kicked off with 1970s-set slasher X and continued with the 1918-set prequel Pearl and now the 1980s-set MaXXXine.
It’s of course extremely uncommon to get an entire trilogy of movies in just over two years, but what’s also incredibly unique about Ti West’s trilogy is that each film is a completely different beast altogether. The movies may not be massive box office hits but they’ve damn sure made their mark on pop culture, and they’ve even caught the attention of an all-time cinema great.

Filmmaker Joe Swanberg was a major figure in the mumblecore film movement, and as the years have gone by he has also earned several credits in the horror genre, whether by taking acting roles in films like A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Sacrament, and Blackout, or by directing the werewolf movie Silver Bullets and contributing a segment to the anthology film V/H/S. Now Swanberg has increased his number of horror credits by five, as Deadline reports that he has teamed with Jordan Yale Levine and Jordan Beckerman of Yale Entertainment to produce a slate of five horror films – all of which have already wrapped filming! Four of the titles are Helldorado, Kenneled, Yellow Eyes, and Monkey’s Magic Merry Go Round. The fifth movie is currently simply known as the Untitled Jae Matthews Project.

In Moses Sumney’s first film acting role, he dies onscreen. That’s not so much a spoiler as it is an inevitability; the movie is MaXXXine, the final installment of Ti West’s beloved Mia Goth-starring horror trilogy from which nobody makes it out alive.
Sumney plays Leon, a Hollywood Boulevard video store employee and the closest thing to a best friend that Goth’s Maxine Minx has ever experienced. The story, which follows Minx as she attempts to catapult her porn career into Hollywood stardom, plays out as The Night Stalker — a real-life serial killer from the 1980s — terrorizes Los Angeles and seemingly starts to hunt down Maxine’s own circle. It’s a dream role for any actor building up their career, but Sumney — who self-deprecatingly describes himself as “very indecisive,” but in actuality seems to lean more contemplative and careful — admits he hesitated at first...

In addition to starring in Ti West’s 1970s-set slasher X, Scott Mescudi (aka Kid Cudi) was also an executive producer on the subsequent prequel Pearl and this year’s sequel MaXXXine, and the singer/actor has taken to Twitter this week to tease another collaboration with West.
Mescudi tweets, “Wait til u see what me and Ti West do next.”
We have no idea what Mescudi is referring to at this time, so it’s important to note here that it’s not necessarily even a horror project at all. While Ti West is primarily known as a horror filmmaker, making a name for himself with films including The House of the Devil, The Innkeepers, and The Sacrament, he’s also strayed from the genre. Of particular note, West directed the Western In a Valley of Violence back in 2016. Point being, it’s not a guarantee that West and...

The highly anticipated third film in Ti West‘s X trilogy, MaXXXine is finally here, and the fans of the franchise are loving it. With a setting of the 80s when the real-life Night Stalker murders took place, the final film in the X trilogy follows the story of Maxine Minx as she finally gets her big break into the film industry, but when a mysterious serial killer begins to kill the starlets of Hollywood, Maxine’s future in the City of Angels comes into danger. MaXXXine stars Mia Goth in the lead role with Elizabeth Debicki, Halsey, Lily Collins, Sophie Thatcher, Moses Sumney, Kevin Bacon, Michelle Monaghan, Giancarlo Esposito, Chloe Farnworth, and Bobby Cannavale starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the glitz, glamour, murder, and mystery in MaXXXine, here are some similar movies you could watch next.

Chris Nash’s new slasher is a unique, thought-provoking exercise in horror storytelling. Here’s our In A Violent Nature review.
“Horror movies had maybe gotten a little soft,” Ti West told us in a recent interview about taking a break from the genre before making his acclaimed X trilogy.
It’s hard not to agree with West; horror films have somewhat lost their edge. Theme has overtaken spectacle, and while that’s not necessarily a bad thing, you rarely get a proper shocker anymore.
Enter Chris Nash and his ambient, shocking slasher, In A Violent Nature.
You’ve probably already heard about the film through enthusiastic word of mouth. It’s a horror mostly shot from the perspective of the killer and features some properly gnarly kills and a controversial ending. Even when it doesn’t quite work, it’s a film to get excited about.

Martin Scorsese is a longtime fan of indie filmmaker Ti West.
Scorsese penned a letter to the New York Times to applaud West’s “X” trilogy which recently concluded with “MaXXXine.” Mia Goth starred in all three films as both characters Maxine and Pearl, with each feature taking place in a different decade. West deployed the popular aesthetics for each respective era for the trio of films, as Scorsese explains.
According to the Oscar-winning filmmaker, West’s “X” films all embody a “different type of horror, related to different eras in American moviemaking.”
The first feature “X” is “the ’70s, the slasher era,” as Scorsese wrote. Meanwhile, prequel “Pearl” showcases the “’50s melodrama in vivid saturated color,” while “MaXXXine” captured the “’80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate” onscreen.
The films are “three linked stories set within three different moments in movie culture, reflecting back on the greater culture,” as Scorsese penned.

The 1980s was a decade that left an indelible mark on the film industry, and its visual and sonic aesthetic continues to influence modern cinema to this day. Neon-lit cityscapes, synth-heavy soundtracks, and a dystopian cyberpunk feel defined the era’s sci-fi and action movies, from Blade Runner to The Terminator, and Total Recall to RoboCop. These iconic films, often shot on VHS-tape warm colors, have become synonymous with 80s nostalgia. Their influence can still be seen in contemporary movies that pay homage to these classics, serving up slices of nostalgia for audiences who grew up on these films. Ti West‘s...

After the much-anticipated release of MaXXXine, Ti West’s trilogy is finally complete. The latest installment tries to expand the horizons set by its predecessors, X and Pearl, but falls short of grounding its ambition. Continuing the tradition but losing steam The first, X, is ‘the 70s, the slasher era’; Pearl is ’50s melodrama in vivid saturated color; MaXXXine is ’80s Hollywood, rancid, desperate.’ This quote from Martin Scorsese encapsulates the essence of each film in the trilogy. However, MaXXXine‘s attempt to honor this era feels more like an afterthought than a triumph. West and Goth’s fervent aim to represent different...

One of the standout scenes in director Ti West’s X and Pearl sequel MaXXXine (which is in theatres now) shows the character played by Mia Goth getting a life cast / head mold – which, as it turns out, is something Goth has had plenty of real-life experience with. Not only did she spend the day getting plaster spread across her face for the filming of that MaXXXine scene, but she also had to get a life cast done for the creation of the “old Pearl” makeup she wore in X, had another life cast done for the upcoming Marvel Cinematic Universe Blade reboot, and had a digital body scan done for Guillermo del Toro’s version of Frankenstein.
In a video breakdown of the MaXXXine life cast scene, Goth reminisced about her X life cast experience: “I did it for X when we were creating the mold for old Pearl,...

MaXXXine, the sequel to director Ti West‘s films Pearl and X, is now in theatres – and if you’re interested in getting some behind-the-scenes information on one of the scenes, Vanity Fair has just released a promo video in which West and franchise star Mia Goth break down the scene where Goth’s character Maxine Minx has an unpleasant experience while getting a life cast / head mold done. It’s an interesting video that has West and Goth discussing the scene, MaXXXine, and the overall franchise for twelve minutes. Check it out in the embed above!
MaXXXine was written and directed by West. Mia Goth reprises the role of X survivor Maxine Minx, a burlesque performer and adult film actress with the goal of being a star. The film has the following synopsis: In 1980s Hollywood, adult film star and aspiring actress Maxine Minx finally gets her big break.

It hasn't been a blockbuster year for horror at the box office in 2024, but A24 and director Ti West just delivered a solid little debut with "MaXXXine." Building off of the success of "X" and "Pearl" in 2022, West's trilogy centered on Mia Goth's Maxine Minx has come to a close on a high note: The latest entry opened higher than either of the previous films by a pretty significant margin. While that's still small potatoes in the grand scheme of things, a win is a win.
"MaXXXine" opened to $6.7 million domestically over the weekend, landing at number four on the charts, with "Inside Out 2" ($30.3 million) and "Despicable Me 4" ($75 million) owning the lion's share of the attention from moviegoers. But horror fans still turned out to see what West and Goth had cooked up, with the film pulling in another $1.1 million overseas for a $7.8 million global debut.

The end of the Maxxxine trilogy lands in theaters this weekend. The trilogy of horror films explores generational journies of starlets and women reaching for superstardom. How they find that success varies greatly, from infamy to adult films and even iconic roles in B-movies. Ti West and Mia Goth collaborated to write Pearl while waiting to shoot X, while West wrote each of the other stories. With that much control over the franchise, we’ve assembled nine movies that inspired the horror showcases.
The Movies That Influenced X The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974)
The most obvious influence on X comes from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The 1974 horror classic not only broke the mold of what was possible in the genre. It also helped define a specific aesthetic that would be borrowed, recycled, and reused for years. Many grindhouse movies, including Ti West, Rob Zombie, and others, openly crib off The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.

Warning: The following contains major spoilers for the X trilogy.
Ambitious women are rarely judged kindly by history. Often called cruel or heartless, they’re punished for going after what they want in a way that men simply aren’t. Especially if they choose an unconventional life, eschewing the domestic roles we’ve been told to prize. Women who choose stardom are especially vilified – either picked apart for their physical appearance or for daring to show their authentic selves to the world. And heaven help them if they show any skin. Seductive women may rise to the top, but they do so with labels like harlot, temptress, floozy, and whore.
Bette Davis, one of Hollywood’s most ambitious women, spoke on this phenomenon saying, “In this business, until you’re known as a monster you’re not a star.” This quote introduces Ti West’s MaXXXine, the concluding chapter in a trilogy exploring female ambition.

Ti West and Mia Goth complete their decade-hopping horror trilogy with MaXXXine, a sequel to both X and Pearl that’s now playing in theaters nationwide courtesy of A24.
A24 released MaXXXine in 2,450 theaters here in the United States over the weekend, with the final installment in Ti West’s trilogy scaring up $6.7 million in its domestic debut. At the worldwide box office, MaXXXine debuted to an impressive $7.8 million over the weekend.
Both of the previous films were released into theaters in 2022, with X opening to $4.2 million and Pearl opening to $3.1 million. That gives MaXXXine the highest opening out of the entire trilogy, more than doubling the domestic opening of the previous installment in the saga.
X finished its box office run with $14.7 million worldwide while Pearl made $9.8 million in total at the worldwide box office, and there’s a good chance MaXXXine will soon become the overall highest grossing movie in the trilogy.

In the world of Hollywood, many directors and filmmakers have come and gone, but only a few have managed to win the hearts of the audience with their distinct cinematic prowess. The best example of this statement would be Martin Scorsese, who not only revolutionized cinema but also brought forth a string of movies that even new-age directors cannot stop appreciating.
Mia Goth in MaXXXine || Ti West’s X account
While the director had his fair share of success, he also didn’t shy away from promoting new talent. The most recent example is Ti West’s horror trilogy, which has received nothing but praise from the Goodfellas director.

In the article series Sound and Vision we take a look at music videos from notable directors. This week: Justin Timberlake's No Angels, directed by Ti West. Ti West is obsessed with several themes, among them hedonism and the hive-mind of cults. In films as diverse as House of the Devil, The Roost and especially The Sacrament he has explored the nature of cultish behavior. From devil-worshippers (in a Satanic Panic send-up) in House of the Devil, to a Jonestown situation in The Sacrament. According to those who have seen it, MaXXXine, the final chapter in his X-trilogy, also returns to this well. Likewise, in films like the X-trilogy, House of the Devil ,but also an earlier (disowned) film like Cabin Fever 2 , he...

Once upon a time in 1970s Texas, a group of filmmakers traveled to a remote farmhouse to shoot what they hoped would be the Citizen Kane of porno flicks. Only one of them would leave that quaint rural residence alive. Cut to: that same “Final Girl” close to a decade later, when she has not only endured another round of related homicides but has been christened Hollywood’s Next Big Thing. Ti West’s MaXXXine is now in cinemas and we chatted to the director himself about the film’s ending.
Warning! Spoilers for X and MaXXXine.
Ti West concludes his X trilogy with MaXXXine, a genre-bending, steely 80s thriller that brings Maxine Minx’s story to an end.
At the end of X, Pearl promised Maxine that she’s going to end up just like her: bitter and murderous, yearning for success that would never come.
Going into MaXXXine, you might think West was interested in exploring the similarities between Pearl and Maxine, both played by Mia Goth in the trilogy. Instead, MaXXXine takes a different route and gives Maxine a happy ending, at least in some ways. During a recent interview, Film Stories asked West if he ever considered exploring Pearl’s words from X in more detail, either in MaXXXine or a potential sequel.

As his X trilogy concludes with MaXXXine – starring Mia Goth as a porn star pursued by a serial killer – the filmmaker explains how the demonisation of heavy metal fans ignited his youthful imagination
MaXXXine, the latest high-sleaze shocker from horror auteur Ti West, opens with a montage of archival footage plunging us headfirst into the height of 80s satanic panic. West’s X trilogy, which MaXXXine concludes, is preoccupied by America’s never-ending conflict between old-school puritanism and the liberalisation of social norms, and MaXXXine makes the subject more explicit than ever. The film follows adult movie star antiheroine Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) trying to make the jump into Hollywood during the height of “moral majority” conservatism in the mid-80s, while being pursued by a serial killer.
Growing up in Delaware in the 80s, West remembers being perplexed by the censoriousness he would later go on to lampoon. “I...

After three weekends of Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” dominating to become the biggest blockbuster of the year, another animated sequel took over the 4th of July weekend. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Universal released Illumination Entertainment’s animated sequel “Despicable Me 4,” once again starring Steve Carell as the voice of Gru, into 4,428 theaters on Wednesday. After making $27 million on Wednesday, and another $20.4 million on July 4, the franchise favorite earned another $75 million (estimated) over the three-day weekend for a five-day total of $122.6 million, including Wednesday and Thursday. With that, the “Minions” franchise holds three of the biggest Fourth of July openings and the biggest since “Minions: The Rise of Gru” opened with $107 million in 2022.
Even though reviews were mixed at best with 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, audiences rated it higher, going by its “A” CinemaScore.

Would theaters even be operating if not for animated films? It’s a fair question, heavily reinforced by this weekend when “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) and “Inside Out 2” (Disney) combined to gross $105 million.
So far in 2024, animated features have grossed a little under $1 billion, more than 25 percent of the total gross. Take that amount away, it’s hard to imagine most theaters staying afloat. That’s a big increase from 2023, when similar releases made up around 18 percent.
The sixth entry in the “Despicable Me/Minions” franchise grossed about $75 million for the three day weekend, $122.6 million total for five days to take #1 with ease. “Inside Out 2” took second with $30 million, down only 48 percent despite strong new competition. That comes to more than two thirds of the $157 million total.

As expected, Illumination Entertainment’s Despicable Me 4 had no problem claiming the top spot over this holiday weekend. Deadline reported that the film posted a strong – but not franchise record-setting $75 million (which isn’t far from what we predicted earlier this week). With the holiday gross, the film’s five-day total is a muscular $122.6 million. That’s the second biggest opening for one of the Despicable Me movies, but it pales compared to the Minions spin-off films, which both opened well north of $100 million on their opening weekends.
Notably, despite the common consensus that two family-oriented films would bite into each other’s box office this weekend, Pixar’s box office juggernaut, Inside Out 2, continued to hold steady with $33 million, only a 42% decline from last weekend. So far, it’s made an incredible $536 million domestically. A Quiet Place: Day One performed within franchise expectations, slipping 60% to $21 million, with...

It’s been a rollercoaster journey for Mia Goth and Shia Labeouf before they finally found each other again and even welcomed a baby girl in 2022. After meeting on the set of Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac: Vol. II in 2012, they have been in an on-and-off relationship.

The "Despicable Me" franchise now has more No. 1 box office debuts than any other animated franchise, having surpassed the previous record of five No. 1 movies established by "Shrek" and its sequels and spin-offs. Of the six "Shrek" and "Shrek"-adjacent movies released so far, "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" was the only one not to debut in first place (and it still went on to become a box office hit).
"Despicable Me 4" arrived in theaters on Wednesday this week and is on track to gross $120 million over its five-day extended opening, per Deadline. The record of six movie launches at the top of the box office charts includes the spin-off "Minions" and its sequel "Minion: The Rise of Gru," which capitalized on the popularity of supervillain (now former supervillain) Gru's army of little yellow lackeys. Since shifting to acting a decade ago, Mia Goth has cemented herself as a modern-day scream queen and has earned major recognition for her performance in the X series. After joining forces with filmmaker Ti West, Goth headlined X and its prequel Pearl, in which she played the villain of the first film, and the third entry in the trilogy, MaXXXIne, has also opened to favorable reviews.
But despite enjoying an acclaimed filmography over the course of the last ten years, Goth still struggles with one aspect of the production process, which she detailed in a recent interview.

After taking on the tragic tale of the people’s princess, Elizabeth Debicki found just the part to shake things up.
The Golden Globe winner opened up about going from her critically-acclaimed performance on Netflix‘s The Crown to starring in MaXXXine, the concluding chapter of Ti West‘s X horror trilogy that is now playing in theaters.
“I shot this quite soon after wrapping on The Crown and I found it to be a very medicinal palate cleanser,” Debicki told Forbes.
She previously won a Golden Globe for her performance as the late Princess of Wales in seasons 5 and 6 of The Crown after taking over the role from Emma Corrin.
In MaXXXine, Debicki plays director Elizabeth Bender, who gives Maxine Minx (Mia Goth) her big break in the horror sequel The Puritan II. While fulfilling her dreams, the young starlet must outrun her sinister past while the Night Stalker preys on 1980s Los Angeles.

MaXXXine, directed by Ti West, incorporates real-life serial killer Richard Ramirez to anchor the film in reality and elevate it beyond horror entertainment. Mia Goth and Elizabeth Debicki hint at multiple threads in the movie unraveling in theaters, keeping tight-lipped about Ramirez’s role in the film. Insight from Ti West Ti West compares MaXXXine to Spike Lee’s Summer of Sam, emphasizing that Ramirez plays a significant role in the story in an unexpected way. He states, It has more in common with Summer of Sam, the Spike Lee movie, than it does Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood. It does play...

On July 5, 2024, A24 released “MaXXXine,” a slasher film written, directed, produced and edited by Ti West that has Mia Goth reprising her role as Maxine Minx in the third installment of the “X” franchise. Certified fresh with a score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes, critics were thrilled by the thriller.
In this go-around, Maxine pursues her dream of becoming a famous actress while trying to avoid the Night Stalker in 1985. The ensemble cast includes Elizabeth Debicki, Moses Sumney, Michelle Monaghan, Halsey, Bobby Cannavale, Lily Collins, Kevin Bacon and Giancarlo Esposito. Read our full review round-up below.

Ti West’s “MaXXXine” has slashed its way into theaters. And the third film in the trilogy that began with 2022’s “X” and continued with the prequel “Pearl,” is perhaps the installment most steeped in other movies. This is a movie where, when a character is threatening Maxine (Mia Goth), the porn star that survived the events of “X” and now, circa “MaXXXine” is struggling to make it in mainstream Hollywood in 1985, they send her a newspaper clipping with the headline: “The Texas Porn Star Massacre,” a direct reference to Tobe Hooper’s immortal “Texas Chain Saw Massacre.”
And that’s just the beginning of the metatextual delights that make “MaXXXine” so special. We thought that we’d talk about five of the movies that fundamentally inspired “MaXXXine.”
Since we’ll be talking about plot specifics, consider this your mild spoiler warning before we get into it.

The horror genre needed to be shaken up a little lately, and Ti West took this great responsibility upon himself. The director’s X trilogy saw great success, and the recent premiere of the final installment, MaXXXine, ended the story with a bang.
At the same time, as weird as it sounds, the third movie was largely moved by Ti West’s desire to save some budget and earn more cash money for A24.
MaXXXine Knew Its Budget Management
The thing is, Ti West initially only pitched the first movie, X, but his guardian angels from A24 wanted more: they wanted a trilogy. This made the director contemplate ways to make the most out of what he’d already done by reusing the assets he already had. That was how he came up with his vision for Pearl and MaXXXine.

The 1980s were a transformative time for cinema, known for its flamboyant fashion, gritty street scenes, and the rise of both blockbuster and cult horror films. MaXXXine, the latest from writer-director Ti West, dives headfirst into this iconic era with a thrilling narrative that promises to captivate and terrify in equal measure. As the third installment in the trilogy that began with X and Pearl, MaXXXine is more than just a horror film—it’s a love letter to the vibrant and tumultuous Hollywood of the 1980s. West’s vision meticulously captures the era’s essence, blending the allure of Hollywood stardom with the sinister undercurrents of a slasher thriller. This film promises to be a visually and thematically rich addition to modern horror cinema.

Illumination and Universal’s Minions franchise isn’t getting any worse for the wear as Despicable Me 4 rules the Fourth of July box office with an estimated five-day opening of $120 million, including a three-day weekend haul of $72.4 million.
That’s in line with expectations and a strong start for the fourth outing in the main franchise, and the sixth in the Despicable Me/Minions series, which ranks as the top-grossing animated franchise of all time.
The first Despicable Me opened over the July 9-11 weekend in 2010 to $56 million. The series then shifted its release earlier and became a Fourth of July staple. 2013’s Despicable Me 2 likewise opened on July 3, a Wednesday, and posted a five-day debut of $143 million. That was followed by a $120 million five-day holiday start for the threequel in 2017.

The horror genre is in yet another renaissance – so much so that the term “elevated horror” had to be introduced as a way for non-genre fans to cope with the fact that, yes, maybe they do like horror films. But we still probably shouldn’t expect them to be featured at the Academy Awards alongside the usual fare, no matter how seriously they are being taken in 2024. But X series director Ti West has hope that one day this could change, seeing the Oscars becoming more receptive to the horror genre with just the right timing.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Ti West said that it’s possible that horror could be better represented at the Oscars, provided there is full support. “It depends on the movie, it depends on the campaign. It’s complicated. It’s something that I have never experienced, but it’s not as simple as...
