On July 2, “America’s Got Talent” season 19 continued with the fifth installment of audition episodes. In this initial stage of the competition, each judge is given two “golden buzzer” decisions to make where they can send an act straight through to the live shows. At the end of “Auditions 5,” 9 year old singer Pranysqa Mishra was the kid performer in a sea of impressive kid performers that earned the biggest prize. Watch the full performance in the video above.
Ahead of her performance, Pranysqa was asked who her favorite singers are and when she named some of the biggest voices in music history like Aretha Franklin, Whitney Houston and Tina Turner, the audience ooh’d and aah’d with surprise. Their surprise turned to utter shock when she opened her voice to sing “River Deep Mountain High” and it was clear that her voice was just as deep as that of her icons.

America’s Got Talent has always been partial to pint-sized vocal powerhouses, from Jackie Evancho to Angelica Hale, and Tuesday’s episode added another name to that illustrious list — Pranysqa Mishra.
The nine-year-old singer from Tampa, Fla., was the last to take the stage, but there’s no question that she left the biggest impression on the judges, earning a well-deserved Golden Buzzer from Heidi Klum for her performance of Tina Turner’s “River Deep Mountain High.”

Who will win Record of the Year at the 2025 Grammys? This award goes to the artists, producers, and engineers of the year’s best single. That’s where this differs from Song of the Year, which goes specifically to songwriters. Though this award is not technically a popularity contest, commercial success is typically a major factor, like Miley Cyrus‘s reigning champion “Flowers,” a blockbuster that spent several weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100. So will the next winner be a big hit as well? Scroll down to see our official racetrack odds, which are calculated based on the combined predictions of Gold Derby users. The odds are always changing, so we’ll be updating this list as the season progresses.
For most of history there were five Grammy nominees in the Record of the Year category, same as there were for Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best New Artist.

Having been in the business for almost 50 years, gracing our television and cinema screens in shows like “Moesha” and “Abbott Elementary” and films “The Mighty Quinn” and “Sister Act 2: Back in the Habit,” as well as the theatrical stage in the original production of “Dreamgirls,” Sheryl Lee Ralph should be considered a recognizable figure in the entertainment lexicon. And yet, in a recent piece for the Los Angeles Times, the Emmy-winning actress claims she’s repeatedly been mistaken for others.
“There was a point after ‘Dreamgirls’ [on Broadway] when I was getting on a plane, and someone was like, ‘Hi, Whitney.’ ‘I’m not Whitney Houston,’” she said she told the fellow passenger. “Time goes by, then the next person says, ‘Oh, Ms. Houston.’ ‘I am not Whitney Houston.’ Plane ride goes by, and the [flight attendant] comes with a bottle of wine and says, ‘I just want to say how much I adore you,...

Here's a classic from Hollywood's "Nobody Knows Anything" files (a three-word bit of industry wisdom coined by "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" screenwriter William Goldman in his book "Adventures in the Screen Trade").
You didn't need to know much of anything about the film business in the fall of 1992 to predict the box office success of Mick Jackson's "The Bodyguard." Kevin Costner was at the height of his movie stardom coming off the previous year's "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves" and "JFK," while his co-star Whitney Houston (making her big-screen acting debut) was one of the most popular recording artists on the planet. The film would have to be an all-time turkey to fall short of profitability.
Based on a 17-year-old screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan, "The Bodyguard" underwhelmed critics, but connected strongly enough with its target audience to pull in $122 million at the domestic box office (on a reasonable $25 million budget). The film,...

Even young musical geniuses need breaks every now and then.

Rennie made headlines earlier this year when McPhee's TikTok video went viral, and again when he played the drums at one of his dad's shows and that video went viral. Then a month later, Rennie went viral again on social media when he played the drums while McPhee sang, "I Will Always Love You."
"He's taking a little hiatus," Foster told People. "He hasn't really been drumming for the past month or two."
Foster, 74, explained that there's no actual reason he's taking a break, other than he's just a child enjoying touring with his parents.

It is a plight common to most professional songwriters: Everyone knows their songs, but few people know who they are.
And it’s hard to think of a more vivid example of that syndrome than Gerry Goffin, Carole King’s late ex-husband and longtime writing partner, who was responsible for the lyrics of such timeless songs as “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow?,” “You Make Me Feel Like a Natural Woman,” “Up on the Roof,” “The Loco-Motion,” “One Fine Day” and dozens more — he wrote the lyrics for a total of 114 Billboard Hot 100 hits for artists including Aretha Franklin, Barbra Streisand, Diana Ross, Rod Stewart, Natalie Cole, James Taylor, Ray Charles, Whitney Houston, Kylie Minogue and of course, King.

Tom Cruise may not be the paragon of fatherhood for Suri Cruise, but if the two hadn’t been distant, the Top Gun: Maverick star would probably approve of his daughter’s romantic choices.

Chlöe Bailey is opening up about her music and why her songs are still categorized as R&b despite venturing into different genres.
Bailey shared in a new interview that no matter what type of music she makes, her songs will always be classified as R&b and not pop.
“Any music I do will easily and quickly be categorized as R&b because I’m a Black woman,” Bailey said in an interview with Nylon. “If someone who didn’t have my skin tone made the same music, it would be in the pop categories. That’s just the way it’s always been in life.”
Bailey says that Whitney Houston is one of her idols and takes cues from the path she paved.

At one of the heights of his career, following films like “Malcolm X,” “Philadelphia,” and “Devil in a Blue Dress,” Denzel Washington starred in a remake of the 1947 Christmas movie, “The Bishop’s Wife.” Directed by the late great Penny Marshall, the remake was called “The Preacher’s Wife” and centered on a struggling Baptist pastor, played by Courtney B. Vance, and an angel come down to help, but who ends up focusing more on the pastor’s wife. Marshall cast this role to another megawatt talent of the time, Whitney Houston. Discussing his career with Chaz Ebert at the American Black Film Festival in Miami, per People, Denzel Washington remembered the concern he had for Houston while making the film.
“I felt like I always wanted to protect her,” he said. Ebert acknowledged how this was present in the film. She said, “There was a vulnerability that you saw.”

Kevin Costner has respected Sarah Ferguson, the Duchess of York, for decades. Why? Because of what happened when she put him in touch with Princess Diana about starring in a Bodyguard sequel. Ahead, what the “cool” now-64-year-old British royal did that impressed Costner. Plus, how the Yellowstone alum found himself talking to Prince William about Diana years after her death.

Kevin Costner can’t imagine doing “The Bodyguard” with anyone other than Whitney Houston.
Reflecting on his experience starring in and producing the 1992 romantic drama, the “Horizons” actor and filmmaker told Howard Stern Tuesday that Houston beat out the likes of Michelle Pfeiffer and Julia Roberts because she’s the one that could sing.
“It could’ve been Michelle Pfeiffer, it could’ve been Julia Roberts, it could’ve been anybody, but when I looked at it I thought, ‘No, it should be Whitney Houston,’” the “Yellowstone” star said on Stern’s SiriusXM show of the Grammy winner, who had at that point never acted in a film. “For me, it was so easy to go, ‘Well this is the most beautiful girl, this is the one who can sing. This is the girl.’”

Zachary Travis Didn’T Know what American Idol was when he auditioned in 2005, because he had spent most of the past decade in a youth correctional facility. Inmates there weren’t allowed to watch television, he says, except on the day of the September 11 attacks. But Travis — who was first incarcerated at the age of 11, for reasons he’s not yet ready to discuss in a public forum — found strength in Christina Aguilera’s ballads of self-love. He says that he connected with the “pain, sorrow, and heartache” in the singer’s octave-defying voice.

While he may be best known for features such as “The King of Scotland” and “The Mauritanian,” Kevin Macdonald has directed a number of documentaries about well-known figures, including 2012’s Bob Marley doc “Marley,” 2018’s revelatory “Whitney” about Whitney Houston and last year’s “High & Low: John Galliano.” His latest film, “Klitschko: More Than a Fight” — which opens the 2024 Sheffield Doc/Fest on Wednesday (and lands on Sky Documentaries in August) — is a little different.
At its center is Vitali Klitschko, the Ukrainian heavyweight boxing legend who, alongside his brother Wladimir, dominated the sport for a decade starting in the mid-2000s. But unlike Macdonald’s other documentaries, “More Than a Fight” follows its subject in the present day and in an entirely different role, as mayor of Kyiv, the capital city at the epicenter of the deadly ongoing war with Russia. One of the best things you can do if you want to learn about a singer is to read about their introduction to music. For example, Sabrina Carpenter revealed a lot when she discussed one of the first songs she learned. Notably, the song is so much more famous than the musical that inspired it.
Sabrina Carpenter loves a song from a forgotten musical
“At Last” is a love song that first appeared in the cute but mostly forgotten 1940s musical film Sun Valley Serenade. The tune is a lot better than the film itself. Modern audiences are probably most familiar with “At Last” through Etta James’ soulful cover of the song, which has appeared in many movies and commercials. The tune still resonates because it manages to be loving and sensual at the same time.
During a 2018 interview with Teen Vogue, Carpenter discussed her reaction to James’ version of “At Last.

More than 30 unhoused were removed Friday from outside of Sunset Sound, the iconic recording studio used by such artists as Elton John, Taylor Swift, The Rolling Stones and Van Halen.
The long-standing encampment outside of the Hollywood studio has been a source of ire in the neighborhood, while the owner has reportedly complained about sidewalk fires and break-ins. The clean-up was orchestrated by Inside Safe, Mayor Karen Bass’ initiative to remove the unhoused off of Los Angeles streets and into city-leased housing.

When Dolly Parton moved to Nashville, people became enamored not only with her unique voice but with her talent as a songwriter. Parton prides herself on her lyrics and has received well-earned credit for her ability to write. One Nashville music publisher saw a glaring problem with her writing, though.
A Nashville music publisher said Dolly Parton had a weakness as a songwriter
As Parton’s career took off, she received praise for her ability to write. Her songs were complex, emotional, and evocative of her childhood in Tennessee. When she wrote, it was clear that the product was a Dolly Parton song. This, according to record producer Clarence Selman, was a problem.
“Her major weakness as a writer is that she has so stylized her songs by the time she’s written them, that it would lead another artist to believe that they’re only for Dolly Parton,” Selman...

Kevin Costner has been connected to a lot of projects throughout his tenure as an actor, with one of his most remarkable performances being that of John Dutton in Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone lore. This is why, when fans found out the saga was going to get cut short because he was leaving to helm his own Horizon saga, they were nothing short of devastated.

That being mentioned, there has been a lot of controversy about how Costner was going to leave the lore and what was to happen to his character. And, the most recent solution to this problem, shared by the John Dutton portrayer himself, is a completely different one than the ones told before and is one that might as well end up upsetting the Western’s fans.

“Before I left home, I had already made up in my mind, if Reba McEntire turns her chair, I am going to say Reba,” reveals Asher HaVon, who won Season 25 of “The Voice” on Tuesday night. The 31-year-old from Selma, Alabama defeated Josh Sanders, Bryan Olesen, Nathan Chester and Karen Waldrup in the finale, securing Reba her first victory as a coach. Watch Asher’s video interview with Gold Derby above.
Asher says working with Reba was “an out of body experience.” He explains, “I don’t think I’ve ever received so much encouragement and so much love and so much wisdom about this industry in my life. She literally saw me where I was, took me in, molded me and then sent me right back out. I was able to do exactly what I needed to do.”
After host Carson Daly announced Asher as the winner, Reba rushed the stage to join him.

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.
We’ve compiled a list of music-centric biopics available to stream should the urge overcome viewers.

Kevin Costner was at the top of his career back in 1992, having climbed the ladder of success with his critically acclaimed Dances with Wolves. Meanwhile, pop star Whitney Houston was busy making her way to the top with her magical voice and electric personality. And in true Hollywood fashion, despite orbiting in their own spheres, Costner and Whitney came together in the 1990s to create an iconic masterpiece that still resonates with the audience, The Bodyguard.

Also Huston’s acting debut, the film intensified their popularity and took them to new heights in their already glorious careers. But really it was Costner’s persistence and efforts that helped the movie become a cult classic and his childhood friend Huston to become a Grammy-winning star.

Throughout his entire career, Kevin Costner has starred in multiple award-winning projects, a majority of which have earned tremendous acclaim, like Yellowstone. But one of his works met with such extraordinary heights of success that all his other pieces are yet to surpass. This project is none other than his Western masterpiece directorial debut movie from 1990, Dances with Wolves.

Not only did this film grant him three of his first-ever and only Oscar nominations and two wins, but it also launched him as a household name in the entertainment industry. But as much as his directing and acting skills played a major role in the film’s success, the truth is that the 1990 masterpiece just may have never been made had it not been for Costner’s ‘pain in the a—’ friend Michael Blake!

Music is one of the main keys to the success of a movie, as it helps to set the tone and enhances the viewers’ experience. It can even happen that films become overshadowed by the songs written and recorded specifically for them, and people tend to forget that they were originally soundtracks that lost any association with their origins.
Here are 5 dramas surpassed in popularity by their music themes, according to Reddit.
Dangerous Minds (1995)
Michelle Pfeiffer’s underrated gem presumably comes first in this respect, as everybody knows Gangsta's Paradise by Coolio, while the movie is unfairly forgotten. In fact, the story of a teacher taking up a job in East Palo Alto, a racially segregated and economically deprived city, is worth a try, apart from its cultish main song.
Chariots of Fire (1981)
“More people know the chariots of fire song than have actually seen the movie,” fairly admits @goldbloodedinthe404.

Kevin Costner was honored with France’s Order of Arts and Letter at the Cannes Film Festival on Sunday, ahead of the Out of Competition world premiere of his two-part Western epic Horizon: An American Saga.
“You represent the America of wide spaces, the America of free minds, the America of cinema and the love of culture that we share on both sides of the Atlantic,” French Culture Minister Rachida Dati said in a speech paying tribute to the actor.
She went on to declare, “I will always love you” ahead of pinning the honorary ribbon medal to Costner’s white suit, in reference to his role in 1992 blockbuster The Bodyguard opposite Whitney Houston and its record-breaking hit track ‘I Always Love You’.

Plot: The life of singer Amy Winehouse (Marisa Abela), including her troubled relationship with her ex-husband Blake Fielder-Civil (Jack O’Connell) and father (Eddie Marsan) and her struggles with addiction.
Review: When making a biopic about a famously troubled yet brilliant artist, there’s a fine line to walk when it comes to juggling the story of their art with the depiction of their addictions. Movies like Rocket Man or Walk the Line did it well, but they told ultimately triumphant stories about people overcoming those addictions. When the person succumbs, it can be dicier. I remember the Whitney Houston biopic, I Wanna Dance With Somebody, tried to do both but spent way too much time with its star miming along to Houston songs. Bohemian Rhapsody turned Freddie Mercury’s life into a PG-13 cartoon.

“Initially I did say no,” admits Golden Globe nominated actress Chrissy Metz while discussing her participation as Poodle Moth on the Fox reality TV series “The Masked Singer.” “I didn’t think I could do it. I was like, ‘I don’t know if I’m the girl for the job.’ Also, I run hot, especially in my face. How am I going to have a mask on and sing in the way that I’m supposed to sound good? It took some convincing. Ultimately, I realized it was really fun, challenging and liberating.” Watch her exclusive video interview with Gold Derby senior editor Denton Davidson above.
Metz was unmasked as Poodle Moth on Wednesday night’s quarter-finals episode of Season 11. She went home in fourth place as Clock, Goldfish and Gumball advanced to next week’s semi-finals. Panelist Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg was the only one who guessed her identity.

Ariana Grande hasn’t performed live much these last few years, but on Monday, she delivered a rare set at the 2024 Met Gala. Obviously, that’s a hard (practically impossible) ticket to get, but the pop star has since shared a bunch of videos from her set on TikTok.
Grande opened her seven-song set in the most apt way possible, with a cover of the 1959 Sleeping Beauty tune, “Once Upon a Dream,” to match the Met Museum Costume Institute’s spring exhibit, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion.”

Pop music history is filled with roads not take. Madonna’s “Like a Virgin” could have been recorded by one of many other artists. The musical geniuses who wrote the track revealed what they thought of Madonna’s take on “Like a Virgin” and why they believed in the song when nobody else did.
Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin’ has an interesting connection to Whitney Houston
While “Like a Virgin” is one of Madonna’s defining songs, she had no role in writing it. Instead, the track was co-written by Billy Steinberg and Tom Kelly. The songwriting duo also penned classic hits such as “So Emotional,” Divinyl’s “I Touch Myself,” and “True Colors” by Cyndi Lauper. During an interview with Songwriter Universe, the songwriters revealed that many artists turned down “Like a Virgin” before Madonna embraced it.
