Comedians David Spade and the late Chris Farley were one of the most memorable comedy duos of the '90s, both as ⅔ of the Gap Girls on "Saturday Night Live" and as co-leads of two of the decade's classic buddy films. Decades beyond the release of the latter film, Penelope Spheeris' "Black Sheep," it still delivers plenty of Farley's physical comedy -- its funniest scenes sees him tussle with a bat and a steep hillside -- and strong buddy chemistry with Spade. But the end product mimics the earlier "Tommy Boy," but without much of that film's magic, leading one of its leading men to wish the movie had been axed.
Coming out of "SNL" fame, Farley signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. "Tommy Boy'' fulfilled the first half, grossing 32 million on a 20 million budget. Following Farley's Tommy Callahan III on a mission to sell brake pads with a less-than-thrilled Spade in tow,...

Holy schnikes is it hard to live up to "Tommy Boy." While it wasn't exactly a critical darling, it performed ridiculously well in home video rentals, but none of that matters compared to the love audiences had and continue to have for the Chris Farley classic. Despite its textbook goofy '90s comedy score and some of the more painfully uncomfortable humor that hasn't aged well, "Tommy Boy" is as loveable as its lead, Herbie Hancock and all. At its core, it has a whole lot of heart which sets it apart from the rest of Farley's films. Take "Black Sheep," for example.
According to David Spade (via Uproxx), ahead of shooting "Tommy Boy," Farley had signed a two-picture deal with Paramount. Evidently, this was an effort to prove to studio execs that he was serious about his career in the wake of repeated stints in rehab. So regardless of the initial film's success,...

In show business, sometimes Hollywood giveth, and Hollywood taketh away. All Bible quotes aside, the idiom almost applied to the 1995 comedy "Tommy Boy." After having them on "Saturday Night Live" together, executive producer Lorne Michaels recognized the chemistry between best friends Chris Farley and David Spade and pitched the idea for a movie featuring the two comedians.
The original draft of "Tommy Boy" focused more on the relationship between Tommy (Farley) and his stepbrother Paul (Rob Lowe). But the concept wasn't working for director Peter Segal. "I felt that was the B story," Segal told Deadline on the film's 25th anniversary. "The A story was these two guys who didn't get along, forced to work together to save this company, and the town."
That required a comprehensive rewrite of the script. There was just one problem: Farley and Spade were due back in New York for the new season of "Saturday Night Live.

May on the Criterion Channel will be good to the auteurs. In fact they’re giving Richard Linklater better treatment than the distributor of his last film, with a 13-title retrospective mixing usual suspects—the Before trilogy, Boyhood, Slacker—with some truly off the beaten track. There’s a few shorts I haven’t seen but most intriguing is Heads I Win/Tails You Lose, the only available description of which calls it a four-hour (!) piece “edited together by Richard Linklater in 1991 from film countdowns and tail leaders from films submitted to the Austin Film Society in Austin, Texas from 1987 to 1990. It is Linklater’s tribute to the film countdown, used by many projectionists over the years to cue one reel of film after another when switching to another reel on another projector during projection.” Pair that with 2008’s Inning by Inning: A Portrait of a Coach and your completionism will be on-track.

Hard to imagine, but it’s 25 years ago today that Paramount released Tommy Boy, the road-trip comedy that featured the best representation of the movie star potential of Chris Farley. Paired with Saturday Night Live castmate and close friend David Spade, Farley’s athleticism and physical comic ability was used to maximum effect in a career cut way short as a life of excess caught up to him and he died at age 33 in 1997. Only two years after his breakout performance. Here, director Pete Segal recalls the unforgettable experience of working with him.

“My Frank and I can overcome anything as long as we’re together,” the very well-to-do Nancy Teagarten avers. Whether that includes going broke without their college-bound daughter or nosy neighbors knowing about it is debatable.
Here’s the first trailer for Drunk Parents, starring Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek as the proud dad and mom who must scramble to cloak their financial implosion. Here’s the logline: Frank and Nancy Teagarten are a staunchly lower upper-class couple with a shiny black Range Rover and tasteful Tudor-style home. They couldn’t be prouder as they anxiously drop off their daughter at her first day of college. However, a visit by the repo man shortly thereafter leaves them scrambling to make ends meet, and it seems their wealth is less secure than it appears.

While most people might be thrilled at the thought of having Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek as parents, one peak behind the curtain might have them changing their tune. The two telegenic stars play a married couple who have fallen into deep financial trouble in the simply titled “Drunk Parents,” a new comedy from “Grown Ups” scribe Fred Wolf which released a first trailer today. In addition to Baldwin and Hayek, the film stars a veritable feast of screen favorites that includes Jim Gaffigan, Joe Manganiello, Bridget Moynahan, Treat Williams, comedian Aasif Mandvi, and Broadway breakout Ben Platt.
The movie follows the upper middle-class couple as they hit a bit of financial trouble and struggle to pay their daughter’s college tuition. They launch a series of money-making schemes, including renting out a friend’s mansion and selling his possessions on craigslist. Gaffigan, whose presence at this year’s Sundance...

"You're supposed to be looking after his property!" Vertical Ent. has debuted the first trailer for the comedy Drunk Parents, directed by the writer of Grown Ups and Grown Ups 2 - which should give you a good idea of what to expect, and it explains why this title is so blunt. The plot follows two alcoholic parents who attempt to hide their ever increasing financial troubles from their daughter and their social circle through elaborate neighborhood schemes. Salma Hayek and Alec Baldwin star as the parents, and the full cast includes Joe Manganiello, Bridget Moynahan, Treat Williams, Jim Gaffigan, Aasif Mandvi, and Ben Platt, with Michelle Veintimilla as the daughter. This is one of those comedies that is so dumb and so absurd it might actually be entertaining, but probably not. You already know what to expect to see here. Exclusive: Lunch Lady, the graphic novel series that had been set up at Universal Pictures, has moved to Sony Pictures with a new writer, Fred Wolf. The series, from writer-illustrator Jarrett Krosoczka, is described as a PG-13 family/action comedy with a female superhero.
What we know about it: The protagonist is described as “a spatula-wielding crime fighter,” a school cafeteria server who clandestinely dishes out justice with the assistance of a friend. Meanwhile, three kids figure out something is up and set out to prove that she is living two lives — one as a fierce crime fighter and the other as a mild-mannered woman who serves up mashed potatoes and green beans.
Lunch Lady has several titles in the series — hence a possible franchise for the studio. David Beaubaire and Sara Rastogi are overseeing the project for Sony.

The original Joe Dirt became something of a cult classic on DVD, even moreso in our household where it gets watched at least every other month… For some reason that underdog tale of a man beaten down by life but refusing to take it, living everday to its potential really struck a chord. But the same can’t be said for the sequel, which is essentially a parody of It’s a Wonderful Life, making a mockery of the first film and the character, in a movie that feels like it was made more for the cast to have fun and work than for the audience to enjoy.

In case you didn’t get your fill of Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek’s zany relationship on “30 Rock,” the charismatic characters will be getting tipsy together in “Drunk Parents.” Noting the self-explanatory title, the film will find two empty nesters drinking their cares away after their daughter goes off to college; hilarity and bad decisions ensue. Allison Estrin and Henry Russell Bergstein are the designated casting directors for the feature. Fred Wolf will direct the New York–based production that’s looking to kick off in mid-January. Bryan Cranston is tackling Nathaniel Hawthorne in his next big-screen venture, “Wakefield.” The film, based on Hawthorne’s short story of the same name, follows a man who suddenly leaves his wife and disappears in an effort to detach from his life. But when his estate is settled and his wife, assuming her widowhood, restarts her life, he reappears. Robin Swicord will...

After scoring big hits as a writer with Grown Ups and its sequel, House Bunny director Fred Wolf has recently returned to directing (and to a previous cult "favourite") with Crackle's Joe Dirt 2. Now he's got his next project lined up. He'll direct Drunk Parents, which may sound like a vehicle for Adam Sandler or David Spade, but will actually mark a 30 Rock reunion for Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek.Wolf wrote the screenplay with Peter Gaulke, with whom he also worked on 2008's Strange Wilderness. The story sees parents Baldwin and Hayek waving goodbye to their daughter as she goes off to college, and immediately going on a drinking binge to celebrate their first time alone for 18 years. This leads them to make some Bad Decisions and get involved in a kidnapping and a case of mistaken identity.“Alec and Salma are both incredibly charismatic, hilarious talents," says producer Robert Ogden Barnum.

The Hick Yourself! app allows users to add mullets, mustaches, and other white trash-inspired accessories (including a chainsaw) to a photo of themselves. As threatened last autumn, Sony's online streaming platform Crackle has seized the dubious opportunity of producing the first ever straight-to-digital sequel: a very belated follow-up to David Spade's 2001 cult comedy Joe Dirt. Now Joe Dirt 2: Beautiful Loser "finally" exists, and here's a teaser trailer to prove it. And look: they got Christopher Walken! The original Joe Dirt saw the titular drifter on the road, ostensibly looking for his parents but gradually adopting a new family of similar misfits. It was basically a lot like The Outlaw Josey Wales but without the shooting or the excellence. You won't glean this from the clip, but the sequel apparently involves time travel: Joe is somehow transported back to the recent past and undertakes a quest to get back to his happy family in the present. "Beautiful Losers" is also the title of a Leonard Cohen novel. Be sure not to get the two confused.

A week after Adam Sandler made his four picture deal with Netflix, his Saturday Night Live buddy David Spade teamed up with Happy Madison Productions and Crackle to produce a sequel that no one asked for… Joe Dirt 2. This will be the first digital sequel to a major motion picture. Why they chose make a sequel to Joe Dirt is beyond me. That was an awful film that I didn't think was funny at all, but apparently they feel there is a market out there for it.
The news comes from Deadline, who says that Spade will reprise his role as the moronic mullet-head character. The actor will also team up with former Saturday Night Live writer Fred Wolf to co-write and executive produce the film. Wolf will also direct it.
They are looking to start shooting the movie in mid-November on location in Louisiana, which is the backdrop for the first movie.

David Spade is developing a sequel to his 2001 comedy Joe Dirt.
The film will be released digitally via Sony's Crackle platform, with Spade reprising his role as the title character.
Spade said: "I'm beyond stoked that Joe Dirt will finally hit the screens again on Crackle.
"I've been sleeping in this wig for years and it will be nice to wear it in the daytime again."
In the first film, mullet-sporting Joe Dirt was down on his luck and went in search of the family that deserted him when he was 8 years old.
Originally, Spade was going to be producing an animated series based on the character.
He will be co-writing the sequel with former Saturday Night Live writer Fred Wolf, who will also be directing.

You may remember this past spring that David Spade revealed in a Reddit Ama that he was developing a wholly unnecessary sequel to the 2001 comedy Joe Dirt. But rather than hitting theaters, the film was going to be the first to be distributed by Sony Pictures' streaming video service Crackle, which is where Jerry Seinfeld's popular web series "Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee" can be found. Now Crackle has officially announced that Joe Dirt 2 will begin shooting next month with Spade also executive producing and co-writing the film again with Fred Wolf, the original film's co-writer, who will be directing the film too. There's no story details, but Crackle vaguely reveals the sequel will pick-up where the first film left off, following the comedic misadventures of the mullet-clad, lovable redneck.
