Streaming now on Netflix, the fifth episode of Homicide: Los Angeles is titled “The Disappearing Wife.” Money and greed can destroy almost any relationship, a theme we’ve seen time and time again. However, this story takes it to an unprecedented extent. The episode begins with Bruce Koklich reporting his wife Jana missing. He appears devastated, upset, and willing to do anything to find her. Bruce is seen offering to pay a large ransom, cooperating fully with the police, and providing information to the media to maximize coverage. What happened to Jana? Was she found? Is she dead? And if so, who is responsible and why? We’ll explore these questions in this episode explainer.
Why is Jana’s father assumed to be involved in her disappearance?
On August 20th, 2001, Jana went missing. She and her husband Bruce both worked at the same real estate company. They were super ambitious...

Hank Azaria’s current vocal character is the first one that’s ever made him throw up out of nervousness before a performance — but that also could have been the Kwik-e Mart hot dog.
The Manhattan-born Simpsons star has always been a vocal-cord chameleon, and he has mastered a massive and diverse spectrum of characters, from Moe Szyslak to Chief Wiggum to, until 2020, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, a role that Azaria famously retired in the wake of comedian Hari Kondabolu’s feature-length documentary callout The Problem with Apu. However, when Azaria agreed to give up his non-white voice parts on The Simpsons, he never signed anything preventing him from impersonating a New Jerseyan — even the Boss of the bunch isn’t off-limits, apparently.

Throughout the years, many actors have come forward to take on the hefty responsibility of playing Batman in live-action including Ben Affleck, Christian Bale, George Clooney, and more. While some absolutely nail the role, others do not. Unfortunately, actor Iain Glen falls in the latter category.
George Clooney as Batman in Batman & Robin | Warner Bros.
Iain Glen played the role of Bruce Wayne in the show Titans, making his first appearance in the second season. His portrayal of the Caped Crusader was met with unfavorable reviews. The veteran actor brought an older version of Bruce to the screen and while there was potential, the execution was not the finest. In fact, some fans would even go as far as to say that Iain Glen is the worst Batman we have seen so far in live-action.

A few months back, the producers of The Simpsons were confused when they heard Hank Azaria’s latest batch of voice-acting recordings. For 36 years, he’s brought to life a substantial chunk of Springfield’s animated population, from Chief Wiggum to Comic Book Guy to Moe the bartender. Now, though, all of those guys were sounding kind of… hoarse. Azaria knew exactly what was wrong, but kept his explanation vague. “I’m working on a thing,” he said, and eventually re-recorded some of the performances.

Exclusive: BBC Studios Productions, which is behind series such as ABC’s Dancing With The Stars and CBS’ Ghosts, is bringing together its U.S. and UK production teams in a restructure that will see the departure of Valerie Bruce.
The company, which is the commercial production division of the British public broadcaster, is aligning its U.S. unscripted entertainment and scripted teams, largely based out of LA, with their UK counterparts.
As such, Bruce, who is General Manager of its LA Productions unit, is leaving after 13 years.
The move will see Ryan O’Dowd, EVP, Entertainment & Music, reporting directly to Matt Forde, BBC Studios Productions’ MD, Global Entertainment, who is based in London. O’Dowd, who is understood to have renewed his deal with BBC Studios, will now work closer with the company’s UK development team as it looks to develop more formats that can travel into the U.

Prime Video's Batman: Caped Crusader looks set to put a completely new spin on the iconic DC Comics character. However, when the series was first announced, many fans hoped it might serve as a continuation of Batman: The Animated Series.
After all, it had been confirmed that producers Matt Reeves (The Batman) and J.J. Abrams (Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker) would be joined by the creative mastermind behind the classic series, Bruce Timm.
Instead, the show - which was offloaded by Warner Bros. Discovery to Amazon after originally being developed for Max as part of a series of cost-cutting measures - will take us to 1940s Gotham City and "Week Two" of Bruce Wayne's time as Batman.
Talking to Empire Magazine (via Toonado.com), Timm revealed that Batman: Caped Crusader will make a major change to Bruce's transformation into a masked vigilante...specifically in regards to when he chooses to suit up.

Lego is paying tribute to Steven Spielberg’s game-changing summer 1975 blockbuster Jaws with a new set. To promote the release, Lego has also shared a “brick buster” short film titled Jaws in a Jiffy.
Created by Irish Jaws and Lego fan Johnny Campbell, the 1,497-piece set contains minifigures of the film’s characters Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), Matt Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss), and Sam Quint (Robert Shaw) as they face off against the shark from the deck of their boat, the Orca. Check out a photo gallery below.
In addition to the boat, minifigures, and the infamous shark (aka “Bruce”), the Jaws set includes accessories like a revolver, compass, fishing rod, harpoon, spear, and yellow barrels.
“I actually freeze-framed Jaws as I watched it so that I could catch a glimpse of the finer details, taking notes as I went along,” Campbell said in a statement. “It is just mind-blowing that...

Who else participated in the annual tradition of watching Jaws on the 4th of July? Every year, I hope that more merchandise will arrive, celebrating Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece. Surprisingly, Lego is answering that call!
The Orca, its crew, and the killer great white shark nicknamed “Bruce” are coming soon in Lego form! Are you ready to chum the waters with red bricks?
Lego item #21350 will start shipping on August 6. Insiders can get access to the Jaws set as early as August 8. The brick version of Jaws will cost $149.99.
Bruce and the Orca are made of 1,497 pieces. Of course, Quint, Brody, and Hooper are the three minifigures included. Sadly, the semi-digested remains of Chrissie Watkins and Alex Kintner are not included.
The Orca is very scaled down. It consists of just the cabin with the dining table. That’s Ok with me, but don’t expect to fit all three...

While an official crossover to bring together the holy trinity of superhero fiction is still a far-fetched dream, with the sixth episode of the ongoing season, Amazon Studio’s The Boys has let their own versions of Superman, Batman, and Spidey share the screen together in the worst way imaginable. Among them, the Batman pastiche, Tek Knight, aka Robert Vernon, an infamous detective-superhero with heightened senses, stole the scene with his ridiculous perversion and contributed to a major reveal regarding Homelander’s scheme. However, by the end of the episode, it seems the chances of the character’s return are relatively low, as Tek Knight gets unceremoniously killed off by his own butler, Elijah.
Spoilers Ahead
Is Tek Knight Really Dead ?
Introduced in the spin-off series Gen V, Tek Knight seemed like such a potentially interesting character with his superpower of heightened senses and could have made an interesting adversary...

John Mayer is just one of several high-profile special guests (hello Bruce) featured on Bryan’s brand-new album, The Great American Bar Scene, but he’s the first to share effusive public praise of the 28-year-old’s fifth record.
Recorded at Electric Lady in New York, Mayer added guitar to “Better Days,” one of several understated ballads on Bryan’s album, which he released earlier today.
“I always knew this song Zach wrote was special,” Mayer said on X. “I had no idea how beautiful, powerful and deep an album it would be part of.

Be still, our sweating wallets: Lego has announced a 1,497-piece Jaws Lego set, which includes everything you need to recreate the film’s third act.
To celebrate the open Amityville beaches on this, the 4th July, Lego has announced a 1,497-piece Jaws set. It is, as you’ve probably gathered, based on Steven Spielberg’s 1975 classic, and contains everything you need to recreate its third act. In other words, you’ll be able to build the Orca boat and the three heroes that set off in it – so you’ll get minifigs based on Chief Brody (Roy Scheider), Hooper (Richard Dreyfuss) and Quint (Robert Shaw).
Most importantly, you’ll be able to build a Great White shark (which you can call Bruce if you like), and there are even a few yellow barrels among the accessories included with the set. Released in August (on the 3rd for Lego Insiders members...

The sudden death of martial arts superstar Bruce Lee in 1973 shocked the world. Fans everywhere mourned the loss of an icon who had left us far too soon. Lee had accomplished so much in his short but brilliant career, popularizing martial arts cinema globally with smash hits like Enter the Dragon. Yet when that fateful day arrived, Lee had just begun to make his mark. Four iconic films were not enough; the world wanted more.
In Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Korea, filmmakers saw an opportunity. If they couldn’t deliver more from the master himself, they would find men to carry on his legacy in spirit, if not in fact. Let me get this out of the way first. Tony Goldwin’s Ezra can be perceived in two distinctly different ways. You may take it as a story of a well-meaning but reckless father endangering his autistic son by kidnapping him. Or you can see it as a desperate father trying his best to save his son from the big bad world. The film leans very much towards the latter; but it also doesn’t totally dismiss the other one. That has a lot to do with the fact that Ezra stems from its writer Tony Spiridakis’ own life experience in bringing up his autistic son and also the ending of his marriage. This has brought a certain gravitas to the screenplay. There was every chance of Ezra ending up overly sentimental, given the history of the portrayal of autism in cinema hasn’t been particularly great. I’m not...

Filmmaker Zack Snyder was allowed to share his vision for Justice League with the world in 2021, though that ultimately just saw the #ReleaseTheSnyderCut movement transform into #RestoreTheSnyderVerse. With it clear that's never going to happen, the campaign has largely lost steam in recent months.
Today, though, Snyder has taken to Vero to confirm that Zack Snyder's Justice League will be released theatrically. Before getting too excited, this may be a fan screening instead of a limited or wide release, likely organised by the director.
However, Warner Bros. may also be looking to recoup some of its losses given how successful other re-releases have been this year; Sony Pictures, for example, netted millions by putting the Spider-Man movies back in theaters earlier this summer. Still, reminding moviegoers of the Dceu...

Bruce Timm is responsible for Batman: The Animated Series and returns to the Dark Knight's world with next month's Batman: Caped Crusader when the series launches on Prime Video.
Produced by Timm alongside J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves, the series takes place in the 1940s and pulls inspiration from the character's earliest comic book adventures. The setting isn't the only big change, though, as Timm says this story plays out even earlier in Batman's vigilante career than Frank Miller's "Year One."
"Batman is so early in his career that in the first episode, he’s still an urban myth," he tells Empire Online (via Toonado.com). "It’s not 'Year One.' It’s more like 'Week Two.'"
Elaborating on what looks to be a very different approach to Batman, Timm adds, "I wanted to make him kind of weird, and spooky. If you...

Back in the ‘90s, Bruce Timm helped reinvent Batman in The Animated Series – a beloved cartoon that remains a huge hit with Bat-fans all around the world. And now, he’s hoping to do it again. Following The Animated Series and Batman Beyond, Timm has teamed up with J.J. Abrams and The Batman director Matt Reeves for animated outing Batman: Caped Crusader – an all-new take on the mythology of Bruce Wayne that transplants the characters we know and love to 1940s Gotham.
It’s not just the Noir-ish locales and streaming delivery that will mark Caped Crusader out as a distinct Bat-series. It’s one that gets into the earliest days of Wayne’s nocturnal crime-fighting exploits. “Batman is so early in his career that in the first episode, he’s still an urban myth,” Timm informs Empire. “It’s not ‘Year One’,” he notes, referring to the iconic Frank Miller...

Plot: A deep dive into the Bruce Lee exploitation film craze that dominated grindhouse cinema after the iconic martial artist’s death.
Review: Flashback to the year 1994. On my 13th birthday, while cruising the video store for a movie to watch with my friends at my birthday sleepover, on a whim, I decided to rent Enter the Dragon. I was never the same. After watching it, I enrolled in Karate classes and tried to learn as much about Bruce Lee as possible. While cruising those same video store aisles, I was very confused by how many kung-fu movies had his name and image on the cover, given that, even back then, I knew there were only four Bruce Lee movies, plus Game of Death. And why were they constantly misspelling his name? Who was Bruce Le? Or Bruce Li? Or Bruce Liang?
This, of course, was my introduction to the...

Christian Bale’s Batman will forever remain iconic. The actor perfectly captured the essence of the Caped Crusader and with Christoper Nolan’s help, was able to bring forth some of the best superhero films of all time. The Dark Knight trilogy set the bar so high that it is near-impossible for others to reach the height.
Christian Bale in The Dark Knight (2008) | Warner Bros. Pictures
Playing a character like Batman is not an easy task and there is very little room for error. After all, there are years and years of history behind the superhero and we wouldn’t want to upset the die-hard fans now, would we? In order to bring their best out, actors improvise sometimes and while Christian Bale tried to do so once, Michael Caine brutally shut him down and the young actor decided that it was better for him not to argue back.

After 3 seasons, John Wilson is tired of people questioning the integrity of “How To With John Wilson.” However, when you spend 18 episodes curating the most unbelievable New York oddities and storylines while sending crews out to film “houses that look like faces” or a “bunch of bottles of urine discarded on the sidewalk” (which are actually pretty easy to find in the city), the public can’t help but wonder if the subjects of his docuseries on HBO are really… real.
The master of weaving seemingly unrelated narratives and anecdotal tangents together into an (often emotional) truth about humanity sat down with Variety‘s Making a Scene to discuss why he was ready to address the disbelievers and unveil his process of creating the final season of “How To.”

As Brody Jenner steps into the fatherhood role, he hopes to take on the duties much differently than Caitlyn Jenner.
Jenner, 39, and his fianceé Tia Blanco welcomed their first child, a daughter named Honey, on July 29th, which they shared in an Instagram post to the world on Friday. The pair also uploaded a YouTube video documenting Blanco’s pregnancy journey where Jenner vowed to have a solid bond with his newborn, differently than Caitlyn Jenner had with him.

Stars: Lakeith Stanfield, Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rosario Dawson, Chase W. Dillon, Daniel Levy, Jamie Lee Curtis, Jared Leto | Written by Katie Dippold | Directed by Justin Simien
Directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People), this disappointing comedy-horror is Disney’s second attempt at turning their popular theme park attraction into a movie franchise, following the disastrous 2003 Eddie Murphy vehicle. With a shorter, snappier running time, it could have been a fun ride – much like the attraction itself – but instead it’s a bloated, painfully dull and wildly uneven mess that quickly outstays its welcome, despite the efforts of its talented comic cast.
The film gets off to a bad start with a confusing jump from a meet-cute between astrophysicist Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) and haunted house tour guide (Charity Jordan) to a period some years later, where he is both an alcoholic and a haunted house tour guide operator himself,...

It’s nothing new for a musical to be based on a movie. But in the new comedy “The Shark Is Broken,” which officially opened on Broadway Thursday night, viewers are going back to 1975’s “Jaws” — but not in the way movie fans remember.
“The Shark is Broken” is co-written by and starring Ian Shaw, the son of the late Robert Shaw, who of course played ship captain Quint in the original blockbuster. In the play, Shaw portrays his own father alongside Broadway vet Alex Brightman as Richard Dreyfuss and Colin Donnell as Roy Scheider in a behind-the-scenes comedy based on the infamously difficult movie shoot.
As cinephiles are aware, “Jaws” had a troubled production: shooting on the water proved more difficult than Steven Spielberg imagined, and the mechanical shark (nicknamed “Bruce”) frequently broke down. The 90-minute play imagines several days of the shoot when Dreyfuss, Shaw, and Scheider were stuck on a boat,...

Fans of Bruce Lee will be happy to learn that there will be new content featuring the Dragon that will be coming out in the form of an anime. Shannon Lee, Bruce’s daughter and the head of his estate, has released a new teaser trailer for an anime to be called House of Lee. The trailer is a true teaser as it only runs for half a minute and showcases quick snippets of animation where Lee is doing his warm-up exercises reminiscent of his preparing to fight Chuck Norris in The Way of the Dragon, as well as small clips of what’s to come in the series.
Deadline reports that the trailer for House of Lee is attached to the special 50th anniversary 4K screenings of Enter the Dragon, which are set to play in over 650 theaters on Sunday, August 13 and Wednesday, August 16. The creative IP branch of the Bruce Lee Family Companies,...

The Story: Eddie Hawkins (Bruce Willis) aka the Hudson Hawk is a master cat burglar recently released from prison after a long stretch. Determined to go straight, he’s nonetheless blackmailed by the psychotic Darwin (Richard E. Grant) and Minerva Mayflower (Sandra Bernhard) to undertake a series of jobs in Rome involving the components of a machine designed by Leonardo da Vinci that converts lead into gold.
The Players: Starring: Bruce Willis, Andie MacDowell, Danny Aiello, James Coburn, Richard E. Grant and Sandra Bernhard. Directed by Michael Lehman.
The History: With Bruce Willis’s sad health situation forcing him into retirement, it’s worth digging into his filmography to examine some of his less-seen gems. For me, one of the big ones is Hudson Hawk. In 1991, Bruce Willis was arguably at the peak of his fame. “Moonlighting” was done and Die Hard had made him into one of the biggest action stars in town,...

Travis Scott’s Circus Maximus event in Rome has renewed concerns about hosting concerts at the historical site after the rapper’s 60,000-strong crowd created enough buoyant movement to register a 1.3 magnitude earthquake.

As Bruce Lee once famously said, “Be water”, meaning in part that people should be able to adapt to any situation. And while John Wick director has updated the action movie game, he can’t help but recognize the films may not have gotten there without the words, style and ethics of Bruce Lee.
Speaking with Empire on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Enter the Dragon – arguably Lee’s trademark movie – Chad Stahelski said, “A lot of what we do in John Wick, the non-verbal communication, is based off of what Bruce did….I love the action, but I’m also a sucker for his personality. Half the reason you love what he does is that you love him: the innocence and the arrogance. He projects the confidence of a young man trying to find himself. Bruce knew how to be vulnerable, and I really appreciate that about him.

This Star Trek: Strange New Worlds article contains spoilers.
Andorian chief engineer Hemmer was one of the highlights of the first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, thanks in large part to actor Bruce Horak’s gruff sweetness. Fans truly felt the loss when Hemmer sacrificed himself to save the crew from the Gorn in “All Those Who Wander,” even if it made way for the equally wonderful Carol Kane as new chief engineer Pelia.
But that didn’t mark the end of Horak’s time in Star Trek. We got a brief glimpse of Hemmer as both a zombie projection and a priority one YouTube video in season 2’s “Lost in Translation,” as Uhura called upon the teaching of her old friend to solve a complex communication problem. Now, Horak is back in the new musical episode, “Subspace Rhapsody,” but not as Hemmer.

Steven Spielberg’s Jaws is a tough act to follow. Not only has it come to define the entire shark horror subgenre, but this aquatic adventure movie also revolutionized the concept of the summer blockbuster as we know it today. It’s difficult to understate the film’s legacy. From archetypal characterization, iconic kills, ubiquitous catch phrases, and an incredible score, Jaws is a nearly flawless film that continues to terrify new audiences to this day. The same cannot be said for its sequels, however.
The underrated Jaws 2 feels a bit more like a slasher with its cadre of teens stranded in deadly water. The fourth installment, Jaws: The Revenge, is known for its implausible plot and Michael Caine’s hilarious yet dismissive comments. While the aforementioned sequels have their merits–and fair share of ardent supporters–when it comes time to defend Jaws 3D, few rise to the occasion.

Those of us that were alive in 1989 can attest that Batmania had taken over. Warner Brothers’ marketing machine was working overtime to make sure that the bat symbol was everywhere. It’s no wonder that when the film came out, it was a giant hit grossing over $400 million dollars. Adjusted to 2023 rates, that is just over $1 billion dollars. When it came time for a sequel, the team got back together again and put out another home run although it would bring in a little bit less at the box office.
That was okay though as this time Warner Brothers had prepared to push the movie with all sorts of merchandise. Just about any type of clothing you could think of had a bat symbol on it. When it came time to make a third film, that’s when it all seemed to fall apart. Tim Burton had a...

“Just Shoot Me” star David Spade is calling out what’s fake and what’s real in an exclusive first trailer for Fox’s new game show, “Snake Oil.”
“More than 4 million animals go chronically un-petted by their owners,” said a voiceover for what appeared to be a real-life commercial for a pet-petter. “Give them the pets they deserve with Bruce’s Better Petter. It’s motion-activated with a full range of physical affection.”
The gag is, the product nor its commercial were authentic.
“Ok, this product isn’t real. It’s snake oil. However, this is very real,” host Spade said, cutting in. The video then switched to a shot of the “Snake Oil” set and its participants.
The series is hosted by Spade and executive produced by actor, writer and producer Will Arnett, who currently hosts Fox’s” Lego Masters.”

Travis Scott’s determination to perform his new album Utopia at an ancient international monument is sending him to Italy. The rapper announced that in one week, on Aug. 7, he will bring his latest live show to Circus Maximus, an entertainment stadium and public park in Rome that used to host chariot races. The event will possibly get Scott’s live performance plans back on track after his scheduled appearance at the Pyramids of Giza in Egypt was canceled due to production-related complications.

Hayley Williams doesn’t have time for internet trolls. On Sunday, July 30th, the Paramore singer took to Instagram while recovering from a lung infection — which caused the postponement of some of the band’s tour dates — and slammed sexist “internet bros” for their critical outcries against her.
Sharing a screenshot of a post in which a Twitter user tried to give her shit for postponing the shows with the argument that Metallica and Iron Maiden are both older than her and still “manage” to perform, Williams served a slam-dunk response: “Neither James [Hetfield] nor Bruce [Dickinson] are gonna suck your dick for this, love.”
Williams then shared another screenshot, showing a Twitter user comparing her to Dave Grohl, who famously finished a Foo Fighters concert after breaking his leg in 2015. The twitter user called Williams “whiney,” but she eloquently responded with the truth. “I have a lung infection, you soft shit!

People who spend all day spewing hate on the internet have mastered the art of being loud and wrong. A subset of that community recently aimed at Hayley Williams following the postponement of several Paramore concerts while she recovered from a non-contagious lung infection. From their perspective, as people who likely haven’t performed even one percent of the number of shows that Williams has, she should have powered through — like Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl did when he broke his leg, apparently. The front woman isn’t usually one to...

Julian Barry, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the 1974 Lenny Bruce biopic “Lenny” starring Dustin Hoffman, has died at the age of 92, his daughter announced to The New York Times.
Born in the Bronx and a graduate of Syracuse, Barry got his start in showbiz on Broadway as an actor and stage manager, most notably in Orson Welles’ 1955 production of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”
In 1969, Columbia Pictures approached Barry about writing a biopic about the life of stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce, who had died of a morphine overdose three years prior. Bruce accepted, but the project fell through as Columbia fast-tracked other projects.
Not wanting to give up on the script, Barry repurposed it as a stage play and brought it to Broadway in 1971 with “Hair” director Tom O’Horgan and with Cliff Gorman as Lenny Bruce. The play “Lenny” was a success, with Gorman winning a Tony Award for for his performance.

Disney's newest attempt at turning a theme park ride into a feature film has arrived with the silly spook-fest with a heart of gold, "Haunted Mansion." Fans need no reminder that the beloved attraction made its name on the strength of humor, scares, and a unique approach to the classic haunted house setup that took full advantage of what Disney does best. After the 2003 Eddie Murphy-starring film came and went (though not before inspiring a bit of a cult following over the intervening years), all eyes were trained on director Justin Simien and his star-studded take on the beloved IP.
The basic structure isn't too far afield from what audiences might expect: a grieving widower named Ben Matthias (Lakeith Stanfield) has given up on his astrophysicist passions and his dabbles in the supernatural, turning into an avowed skeptic with absolutely no patience for the ghost-obsessives around him in New Orleans.

“The Wonder Years” set the stage for an awkward “West Wing” reunion ahead of the ABC sitcom’s latest episode Wednesday.
In an exclusive clip shared with TheWrap, Bill Williams (Dulé Hill) and his wife Lillian (Saycon Sengbloh) have a quick conversation about the party they’re attending at the home of his new friend Alan (Bradley Whitford).
After delighting party guests with a Marvin Gaye joke, Bill is interrupted by Lillian after she comes to him with a concerned look on her face and suggesting they should both go home.
“I think this is some kind of sex party,” Lillian tells her husband in the clip. He tries to ease her mind, saying that she should stop reading their daughter Kim’s Cosmopolitan magazine.
“Sex party? My goodness Lillian, just be cool,” he adds, before Alan comes behind and puts his arm around him.
“Hey, you guys want to come down to the basement?...

Disney’s Haunted Mansion seeks to course correct from its looser adaptation of the famous theme park dark ride in 2003 with a new, much more faithful feature-length adaptation. That’s a tall order considering the original attraction opened in 1969, amassing decades’ worth of lore and history within its hallowed, spooky walls. Yet director Justin Simien and writer Katie Dippold carefully thread 999 happy haunts into a cohesive but densely packed storyline that brings every bit of the grim grinning ghost funhouse antics, mythology, and details you’d expect. But it’s Simien and Dippold’s poignant approach to grief and death that solidifies their Haunted Mansion as worthwhile gateway horror for a new generation.
Once a promising young scientist, Ben (Lakeith Stanfield) now drinks his life away when not leading ghost tours in New Orleans. Ben’s deep in the throes of grief, trapped at a crossroads after his beloved wife’s passing.

For a few years there back in the early ’80s, Disney took a turn to the dark side, releasing live-action movies like “The Watcher in the Woods” (featuring a creepy late-career Bette Davis) and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (from the mind of Ray Bradbury) that were intense enough to inspire nightmares — in kids, at least. The youngsters of that time are now parents, and some are surely asking themselves how far they can trust Disney not to traumatize another generation when a movie like “Haunted Mansion” comes along.
Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. In 2003, audiences watched Eddie Murphy drop into “Haunted Mansion” in Rob Minkoff’s poorly received riff on Disney’s famous ride. Now 20 years later, Justin Simien, director of “Dear White People” and a former Disneyland ride operator, is trying his hand at putting the “grim, grinning ghosts” of the popular theme park attraction on the big screen — and the results are impressive.
Simien’s “Haunted Mansion” is a wondrous blend of horror and comedy, tinged with emotional resonance in its story of grief and how we try to connect with those we’ve lost. Anchored by a phenomenal performance by Lakeith Stanfield (“Atlanta”) and a solid ensemble, “Haunted Mansion” is a worthy take on the ride and a sleeper hit for families looking to find a fun summer film.
