The calls for Marvel to let go of its four-quadrant approach strategy continued all summer, despite the upcoming Deadpool & Wolverine. Around Marvel, challengers for superhero storytelling, like Invincible and The Boys, continue to draw acclaim. Lucky for Marvel, Hit-Monkey returns with a second season, allowing the bloody animated series to occupy that space for them. Almost completely disconnected from the Avengers characters one usually associates with Marvel, Hit-Monkey highlights a unique angle for the studio. It’ll be curious to see if they follow this path, because the results make for an incredibly fun and emotional story.

When it came to adapting his popular tabletop card game into the “Exploding Kittens” 2D animated series (currently streaming on Netflix), Matthew Inman found inspiration in an old girlfriend’s schizophrenic cat, who got so disturbing that a priest was called to exorcise its demons. The premise became the ultimate fight between good and evil when God (Tom Ellis) and the Devil (Sasheer Zamata) are both fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity, trapped inside the bodies of two chubby house cats.
While Godcat is tasked with turning around a dysfunctional family through empathy, Devilcat, his next-door neighbor, stirs up trouble as the destructive anti-Christ. “When I got paired up with [executive producers] Mike Judge and Greg Daniels [of ‘King of the Hill’], it kind of all just came together and it clicked,” Inman told IndieWire.

Exploding Kittens originated as a popular card game that launched on Kickstarter in 2015, satirizing the stress of daily life through absurd artwork depicting cats in perilous predicaments. The objective was to avoid drawing the eponymous “Exploding Kitten” cards to avoid an explosive fate, creating light-hearted laughs among players. This whimsical premise translated surprisingly well to the animated screen, becoming a Netflix comedy series with vibrant colors and charm.
The show finds God himself in trouble after neglecting his heavenly duties. As punishment, he’s sent to Earth, trapped in the form of a cat, to better understand humanity. He’s placed with Abbie and her dysfunctional family, tasked with bringing them together. But living as a pet isn’t easy—lasers and yarn quickly distract our divine protagonist.

Even before Covid made a virtue of isolation, experts had already been describing loneliness as an epidemic for years. Now that even the most social among us have had loneliness imposed upon us as a matter of public policy, it seems to be an issue that’s top of mind for TV creators to process through their work. Baby Reindeer revolves around two lonely people who find communion, by chance, over Diet Coke in a neighborhood pub; the disastrous fallout comes later. The titular Mr. & Mrs. Smith find each other in part because they’ve built the kind of lives they can disappear from without causing alarm to friends or loved ones who’d miss them. Ripley’s eponymous protagonist is alone by necessity: the kinds of short cons he’s running for his livelihood depend on his remaining anonymous.
Though loneliness isn’t generally a hilarious topic, it animates our current comedies,...

Chris O’Dowd and the residents of Deerfield will not be back for new adventures after Apple TV+ opted not to renew the series for a third season, Deadline has confirmed.
The series, which received an early Season 2 pick-up in April 2023, comes from David West Read. It tells the story of a small town that is forever changed when a mysterious machine appears in the general store, promising to reveal each resident’s true life potential.
Starring O’Dowd as Dusty Hubbard, a seemingly content, cheerful family man and high school teacher, who watches everyone around him reevaluate their life choices and ambitions — based on the machine’s printouts — and is forced to question whether he is truly as happy as he once thought.
While he remains skeptical of the machine, his wife, Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), indulges in the dream that there’s something bigger out there for her. Like many of Deerfield’s residents,...

Today, Netflix revealed the official trailer, teaser art, and images for Exploding Kittens, which will premiere in July 2024. The new animated series is based on the best-selling card game.
Earth sucks, so God (Tom Ellis) gets fired and sent to Earth to reconnect with humanity. The catch? He’s trapped in the body of a chubby house cat.
As part of his rehabilitation, Godcat moves in with a dysfunctional family and tries to solve their problems, but he ends up spending a lot of time chasing laser pointers. To top it off, Godcat’s next-door neighbor, who is also a cat, turns out to be none other than his nemesis, the Antichrist.
The result is the ultimate fight between good and evil…except Godcat (Ellis) is distracted by a pigeon he saw in the yard, and Devilcat (Sasheer Zamata) is busy napping on someone’s laptop.

Netflix’s Exploding Kittens is an adult animated series starring Tom Ellis and Sasheer Zamata as two rotund housecats on opposite ends of a holy war.

"It's Godcat's world, and we're all just a PR ploy." Netflix has revealed another official teaser trailer for the animated series Exploding Kittens, yes it's an adaptation of the card game and comics by the same name. "God and the Devil - trapped in cat bodies." From the Executive Producers of Beavis & Butthead, King of the Hill, and The Office comes a new animated adult comedy series based on the popular card game. The eternal conflict between Heaven and Hell reaches epic proportions when both God and the Devil are sent to Earth - in the bodies of chunky house cats. The original game's premise: "Bring the catnip. Draw as many cards as you can, and do your best to dodge — or defuse — fatal felines. Or else, boom goes the dynamite!" The series pits good vs. evil - but with cats. With the voices of Tom Ellis as God Cat,...

It’s an unlikely trio, but Cass (Gabrielle Dennis), Hana (Ally Maki), and Nat (Mary Holland) are so much fun in The Big Door Prize Season 2, and no more so than in TV Insider’s exclusive sneak peek of the May 8 episode. In “Night Under the Stars,” the three have a night out at the casino and adopt new personas for the occasion—or rather, some of them do, at least. Cass is doing well, but not when it comes to maintaining her persona. Yes, she has a daughter, she says. “Do you have a problem with that?” she asks the casino worker. “Just because Britt parties hearty, honey, doesn’t mean that she can’t have her own baby girls. I mean, I have so many baby girls. In fact, I can’t even keep track. I’ve got a baby girl in every port.” Hana tells her, “I...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 Episode 4 “Storytellers.”] The Big Door Prize, with its latest episode, not only offers more information about the blue dots that have appeared on some people’s backs—Hana (Ally Maki), though she’s never used the Morpho machine, has had them for a long time—but also shows how someone loses them. “Storytellers” flashes back to when Mr. Johnson (Patrick Kerr) was younger and met the repairman who would come by the shop to fix a broken machine … and the two had plans for dinner, only the other man didn’t show up. Through the Morpho machine, he confronts his problem—a pixelated version of the man offers up excuses for why he didn’t come—and acknowledges he’s been blaming himself. And then to his surprise, his dots disappear. But should we think that’s true for everyone, or could it depend on each person?...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for The Big Door Prize Season 2 Episodes 1 “The Next Stage,” 2 “Visions,” and 3 “Power & Energy.”] Apple TV+‘s heartwarming and entertaining dramedy The Big Door Prize returns for its second season in a major way: The three episodes that drop on premiere day feature a proposal, a (temporary?) split, the next stage of the Morpho machine, and a hug that will have people talking. Hana (Ally Maki), who had worked at a bar with a Morpho machine previously, reveals she started getting the blue dots that some have and doesn’t know what causes them. It’s not much, but it’s still more than Hana has opened up thus far, and Episode 3 even shows her bonding a bit with Cass (Gabrielle Dennis). But what also makes Hana stand apart from the others is that she never used the Morpho machine. Is that something she regrets? “I think Hana’s just a...

Actress Ally Maki has demonstrated her comedy chops on TV’s Hacks, 10 Things I Hate About You, Wrecked, and as the voice of “Giggle McDimples” in the Pixar film Toy Story 4. But lately, her work has taken a dramatic turn – in the serio-comic Apple TV+ show The Big Door Prize, and especially in her new film, Seagrass.
The feature, now playing in theaters in the U.S. and Canada, stars Maki as Judith, a Japanese Canadian woman whose sense of certainty about her life begins to crumble after the death of her mother. A fraying connection to her husband Steve (Luke Roberts), a handsome but emotionally constricted white guy, prompts the couple to head to a resort in British Columbia with their two young daughters – Stephanie (Nyha Breitkreuz) and Emmy (Remy Marthaller). While the kids keep busy with other children on the beach, Judith and Steve participate in group couples’ therapy,...

"Listen to me... ghosts don't exist, okay?" Game Theory Films has revealed an official trailer for an unique indie drama titled Seagrass, from filmmaker Meredith Hama-Brown making her feature directorial debut. This Canadian production originally premiered at the Toronto Film Festival last year, and will open in both Canadian and US art house cinemas later this month. The film was the TIFF Fipresci prize winner, and a TIFF Top Ten pick. Set a decade or so in the past, Seagrass follows a Japanese-Canadian woman grappling with the death of her mother as she brings her family to a retreat. When her relationship with her husband begins to affect the children's emotional security, the family is forever changed. The film stars Ally Maki as Judith, Luke Roberts, Chris Pang, Sarah Gadon, Nyha Huang Breitkreuz, and Remy Marthaller. This film has some really strong, grainy cinematography in it - with some shots better than others.

The traditionally celebrity-heavy Toronto Film Festival has unveiled its list of Canada’s best indie films for 2023, which includes a host of first-time directors that have come to the fore as the Hollywood actors strike put local movies and talent front and center at TIFF last September.
Canadian filmmakers were able to grab the spotlight after SAG-AFTRA members barred from promoting studio or streamer projects allowed them to fill the vacuum on TIFF red carpets and at industry events.
New directors were also favorites of Toronto programmers as a shifting TIFF film market with few American celebrities in town also allowed the marquee festival to double down on finding new creative voices.
So here’s the top Canadian feature films of 2023, as decided by film pickers in Toronto.
1. BlackBerry
Matt Johnson’s drama about the meteoric rise of the world’s first smartphone, before its competitive collapse, bowed in Berlin.

Randall Park’s debut feature, Shortcomings, is an adaptation of a popular graphic novel of the same name. It portrays the experiences of Asian Americans in the most realistic and down-to-earth scenarios. With flawed characters, terrible relationships, and unhappy people, the film covers all bases. Because I watched Past Lives first and absolutely devoured it, I was left a little underwhelmed by Shortcomings. Not to compare the two films, but there’s a sense of commonality in the way they present immigration and just the feeling of being lost as Asian American adults.
Shortcomings is essentially a character study of Ben (not the one from Umbrella Academy), a struggling filmmaker who is at a low point in his life in terms of interpersonal relationships. His best friend, Alice, may be the only other person who can understand him and empathize with him without judging his behavior. Ben’s journey of...

Randall Park has been many things: versatile sitcom star, writer of a hit movie, Marvel utility player and the guy who spoofed Kim Jong Un in that thing that almost broke Hollywood. With Shortcomings, however, he may take his biggest stride towards reaching his full potential by adding feature director to his long resume.
It’s easy to assume that Park’s foray might be based on a script of his own, but the film borrows its name, narrative and screenwriter from the cult comic by Adrian Tomine. Like the graphic novel, the comedy follows Ben (Justin H.
