“Sing Sing” opened in limited release on July 12 after making the rounds on the film festival circuit, starting last fall at the Toronto International Film Festival. One of the year’s early Oscar contenders for Best Picture, it tells the story of a prison arts program that rehabilitates inmates at the titular prison. It remains to be seen how this story will resonate with awards voters, but we already know what critics have to say.
On Rotten Tomatoes, which classifies reviews simply as positive or negative, the film is rated 97% fresh based on 64 reviews. The Rt critics consensus says, “A moving celebration of art’s redemptive power, ‘Sing Sing’ draws its estimable emotional resonance from a never better Colman Domingo and equally impressive ensemble players.” And the movie merits a score of 81 on MetaCritic based on 20 reviews.

There’s a side of the U.K. that rarely gets screen time in cinema. We see the unreal, prettified version in films like Notting Hill and The Holiday, and we see the grittified version in classics like Lynne Ramsay’s “Ratcatcher” or Ken Loach’s “Kes.” Falling between two stools are the market towns and busy contemporary cathedral cities like York, where ancient architecture houses skincare brands like Kiehl’s. York is the setting for much of “Between the Lights,” a spiritually tinged romance which also dips into the nearby Lake District, including Keswick. The film duly opened the Keswick Film Festival this year, as well as playing Dances With Films in L.A., at which it won the jury prize.

Still Wake the Deep is a game that no one saw coming in 2024. It is a beautifully spun Lovecraftian tale mixed with the horror of 1982’s The Thing and some Ken Loach magic added in for good measure. Put simply, it is one of the best horror games and one of the best games overall this year.
Now, seeing what developer The Chinese Room was able to achieve with the game, the player base seems ready for them to take on and create their rendition of the worst nuclear disaster in our civilization’s history. To be honest, if any developer can pull off the horror of the Chernobyl incident, it is indeed only them.

When Nicole Holofcener was coming up in the ’90s, she was celebrated as that rare thing: a female writer-director. Today, she’s no longer a rarity, and she’s still delivering sharp, funny observational comedies about flawed middle-class New York women. But somehow, the breadth and potential of her talent remains elusive.
Hollywood gives her scripts to write and rewrite and polish (for the big bucks). She wrote, with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck, “The Last Duel” for Ridley Scott, crafting the Jodie Comer character, and the Scarlett Johansson and Florence Pugh roles in Marvel’s “Black Widow.” She made more on that three-week assignment than three of her movies combined, she said at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, which tributed her this year, playing three of her films for an audience unfamiliar with her work. She’s currently writing for Gillian Anderson and Greta Lee in Disney’s latest iteration of “Tron.

20 Days in Mariupol, Mstyslav Chernov’s harrowing and Oscar-winning documentary about the siege of the Ukrainian port city in the first days of Russia’s full-scale invasion, brought home the devastation wrought by war on a civilian population. A new documentary, Real, premiering at the Karlovy Vary international Film Festival, shows the reality of the Ukraine war from the soldier’s perspective.
Real begins without explanation or warning. We are suddenly in a foxhole, hearing the frantic voice of a soldier over the radio in another trench, under attack from Russian forces and in desperate need of reinforcements. The voice on our end — that of Real director Oleh Sentsov, call sign “Grunt” — is trying to organize the evacuation of troops under fire and the resupply of his unit. Ammunition is running out, and the Russian forces — uniformly referred to over the radio as “f**kers” — are closing in.

Still Wakes the Deep is a masterclass of emotional turmoil and existential horror, asking what John Carpenter’s The Thing would look like if it was set on a Scottish oil rig. Although many may look at Still Wakes the Deep as just another indie horror walking simulator, the stakes here were actually a lot higher for me given that I am Scottish and am a massive fan of the works that this game takes inspiration from like The Thing and the films of Ken Loach.
Thankfully, Still Wakes the Deep ranks a lot closer to Trainspotting than it does River City when it comes to comparing other Scottish media. This title really blew me away, mostly thanks to it impeccable presentation. From its solid voice acting, to its horrifying monster designs, to its brilliant writing, this experience gripped me in a way that no Aaa title has been able to in years.

CAA has signed Cash Carraway, the Irish-English writer, director and exec producer best known for creating the HBO series “Rain Dogs.”
Carraway’s first TV production, “Rain Dogs” — a bleak British dramedy about an unconventional relationship between a working-class single mother, her young daughter and a privileged gay man — was met with critical acclaim when it aired in March 2023. The eight-part series starred Daisy May Cooper, Jack Farthing, Ronkẹ Adékoluẹjo and Fleur Tashjian, and later earned a Gotham Award nomination for best breakthrough series, while Carraway was named a BAFTA Breakthrough.
Prior to working in TV, Carraway wrote “Skint Estate,” a darkly comic memoir chronicling her life as a single mother navigating impoverishment, loneliness and violence in austerity Britain, which was published by Penguin Random House in 2019. Ken Loach described it as “extraordinary,” adding that it “bursts with energy, wit and anger.” Carraway’s writing has been likened to that of Charles Bukowski,...

“Memoir of a Snail,” directed by Oscar winner Adam Elliot – and voiced by “Succession” star Sarah Snook – has debuted a teaser ahead of its premiere at Annecy.
The film is set as the opening title of the Melbourne International Film Festival in August and will have its Australian commercial release, via Madman, from Oct. 17.
In the film, little Grace Puddle is separated from her twin brother Gilbert following their parents’ deaths. Things only get worse from there, she later admits to a garden snail named Sylvia – the only creature interested in her tragic story.
“I gravitate towards the underdog. People who are perceived as different, marginalized. I am not interested in heroes. It’s probably because I am ultimately making films about myself. I really empathize and identify with my characters,” the director told Variety.
“The truth is, they are all based on real people: they just happen to be my family and friends.

Art print by Aleksander Walijewski for Poor Things. In the last roundup, from October, three out of the four most popular posters on my Movie Poster of the Day Instagram over the previous six months were posters for Yorgos Lanthimos’s Poor Things (2023)—two teasers and an official-release poster, all by the great Vasilis Marmatakis—which at that time was still almost two months away from its US theatrical run. So it's no surprise that the most "liked" poster since then is also a poster for Poor Things, an art print by the young, prodigiously talented Polish artist-designer Aleksander Walijewski. What was a surprise, however, is that this poster has racked up more than 10,000 likes since early February, making it by far the most popular poster ever on my Instagram, doubling its nearest competitor (Marmatakis’s original Poor Things teaser). And, making it feel as if Movie Poster of the...

Spoiler Alert: The following reveals plot points from season one of Netflix’s 3 Body Problem
Exclusive: Who is Thomas Wade? As humanity readies its response to the approaching San-Ti fleet in season one of 3 Body Problem, little is revealed in the Netflix series about the person apparently leading the effort to save humankind.
“This guy, the man who has tried to save humanity is probably the least human of all the characters that are that are in there,” Liam Cunningham, the Irish actor who plays Wade, tells Deadline.
The show’s creators, David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo, have just revealed 3 Body Problem will run to three seasons, allowing them to finish telling the story they are adapting from Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past trilogy of sci-fi novels. Season one spans time and space to show humans making contact with aliens, the San-Ti.

For many New Yorkers on the Upper West Side, the Marlene Meyerson Jcc Manhattan is a spot to play pickleball, grab a cup of coffee, or dump your kid off for a ceramics class. From June 4 through June 10, however, it will be the nexus of current Israeli cinema, hosting the 12th Annual Israel Film Center Festival. And considering what has transpired lately at Columbia University just a few subway stops away, it could make for some particularly lively post-screening Q&As.
Jcc stands for Jewish Community Center, and while you don’t have to be Jewish to go and use their pool, the vast Amsterdam Avenue facility is not not connected to Israel. In its lobby you’ll find a wall boasting “Jerusalem stone,” no shortage of Hebrew classes, and various lectures and symposiums concerning the Middle East.

Martin Scorsese’s war with Marvel seems to be over as filmmaker George Lucas recently revealed that the director might have eased his opinions about the MCU. The Departed filmmaker came under fire back in 2019 when he compared Marvel with theme park rides and said that they were not cinema, sparking controversy and a bunch of memes.
While the filmmaker was commenting on the lack of originality in Hollywood and how the only films getting made were superhero films, many fans took issue with him insulting their beloved franchise. However, the director seemed to have calmed down about the issue, according to George Lucas.

Barry Ward with Anna Bederke in That The May Face The Rising Sun. Ward: 'My approach to TV and film remains the same, though, in terms of research and preparation' Photo: Conic Adapted from John McGahern’s acclaimed novel of the same name and boasting a sweeping success at this year’s Irish Film and Television Awards, That They May Face The Rising Sun tells a gentle story of a couple who have relocated from London to the Irish countryside. As writer Joe (Barry Ward) rediscovers the rural life of his upbringing, the film ultimately settles on a stoic sentiment about finding peace in the mundane and the cyclical nature of life. Ward’s charisma adds to this stoicism, his warm performance imbuing the film with a quiet sense of ease and melancholia.

Generating robust admissions for UK independent film at the global box office remains a challenge, but the figures do not paint the complete picture of what marks a release as a success, according to Stephan De Potter, CEO at Benelux distributor Cineart.
De Potter was talking about the release of Georgia Oakley’s debut Blue Jean, a feature debut and Venice premiere that was backed by BBC Film and the BFI.
It garnered $357,412 at the box office outside of the UK, and $384,232 within the UK, according to Box Office Mojo.
“It was not great [in terms of admissions], but we were very happy,” said De Potter.

This one is for the true Lanthimites, the Dogtooth sisters, the biscuit women, The Killing of a Sacred Deer heads, a film to which the callbacks are so abundant that one can’t help but wonder what the connection is for writer-director Yorgos Lanthimos and co-screenwriter Efthimis Filippou behind the scenes, outside of simply sharing tones and themes that all of their other films share. Regardless, the director as we knew him pre-Emma Stone is back (relatively speaking). And this time… with Emma Stone!
In his eighth feature, old and new Lanthimos merge, the former reflected in story scope, unreal realism, and bone-dry Greek comedy, all wrapped up in the much-felt return of Filippou, with whom he last wrote Sacred Deer just before he launched into the Hollywood stratosphere with Tony McNamara and The Favourite, the dawn of his Emma Stone collaboration-turned-creative-partnership. Kino Lorber is expanding its streaming footprint. The boutique art-house distributor just launched its own SVOD platform, the Kino Film Collection.
The new app is available now as a standalone service on Apple TV, Fire TV, Android TV, and Roku, and it will feature hundreds of movies from Kino Lorber’s film library of more than 4,000 titles. Subscriptions will begin at $5.99 per month.
In November 2023, Kino Lorber launched an Amazon Prime Video channel; you can still access its titles there. But having its own service puts the company in the race alongside other niche streaming options in the space, like the Criterion Channel ($10.99/month) or Mubi ($14.99/month).
As part of the launch, Kino Film Collection curated a selection of titles that showcase auteurs who have played at Cannes; the 2024 film festival is currently ongoing. The collection includes early movies from Yorgos Lanthimos, Jia Zhangke, and Ken Loach, as well as...

Smells Like Entrepreneurial Spirit!: Courvoisier Climbs Up the Totone Poll
In her directorial debut, Louise Courvoisier delves into themes of altruism and resilience, navigating a narrative that straddles the line between a troubled past and an uncertain future. Bill Murray has joined the already-stacked cast of director Dito Montiel’s upcoming crime comedy Riff Raff. More details below.
Dito Montiel’s crime comedy Riff Raff has set up quite a cast. Jennifer Coolidge, Ed Harris, Gabrielle Union, Lewis Pullman, Emanuela Postacchini, Miles J Harvey and Pete Davidson are all set to appear, and the film has just added another star to its ranks.
Bill Murray, who was just seen in Ghostbusters: The Frozen Empire, will also appear in Riff Raff, Variety reports.
According to the same article, Riff Raff – not to be confused with the 1991 Ken Loach film of the same name – follows a former criminal, whose ordinary life is turned upside down when his family shows up for a “long-awaited reckoning”. John Pollono, whose work takes in Grey’s Anatomy, Masters Of Sex, and the 2021 indie comedy Small Engine Repair, has written the script.

There’s a certain formula that often defines the recipients of the Cannes Film Festival’s prestigious top prize, the Palme d’Or. These films, especially in the last two decades, tend to have a sense of importance about them, frequently due to their sociopolitical awareness of the world (Laurent Cantet’s The Class), or of specific societal ills.
From time to time, the Palme d’Or goes to a bold, experimental, and divisive vision from a well-liked auteur, such as Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Uncle Boonmee Who Can Recall His Past Lives and Terrence Malick’s The Three of Life. But more often it’s awarded to a film in the lineup that the majority of the members on the Cannes jury can agree is good. That felt like the case for Ken Loach’s The Wind that Shakes the Barley and I, Daniel Blake, as well as Julia Ducournau’s Titane,...

Laurent Cantet's Palme d'Or winner The Class Photo: UniFrance The French director Laurent Cantet who struck gold at the Cannes Film Festival in 2008 with the Palme d’Or winner, The Class, has died at the age of 63.
Laurent Cantet Photo: Veeren Ramsamy for UniFrance The film was based on the novel Entre les murs which was a semi-autobiographical account of the author François Bégaudeau's own experiences in the school system in Paris - and featured him in the lead role of the teacher confronting “problem children.”
Beside the Palme d’Or the film also was nominated for an Oscar as Best Foreign Language Film.
Cantet was a filmmaker who showed a lively interest in social issues and themes, often used non professional actors and took a naturalistic approach to his subjects. His kindred spirits would be Ken Loach and the Dardenne Brothers as well as the traditions of Roberto Rossellini and Robert Bresson.

Jane Campion, director of “The Power of the Dog,” is the recipient of this year’s Pardo d’Onore Manor at the Locarno Film Festival — its award for outstanding achievement in cinema. So yes, the “Dog” director is getting a cat trophy: Pardo d’Onore translates to “Leopard of Honor” in English.
The award will be bestowed on August 16, 2024 at the 77th edition of the festival. Locarno will also feature screenings of two Campion movies as selected by the director herself: 1990’s “An Angel at My Table” and 1993’s “The Piano.” It will be a brand new 4K restoration of “The Piano” that audience in Switzerland sees.
It’s quite an honor, but certainly not Campion’s first big award. She was the first woman to win the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival (for “The Piano”). Campion is also the first woman to be nominated twice for...

Champion’s “An Angel at My Table” (1990) and “The Piano” (1993) – the latter presented in a new 4K restoration – have been selected as Locarno’s tribute screenings.
“Jane Campion’s biography is a succession of remarkable firsts,” the fest noted in a statement, citing the facts that Campion is the first woman to win the Cannes Palme d’Or for “The Piano”; the first woman to get nominated twice in the best director category at the Academy Awards – winning once for “The Power of the Dog” in 2021 –; and the first filmmaker from New Zealand to compete at the Venice Film Festival...

Updated: The Cannes Film Festival will have an admirable UK and Irish presence in 2024, including three films from Dublin, London and Belfast-based production company Element Pictures, Andrea Arnold’s Bird in Competition and features from fresh talents Sandhya Suri and Rungano Nyoni, as well as Sister Midnight in Directors’ Fortnight.
Competition is still proving a tricky spot to land for UK or Irish directors. In 2022, none made the cut, while in 2023, UK filmmakers Ken Loach and Jonathan Glazer made it through with The Old Oak and The Zone Of Interest respectively.

The Cannes Critics’ Week, the parallel film festival sidebar organized by the French film critics’ union, has unveiled its 2024 selection.
The psychological thriller Ghost Trail, the first feature from acclaimed French shorts director Jonathan Millet, will open the 2024 sidebar. Adam Bessa (star of 2022’s Un Certain Regard winner Harka) plays the lead in the manhunt drama about a man pursuing his former torturer, using only his sensory memories to guide him.
The competition lineup includes Brazilian drama Baby from director Marcelo Caetano, a portrait of a young outsider growing up in São Paulo; Constance Tsang’s Blue Sun Palace, which looks at the lives of Chinese immigrants in Queens; and the Egyptian/French/Danish/Qatari/Saudi Arabian drama The Brink of Dreams about a group of girls from the disenfranchised Christian Copts who defy tradition and set up an all-female street theater troupe.

Cinema for Gaza, a group launched by a small group of female filmmakers and film journalists, has successfully raised more than $315,000 to support medical aid for the civilian population in Gaza.
A celebrity auction, organized by Cinema for Gaza, and supported by the likes of Tilda Swinton, Annie Lennox, Joaquin Phoenix, Spike Lee and Guillermo del Toro, raised some $316,778 (£254,297) for Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map), a U.K.-based charity that provides on-the-ground medical support, from sterile water to cancer drugs, for those on the Gaza Strip. The celebrities donated personal items — from signed film posters to personal Zoom chats to, in the case of Lennox, the handwritten lyrics to her Eurythmics hit “Sweet Dreams” — to be sold off to the highest bidder. (Lennox’s lyrics sheet was the top seller, with a bidder paying $26,222 for the piece of pop music history).

Ramsay’s brilliant rendering of a child’s experience during the 1975 Glasgow bin-collectors’ strike, spiked with a horrifying twist of fate, remains masterly
Twenty-five years ago, we saw one of the most impressive debut features in modern British movie history. Ratcatcher, by the 29-year-old Glasgow film-maker Lynne Ramsay, was a visually haunting, passionate piece of work to compare with Terence Davies or Ken Loach and which set a gold standard of artistry for new social realist cinema – or cinema of any sort – in the UK. I remember how blown away I was when I saw it at the Edinburgh film festival, especially by the rippling, sunlit fields at which a troubled child gazes, framed by the doorway of the half-built council house development outside Glasgow. (Only now does it occur to me to wonder if Ramsay was influenced by John Ford.)

Update: More than 300 Jewish creatives — including eight-time Oscar-winning composer Alan Menken, “SNL” star Sarah Sherman, actor and documentarian Alex Winter and “Seinfeld” writer Larry Charles — have added their names to the list of signatories of an open letter in support of Jonathan Glazer’s Oscars speech.
The number of signees now sits at 492, having more than tripled since Variety first published the April 5 letter, which criticized the attacks on Glazer for being a “dangerous distraction” from the mounting death toll in Gaza while also contributing to the “suppression of free speech and dissent.”
New additions also include Oscar-winning “Anatomy of a Fall” co-writer Arthur Harari, veteran U.K. producer and Oscar winner Jeremy Thomas, “Girls” co-showrunner and co-writer Jenni Konner and “The Hunger Games” writer and director and four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross. Many members of the Israeli film community have also signed the open letter, including Oren Moverman, Nadav Lapid,...

In a career that spans over half a century, the indefatigable Ken Loach has cemented his reputation as the foremost filmmaker of the British working class. At 87, he’s out of neither steam nor ideas even as he signals that his latest, The Old Oak, might be his final film.
The Old Oak makes for quite the cherry on top of a splendid body of work, most of which will be featured in a career-spanning retrospective in spring 2024 at New York City’s Film Forum. This sympathetic and socially attuned portrayal of the proletariat set in a dying village in northeast England is part three in an informal trilogy with 2016’s I, Daniel Blake and 2020’s Sorry We Missed You. While those films focused on post-austerity holes in the social safety net and the precariousness of the gig economy, respectively, the contemporary issue under Loach’s microscope in The Old Oak...

Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker – which was pulled from TIFF in 2022 over “rights issues” — starts a theatrical debut today at the IFC Center, moving to LA’s Landmark’s Nuart next weekend and expanding thereafter with about 85 booking so far — a nice outcome for the mixed-media coming-of-age dark superhero parody that “had gone into into hibernation mode” until Outfest LA Film Festival, said Frank Jaffe, whose distribution company Altered Innocence acquired it then. It’s U.S premiere garnered a Special Mention in the North American Narrative Feature Competition.
Co-written by Drew and Bri LeRose, the film is a reimagining the origin story of iconic Batman villain The Joker, starring Drew as painfully unfunny aspiring clown and closeted trans girl grappling with her gender identity while unsuccessfully attempting to join the ranks of Gotham City’s sole comedy program, in a world where comedy has been outlawed. Drama In UK Drama ‘This Is Going to Hurt’
Antitrust the process: Not great news for the UK’s fabled TV drama community this week as we brought news that the antitrust investigation spooking producers will be prolonged for at least six months – and likely far longer. A reminder: the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) probe is examining whether BBC Studios, ITV Studios and four other storied indies colluded by informally fixing freelancers’ wage rates. The extension will see the CMA implement “further investigatory steps” and assessment of evidence” for the next six months, and those Max spoke with said the authority has an enormous wealth of evidence to get through. “Stressed” and “jittery” was the vibe described by one connected source about those being probed, who now face months...

Spanish director Rodrigo Sorogoyen (Stockholm, The Realm, Madre, The Beasts), who was nominated for the best international film honor at Italy’s David Di Donatello Awards, has been named jury president of this year’s Cannes Critics’ Week, the festival sidebar run by the French film critics union that focuses on first and second features from up-and-coming directors.
In a social media clip shared Friday, Sorogoyen called the jury duty “a great responsibility.”

A Tree Grows in England: Loach Loses Steam in Klutzy Refugee Drama
There’s no doubt Ken Loach is one of the most prominent social-realist directors of his time, navigating the plight of poverty (most often) amongst Britain’s working class across a variety of eras, situations, and themes. For six decades, he’s delivered quiet, unassuming dramas which are often bolstered by moving performances, many from first time actors who are unforgettable (like Crissy Rock in 1994’s Ladybird Ladybird). Jonathan Glazer has kept a low profile since his controversial 2024 Oscars acceptance speech.
But The Zone of Interest filmmaker has resurfaced to donate seven signed posters for his Oscar-winning movie, as well as a selection of posters for his 2014 film Under the Skin, to the Cinema for Gaza auction that is raising funds for the charity Medical Aid for Palestinians (Map).
“We are moved beyond words to feature donations from Jonathan Glazer and his co-creators on the most confronting film of our time, The Zone of Interest,” the auction organizers stated on the online site.
The film posters, donated by Glazer and Zone of Interest producer James Wilson, have so far drawn a bid for £2750.00 ($3,462.20), with the auction to end on April 12. The posters will be signed by Glazer, composer Mica Levi and Wilson.
