The ongoing restructuring at Warner Bros. Discovery may be affecting one of its most valuable franchises.
Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin says a couple of potential spinoffs of the megahit have been “shelved,” though others remain in active development. Writing on his blog, Martin attributed the delays to “all the changes at HBO Max.”
Martin wrote that he’s working on “several of the other [Game of Thrones] successor shows that we’re developing with HBO. "House of the Dragon" has taken the world by storm. It has proven to be more than just a successor to "Game of Thrones," HBO's flagship series based on George R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and Fire" novels. The prequel is based on the Dance of the Dragons civil war, which divided House Targaryen forever. Adapted from Martin's "Fire & Blood," which explores the complete history of the Valyrian noble house, the series focuses on the inevitable war of succession between Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen and her half-brother Prince Aegon Targaryen for the Iron Throne.
George R.R. Martin handpicked screenwriter Ryan Condal to helm "House of the Dragon." While the writer currently serves as showrunner on the series, it wasn't the only "Game of Thrones" prequel he wanted to work on — Condal made a pitch of his own to HBO, based on a story from Martin that he loved best.

Television is going through a very fantastical moment.
“House of the Dragon,” the new prequel series for “Game of Thrones,” just premiered on HBO and HBO Max to boffo numbers, and next week “The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power” premieres on Prime Video, pitting two of the most well-known (and lavishly produced) fantasy properties on the planet. But if you never read the source material or watched earlier entries in the respective series, this could be all Greek (or Elvish) to you. With remarkably similar marketing campaigns, it’s undoubtedly confusing which is which (and whether or not there are actually witches in either show).
Let us break down the biggest differences between the two shows since, as Electric Light Orchestra once noted, confusion is such a terrible thing.

When House of the Dragon first premieres on Aug. 21 on HBO, Game of Thrones fans should find a lot of it quite familiar. Just like the flagship series upon which it’s spun off from, House of the Dragon is a big endeavor. The show features a sprawling cast of King’s Landing schemers, tons of twists and turns, and more dragons than the side of a 1970s panel van.
If anything, House of the Dragon could end up feeling as epic or more so than Game of Thrones despite adapting a smaller section of George R.R. Martin’s source material. Interestingly enough, however, the showrunner behind it originally had a much smaller, more intimate vision of Martin’s Westeros.
House of the Dragon showrunner Ryan Condal (formerly of Colony and Rampage) has a lengthy history with George R.R. Martin’s epic novels.

David Harbour and Pedro Pascal are set to appear in a new limited HBO series called "My Dentist's Murder Trial," Variety announced on July 26. The show will be based on a New Yorker article by James Lasdun, "My Dentist's Murder Trial: Adultery, False Identities, and a Lethal Sedation," which unfurled the true saga of how dentist Dr. Gilberto Nunez was charged with (and eventually acquitted of) the murder of his friend Thomas Kolman.
Harbour and Pascal are also both executive producing the series, which has been acquired by HBO, and the script will be written by Steve Conrad, who will also executive produce and direct the first episode. Other executive producers include Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, Steve Tisch, Bruce Terris, Molly Allen, James Lasdun, and MGM Television.
Harbour most recently appeared in the fourth season of "Stranger Things," making a triumphant return as Hopper after being presumed dead at the end of the previous season.

HBO is developing My Dentist’s Murder Trial, a limited series, starring and executive produced by David Harbour (Stranger Things) and Pedro Pascal.
Written by Steve Conrad, who is set to direct the pilot episode, My Dentist’s Murder Trial is inspired by James Lasdun’s 2017 New Yorker article “My Dentist’s Murder Trial: Adultery, false identities, and a lethal sedation.”
The true crime story chronicled in the article centers on Dr. Gilberto Nunez who in 2015 was indicted for killing his friend Thomas Kolman by getting him “to ingest a substance that caused his death.” There were also two forgery counts, including Nunez posing as a C.I.A. agent. Nunez, who had had an affair with Kolman’s wife Linda, stood trial in 2018 where he was found not guilty of murder but guilty on fraud charges, which led to a prison sentence.

The Game of Thrones sequel starring Kit Harington will be called Snow, and it has all been instigated by the actor, author George R.R. Martin says.
“Yes, there is a Jon Snow show in development,” Martin wrote Thursday on his personal blog. “Our working title for the show is Snow.”
In the entry on his blog, the author on whose books the award-winning HBO blockbuster was based, teased out a few more details of the potential series, which seems to be much further along than previously presumed.
For one thing, reiterating what GoT star Emilia Clarke told the BBC on Wednesday, Martin says that it was Harington himself who initiated the idea for the new show. The scribe once called the “American Tolkien” by Time magazine also revealed that Snow is partially staffed up.

Last week, news broke that HBO was in development on a “Game of Thrones” sequel series centered around Kit Harington’s Jon Snow character, the latest in a large suite of projects being developed that have their start in the world created by George R.R. Martin and dramatized by the blockbuster series (which concluded in the summer of 2019). Now, both Martin and Daenerys Targaryen herself Emilia Clarke are talking about the new series and its somewhat surprising origins.
According to Martin, who posted about the news on his website’s Not-a-Blog section, the project is codenamed “Snow” and has been development as long as the other “Game of Thrones”-adjacent series that HBO is developing, which are “Ten Thousand Ships” (from Amanda Segel), “Sea Snake” aka “Nine Voyages” (from “Rome” creator Bruno Heller) and a show centered around characters Dunk and Egg, from “The Pursuit of Happyness” writer Steve Conrad.

“A Song of Ice and Fire” author George R.R. Martin promises he’s still working to finish his book series, but explained in a new blog post that a number of “Game of Thrones” spinoff series have taken up much of his time lately.
“The Winds of Winter,” the planned sixth novel in Martin’s book series, on which the HBO series “Game of Thrones” was based, has been in the works since at least 2011. In a Wednesday post on his blog, Martin admits while he made “a lot” of progress on the book in 2020, he made “less” in 2021. “But ‘less’ is not ‘none,’” Martin added.
Why did he make less progress in 2021? Because he was busy working on various “Game of Thrones” spinoff series in the works at HBO and HBO Max. The first, “House of the Dragon,” has wrapped filming and while HBO has yet to officially greenlight any additional shows,...

George R.R. Martin sent a raven Wednesday with updates on his highly anticipated new projects on his blog.
The 73-year old fantasy author behind “Game of Thrones” (and creative contributor to the just-dropped “Elden Ring” video game) cast some light on the numerous “GoT” prequel series that are in the works. Perhaps more importantly to his O.G. fans, he confirmed that he is still plugging away at his long-delayed novel “The Winds of Winter,” the sixth of seven planned doorstopper books in the “A Song of Ice and Fire” series from which “Game of Thrones” and the entire Westeros mythos derives.
“Winds of Winter,” which was originally due to be published in 2016, is still coming, he says, but as a way of excusing himself for its absence, he wrote that Westeros is bigger than just one project now. But working in that world is his “number one priority,” he said.

Fantasy writer George R.R. Martin took to his blog Wednesday to offer updates on his many Game of Thrones spinoff series, and books including the long-awaited The Winds of Winter, among other projects. He also shared his thoughts on early cuts of HBO’s prequel series House of the Dragon, which he says is “coming soon.
“House Of The Dragon has wrapped in London and is now in post-production,” he wrote. “What I have seen, I have loved. I am eager to see more.”
Martin says he is developing GoT spinoff series across live-action and animation, for HBO and HBO Max, respectively. “No, can’t tell you how many,” he said. “But it is my hope that a number of these shows will get on the air.”
Those on the live-action side he could speak to included a series centered on the character Corlys Celaryon, for which Rome creator-showrunner Bruno Heller has written the pilot; Nymeria series Ten Thousand Ships, for which showrunner Amanda Segel has delivered “a couple of drafts”; and a Dunk & Egg series from Steve Conrad, based on his novella series Tales of Dunk and Egg, the first season of which will adapt Martin’s novella, The Hedge Knight. “My team and I have had some great sessions with Steve and his team, and we really hit it off. He’s determined to do a faithful adaptation of the stories, which is exactly what I want; these characters and stories are very precious to me,” wrote Martin. “Contrary to what you may have read on line, the show will not be called Dunk & Egg, which could be mistaken for a sitcom by viewers unfamiliar with the stories. We’re leaning toward A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms for the series title, though The Hedge Knight has its partisans as well.”
On the animation side, Martin would only speak to a series set in Yi Ti, a region in the far east of the continent of Essos, the working title of which is The Golden Empire. “We have a great young writer on that one too, and I think the art and animation is just going to be beautiful,” wrote Martin. “I would tell you more if I could. I don’t think I can say a word about the other animated shows. Not yet.”
Martin said that he’s seen comments online questioning how involved he is in the upcoming Game of Thrones projects, sharing that “the answer is: a lot.”
“It’s my world, and while I have been working closely with some fantastic writers and showrunners, ultimately it is up to me to try to keep the canon… well, canonical…,” said Martin, “and to do all I can to help make the new shows great. (And I love these stories too).”
Martin also confirmed today that he is “still working” on The Winds of Winter, the anticipated sixth novel in the epic series A Song of Ice and Fire on which Game of Thrones was based. “I made a lot of progress on Winds in 2020, and less in 2021…” he wrote, “but ‘less’ is not ‘none.’ ”
In addition to Winds, Martin is currently writing “the second volume of Archmaester Gyldayn’s history, Fire & Blood”, with “a couple hundred pages” down and “a long way to go”; as well as “an illustrated, condensed version of Fire & Blood” done with Elio Garcia, Linda Antonsson and Raya Golden, and another book that he describes as “a Who’s Who in Westeros.”
While Martin maintains that “the world of Westeros, the world of A Song Of Ice & Fire” remains his top priority, he’s also currently at work on series including Roadmarks for HBO, Dark Winds for AMC, Wild Cards for UCP and Peacock, and the short film Night of the Cooters from director Vincent D’Onofrio, which he says “should be finished this month.”
Airing between 2011-2019, Game of Thrones was an epic fantasy series created for HBO by David Benioff and D.B. Weiss that saw nine noble families fight for control over the lands of Westeros, with an ancient enemy returning after being dormant for millennia. House of the Dragon is set 200 years before the events of that series and will tell the story of the House Targaryen, associated with GoT characters including Emilia Clarke’s dragon-taming Daenerys.

House of the Dragon is coming to HBO this year.
But we already knew that, right? HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys told Deadline that they are currently in talks with the team behind the dragons to figure out exactly when to launch the spinoff fantasy series and admits that the network was cautious about revealing a date before due to the impact of Covid on production.
The prequel series, which comes from George R.R. Martin, Ryan Condal and Miguel Sapochnik, has now finished production and fans should expect an update soon. It stars Paddy Considine, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy and Fabien Frankel. Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best and Sonoya Mizuno also feature.

The new book “Tinderbox: HBO’s Ruthless Pursuit of New Frontiers” by journalist James Andrew Miller is the gift that keeps on giving for fans of HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” The book features extensive interviews with author George R.R. Martin about the beloved fantasy series that ended in 2019 — but has a raft of prequels and spinoffs coming down the pipeline.
The world of Westeros is returning to HBO in the new year with the prequel series “House of the Dragon,” and that’s not at all. Just this week, news broke that Steve Conrad has been hired as the writer and executive producer of a second spinoff series titled “Dunk & Egg.” There are also reports that HBO is in development on two animated series set in the “Thrones” universe. And according to the book, back in 2017, Martin was surprised to learn just how many prequels HBO had in the cards.

One spinoff that isn’t seeing the light of day is the the first one that HBO announced, the pilot for which was shot and then scrapped. According to former WarnerMedia entertainment chairman Bob Greenblatt, that single episode cost the network over $30 million.
“They had spent over $30 million on a ‘Game of Thrones’ prequel pilot that was in production when I got there,” Greenblatt said in the new HBO book “Tinderbox” (via Insider). “And when I saw a cut of it...

The “Game of Thrones” prequel series “Tales of Dunk and Egg” at HBO has found its writer, Variety has learned from sources.
Steve Conrad has been tapped to serve as writer and executive producer on the potential series under his Elephant Pictures banner. As Variety exclusively reported in January 2021, the one-hour show would be based on the series of fantasy novellas by George R. R. Martin, which follow the adventures of Ser Duncan the Tall (Dunk) and a young Aegon V Targaryen (Egg) 90 years prior to the events of “A Song of Ice and Fire.”
Reps for HBO and Conrad declined to comment.
Conrad previously created the Amazon series “Patriot” as well as the current AMC stop-motion animation series “Ultra City Smiths.” He also co-created the Epix neo-noir series “Perpetual Grace Ltd” starring Sir Ben Kingsley and Jimmi SImpson. Conrad directed multiple episodes of all three shows. On the film side,...

As if made to prove that film noir isn’t one genre, but all the genres, Steve Conrad’s “Ultra City Smiths” tackles its many creative departures with captivating verve, gliding from crime saga to sporadic musical to stop-motion animated whodunit, all while imbuing each with a spirit so bleak it makes the new series’ dreamy dancing between absurd comedy and moving drama absolutely stunning.
And yes, there is dancing — oh, is there ever.
While describing the AMC+ series’ plot may prove as futile as launching a standalone streaming service for a network whose biggest hits are available elsewhere, I, too, will give it a go. “Ultra City Smiths” is set in Ultra City, a Manhattan stand-in filled with sports arenas like Addison Square Garden, newspapers like “The Ultra City Times” spelled out in a familiar Old English font, and prison ferries shipping in from Rucker’s Island. Neither of Steve Conrad’s quirky television genre exercises — Amazon’s Patriot and Epix’s Perpetual Grace, Ltd — was a blockbuster, but both shows have dedicated fan bases inspired by the writer-director-producer’s artfully convoluted dialogue, off-kilter eye and eccentric casting choices.

In the wake of the pandemic, shows have gotten inventive, many eschewing actors entirely in favor of finding unique ways to tell stories with animated methods.
