There’s no denying that 2008’s Speed Racer has developed a faithful cult following in the 15+ years since its release. And as far as the Wachowskis filmography does, it’s definitely one of the most mind blowing — visually speaking, at least. But does it rank up there with The Matrix? According to Speed Racer himself, Emile Hirsch, it’s not even a close contest – and you know which one he’s favoring.
Emile Hirsch took to social media this week to heap just about the highest praise he could on his movie, writing, “Just look up “why Speed Racer is a masterpiece” on YouTube and there’s like a thousand videos. A thousand articles written as well. Can we finally just declare that Speed Racer > The Matrix?”

A Quiet Place: Day One is the highly anticipated prequel film to John Krasinski‘s sci-fi film franchise A Quite Place. Written and directed by Michael Sarnoski, the apocalyptic horror film shows us the day when the aliens in A Quiet Place franchise invaded Earth, and instead of the Abbott family, we see the story of a terminally ill woman who tries to survive in New York City with her cat and an English law student named Eric. A Quiet Place: Day One stars Lupita Nyong’o and Joseph Quinn in the lead roles, with Alex Wolff, Djimon Hounsou, Eliane Umuhire, and Nico & Schnitzel starring in supporting roles. So, if you loved the intense survival thriller and alien invasion elements in A Quiet Place: Day One, here are some similar films you could watch next.

At the start of March, an image cinematographer Christian Sebaldt shared on Instagram revealed that Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) was finally, after years of development and a thirteen year gap between sequels, heading into production. Then franchise producer Craig Perry took to social media to confirm that Final Destination: Bloodlines was indeed filming, the aim being to get this one into theatres in 2025 – in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens! Filming wrapped in May, so we figured this would be a good time to compile a list of Everything We Know About Final Destination 6.

Ryan Phillippe and Mena Suvari play Andrew and Sue, Christian missionaries living in the remote Kalahari Desert region of Africa. Andrew is a doctor working to help the local community, but militant extremists threaten their safety. With few options available, the couple accepts a flight out with shady pilot Grun, portrayed by Emile Hirsch. Yet tragedy strikes mid-air as the overloaded plane crashes in a game reserve full of lions, leopards, and hyenas.
Sue suffers injuries in the wreck, leaving Andrew reluctant to leave her side. As Grun leads the other survivors to find help, Andrew stays behind to care for his wife. But with night falling and the reserve teeming with predators, their situation grows dire. Both man and beast now imperil the couple, who must summon every reserve of strength, skill, and faith to survive against the odds in the vast and volatile African wilderness.

We bet you have seen at least one episode of David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson’s cultish sci-fi series. Indeed, The X-Files is one of the most iconic shows in TV history that left a lasting legacy full of inspiration for sci-fi, thriller and horror filmmakers.
Following investigators of paranormal phenomena, this series is sometimes extremely scary without depicting much gore. That is why this 2016 supernatural horror is claimed to be reminiscent of it, and this underrated gem definitely deserves our attention.
It starts by introducing us to the duo of father-and-son coroners, who are used to seeing mutilated dead bodies. One day they’re recruited to investigate a cadaver of a beautiful young woman, and both her identity and cause of death are unknown.
While trying to examine the body, they begin experiencing supernatural occurrences in the morgue facility, as well as finding bizarre marks on the cadaver.

In the early moments of the 2007 movie Into the Wild, Emile Hirsch, in the role of 24-year-old adventurer Christopher McCandless, is walking alone in knee-deep snow when he stumbles upon an astounding sight, what McCandless would come to call “the magic bus.” The rusty, green-and-white Fairbanks City Transit System bus, abandoned in a remote area of central Alaska, would become McCandless’ makeshift shelter in the wilderness for over 100 days, the site of his death by starvation in the summer of 1992 and, eventually, a dangerous destination for hikers looking to replicate McCandless’ journey.
Today the bus, which became a global symbol of restless travelers in the wake of Jon Krakauer’s best-selling 1996 book about McCandless and the subsequent Sean Penn-directed movie, is no longer in the backcountry. In June of 2020, for reasons of public safety, the state of Alaska lifted the 1946 International Harvester K-5 out of the wild with a...

Exclusive: Chicago Fire newcomer Jocelyn Hudon has been upped to series regular beginning Season 13, sources tell Deadline.
Hudon joined the Season 12 cast in April as Lyla Novak, a new paramedic at Firehouse 51 who at first loves freelancing but reluctantly agrees to join Violet (Hanako Greensmith) as an official part of the team. In a short time, Lyla has proven to be an integral member of the paramedics with leadership skills that will go far at 51. She also realizes that standing still and being part of something big feels pretty nice, too.
Chicago Fire follows the professional and personal lives of firefighters, rescuers and paramedics of Firehouse 51 in the Windy City. Current series stars include Taylor Kinney, David Eigenberg, Eamonn Walker, Miranda Rae Mayo, Christian Stolte, Hanako Greensmith and Joe Minoso.

Since the release of Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist Western thriller The Hateful Eight in 2015, fans had been eagerly awaiting the director’s next project for a torturous four years. Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019), his grandiose crime drama delves into the relationship between the Manson family murders and a fictional TV actor (& his stunt double).
It is not merely a film; it’s Tarantino’s cinematic celebration of an era—a star-studded tableau that emphatically stakes its claim as one of 2019’s best displays of acting talent. Under the skillful direction of casting director Victoria Thomas, whose ability to bring the fabled talents of Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio together to create a screen sensation, the cast of the movie was more brilliant than ever.

Two works from the early queer literary canon will see audiobook release this June, narrated by actor Emile Hirsch.
Both were authored by Fritz Peters, an overlooked trailblazer in the 1950s who wrote frank and intimate depictions of homosexuality, spirituality and mental health struggles. The books are the novel “Finistère” and the memoir “Boyhood With Gurdjieff,” hitting audio platforms in time for global pride celebrations.
The recordings mark Hirsch’s first in the space, save voicing a character in “Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans,” the animated film from Guillermo del Toro. Known for films like “Into the Wild” and “Milk,” he will next appear in the holocaust film “‘Bau, Artist at War.”
Despite selling big in his time, Peters’ catalogue had fallen into relative obscurity compared to literati peers like Gore Vidal, Henry Miller and Eudora Welty. Production company Hirsch Giovanni acquired the author’s complete works two years ago and serve as re-release publishers.

Despite what you may think, Memorial Day isn’t just a day off work or an occasion for a good storewide mattress sale. The ostensible purpose of this federal holiday, of course, is to remember the sacrifice of those who have died while serving in our country’s five armed services branches: the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps and Navy—all of which continue to suffer great losses performing their duties around the globe.
The experiences of servicemen and servicewomen have served as the basis of countless movies and TV shows over the years, in all sorts of different forms. But the most powerful of these are the ones based upon actual journalistic accounts from real-life soldiers. So in advance of Memorial Day on Monday, here are five military-themed indies we love…

AnnaSophia’s Perspective on Height and Perception

Although Stephen King is the undisputed leader of horror fiction, along with other contemporary authors such as Clive Barker, Ann Rice, and Dan Simmons, the American King of Horror is also a great connoisseur of film and television.
In fact, live-action adaptations of Stephen King's work have been around for nearly 50 years, and King has personally worked on or been involved in the production of several of them. His love of movies and shows is second only to that of another master of the horror genre, Guillermo del Toro, who often boasts of his encyclopedic knowledge of cinema.
As a result, King himself is not shy about sharing his own discoveries in the world of cinema and television, regularly posting reviews or simple observations on social platforms about what he has recently seen and what particularly impressed him.

Image created by “Shutterstock.AI” When Emile Hirsch starred as the title character in 2008’s Speed Racer, he felt confident that he’d be in a blockbuster movie. After all, with the Wachowskis directing, the beloved kids’ cartoon was going to get a state-of-the-art makeover that combined live action with brand-new CGI effects. So Hirsch was perplexed when the movie was generally panned by critics and shunned by audiences. Over the years, though, people have slowly come around to realizing that the movie was ahead of its time, and it’s now become a cult classic. A big part of that re-evaluation came from the innovative techniques that created Speed Racer’s vibrant, cartoonish look, though Hirsch once told us that was the most challenging part of making the movie in the first place. If there’s ever a movie from the late 2000s deserving of its reevaluation, might we thrust Speed Racer to the front? A dizzying piece of pop that zooms like an acid trip through the world of racing and anime, the movie just did not connect with audiences…outside of those actively under a certain kind of influence, at least. To say it went under the radar – taking in $44 million domestically on a $120 million budget – would be an understatement, but it has gained a lot traction in the 15+ years since its release, taking on a cult status that was sort of always there underneath the rubble.
Speed Racer star Emile Hirsch is well aware of the movie’s modern reception, although it does remind him of its flop at the box office. “When it came out, it was unanimously dogged…I remember we were all like, ‘Man, this movie is so good.

Very sad news today as it’s been reported that M. Emmet Walsh has died at the age of 88. No matter the size of the role, the prolific character actor always made a unique impression throughout his long career, which spanned six decades.
M. Emmet Walsh is best known for playing Bryant in Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner, the captain of the Los Angeles Police Department who tasks Deckard with tracking down the replicants at the beginning of the film. He told THR that the cast and crew weren’t quite sure what the make of the movie when they first saw it. “I don’t know if I really understood what in the hell it was all about,” Walsh said. “We all sat there and it ended. And nothing. We didn’t know what to say or to think or do! We didn’t know what in the hell we had done!

Actor Ryan Phillippe shared his experience on the set of his new action thriller film Prey.
Phillippe revealed what about the film he originally connected with. “The idea of being on this plane that goes down in a reserve, for big prey, for big game, it just captured my imagination pretty immediately,” Phillippe told uInterview founder Erik Meers, who first interviewed the actor for the cover of Paper magazine in 2001.
He continued, “You know, I like survival movies, and I felt like this was one where any of us could put ourselves in that situation, mentally, and it’s terrifying, you know, and so it was a really easy sell in regards to what the idea of the movie was, and I like that a lot of times, I think that in its simplicity there is relatability to that because you can imagine what if it happened to you, or whatever.

Emile Hirsch is a very capable actor. He’s done amazing work in films like Freaks and Killer Joe, so he is, let’s say, the kind of person a beleaguered film critic might take a chance on even when he’s appearing in the kind of film they’d normally avoid. This particular critic reminded this critic of why that rule was in place, but also of how the best actors are capable of salvaging something even in the worst situations.

Yesterday, an image cinematographer Christian Sebaldt shared on Instagram indicated that Final Destination 6 (which is going by the title Final Destination: Bloodlines) is finally, after years of development and a thirteen year gap between sequels, heading into production. Now franchise producer Craig Perry has taken to social media to confirm that Final Destination: Bloodlines is indeed filming, the aim being to get this one into theatres in 2025 – in time to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the release of the original film. It will even be on IMAX screens!
Perry wrote, “After a long, hard slog through the pandemic and the strikes, Day One is finally in the can. 2025 will mark the 25th anniversary of the release of the first installment in the franchise. To honor the occasion with another worldwide theatrical release is a rare and wonderful thing. I’m wholly grateful for the opportunity, and humbly appreciate the...

It’s about time! Thirteen years have gone by since the release of Final Destination 5, but we’ve been hearing rumblings that another sequel was on the way for years. A while back, Jon Watts, director of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Spider-Man: Far from Home, and Spider-Man: No Way Home, came on board to produce the sixth film in the Final Destination franchise alongside Dianne McGunigle, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, and Craig Perry. Back in September of 2022, we learned that the duo of Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein, who previously directed the 2018 film Freaks (starring Emile Hirsch and Bruce Dern) and the 2019 live-action Kim Possible movie, would be directing Final Destination 6. Last October, it was revealed that the film will be called Final Destination: Bloodlines… and now cinematographer Christian Sebaldt has shared an image that indicates Final Destination: Bloodlines will be heading into production soon! (If it hasn’t already.

A trailer for Prey has just arrived online – and no, we’re not talking about that Predator movie that was just released a while back. This is a new movie called Prey, which Vertical will be giving a theatrical and VOD release on March 15th. It seems kind of soon to be sending another movie called Prey out into the world, but clearly Vertical disagrees. ]“Prey” is a new live-action thriller, written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dweli, starring Ryan Phillippe, Emile Hirsch, Dylan Flashner, Tristan Thompson, Michaela Sasner, Jeremy Tardy and Suvari, opening March 15, 2024 in theaters:
“…after an extremist militant group threatens their lives, a young couple is forced to flee their missionary post in the Kalahari Desert. Granted passage aboard a rickety plane, piloted by a corrupt smuggler, their escape to safety is nearly in reach. But when their aircraft loses power and crash lands, they discover a bigger threat awaits them as they find themselves stranded in the middle of an animal preserve populated by maneaters — lions, leopards, and hyenas.
“injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group of passengers must fight for survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive…”

Exclusive: Umbrelic Entertainment co-founders Thomas Zambeck and Brian Katz are bringing back a new Anchor Bay Entertainment with an eye on genre films, undiscovered treasures, cult classics, and remastered catalog releases.
“We had an opportunity to take the name of a beloved genre film brand, one we feel a personal connection to, for our new company,” says Zambeck. “This is a new venture, unaffiliated with any previous incarnations. We aim to honor the history and spirit of the past as we look for interesting films that break the mold, and will be discovered by new generations for years to come.”
In Lionsgate’s acquisition of Starz in December 2016, the studio absorbed the North American branches of Anchor Bay Entertainment. The Anchor Bay Entertainment trademark was up for acquisition so Zambeck and Katz took the opportunity to acquire it. The new Anchor Bay Entertainment doesn’t include the previous label’s library.

"You're mistaking dreams for memories..." "These aren't dreams." Lionsgate has debuted an official trailer for the film State of Consciousness, a mysterious psychological thriller from filmmaker Marcus Stokes. This already premiered at a film festival in Italy a few years ago and was released in Italy last year, though is only now opening in the US - starting in March for those curious. Nightmares & reality are indistinguishable to Stephen when he is forced to take medication for a psychological disorder he doesn't have. To regain his sanity and get back to his normal life, he sets out to escape from the institution he has been trapped in. As usual, he begins to realize the truth is more frightening than anything he could imagine. Directed by Marcus Stokes, this stars Emile Hirsch as Stephen, Tatjana Nardone, Kesia Elwin, Robin Mugnani, David Wurawa, and Michael E. Rodgers. Yet another Matrix rip-off stuffed into a psychological thriller?...

Another Lionsgate movie is headed to Netflix, marking the first time it’s been available on an SVOD service. The Re-Education of Molly Singer drops on Netflix in the United States on February 5th, 2024.
Ty Simpkins and Jaime Pressly (My Name is Earl) headline the cast of the R-rated comedy movie that’s about attorney Molly Singer, who is on the verge of being fired and the only way to save her job is by re-enrolling at her old alma mater and re-experience college. Danny A. Abeckaser is directing and starring in a new World War II drama, “Bardejov” from a screenplay by Shmuel Lynn. It has already been picked up by Gravitas Ventures for North American distribution next spring.
Also starring Robert Davi, Kyle Stefanski, Dean Miroshnikov, Darren Weiss and Omer Hazan, the film tells the story of the Jews of Bardejov in Slovakia, who were almost completely wiped out during the Holocaust.
Among them was Holocaust survivor Emil A. Fish, who was 9 years old when a Gestapo officer found him and his family hiding and sent them to a concentration camp to suffer the same fate as their many friends and relatives. Fish survived but to this day no Jews live in Bardejov.
Fish, who is the founder of the Bardejov Jewish Preservation Committee, also makes a cameo in the film and is a producer on the project.

Emile Hirsch, the actor who rose to fame with movies like The Girl Next Door, and Into the Wild, has been missing in action over the past few years. Well, he has been making some films, but they are not as good as the ones I just mentioned. Hirsch acts like Leonardo DiCaprio, and I have seen the news that they are friends, so there should be no problem. But DiCaprio should avoid seeing Hirsch’s new film Walden, where it looks like he is doing a DiCaprio impression, almost mocking his intense look and insulting his intelligence. Walden is a story about Walden Dean, a devout Christian and a stenographer at the Georgia District Court who works under Judge Boyle. Walden gets news that he is suffering from a brain tumor, and this sparks a change in his mundane life, and he resolves to kill all those who he thinks have escaped justice.

Emile Hirsch plays a violent cop who finds his way into the mafia in a film whose devotion to Martin Scorsese’s classic runs through every frame
This 70s-set based-on-a-truish-story crime drama about an undercover cop embedded with mobsters was originally released in the US as The Gemini Lounge; for some reason it’s been retitled Inside Man for the UK, but on no account should it be confused with either the excellent Spike Lee-directed heist movie from 2006 or the recent Netflix show starring David Tennant. And while it merely borrows the title of better made movies, there’s something almost superfan-stalkerish about this film’s relationship to Martin Scorsese’s GoodFellas. It’s not a remake in any way and revolves around totally different characters and a different plot, but it somehow does a cheap karaoke version of GoodFellas’ rhythms, phrasing, look and general vibe.
This runs through every element here,...

Plot: Walden Dean an unassuming court stenographer in a small southern town, when he discovers he is dying, he decides to exact revenge on criminals who escaped their prosecution
Review: Emile Hirsch is one of those actors that, no matter the film, his performances stand out. While he plays the straight man very well, I’ve always enjoyed him more when he goes the more “out there” route. And his role as Walden is certainly a weird one. Walden Dean is a courtroom stenographer obsessed with breaking the typing world record. But when he’s told he’s dying, he decides he can no longer be an impartial observer, and takes matters into his own hands. And his sense of justice is quite…violent.
Don’t go into Walden expecting some kind of stereotypical trajectory of “Man takes justice into his own hands.” Sure, there are absolutely elements that feel...
