The 1986 war drama "Platoon" was Oliver Stone's fourth film as a director, but it proved to be his breakout in the public consciousness. Before 1986, Stone helmed two horror movies and a biopic of war photographer Richard Boyle ("Salvador"), but "Platoon" put him on the map. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, and won four, including Best Picture and Best Director. Stone immediately emerged as an enfent terrible, ready to interrogate and criticize previously romanticized American institutions. He also became wildly ambitious, seemingly possessing the temerity to assume his films would change the way the public thinks. In some cases, he was right.
Stone wore his politics on his sleeve, and often spoke about how much he hated the American right wing. Two of his films are deeply critical biopics of Republican presidents, and several of his more recent documentaries analyze politicians in power. He has turned his lens on Vladimir Putin,...

Joe Biden is among those across politics and Hollywood reacting to the deadly shooting at Donald Trump’s rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, on Saturday.
The former president’s campaign said Trump was “fine” after being rushed off the stage when gunfire erupted. The shooting is being investigated as an attempted assassination on Trump, law enforcement officials told the Associated Press. A local prosecutor said the suspected gunman, who the FBI later identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, and at least one attendee are dead.
Hours following the shooting, Trump wrote on his Truth Social media site that a bullet “pierced the upper part of my right ear.” He added, “I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin. Much bleeding took place, so I realized then what was happening.”

Update: President Joe Biden called the shooting at Donald Trump’s rally, which appeared to injure the former president, “sick.”
“It’s sick,” Biden told reporters in Rehoboth Beach, De. “It’s sick. It’s one reason we have to unite this country. We cannot allow for this to be happening. We cannot be like this. We cannot condone this.”
Biden said that he has tried to get ahold of Trump, but he has been with his doctors. “Apparently he’s doing well. I plan on talking to him shortly, I hope.”
Biden said that he did not yet have enough facts to say yet whether the shooting was an assassination attempt.
“I have an opinion but I don’t have all the facts,” Biden said.

A potential pastry battle has been averted as Jellyroll (the Philadelphia wedding band) has dismissed their trademark infringement lawsuit against Jelly Roll (the hit-making country singer).

Today, Apple TV+ announced, in partnership with ZDFneo, the new fast-paced, eight-episode medical drama Krank Berlin from Violet Pictures and Real Film Berlin, co-created by former emergency room physician turned screenwriter Samuel Jefferson and Viktor Jakovleski.
Krank Berlin stars Haley Louise Jones as Dr. Parker and Slavko Popadić (Crooks), alongside an ensemble cast including Şafak Şengül (Rabiye Kurnaz vs. George W. Bush), Aram Tafreshian (Dogs of Berlin), Samirah Breuer (The Gryphon), Bernhard Schütz (Barbarians), and Peter Lohmeyer (I don’t work here).
Managing a chaotic emergency room in the toughest and most overcrowded hospital in Berlin is no small task for the young Dr. Parker, who is seeking a fresh start in the big city after her private life implodes in Munich.
When she tries to implement necessary reforms, Parker is confronted with resistance from the underpaid, ill-equipped, and chronically fatigued hospital staff, who survive only with an indispensable dose of black humor.

Madonna and Green Day are very different artists, but they both released hit singles called “Holiday.” One of these songs is timeless. The other is a lot of fun, but it feels more dated with each passing year. Here’s a look at why one “Holiday” is worth celebrating more than the other.
Madonna’s ‘Holiday’ and Green Day’s are both good but only 1 is timely
Some songs are great because they are complex or innovative, and others are great because they perfectly capture a simple mood. Madonna’s “Holiday” does just that. Everyone needs a holiday, and Madonna chipperly captures the joy of leaving your cares behind for a short while. The bass line is one of the best in Madonna’s entire career. “Holiday” wasn’t a massive hit like “Vogue” or “Like a Virgin,” but it’s universal.

It’s not because she broke.
One of the most talked-about moments of the television season — if not the year — was longtime “Saturday Night Live” pro Heidi Gardner bursting into laughter during the April 13 episode upon seeing host Ryan Gosling and Mikey Day in full Beavis and Butt-Head cosplay. It was one of the biggest and longest breaks in the show’s history, one that became contagious to almost every performer on stage. And it involved Gardner, a consummate pro, who had never previously broken character, despite years of playing some of the most outrageous and scene-stealing roles.
The viral moment served as a reminder of how much Gardner’s talents can be taken for granted. Since her 2017 debut as a featured player, the comic has proven that her range is endless. She’s frequently cast as the “straight man” host in talk show or news segments, a precise skill...

Zack Snyder has plans to make a film on one of the greatest heroes in American history, George Washington. While other presidents like Abraham Lincoln, Richard Nixon, and even George W. Bush were brought to the screen, the Founding Father’s story is yet to be told.
Surprisingly, Snyder’s intention is to make a full-blown action movie like 300, showing Washington as a war hero. It is also possible that he could bring action stars like Brad Pitt or Tom Cruise to play the central character.
Zack Snyder and Gerard Butler on the sets of 300 | Legendary Pictures
If the movie gets made, it would be one of the most stylized depictions of an American president in films. Ever since Snyder made this desire public, some people opposed the idea, sharing that Washington’s story was more of a drama rather than an action-packed war movie.

Here's an experiment that you can try in just about any town in America:
Walk into a public place that's full of adults between the ages of 35 and 50 and shout the simple two-word phrase "dental plan!"
There's a very strong chance that some sophisticated barfly will respond -- almost involuntarily -- with "Lisa needs braces!"
If you fall into the demographic described above, then we probably don't need to tell you that those quotes are from The Simpsons.
Specifically, they're from a 1993 episode entitled "Last Exit to Springfield," which many fans consider to be one of the series' finest.
The Simpsons, of course, is widely agreed to be one of the sharpest and most intelligent sitcoms -- animated or otherwise -- in TV history.

Welcome to ElectionLine’s A View From Abroad series, in which we speak with media figures who are not from America but keep a close eye on its politics. Every few weeks, these smart observers will provide a unique perspective on the fraught and unpredictable campaign for the White House. This week, our interview is with Nadia Bilbassy-Charters, the Washington D.C. bureau chief for Al Arabiya, the state-owned Saudi Arabian Arabic news network.
Nadia Bilbassy-Charters evokes a vivid image as she recalls her former home in Gaza City. She speaks of a happy place; a sun-soaked villa with cherry, fig, and olive trees on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. It is all rubble now, she says ruefully. And the tragic consequences of the Israel-Gaza crisis are not just bound up in bricks and mortar for Bilbassy-Charters: 12 members of her extended family have been killed since the Hamas atrocities...

For some reason, there has yet to be a mainstream Hollywood feature film about Donald Trump dramatizing any aspect of Trump's life, with an actor portraying him.
There have been countless documentaries about Trump, both for him and against him, and various comedians have portrayed him, including Alec Baldwin and later James Austin Johnson on Saturday Night Live.
The Comey Rule, a 2020 Showtime miniseries based on the memoirs of former FBI director James Comey, starred Brendan Gleeson as the 45th president, opposite Jeff Daniels as Comey.
At the same time, quite a few feature films, like The Oath in 2018 and Irresistible and The Hunt in 2020, have attempted to make dramatic hay out of the political controversies of the Trump years.
However, those who have not featured a Trump-based character have not referenced him directly.

The International Criminal Court issued applications for arrest warrants on Monday against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and several other Israeli and Hamas officials on war crimes charges and allegations of crimes against humanity.
The court alleges that both Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack against Israel, in which more than 1,000 Israelis were killed and hundreds kidnapped, as well as Israel’s retaliatory offensive against the Gaza Strip and blockade of aid to Palestinians were conducted in violation of international law. More than 34,000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza.

When it was released in January of 2001, Richard Kelly's bleak time-travel psychological drama "Donnie Darko" caused a notable stir. The title character, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, is a teen struggling with schizophrenia in 1988, a time when Reagan's great Conservative revolution was drawing to a close and adults clung to suburban conformity as it crumbled under them. Donnie is obsessed with time-travel and regularly hallucinates a vicious, strange anthropomorphic rabbit monster named Frank (all while attempting to socialize at school and foster a romance with a classmate played by Jena Malone). Patrick Swayze appears as a cheesy self-self guru, Drew Barrymore plays one of Donnie's teachers, and Maggie Gyllenhaal plays Donnie's sister.
By turns psychedelic and weirdly moving (in a Goth sort of way), "Donnie Darko" quickly became a cult hit and rotated directly into the local midnight movie circuit, attracting a wide swath of misfits and night people.

Of President Joe Biden’s myriad quips and Dad joke-level zingers at Saturday night’s White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner — including around the thorny issue of his age and aimed at former President Donald Trump — one joke, in particular, referenced a notable, recent move by his campaign.
Speaking to a crowd of media figures, A-list celebrities and Beltway power brokers who’d just wrapped up their dinner, Biden started serving up one punchline after another. About halfway through his tight 15, the president referred to his recent sitdown with talk radio host Howard Stern.
“I have higher standards,” Biden said from the podium. “I do interviews with strong independent journalists who millions of people actually listen to…like Howard Stern.”
Goofing on Stern’s journalistic credibility landed with the audience, which, despite the spectacle of the star-studded event, is meant to honor the bravery, tenacity and grit of some of the best reporters in the nation.

Dan Rather returned to CBS today for an interview on CBS Sunday Morning, his first appearance coming days before the debut of a Netflix documentary on his life.
Rather spent 44 years at the network, 24 as anchor of the CBS Evening News. He departed under a cloud after an investigation into then-President George W. Bush’s military record raised questions about journalistic methodology. Rather exited as anchor for the last time on March 9, 2005, and left CBS 15 months later when his contract expired.
“Without apology or explanation, I miss CBS,” Rather told correspondent Lee Cowan in the interview that aired Sunday. “I’ve missed it since the day I left.”
Asked what made him want to become a reporter in the first place, Rather said, “I’ve never quite known the answer to that question. All I know is, it’s the only thing I ever wanted to be, was a reporter.

Dan Rather is returning to CBS News.
Nearly 20 years after stepping down as the anchor of the CBS Evening News, and 18 years after he last appeared on the network, the anchor will return to a CBS program. This time, he will be the subject of an interview on CBS Sunday Morning.
Per a release from CBS, “Lee Cowan talks with former CBS News anchor Dan Rather about his work at CBS and his life in news.”
A source confirms that it will be Rather’s first appearance on a CBS News program since he formally left the network under tumultuous circumstances nearly two decades ago.
Rather said that he was the scapegoat in a scandal over a 2004 report for 60 Minutes II on then-President George W. Bush’s military record, and the anchor subsequently sued the network for breach of contract. The 60 Minutes spin-off was canceled less than a year later.

Update: Supreme Court justices expressed skepticism of Donald Trump’s argument that presidents enjoy broad immunity, but they wrestled with which certain official acts could be shielded from prosecution and which would not.
There were some suggestions of sending the case base to lower courts to decide, on an individual basis, which of the charges against Trump could be deemed as private acts and subject to criminal liability. That is a prospect that could lead to further delay in Trump’s election conspiracy case, perhaps until after the 2024 election.
A number of the justices expressed concerns that their decision in the case would impact future presidents after they leave office and the extent to which they could be subject to criminal prosecution. Justice Samuel Alito hypothesized about political rivals being prosecuted and “a cycle that destabilizes the functioning of our country.”

To paraphrase former White House Chief of Staff Tom Card, whispering in the ear of George W. Bush: a second Cronenberg offspring has made a movie. Whereas her older brother Brandon Cronenberg has more openly sought to replicate the visceral, satirical body horror of their father’s earliest work, offering some delightfully nasty thrills with the likes of Antiviral and Infinity Pool––even as he remained comfortably within his dad’s shadow––Caitlin Cronenberg couldn’t be accused of simply conforming to the expectations that come with her family’s brand-name recognition. The biggest surprise with her directorial debut Humane might be just how comfortably this could sit alongside Blumhouse and Screen Gems shlock at your local multiplex: a well-engineered, single-location thriller that prioritizes bloody, gut-punch twists and turns over the more thoughtful introspection that typically accompanies this in a Cronenberg effort.

By now, we're all familiar with how the rules of engagement for spies work -- on the big screen, at least. But what if all our assumptions about fictional espionage don't fully line up with the murkiness of reality? We all cheered when a rookie James Bond killed a couple of bad guys and received his license to kill, no holds barred. Or when Ethan Hunt goes rogue and is disavowed by his government again and again, only to save the day and be welcomed back with arms open wide. Even in examples based on real-world history, like the upcoming "The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare," filmmakers tend to up the ante considerably and make certain leaps of logic in the pursuit of weaving an entertaining yarn.
But, then again, perhaps fact and fiction aren't always on opposing sides of this battlefield, after all. Nobody's claiming that surfing a tsunami is...

Rapper-turned-country singer Jelly Roll has been sued for trademark infringement by a Philadelphia wedding band called Jellyroll.
As first reported by Court Watch, Jellyroll founder Kurt Titchenell sued the more famous Jelly Roll (born Jason DeFord) in federal court on Monday (April 8th), alleging that his band had been using the name for decades — long before DeFord began putting out music under his current moniker. Titchenell also claims Jelly Roll’s rise in popularity has impacted the ability of “Philly’s favorite wedding band” (as dubbed by Philadelphia Inquirer) to find work while infringing on their trademark for the name, filed in 2010.

“Prior to the Defendant’s recent rise in notoriety, a search of the name of Jellyroll.. returned references to the Plaintiff,” the complaint reads. “Now, any such search on Google returns multiple references to Defendant, perhaps as many as 18-20 references before any...

Jelly Roll is facing a trademark infringement lawsuit brought by the leader of a Pennsylvania-based band that’s been performing at weddings and charity events under the name Jellyroll since 1980.
The suit (highlighted in the Court Watch newsletter) was filed by Kurt L. Titchenell, who’s seeking injunctive relief against Jelly Roll to essentially stop him from using the name going forward. Titchenell’s suit claims that his band first used the Jellyroll name as long ago as March 9, 1980, and they obtained a trademark on Aug. 17, 2010, that was most recently renewed on Dec.

Jenna Bush Hager Enjoys A Celebration
A few years ago, fans of The Today Show saw that Hoda Kotb looked a bit disapproving because her co-host enjoys drinking some alcohol. They talked about SantaCon 2022 and Jenna admitted that before she welcomed her children, she could party with the best of them. However, Hoda doesn’t like to drink a lot. Feeling drunk is not her biggest ambition in life. Today With Hoda & Jenna fans might wonder if that’s when the nickname started.

Living in a country where people's basic human rights are being stripped down or removed on a regular basis, where hate and prejudice are alive and well, where violence can erupt at any moment in almost any location — it feels increasingly strange to call being an American a privileged and lucky thing, but the fact remains that it is. In comparison to the many war-torn countries that have suffered open conflict in their streets at various points in time, Americans haven't had to endure the horror of invasion, occupation, or open warfare as a way of life for many generations, basically since the American Civil War of the 1860s.
This is not to say that Americans are ignorant, but rather especially privileged. Being a part of a country that has generally maintained political, cultural, and military dominance over the world for the last century, America's more thoughtful cinema in relation...

Joe Lieberman, the former Connecticut senator and Al Gore’s Democratic vice presidential nominee in 2000, has died. He was 82.
His family said in a statement that he died due to complications from a fall.
“Senator Lieberman’s love of God, his family and America endured throughout his life of service in the public interest,” his family said. His wife, Hadassah, and other family members were at his side when he died, according to the statement.
At the time of his death, Lieberman was leading an effort to recruit a candidate for the group No Labels, which has been seeking a “unity” ticket to run independently of the Democratic and Republican parties.
Lieberman held to the view that, even in a time of hyper polarization, there was a common ground to be found in politics. His own career reflected that, and even those who criticized his positions found him friendly, kind and polite.

Ronna McDaniel was supposed to be the new star contributor at NBC News. Now her position there is looking increasingly untenable.
NBC News hired the former Republican National Committee chief last week, betting that her recent access to the Trump campaign and Republican politicians would make her a valuable analyst as the 2024 election cycle intensified. But in recent days, her ability to do just that seems unclear. On Monday, Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski suggested on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” that NBC News reconsider its hire. A day earlier, Chuck Todd took to “Meet The Press” to chastise NBC News bosses for making moderator Kristen Welker conduct a news interview she had previously booked with McDaniel now that she was a paid operative of NBC and potentially less able to respond truthfully to hard questions.
It seems very likely that her position at NBC will remain in the news for the immediate future.

Ronna McDaniel is no doubt going to create a lot of sound and fury over at NBC News. Shakespeare could tell you what it’s all going to signify.
NBC News surprised the nation’s legions of news critics Friday when it unveiled a new pact with McDaniel, most recently the chair of the Republican National Committee, and, during that time, a denier of the validity of the 2020 presidential election and a frequent fault-finder when it comes to U.S. media. One of the outlets McDaniel has frequently held up for opprobrium is left-leaning MSNBC, part of NBCUniversal’s news operations.
“It couldn’t be a more important moment to have a voice like Ronna’s on the team,” said Carrie Budoff Brown, the NBC News executive with direct oversight of political coverage and “Meet The Press,” said in a memo Friday, noting that McDaniel would offer “an insider’s...

With the industry names signing on to a letter growing to reportedly near 1,000 (and counting) condemning The Zone of Interest director Jonathan Glazer’s very controversial Oscar acceptance speech, it looks to be taking on a life of its own since the March 10 Academy Awards, where his universally praised movie won the Best International Film Oscar and was nominated for four others including Best Picture.
The speech — in which he seemed, to many at least, to compare Israel’s war on Gaza and the deaths of thousands of Palestinians with the Nazis’ extermination of Jews during World War II — certainly made some in the audience uncomfortable, even uncertain just how to interpret it at the time. It has ignited a firestorm of protest by many, including big names and Academy members like Amy Pascal, Sherry Lansing, Eli Roth, Jennifer Jason Leigh and more. Based on the book by Magnus Montelius, Swedish series “8 Months” seemed more like a fantasy than political thriller. Not for long.
“I read this book on vacation and I was intrigued by the idea that you could use a political consultant to find a new foreign minister. The only problem was that it was about NATO. I thought: ‘Nobody cares about that,’” writer Jens Jonsson tells Variety at Series Mania.
“I was skeptical, but we decided to take a gamble. Suddenly, we were pretending that Sweden joined NATO, that they were wondering if we should have nuclear weapons as well. [Broadcaster] TV4 agreed. After the show was greenlit, Ukraine was invaded by Russia and people started to ask: ‘Should we join?’ And look at us now.”
Sweden became a full member of NATO [North Atlantic Treaty Organization] on March 7, 2024. It now counts 32 countries among its members.
The producers have shared first-look photos with Variety.

The sex trafficking victim mentioned by Sen. Katie Britt during her State of the Union rebuttal is slamming the politician for misrepresenting her story on one of the biggest platforms in the country.
Britt, who is the junior senator from Alabama, delivered the Republican rebuttal following President Biden‘s State of the Union address last week.
The senator said she visited the Texas-Mexico border and met a woman who had “been sex trafficked by the cartels starting at the age of 12.”
Britt claimed, “She told me not just that she was raped every day, but how many times a day she was raped. The cartels put her on a mattress in a shoebox of a room, and they sent men through that door over and over again for hours and hours on end. Bush administration.
In the mock State of the Union address, many notable figures were parodied, including Mikey Day as President Biden, Heidi Gardner as Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green (R-Georgia), Punkie Johnson as Vice President Kamala Harris and Ego Nwodim as CNN’s Abby Phillips.
“Folks, tonight I’m going to cover a lot. There’s going to be a lot of applause. So, Kamala, I hope you didn’t skip leg day, girl. You’re going to be up and down all night,” Day,...
