Timothée Chalamet is set to star in and produce Josh Safdie’s ping-pong drama ‘Marty Supreme.’
The movie is said to be inspired by professional ping-pong player Marty Reisman. Safdie and Ronald Bronstein will pen the film, while Eli Bush and Anthony Katagas will produce alongside them. The movie reunites Safdie with producer A24, which also distributed his last two features, ‘Uncut Gems’ and ‘Good Time.’
Reisman was a table tennis champion who started his career as a hustler in Manhattan, playing for bets and prize money. He won 22 major ping pong titles from 1946 to 2002 and won five bronze medals at the World Table Tennis Championships. At 67, he competed in the United States National Hardbat Championship and became the oldest player to win an open national competition in a racket sport. He died in 2012.

The idea that there is life beyond Earth is a commonly held belief. For director Gino McKoy, conversations with friends and family helped spur his willingness to investigate extraterrestrial phenomena. His new feature, Lumina, hit theaters on July 12th, 2024, and hopes to increase conversation about the topic. Lumina stars Eric Roberts, one of Hollywood’s hardest-working actors and a veteran of big and small-budget movies alike. McKoy and Roberts sat down with FandomWire to open up about Lumina and its importance in the discourse.

Eric Roberts remains one of the hardest-working actors in Hollywood. After breaking through in the mainstream with Bob Fosse’s Star 80, he became a character actor in the years that followed.

Timothée Chalamet (Dune franchise) is in final negotiations to produce and star in Marty Supreme, Josh Safdie’s new film for A24, Deadline has confirmed.
While plot details are being kept under wraps, the film reportedly is loosely inspired by pro ping pong player Marty Reisman. Ronald Bronstein and Safdie penned the script, with the pair to produce alongside Eli Bush, Anthony Katagas and A24. Previously seeing A24 produce his and brother Benny Safdie’s films Uncut Gems and Good Time, Josh’s most recent solo directorial effort prior to Marty Supreme was 2008’s The Pleasure of Being Robbed. He comes to the project on his own following the revelation not too long ago that he and his brother have split off to pursue solo directing careers, while continuing to produce together through their Elara Pictures.

This post contains spoilers for "Enemy."
"It was Hegel that said that all the greatest world events happen twice, and then Karl Marx added: the first time it was a tragedy, the second time it was a farce," says history professor Adam Bell (Jake Gyllenhaal) during a lecture session when he's first introduced in "Enemy." While these words seem innocuous with respect to untangling the complex web of themes in Denis Villeneuve's 2014 film, they're actually the key to the central mystery that grips the dual protagonists. Viewing "Enemy" through a singular lens might not give us all the answers — or satisfactory ones, for that matter — so let us tackle some of the biggest questions that seem to confound viewers once the credits roll.
To offer a brief, yet superficial recap: Adam, who seems discontent with his life's numbing monotony, stumbles upon a film featuring someone who looks exactly like him.

After writing his magnum opus, "Dune," Frank Herbert penned several science-fiction books, including 1986's "Man of Two Worlds," written in collaboration with his son, Brian Herbert. Although much more contained in scope and ambition than his "Dune" saga, "Man of Two Worlds" delved into the intriguing premise of human and alien minds, and how beautiful and disastrous it would be if one body were to house these warring identities. The collaboration between the two authors birthed a fascinating if somewhat shaky foundation for a world that could have been, weaving fantasy and satire into a story that feels both dense and nostalgic. Brian's involvement in his father's work is not limited to this — he kept the "Dune" legacy going by piecing together prequels and sequels based on his father's notes, penning companion pieces such as "Legends of Dune" and "Sandworms of Dune" over the years.

David Lynch is one of the most prominent filmmakers in the entire entertainment industry, renowned for how surreally he brings his pieces to life. With hits like Eraserhead and Mulholland Drive to his name, he has made sure to leave his audiences truly enchanted. But among all of those masterpieces, there have also been a few disappointments, like his version of Dune (1984).

While this particular live-action adaptation of Frank Herbert’s saga was indeed pretty flawed, it was still bearable. But the director has the harshest criticism for it, considering it a “total failure.” However, surprisingly enough, while he may not consider the 1984 film a worthy piece, Longlegs actress Alicia Witt does, and is even grateful to Lynch for having cast her in the respective movie.

It’s no secret that the Covid-19 pandemic upended the movie theater business in 2020, but in the years since, the industry has slowly climbed back. In 2021, 14 movies were able to cross the coveted $100 million mark at the U.S. box office. In 2022, that number jumped up to 18 films. And in 2023, there were a whopping 25 such blockbusters. So how many features released during the current 2024 calendar year will end up becoming box office behemoths? Stay tuned.
To date, the biggest money-makers of the year are a pair of highly anticipated sequels: “Inside Out 2” and “Dune: Part Two.” Scroll through our gallery above (or click here for direct access) to see all of the 2024 box office hits so far that made more than $100 million in the United States. The number will continue to grow as high-profile movies like “Wicked” and “Mufasa: The Lion King” will be released later in the year.

The capacity for sci-fi to pack imaginative exuberance, political richness, and sheer pulpy excitement into a dazzling cinematic adventure has been yielding masterpieces since the early days of the film medium, and it has allowed directors from Stanley Kubrick to Andrei Tarkovsky to Lizzie Borden to Denis Villeneuve to create some of their finest, most enduring work. At the same time, big-budget sci-fi can be a tough sell -- the greater the worlds and setpieces and ideas being put forth, the higher the risk of financial underperformance.
Unsurprisingly, film history is peppered with sci-fi movies that flopped upon release, only for them to be reappraised and re-emerge as cult favorites years later. That was true of Fritz Lang's "Metropolis," the grandfather of all go-for-broke sci-fi monuments, and it has been true of countless ambitious and unique cinematic visions in the century since. No matter how hard the movies below may have flopped,...

Now that "Dune: Part Two" has smashed box office milestones and assured the spice will keep flowing with "Dune 3," it seems the universe first created by author Frank Herbert will be part of our cultural landscape for some time. While we await Denis Villeneuve's next film adaptation, the real world is actually catching up with the futuristic tech of "Dune" -- specifically, with spacesuits that mimic the function of stillsuits from the novels and films.
In Herbert's 1965 novel "Dune," stillsuits are described as "a micro-sandwich — a high-efficiency filter and heat-exchange system." The suits, designed most effectively by the desert-dwelling Fremen people, allow wearers to traverse arid landscapes such as the planet Arrakis without running out of hydration. In the book, Herbert reveals that the suits not only recycle sweat, but that, "Urine and feces are processed in the thigh pads," so, yes, wearers are essentially drinking their recycled waste.

The Dune franchise has become a spectacular piece of cinema with Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of the Frank Herbert novels. Starring Timothee Chalamet, Rebecca Ferguson, Zendaya, and Florence Pugh among so many other actors, the expected trilogy is already two movies down, with one more in the works. But before Villeneuve changed people’s mind about the spice fields of Arrakis and the Empire, there were a few other tries to bring this story to life.
Timothée Chalamet and Austin Butler in Dune: Part Two | Legendary Pictures
The most successful of them, it terms of the audience getting a full length movie, was the one made by David Lynch. The 1984 adaptation of Dune was a critical and commercial failure, becoming one of the few films in David Lynch’s career that was not accepted by the people. As film writer Max Evry once said, it was the “black sheep of David Lynch’s filmography.

What Do We Know About Dune Prophecy? More than you may think. With the second part of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s classic science fiction novel a critical and box office success, it is going to be several years before we see the next feature film in the series, Dune Messiah. Luckily, production on the small-screen prequel /spin-off was concurrent with Dune: Part Two which means before the end of the year we are going to return to the fictional realms of Arrakis, Geidi Prime, and more via Max.
While not much in the way of footage has made its way online, there have been quite a few reveals about Dune Prophecy, so let’s jump in and discuss.

A third "Dune" movie is in the works from Legendary and director Denis Villeneuve, but it may be a while until it reaches audiences: The Hollywood Reporter recently shared the news that his next film is due in theaters December 2026, and it may not even be a "Dune" sequel. Cinema fans should get excited for any new project from the filmmaker who's also brought us movies like "Blade Runner 2049" and "Arrival," but sci-fi fans understandably can't wait to see the director return to the world of Arrakis.

The Batman star Zoë Kravitz will join Austin Butler in Aronofsky’s 90s-set New York thriller, Caught Stealing.
Zoë Kravitz is reportedly in talks to star opposite Austin Butler in Darren Aronofsky’s next project, Caught Stealing. Butler’s involvement in the project was announced back in March, just as Butler was riding high off the back of a lauded villainous turn in Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two. We haven’t heard much in the way of news since regarding the film, which is still in pre-production.
It looks like Aronofsky may have found his other lead for the film, however, with Kravitz is in advanced talks to join the production according to The Hollywood Reporter. The actor is in the midst of an impressive run herself, having made a splash as Selina Kyle in 2022’s The Batman before turning her attention to directing in the last couple of years.

In 2023, Hollywood star Chris Pratt lent his voice to the iconic character of Mario in the animated feature The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Adapted from the cult Nintendo video game franchise, the story of two Italian-American plumbers and their adventures in a fantasy world, became as big a rage as the original games and broke the $1 billion mark in no time along with other records.

But it now seems that Pratt’s film may have to give way to Pixar’s latest film Inside Out 2, which is ruling the box office following its release on June 14th. Along with creating the record for being the fastest animated film to cross the $1 billion mark, the movie has also earned a special place in the Pixar franchise, and is well on its way to surpassing...

The first trailer for Gladiator 2 has recently been released, and the digital Colosseum is already buzzing with differing opinions as Ridley Scott’s film promises to be a thundering spectacle.
The upcoming movie will not feature Russell Crowe’s character, Maximus, who died at the end of the previous installment. Rather, it will carry on Maximus’ legacy and concentrate on Paul Mescal’s Lucius Verus. Along with popular actor Pedro Pascal and Academy Award winner Denzel Washington, the sequel will also star Joseph Quinn.

Yet, despite the smorgasbord of sensational battles fit, there’s a discordant note in the symphony of chaos—a rap anthem by Jay-Z and Ye, No Church in the Wild—that sticks out like a sore thumb in ancient Rome.

It can seem that the science fiction genre went through a crisis right after the success of the Wachowskis’ Matrix in the 2000s. If we ask you to name at least 2 gems of the genre that were made in that decade, it’d probably be a problem recalling them.
However, it’d be unfair to say there weren’t decent sci-fi films at all, as back in 2009 the world saw a 90%-rated gem that is still recalled by Reddit. It is even getting dubbed ‘absolutely brilliant’ by fans who claim it’s still a must-watch for every sci-fi veteran.
Set in Johannesburg in 1982, it starts off by showing that a giant extraterrestrial spaceship lands there all of a sudden. It turns out that aliens are forced to stop on Earth not to conquer humankind, but because they’re sick and out of sustenance.

In 2010 the academy reintroduced the preferential ballot to decide the Best Picture winner. Over the ensuing 14 years, there has been a difference between the winners of that award and Best Director at six Academy Awards ceremonies. Prior to this such splits were fairly rare. Why the change? (Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Director.)
At the Oscars, the winner of Best Picture is determined by a weighted ballot and the outcomes of the other 22 races, including Best Director, are decided by a popular vote. While voters simply select one nominee in those other races, when it comes to Best Picture they are asked to rank all the nominees. If one contender garners more than 50% of the first-place votes, it wins. If, however, no nominee crosses that threshold, the film with the fewest first-place votes is eliminated, with its ballots being reapportioned to the second-place pick. This process...

Many fans fell in love with the real-world locations of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune movies. Villeneuve was not ready to use a set inside a studio and a lot of CGI effects to create his epic. He was not a fan of CGI even during his other futuristic fantasy film, Blade Runner 2049. During the promotion of the Ryan Gosling-led film, Villeneuve shared that he didn’t want his actors to walk on green screens.

Villeneuve’s attitude towards CGI is shared by many in the industry. These filmmakers would not be so fond of the near-$30 billion empire that Marvel has built from producing one CGI movie after the other.

Emily Blunt has landed a lot of fan-favorite roles and worked with a multiplicity of filmmakers and screenwriters throughout her career, with Taylor Sheridan being one of them since the pair worked on Sicario together. In fact, her iconic role of Kate Macer in this very movie was one that the studios wanted for a male actor.

Fortunately for her, all of this ended up in her favor in more than one way. For one, Blunt managed to score the role in the $85 million movie instead of letting herself get replaced by a male actor. For another, after getting cast in the role, she perfectly laid down her one demand on how she was going to play her character in that macho world which was effectively taken care of by the director.

Considering Todd Phillips’ DC sequel “Joker: Folie á Deux” is known to be jukebox musical that may or may not feature original songs as well, the casting of renowned pop singer and actress Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn should make a lot of sense, but in fact, didn’t at first to the person in charge.
As reported on by Deadline, speaking at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in the Czech Republic, “Joker: Folie á Deux” casting director Francine Maisler shared her thoughts on Gaga’s performance and how impressed she was by her work.
“She’s so good in it, you guys. She’s going to blow your mind. I didn’t suggest Lady Gaga. It wasn’t my idea. That was Todd Phillips, before me,” said Maisler. “But I will tell you, she’s really surprising — and really good. I saw it and I was really surprised.

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films are bursting with jaw-dropping set pieces, incredible imagery, and staggering scale, all while focusing on intense and complex characters in a story that challenges the archetypal hero's journey that provides the structure for so many classic tales. Taking inspiration from Steven Spielberg's "Jaws," Villeneuve's first entry in this franchise heavily teased the gigantic sandworms that live under the sand dunes of the planet Arrakis, rarely showing them in full and only giving us a glimpse at one character riding one as other characters look on from afar.
Naturally, one might come to the conclusion that Timothée Chalamet, who plays the main character of these films, Paul Atreides, would be fired up to hop on the back of the Shai-Hulud and ride the worm himself in "Dune: Part Two." But despite how amazing that scene ended up being (and the meticulous preparation that went into...

Actor Jon Bernthal has been gaining praise for his role as Michael Berzatto in the FX series The Bear. The comedy-drama has been garnering acclaim in its third season and Bernthal’s performance seems to be looming over every pivotal scene in the popular show.
Bernthal has proved his acting chops in multiple shows such as The Walking Dead and The Punisher. He has also worked with acclaimed directors in films such as Sicario, a crime drama written by Taylor Sheridan, in which he only had a few minutes of screen time.

It is an undeniable fact that Taylor Sheridan has gifted fans with some of the most cinematic Western experiences of all time, ones that would never cease to amuse their audiences. While his extraordinary directing and producing skills are one thing, he is also tremendously acknowledged for the beyond-exceptional plotlines he develops for his projects, as can be seen in his works.

And Costner’s choice is only understandable enough, especially while considering why the showrunner’s three most top-rated movies of all time are as famous and fan-favorite as they are.

Like the prophetic Bene Gesserit, director Denis Villeneuve always seems to have his mind partly in the future. When it comes to casting his "Dune" films, based on the novels by Frank Herbert, he's managed to hire some of the biggest stars in the world to play bit parts all by pointing to what comes next. While many actors would jump at the chance to work with Villeneuve or be in that kind of star-studded production, there's also a lot involved and smaller roles might not feel as rewarding for huge, busy stars. So how did he manage to get Florence Pugh to play Princess Irulan in "Dune: Part Two"? By promising her some great things for her future playing the character, all pointing to a third film based on "Dune Messiah."
Of course, this should sound pretty familiar to fans of the first two films who followed production, as...

The 2025 Oscars will be televised live on ABC on Sunday, March 2 next year while the nominations will be announced a couple of months earlier — on January 17. There is a hell of a long way to go until then, of course, but, for us here at Gold Derby, it’s never too late to start thinking about the next Academy Awards. With that in mind, here is a list of contenders we think could be potential Best Picture competitors, as well as all the information you need to know about them.
The 2025 Oscars is set for March 2, 2025 in its traditional home, the Dolby Theater. Films released theatrically from January 1 to December 31 of 2024 are eligible for consideration for the 97th annual Academy Awards. Scroll down for our updated 2025 Oscar predictions for Best Picture. (Only movies confirmed for release in 2024 are included; keep checking back as new contenders enter the race.)

Directed by Denis Villeneuve, 2015’s Sicario is one of the best action-thriller movies of all time. The film’s screenplay was penned by Taylor Sheridan, and it stars Emily Blunt as Kate Mercer, an FBI special agent on a mission to take down a Mexican drug cartel leader.

During an interview, Sheridan spoke about breaking several screenwriting conventions while penning the film. At the same time, he revealed one crucial detail that was nearly impossible to pull off, but credited Villeneuve with successfully executing it. Here is the one aspect of Sicario that Sheridan praised Villeneuve for pulling off.

Jon Bernthal has been a fan-favorite star for years due to his well-appreciated performances in critically acclaimed TV shows. Besides the small screens, he has also appeared in minor roles in some of the most renowned movies. Sadly, The Punisher fame is yet to reach the popularity he deserves, and it looks like not many fans are happy about it.

Dune: Part Two has been hailed as the best film of 2024 so far, according to a poll of over 100 critics. This highly anticipated sequel has captured the attention and praise of numerous film experts. Stunning Visuals Fostered by Denis Villeneuve A significant factor contributing to this acclaim is Denis Villeneuve’s exceptional direction. The film’s visual aesthetics, especially the depiction of the villainous Harkonnens, have been lauded for their unique and immersive quality. The sequences, often monochromatic and overexposed, create a foreboding atmosphere. This stylistic choice enhances the extraterrestrial feel of the film and sets it apart from other...

Let the speculation begin. The Untitled Event Film Warner Bros had dated for December 2026 now is being billed as a Denis Villeneuve Event Film, and sources said the studio and Legendary are holding the date with expectations that he wraps up the spectacular trilogy with Dune 3. Hurdles still have to be cleared as they’re still working on script and locking cast, but it is the project Villenueve has been working on. According to Villeneuve, the depth of Dune lies in how it tells a story about humanity through a future society alien in many respects. The studio and...

Michael Mann has followed in the footsteps of Martin Scorsese and joined Letterboxd, the social media site that allows cinephiles to log and rate the movies they’ve seen. The “Miami Vice” director quietly made an account and posted his first list, which is titled “14 Favorite Films in no particular order (except Potemkin).” After singling out Sergei Eisenstein’s landmark silent epic “Battleship Potemkin” as his favorite film of all time, he highlighted 13 other films ranging from classic film noir and New Hollywood masterpieces to recent hits like “The Hurt Locker” and “Poor Things.” Mann’s 14 favorite films can be found below.

For a certain type of film nerd (and lord knows I’m one), Michael Mann is a god. The man (Mann!) has directed some of the most potent, ultra-macho dramas and crime thrillers of the last forty-plus years, including a whole laundry list of classics, including Thief, Manhunter, The Last of the Mohicans, Heat, The Insider, Collateral, and many more. Plus, he’s the guy behind one of the greatest TV shows of all time, Miami Vice, and its underrated 2006 big-screen remake (to which we recently paid tribute). His influence can be felt in everything from Sam Levinson’s Euphoria to, shockingly enough, the films of Wes Anderson.
And now, Mann has joined the Mecca of film worship, Letterboxd, opening an account that includes a list of fourteen of his favourite movies. The selection is quite eclectic, including works from Sergei Eisenstein to Martin Scorsese, Guillermo del Toro, Denis Villeneuve,...

Note: This is not a ranking but rather a collection of 2024’s best movies so far.
10. Civil War — War Action
If you’ve ever wondered what may happen to our country if the divide worsens,
Alex Garland’s got you covered. Civil War revolves around exactly what you’ve already deduced from the title, following a group of army journalists on their journey across dystopian America as they try to reach the White House before the rebels.
9. Immaculate — Horror
For those of you starving for either good ol’ horrors or more Sydney Sweeney content, Michael Mohan released Immaculate. This movie is a story of a devout woman of faith who settles down in a seemingly peaceful new convent… Only to soon discover that its dark secrets leave no place for the faithful in a square mile.

Prime Video is not moving ahead with “Outer Range,” its sci-fi and neo-Western drama starring Josh Brolin. The drama premiered its second season in mid May.
The series came from Brian Watkins and was executive produced by Brolin, Charles Murray, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, Ernest McNealey, Tony Krantz, Heather Rae and Jon Paré.
“Outer Range” focuses on Wyoming rancher Royal Abbott (Brolin), a man who is fighting for both his land and his family. After the arrival of a mysterious drifter by the name of Autumn (Imogen Poots), a black void appears in his pasture. As this mystery unfolds, the Abbott family also has to juggle the disappearance of their daughter-in-law Rebecca as well as a long-standing feud with a rival family trying to take over their land, the Tillersons.

Alien and Blade Runner both spawned sequels, but filmamker Sir Ridley Scott wasn't behind the camera for them. James Cameron helmed the now-classic Aliens, with David Fincher later taking charge of the poorly-received, yet still fondly remembered, Alien 3.
As for Blade Runner, Dune director Denis Villeneuve took charge of Blade Runner 2049, a movie that proved to be a worthy follow-up to Scott's groundbreaking 1982 original.
Talking to Vanity Fair (via SFFGazette.com) about Gladiator II, Scott confirmed he was never asked to direct sequels to either movie or told about their development while it was happening. He blames that on being a relatively new filmmaker and having little interest in making follow-ups at the time.
"I was slow out the starting gate," Scott admits. "I mean, I should have done the sequels to 'Alien' and to 'Blade Runner.' You change over the years. At that time,...

Who will direct the next Bond film? David Michôd and Kelly Marcel are reportedly in contention, as well as All Quiet On The Western Front’s Edward Berger.
Yesterday came a report that Edward Berger, director of the horrors-of-war epic All Quiet On The Western Front, is among the names being considered for the next James Bond film.
To that list we can now reportedly add Kelly Marcel (pictured), who’s currently putting the finishing touches to this autumn’s Venom: The Last Dance, and David Michod, who broke through in 2010 with his acclaimed crime drama, Animal Kingdom.
This latest report comes from Jeff Sneider, who seconds World of Reel’s earlier story that Berger is currently being considered by Eon and producer Barbara Broccoli.

As the dust settles on the 2024 Academy Awards, industry insiders and film enthusiasts are already looking ahead to the 2025 Oscars. With the 97th Academy Awards ceremony scheduled for March 2, 2025, speculation is mounting about potential contenders in various categories, including Best Adapted Screenplay.
The landscape for adapted screenplays in 2025 appears to be a mix of high-profile sequels and literary adaptations. Despite the Writing branch’s historical hesitation to nominate sequels, several follow-ups to beloved films are generating early buzz.
“Inside Out 2,” the sequel to Pixar’s 2016 Oscar-winning animated feature, is considered a strong contender despite mixed critical reception. Its box office success and the original’s nomination history bolster its chances. Similarly, “Dune: Part Two,” which has outperformed its predecessor both critically and commercially, is likely to earn consideration for Denis Villeneuve and Jon Spaihts, who were previously nominated for the first installment.

Eddie Murphy cheerfully shoots his way through California’s wrong ‘uns in a charming revival of a 40-year-old franchise. Here’s our Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F review.
As the first Beverly Hills Cop movie to be released after its iconic theme was covered by Crazy Frog, Axel F perhaps lands on Netflix with more baggage than most.
It’s landing straight on Netflix, for a start, in a period where the streamer’s original output hasn’t been exactly glowing (Richard Linklater’s Hit Man being a notable exception). Action-comedy The Fall Guy just failed to set the box office alight, and after years of sequels, reboots, and sequel-reboots, it’s easy to imagine that we’re approaching peak franchise-fatigue. Was anyone really asking for a Beverly Hills Cop 4?
The answer might well be no, but, now that it’s here, I’m happy to report that Beverly Hills Cop...
