Dakota Johnson received the thumbs-up from viewers as paparazzi photos of her Miami Beach day were published in April 2017. Soaking up the East Coast sunshine, the Madame Web star flaunted her sensational figure in a stylish red bikini, and it didn't take long for fans to compliment her. Enjoying golden sands and hanging out near a row of blue-cushioned loungers, Dakota drew the eye to her fit figure as she chilled out on the shorefront, and the most-liked reply to The Daily Mail's photos comes from a fan going nuts over her incredible "body." Elsewhere in the comments, the sentiment manifested from a fan dubbing Dakota as having the "perfect body."

Dakota Johnson’s involvement in Sony’s Madame Web was indeed an unforgettable experience after she realized it was not a franchise suited for her. The movie received a lot of backlash from fans, but that does not mean the actress has lost her fan base. In fact, she has a strange one that is too bizarre to comprehend.

Emma Roberts, who appeared alongside Dakota Johnson in this year’s Madame Web, has defended the superhero thriller.
Released in February, Sony’s vaguely Spider-Man-related superhero thriller Madame Web had such obvious signs of reshoots and general re-tailoring that we’ve been scratching our heads over it ever since.
The critically derided film does have one strident fan, though: Emma Roberts, who plays one Mary Parker – a woman pregnant with a baby whom the movie seemingly can’t name for legal reasons.
Roberts, who’s currently promoting her new comedy Space Cadet, told Variety, “I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought that everyone in it was great. The director, Sj Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She’s the reason I wanted to do that movie.”
The actor then said that the film’s reception wasn’t necessarily due to its own flaws,...

Madame Web Star Emma Roberts Blames Internet Memes for Movie's Box Office Failure - Main Image
Madame Web star Emma Roberts recently weighed in on the movie's box office failure and how the memes may have contributed to its performance.
The Sony's Spider-Man Universe (Ssu) movie notably became a major box office and critical flop when it was released earlier this year, and it was already considered to be one of the worst comic book movies of all time.
It was also the subject of ridicule online as fans created memes and jokes that poked fun at the film and an infamous line from the trailer became a punchline due to Dakota Johnson's deadpan delivery.

Emma Roberts, star of the Sony Spider-Man Universe film “Madame Web,” has spoken out about the impact of internet meme culture on the movie’s reception. In a recent interview with Variety, Roberts expressed her disappointment with how online trolling and joke-making affected the film’s potential success.
Roberts, who played Mary Parker in the movie, stated, “If it wasn’t for internet culture and everything being made into a joke, I think that the reception would’ve been different. And that’s what bums me out about a lot of stuff, even stuff that I’ve done, is people just make such a joke out of everything now.”
The actress defended the film, saying she personally enjoyed it and praised the work of director S.J. Clarkson and her co-stars. Roberts emphasized the unpredictable nature of the film industry, noting that sometimes unexpected projects become hits while others fall short despite their quality.

The time for debates and dissent around Superhero Fatigue is over and it’s high time the fans admitted that the global symptom is trying to tell us something. Steve Carell’s latest animated dooblydoo, Despicable Me 4 has just shattered the box office expectations of 2024 by a mile and a half, and Marvel is yet to impress its viewers with a half-decent movie worthy of its reputation.

Taking a bold stance to challenge the prevailing narrative surrounding “nepo babies” in the entertainment industry, Julia Roberts’ niece Emma Roberts became a vocal advocate for the conversation. Sitting down for an interview with the magazine Flaunt, the Madame Web actress attempted to reshape the idea about individuals with familial ties to established Hollywood figures.

“Madame Web” was released a few months ago to a lukewarm critical reception and low audience rating, typical of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe movies. The film was a notable box office bomb, though it did achieve moderate success on Netflix, driven by the memes and online chatter it generated.
Cast members like Dakota Johnson and Sydney Sweeney have already commented on the movie’s performance. Johnson criticized the studio executives for meddling with the film, attempting to make it appeal to everyone. She made it clear that the final script was not the one she had originally agreed to shoot.
Johnson found herself in hot water with the studio, but she didn’t seem to mind, stating that she would never do something like that again. Sweeney, on the other hand, took a more stoic approach, claiming she was just an actress in the movie and even poked fun at it during an SNL sketch.

Sony’s set take of the Spider-Man property was meant to be a web-slingin’ smash from the studio, bringing elements that the MCU didn’t — it even had its own acronym: the Ssu. But this hasn’t quite panned out as intended, with one particular entry, Madame Web, proving to be a colossal disaster. And while it holds an 11% Rotten Tomatoes critics score, a still lousy 57% audience score and a 5/10 from our own Chris Bumbray, the movie has its small legion of defenders. Take star Emma Roberts, for example, who maintains that the internet may have been responsible for ruining any hope for the movie.
On Madame Web, Roberts said that she remains enthusiastic about it despite the loudness of naysayers. “I personally really loved Madame Web. I really enjoyed the movie. I thought everyone in it was great. The director, S.J. Clarkson, I think did an amazing job. She...

Amid the ongoing superhero fatigue, films like Matt Reeves’ The Batman reigned supreme, while Marvel’s Madame Web found itself tangled in a web of unexpected challenges. Starring Dakota Johnson, although the movie was poised to spin box office gold, it unfortunately crashed over a wave of internet mockery and empty theater seats.

Emma Roberts played the brief role of Mary Parker in Dakota Johnson’s Ssu film, Madame Web. While Johnson understood her mistake of accepting the role in the poorly made film, Roberts defended it. It's probably fair to say that Madame Web always had a pretty steep hill to climb after becoming meme-fodder immediately after the release of its first (and only) trailer, but right from the opening scene with Cassie Webb's (Dakota Johnson) mother in the Amazon researching spiders just before she died, it seemed clear that Sony Pictures' latest Ssu movie was most likely not going to be a massive hit!
To be fair, the movie did end up surpassing (just about) the $100 million mark worldwide, but with a reported budget of around $80 - $100 million, and an abysmal 11% on Rotten Tomatoes, we can't imagine seeing much more from Miss Web and her teenage Spider-Women pals anytime soon.
Some felt the movie wasn't quite as bad as it was made out to be, while others were of the opinion that it crossed into so bad it's good territory, and a few even loved it.

Dakota Johnson Spoke Out About “Psychotic” ‘Fifty Shades Of Grey’ Author’s On Set Demands. (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Dakota Johnson is one of Hollywood’s leading actresses. She made her on-screen debut in the 2010 Oscar-winning film Social Network. Johnson gained mainstream recognition after being cast as Anastasia Steel in 2015’s Fifty Shades of Grey, based on E.L. James’s novel of the same name.
The franchise, which included three films, grossed $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office. However, the film’s success came with its own baggage, replete with on-set feud rumors. The rumors were not addressed until seven years after the release of the first Fifty Shades of Grey movie.
In 2022, Dakota Johnson spoke to Vanity Fair about the creative clashes on set, saying if she could only portend how “psychotic” things would turn out, she would not have signed on to do the movie.

The release of Deadpool & Wolverine is just around the corner and we could not be more excited. From what we have seen and heard so far, we have absolutely no doubt that the film is going to break records left and right, and revive the theatres this month. Starring Ryan Reynolds and Hugh Jackman, Deadpool 3 is on track to become Marvel Cinematic Universe’s next best thing.

We are convinced that Ryan Reynolds and Shawn Levy worked together to find the perfect story for Deadpool’s entry into the MCU. However, there was a time when they were struggling to come up with a story and that’s when Ryan Reynolds suggested an absurd plotline involving Karan Soni’s Dopinder that would have ruined the film and placed it below Madame Web.

However, there was a time when they were struggling to come up with a story and that’s when Ryan Reynolds suggested an absurd plotline involving Karan Soni’s Dopinder that would have ruined the film and placed it below Madame Web.

Sean Penn rarely grants interviews — he and the press haven’t always gotten along, to say the least — but last week, at his home in Malibu, the venerated actor and filmmaker sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast for an in-depth conversation about his life, career and most recent project, Daddio, an indie, released last Friday, of which he is particularly proud.
Seated in a small, light-filled room that he recently re-designed himself, the walls of which are covered with photos of his late parents, his two children and himself alongside many of world figures he has encountered in his travels as an activist, Penn, sporting a shock of white hair, puffed on cigarettes, spoke softly and was far warmer than his reputation would suggest he’d be. At 63, thrice divorced and currently single, he seems to have found a measure of peace — at least when one...

Sony’s comic book film Madame Web launched to derision in February. We take a look at what went wrong with a potentially interesting thriller…
Spoilers lie ahead – and lots of them – for Madame Web.
Much has already been written about Sony’s Spider-Man-adjacent calamity Madame Web following its initial cinema release on the 14th February this year. But because of the breakneck pace the modern cultural world moves at, it already feels as though the conversation has moved on; director Sj Clarkson’s comic book supernatural thriller made its streaming debut in May and barely made a ripple.
This is unfortunate, because number one, Madame Web deserves some sort of cult status for its sheer oddness. And number two, it deserves to be studied as a cautionary example of what not to do if you want to tell a coherent, engrossing story.
So what’s wrong with Madame Web,...

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on “The Morning Mess” with Scott Thompson on Wbgr-fm on June 27th, reviewing new films “Daddio,” with Dakota Johnson and Sean Penn, and the A24 release “Janet Planet.” Both in theaters since June 28th.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
In “Daddio,” Dakota Johnson is a woman, coming into JFK International Airport in New York City, and gets a cab with the driver man (Sean Penn). During the journey into midtown Manhattan, they start to get to know each other, and the conservation becomes observational and philosophical. When a bad accident delays their journey, several breakthroughs are made, and several undeniable truths create some discomfort. The truth does hurt, but it also can set you free.

Glastonbury was a bustling family affair for Chris Martin as his partner, Dakota Johnson, joined him along with his children, Apple and Moses Martin. The group was captured on camera in the VIP section, cheering on Coldplay during their headlining set at the iconic UK music festival on June 29. Dakota Johnson, who was described as ‘like any other couple’ with Chris Martin, sported a fashionable look with a Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band T-shirt, beige pants, and black loafers. Here at FandomWire, we review the new action spectacular Kill (2023) starring Lakshya, and this article is spoiler-free.
Sometimes, a film star can come out of nowhere and knock you off your feet. In the Indian Hindi-language action thriller Kill, Lakshya is that man. A relative unknown, he has burst onto the scene with his granite jaw, perfect five-o’clock shadow, and a thick head of hair that hardly bristles as he caves someone’s chest in with a powerful kick or cracks a skull with an iron fist.
After watching Kill, viewers may enjoy the adrenaline-pumping, bone-crunching, knuckle-busting, and lip-splitting escapism. The type that drags its villains across some cheap train carpet, leaving the taste of rug burn in their mouths and shards of glass in their foreheads.

Dakota Johnson and Ro Donnelly’s production company, TeaTime Pictures, has turned a corner. Following films like Cha Cha Real Smooth and Am I Ok?, they’ve now delivered Daddio, changing how Hollywood views them as a production powerhouse. “When we started, people were very skeptical of us,” said Donnelly. “They really were like, ‘Okay, little girls.'” Dakota Johnson echoed this sentiment,There were a lot of belittling comments about the industry. Michael J. Fox had a “f*cking mind blowing” time performing with Coldplay at the 2024 Glastonbury Festival on Saturday.
The actor and Parkinson’s activist played guitar on the band’s hit “Fix You” during the group’s headlining set at the U.K. music festival last night.
On Instagram on Sunday, Fox thanked Coldplay’s team and bandmembers Chris Martin, Will Champion, Johnny Buckland and Guy Berryman, as well as manager Phil Harvey.
“There is a time for every band and a band for every time,” Fox wrote alongside a carousel of photos, including one with members of his team and him sitting in a wheelchair in front of an “optimism is a political act” sign. “This is @coldplay’s time.”
Fox also shared a photo of a sign reading “Coldplay special guest” and a short video of the band backstage.

“Inside Out 2” (Disney) in its third week will gross $57.4 million, with “A Quiet Place: Day One” (Paramount) estimating $53 million. The last time two films grossed over $50 million on the same weekend was last July, when “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer” opened. Before that? 2017.
This is rare because distributors like to space out films with this potential. Even though it’s not a direct competitor, Paramount likely opted to open its prequel two weeks after Pixar. No one expected “Inside Out 2” to be this strong at this point ($469 million domestic after only 17 days).
This is summer the way it’s supposed to be. Three films opened to over $50 million over four weeks, and “Despicable Me 4” (Universal) opening Wednesday should make it four over five weeks. It justifies more optimism for the future than we’ve had for a long time.
That’s reason to be pleased, but not rapturous. Last year,...

Two Indian films flexed at the domestic box office — and when they hit they really do hit, buoying exhibitors through good times and bad — with Kinds Of Kindness hitting no. 10 in a major expansion and Thelma not far behind.
Kalki 2898 Ad, a Telugu sci-fi epic from Prathyangira Cinemas, is looking at an estimated $5.4 million on 1,049 screens for the three-day weekend, at no. 5. It’s also approaching a cume of $11 million including Wednesday previews and Thursday opening day, one of the best ever openings of an Indian film in North America.
Written and directed by Nag Ashwin, Kalki is toplined by superstars Prabhas with Deepika Padukone and Amitabh Bachchan. As Deadline has reported, this is India’s most expensive film ever.
Jatt & Juliet 3, the latest instalment of the Punjabi romantic comedy franchise, from White Hill Studios, is at no. 9 with $1.8 million for the weekend at just 143 locations, and a $1.9 million cume,...

Things had been looking up for the entire month of June, and they ended on a high note with two movies making more than $50 million this weekend, the first time that’s happened since “Barbenheimer” last summer. Read on for the weekend box office report.
Despite the introduction of a new prequel to a popular franchise, Pixar’s animated sequel “Inside Out 2” held onto the top spot with another $57.4 million, down 43% from last weekend. Last week, “Inside Out 2” crossed the $400 million mark ahead of the weekend, and this weekend’s take helped push it to $469.3 million, a showing that’s on par with last year’s “Barbie” and “The Super Mario Bros. Movie.” We’ll have to see if “Despicable Me 4” opening domestically on Wednesday puts the brakes on Pixar’s latest hit, though it won’t have any problem getting to $500 million and more.

Chris Hemsworth’s Last 5 Films At The Worldwide Box Office(Photo Credit – Instagram)
Chris Hemsworth is an Australian actor who is part of some of the highest-grossing Hollywood films owing to his role as the God of Thunder, Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, aka MCU. His much-anticipated movie Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga was released in May this year but felt to create the magic as much as the hype. He played a negative role in this George Miller-helmed dystopian saga. He is an established actor in the action genre who has given a few hits and flops in the past few years. Here’s a brief look at the Marvel star’s last five movies at the worldwide box office.

With a setup almost entirely contained within the confines of a New York City taxicab, Daddio, directed by Christy Hall, takes a bold narrative risk. Though boasting the star power of Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson, the film aims for a poignant, real-to-life portrayal but struggles to maintain momentum throughout its 1 hour 41 minutes runtime. A Luminary Cast in a Stagnant Story Despite an uninspired script, both Penn and Johnson manage to inject emotional depth into their roles. Penn portrays Clark, a gritty cab driver whose rough-edged exterior is a contrast to Johnson’s character, Girlie – a sophisticated young...

In her directorial debut, Christy Hall, the showrunner of Netflix’s teen supernatural drama I Am Not Ok With This, takes the taxi-connection concept and extends it into a full-length feature. The two-hander is a showcase for Dakota Johnson, who over the past few years, has grown into a fine actor. Taxi Driver and New Yorker’s Heart-to-Heart Sean Penn co-stars as a lone-wolf taxi driver and old-guard New Yorker who picks up Johnson’s character, Girlie, from JFK. On their ride to Brooklyn, they engage in an open conversation about life, love, sex, relationships, and more. Penn’s character has a blunt and...

Writer/director Christy Hall’s “Daddio” follows, in real-time, a 90-minute NYC cab ride from JFK airport to 44th Street between 9th and 10th Avenues. During that period, the camera rarely leaves the taxi as driver Sean Penn and passenger Dakota Johnson get to know each other during an extended conversation that yields surprising revelations for both the characters and the audience. The strength of Hall’s dialogue is not surprising given her background as an acclaimed playwright, but what really makes “Daddio” work is the way the performances are served by the visual style, as the lights and colors of New York City play off of the actors’ faces in a hypnotic, almost musical fashion; Phedon Papamichael‘s dreamy cinematography keeps the city alive as a character outside without ever detracting from the emotional intimacy of what’s going on inside the cab.

Plot: A woman (Dakota Johnson) and a talkative cabbie (Sean Penn) have a deep conversation while stuck in an endless New York traffic jam.
Review: A few months ago, Dakota Johnson suffered the worst reviews of her career for her superhero flop Madame Web. She’s been open about how she’ll never do anything like that again due to how badly she felt burned by its reception, doubling down on her commitment to indie fare. Indeed, if you watch Dakota Johnson in Daddio, a movie she co-produced, you can see how effective she can be if given material that suits her.
Written and directed by Christy Hall, Daddio is a two-hander one that takes place entirely in a cab travelling from JFK International Airport to an apartment in Manhattan. The film revolves around Johnson’s unnamed passenger, billed as “girlie,” a young woman returning to New York after a trip to see her sister.

Sean Penn had been “miserable” at work since 2008 — and then “Daddio” came along.
Penn told the New York Times that 2008’s “Milk” was the “last time I had a good time” making a feature, prior to his new indie film with co-star and producer Dakota Johnson.
“I went 15 years miserable on sets,” Penn said. “‘Milk’ was the last time I had a good time.”
The infamously candid star continued, “I feel like an actor who is playing a leading role and is a known actor and is being paid well has a leadership position on a film and you’ve got to show up with energy and be a bodyguard for the director in some way. I was faking my way through that stuff and that was exhausting. Mostly what I thought was just, ‘What time is it? When are we going to get off?'”

The indie market is feeling pretty good. A big film from India Kalki 2898 Ad may unseat Rrr’s North American opening weekend. June Squibb-starrer Thelma is blowing through midweek shows and stands at $3.75 million heading into week 2 steady at 1,280 theaters. Searchlight Pictures Kinds Of Kindness by Yorgos Lanthimos (Poor Things) starring Emma Stone and Jesse Plemons jumps to 500 screens from five after the best limited opening of the year last weekend.
Annie Baker’s Janet Planet from A24 goes from 2 screens to 300 and a handful of interesting indies open in limited release from Catherine Breillat‘s Last Summer to Jake Paltrow’s June Zero. Things are still quite tough but there’s room for optimism. Not clear if that will last, but it’s nice..

Sean Penn and Dakota Johnson star in a two-hander that takes place in a New York City cab, as cabbie Penn drives a young passenger (Dakota Johnson) to her mid-town home from the airport. Along the way, they engage in a witty, sharp back-and-forth conversation, where the beautiful young woman holds her own against the talkative, opinionated older cabbie. Their conversation is wide-ranging at first but eventually centers on the relationships between men and women. Almost from the start, she is getting texts from her boyfriend, obnoxious horny, drunken texts, that she seems mostly reluctant to engage with. These two very different people, the older cabbie with old school attitudes and a young successful woman, chat, trade views, share secrets in a kind of competition, and so bare their souls to each other,...

Well, who could forget the time when Christian Ditter’s How to Be Single’s very own Dakota Johnson & Leslie Mann flipped the script during a seemingly routine promotional interview with Wsvn Miami’s Chris Van Vliet?
The chemistry of the encounter was as indisputable as it was refreshing. Compliments on cute socks quickly turned into flirtatious quips, inviting Johnson and Mann to join in the fun while graciously avoiding the monotonous press junket questions. Through their laughter and wit, the actresses didn’t spare any chance to hit on the reporter. Mann asked the reporter if he was single and remarked on his socks, quickly throwing the interview off course.

An Intimate Setting The entirety of Daddio takes place within the confines of a taxi, making it an intense and intimate journey. A challenging endeavor no matter who is doing it, let alone your debut feature, writer-director Christy Hall’s “Daddio” is an intimate, two-hander that, for nearly its entire 100-minute runtime, takes place within the confines of a taxi. Dakota Johnson’s Character Johnson portrays a hardened New Yorker who isn’t even given a name; she’s credited simply as Girlie. Dakota Johnson stars as a young woman catching a taxi ride from JFK airport into Manhattan after a visit to see family. Behind the wheel is Sean Penn’s weathered but wise cabbie, eager to learn what life has brought his fare so far. Over the course of their journey, director Christy Hall’s debut film Daddio unfolds almost entirely within the confines of the cab, following an intimate conversation that develops between passenger and driver.
Starting off as polite small talk, the exchange grows deeper as frustrations and shared experiences come to light. Johnson’s character reveals past pains while still healing from current heartaches. Through it all, Penn listens with the understanding of someone who’s heard many tales over the years on the streets. His own regrets and what-ifs surface too in this rare chance to unfold his story.

Christy Hall was a playwright living in New York City — which means she had several side jobs, including walking dogs and bartending. “There’s a great quote saying, ‘you can make a killing in theater, but you can’t make a living,’” she notes. She had always dreamed of working in film and television, but it never felt completely realistic to her.
Today, Hall is the writer-director of “Daddio,” an acclaimed two-hander starring Sean Penn as a taxi driver named Clark and Dakota Johnson as his passenger, known only as Girlie. The film is both a love letter to New York and a reminder of the importance of human connection set almost entirely inside a cab ride from JFK Airport to Manhattan. The two strangers reveal secrets, offer encouragement and display both humor and vulnerability over the course of the film, which was shot in just 16 days.

A single location two hander is quite the undertaking for a feature directorial debut. But such is the path writer-director Christy Hall chose with Daddio. Add in the fact that the location in question is a cab, liming the visual appeal, and keeping the characters stationary for 99% of the movie, and you have very little margin for error. If nothing else, it makes for an exciting creative challenge, working within those constraints.

On paper, Daddio is about as simple as they come. Girlie (Dakota Johnson) lands at JFK Airport and gets in a cab to take her home to Manhattan. During the drive, she and her driver Clark (Sean Penn) engage in an unexpectedly deep and personal conversation, focusing on love and some of the important relationships – past and present – in both of their lives.

Nothing fancy, no pyrotechnics or sudden plot twists—just a wizened old cabbie and his female, millennial-aged passenger making their way from J.F.K. to midtown Manhattan, slowly revealing themselves and challenging each other’s assumptions. To help pass the time during an ugly traffic jam, they engage in a friendly game of conversational one-upmanship, each sharing details about their own life and offering perceptive observations about the other’s. Lightly flirtatious small talk progresses toward the confessional, and gradually an intimacy forms that’s specific to people who know they won’t see each other again.
Such is the premise of writer-director Christy Hall’s debut feature, Daddio, a film as tedious and predictable as its traffic-clogged Long Island Expressway setting. Sean Penn is slamming the backlash against straight actors playing homosexuals as “timid and artless”.The ‘Mystic River’ actor and director, 63, earned critical acclaim and his second Oscar for best actor thanks to his portrayal of the openly gay politician Harvey Milk in 2008’s ‘Milk’, and has now said he has been “miserable” on movie sets ever since. He told The New York Times about how he could not star in the film today amid hot debate over heterosexuals playing queer characters: “No. It could not happen in a time like this. “It’s a time of tremendous overreach. It’s a timid and artless policy toward the human imagination.”Opening up about how his work on ‘Milk’ was the “last time I had a good time” on a film set, Sean added: “I went 15 years miserable on sets. Have you ever considered what it’s like to stand at the crossroads of familial legacy & personal ambition? For Emma Roberts, this seems to be a daily reality. As the daughter of actor Eric Roberts (King of the Gypsies), and, more notably, the niece of cinematic darling Julia Roberts (Mystic Pizza), Roberts has endured the choppy waters of Tinseltown with a surname that resonates with stardom.
However, she’s no stranger to the sting of criticism regarding her family connections. In a recent candid revelation, Roberts confronts the double-edged sword of being a so-called ‘nepo baby’ in the industry. With an audacious spirit, she dismantles the notion that her path is solely determined by her lineage.

So, here she is, resilient, sharing a common struggle with peers like Gwyneth Paltrow and Dakota Johnson, while also shining a light on the gendered skew in this discourse.

Maybe it’s the metaphor. The transition, the feeling of getting caught in between two places while not really being in either one. Moving characters from Point A to Point B, internally and externally. There is room to grow in the back of a taxi.
