The classic TV show “Matlock” is coming back to screens next year – but with a twist. Kathy Bates will take on the lead role as a lady lawyer named Madeline “Matty” Matlock in CBS’s reimagined version of the legal drama.
Matty is joining a prestigious law firm later in life, looking to prove that experience counts just as much as youth. As a woman in her 70s, she’ll show viewers that older people still have a lot to offer. “I wanted to write a character who challenges ageism,” says producer Jennie Snyder Urman.
Bates, who is 76 herself, thinks Matty’s role is long overdue. “You never see women my age as the lead on TV,” she points out. Her character will have depth, taking on complex cases and corrupt bosses week after week.
Helping Matty in the courtroom is Olympia, played by Skye P. Marshall. Olympia is a senior attorney,...

As broadcast networks continue to mine familiar IP for its new offerings, CBS is rolling out an updated version of the 1986-1995 legal drama Matlock. Taking over for the late Andy Griffith in the title role is Academy Award winner Kathy Bates. The new Matlock, originally set for a 2023 bow, will finally premiere this fall, but the hype is already building. The pilot was reportedly one of the best CBS execs had seen, and recurring star Beau Bridges has been loving watching Bates work her magic. “She’s going to be great in this,” he told Deadline in March. “She’s really funny. It’s hard for me to keep a straight face with her. She’s great.” Here’s the need-to-know info about the new Matlock. The network has officially set its premiere date CBS announced on July 13 that Matlock will premiere on Sunday, September 22 at 8/7c. Find out...

CBS isn’t eager for summer to end. The Eye network has opted to push its premiere week — normally held the third week of September — to mid-October, with one big exception: “Survivor.”
The landmark unscripted series is indeed CBS’ sole September “Survivor,” premiering its 47th season on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 8 p.m. Et. CBS will also air sneak peeks of two more entertainment series during the month: Newbie “Matlock,” starring Kathy Bates, will get an special early premiere on Sunday, Sept. 22, while new competition skein “The Summit” will also get a Sunday sneak, on Sept. 29.
But for the most part, CBS will wait until the week of October 14 to take the bow off its fall 2024 primetime package. In doing so, it runs the risk of competing for attention right when the presidential campaign could be at its apex.

Domo arigato, Mr. Bob O. We all know Steve Carell as Michael Scott, but before he landed the role of World’s Best Boss at Dunder-Mifflin, several other names were in the running. But one standout is Bob Odenkirk, who had a comedy background to be sure but admits his particular style wouldn’t have fit The Office.
Appearing on Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey’s Office Ladies podcast, Odenkirk explained why he didn’t get the lead role on The Office, which would eventually land Steve Carell six Emmy nominations for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series. “I am, in a strange way, a very earnest person for a person in comedy. I am oddly earnest, and…it’s one of the reasons I think Steve Carell is a better, you know — is the one who got the role.” He added that Carell has a leg up – hopefully...

As Sam Raimi's Evil Dead universe continues to grow with spin-offs inbound from Sébastien Vaniček and Francis Galluppi, the horror maestro is getting ready to return to his genre stomping ground and scare the bejeezus out of us once more with a new chiller. According to Deadline, the Drag Me To Hell director has signed up to direct and produce Send Help, an original horror thriller, for 20th Century Studios.
Based on an original script by Baywatch writing duo Damian Shannon and Mark Swift, Send Help is believed to be an island-set two-hander that splits the difference between Rob Reiner's Misery adaptation and Robert Zemeckis' Cast Away. As 'X-meets-y' pitches go, it's a doozy to be sure — even if it does conjure a particularly harrowing mental image of Kathy Bates taking a mallet to our beloved Wilson. It's worth noting however that, at this stage, Send Help hasn't officially been greenlit,...

Although 2023 Emmy nominations voters were able to view the entire second season of “The Bear” while judging the merits of its first, the team behind the FX series did not employ a similar strategy in 2024. Nonetheless, the newly released third season will still influence TV academy members as they spend part of August deciding whether season two is worthy of any wins. The latest episodes have already impacted the mindsets of Gold Derby’s 2024 Emmy predictors, who have collectively boosted its odds in several categories over the past week.

A Family Affair, the new Netflix original on the streaming platform, is yet another addition to the romantic comedy genre that explores two people from opposite walks of life falling in love. There are obstacles in the form of families that could force them to split. This sort of romantic comedy, if made well, turns out to a good crowd puller. A Family Affair is a clichéd film but is elevated by the actors and the characters they play, who are confused and complex and have many things to discover about themselves as they embark on the journey of love and life.

Remember 2012's The Paperboy? In the Lee Daniels-directed cult film, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron sizzled together on screen in a sexy, sweaty affair that tripled air conditioner sales worldwide. 12 years later, their romantic reunion in A Family Affair is far more tepid. As anyone with eyes can attest, Kidman and Efron are just as hot now as they were back then, and they still share plenty of chemistry this time. In fact, that's one of the few reasons why anyone would recommend this latest romcom from director Richard Lagravenese.
But the problem is that A Family Affair isn't just a romcom. It's also a coming-of-age story for Zara (Zoey King), a coming-of-middle-age story for her mother Brooke (Kidman), and a slapstick himbo sex comedy for Chris (Efron) as well. Chris says his first date with Brooke feels like "nine dates in one" and Carrie Solomon's debut script is just as jam-packed,...

As a categorical rule, I watch everything starring Zac Efron for research purposes. Of course, the last time I saw him was in The Iron Claw, a movie in a completely different ball game than the one we’re talking about today. I’ve got to admit that the 36-year-old still has the same charm that drew me to him at 10/12/13, watching him in High School Musical, and then everything else that followed. Now, of course, I’m not going to make this review all about the guy when two stunning women star alongside him, but I’ve got to admit, I feel the need to defend this man for seemingly no reason at all. A Family Affair opens with a montage of Chris Cole, the “it” guy of today. An actor known for his sci-fi action films is about to embark on the journey to make a third of...

Plot: A surprising romance kicks off comic consequences for a young woman, her mother and her movie star boss as they face the complications of love, sex, and identity.
Review: When the trailer for A Family Affair debuted, I immediately felt bad for the careers of everyone involved. Nicole Kidman slumming it in a romcom, Zac Efron following up the excellent The Iron Claw with superficial dreck, and Joey King marring her career upswing. Not to mention the Oscar credibility of Kathy Bates. But something happened when I watched the film. While it is far from great, A Family Affair is better than I expected. Because it develops characters and does not rely on tropes and cliches but instead uses the formula of the genre, A Family Affair is an example of what romantic comedies could be if given a little room to breathe. aThere isn’t much I detest more than a lazy, by-the-book romantic comedy that plays it too safe. That was my initial fear when watching A Family Affair, a Mrs. Robinson-inspired Netflix streamer where two attractive people with a significant age gap find “love” while being rich, white, and all at the same time.
However, I was taken aback by the chemistry and the dynamic interactions between the three leads. In particular, the brother-sister-esque comedic timing between young stars Joey King and Zac Efron is always amusing and often hilarious. That alone keeps A Family Affair entertaining enough to carry the audience to the end.
It’s unfortunate that the script delves into third-act clichés straight from the rom-com playbook, step by step.

The original title of the new romantic comedy A Family Affair was the much-edgier MotherF*&#er, and despite being very funny in terms of the basic story of an older woman who starts an affair with the younger movie-star boss of her 24-year-old daughter, it probably sets off wrong expectations for what is a smart, character-driven romcom that serves up a delicious cast with a witty script and engaging situation for all. The generic title gets more to the point as this all directly involves three people in a multi-generational coming-of-age tale for all in their search for personal happiness.
Netflix actually is using that original title in its ad line for the film, calling it “A MotherF*&#er of a Love Story,” and that says it all. Coming on the heels of Amazon’s rom-com The Idea of You — in which a fortysomething single mom (Anne Hathaway) finds unexpected...

This all very well could be a fever dream, or a slightly buzzed hallucination. Such are the thoughts that pass as the white wine is uncorked — let’s be real, it’s a twist-off — and “A Family Affair” opens with real-life Zac Efron red carpet footage of the actor at TIFF. But this isn’t TMZ, this is a scripted Netflix rom-com. And we love it.
Directed by “Beautiful Creatures” helmer Richard Lagravenese from a script by Carrie Solomon, “A Family Affair” reunites Efron with his “The Paper Boy” co-star Nicole Kidman, and adds in beloved everywoman Joey King to make a different kind of unconventional love triangle. Both Efron and King’s characters just want Kidman to be a supportive mother type: One as her actual mom, and the other as a Milf.

Nora Ephron’s influence is certainly felt throughout Richard Lagravenese’s new romantic comedy, in everything from the cozy sweaters and the luxuriously lived-in interiors to the cross-cut phone conversations in which our loveably neurotic characters try to figure out this crazy thing called love. And while you’d never mistake it for the real deal—the writing isn’t quite smart enough and it’s visually rizz-less in that typical “made for streaming” way—A Family Affair makes for a pleasant enough addition to the recent rom-com resurgence.

If you want an incredibly charming and immensely talented cast in a run-of-the-mill rom-com, then Netflix’s latest film, A Family Affair, is for you. By describing it as a run-of-the-mill rom-com, I don’t want to say that the film is not entertaining as I did have some decent laughs, and Zac Efron and Nicole Kidman were great in their respective roles, but I felt zero emotional connection to everyone in the film.
Directed by Richard Lagravenese from a screenplay by Carrie Solomon, A Family Affair follows the story of Zara, a young woman who works as an assistant for a self-obsessed film star, Chris Cole, who she hates. If that’s not enough, she finds out that her boss and mother are secretly dating each other, which sends her up the wall.

Netflix is set to release its latest romantic comedy, “A Family Affair,” starring Nicole Kidman, Zac Efron, and Joey King, on Friday, June 28. The film, which reunites Kidman and Efron on screen after their 2012 collaboration in “The Paperboy,” promises to deliver a fresh take on the romantic comedy genre with its intergenerational storyline and star-studded cast.
Directed by Richard Lagravenese and written by Carrie Solomon, “A Family Affair” tells the story of Zara (Joey King), a young woman working as a personal assistant to famous actor Chris Cole (Zac Efron). The plot takes an unexpected turn when Chris falls for Zara’s mother, Brooke (Nicole Kidman), a widowed memoirist struggling with writer’s block.
For Kidman, the role represents a welcome shift from her recent dramatic performances. “I was begging to have some fun and to be considered for some sort of romantic comedy at some point,” Kidman shared in a recent interview.

“The Great Lillian Hall” reunites three “American Horror Story” actresses to deliver a tour de force in TV movies. Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, and Lily Rabe all star in this HBO TV Movie, directed by Michael Cristofer, that follows the careers of fictional Broadway actress Lillian Hall.
It’s Lange who plays Lillian and the veteran actress has turned in another masterclass in acting. She has always been a commanding screen presence and that doesn’t change here as she depicts a legendary actress as a triumph on stage but a nervous wreck in rehearsals while she battles with early dementia. It’s always a treat watching icons play icons (Lange did this again in “Feud: Bette and Joan”) and while Lillian is fictional, the impact is no less felt. Critics agree, this could be Lange’s greatest performance yet.

Grab your magnifying glass, deerstalker hat, and pipe, fellow TV Fanatics, because a new Holmes-inspired show called Watson is coming to television screens everywhere as a midseason treat for the 2024-2025 broadcast schedule.
Interestingly, this will be the second CBS series to adapt the Sherlock stories, the first being Elementary, starring Jonny Lee Miller as Sherlock Holmes and Lucy Liu as Dr. Joan Watson.
The upcoming series, Watson, won't take place in the same universe, but as it shares similar elements, it'll be an amazing new show for audiences who miss the 2012 series that ended after seven seasons in 2019.
Some viewers might find the premise a touch different from the usual murder mystery plot in a good Sherlock Holmes story, but don't worry -- we're here to tell you everything we know so far!

Matlock (1986-1995) featured the late great Andy Griffith as attorney Ben Matlock, who solved cases and caught perpetrators in a charming, unassuming, and disarming way.
It was one of the most popular shows of the period and is still enjoyed by many in reruns and on streaming apps today, which is why the Matlock reboot has been much anticipated.
This new CBS crime drama based on it features the following season 1 cast members and characters.

Zac Efron, Nicole Kidman and Joey King celebrated the premiere of their new romantic comedy, A Family Affair, in Los Angeles.
The co-stars hit the red carpet at the Egyptian Theatre for the film’s launch event. Efron, 36, wore a sharp gray suit with a fitted black shirt and black dress shoes, while King wore a sheer black skirt and top adorned with flowers.
In the movie, Efron plays Chris Cole, a womanizing movie star whose new assistant, Zara, portrayed by 24-year-old King, quits working for him due to his demanding behavior. Since premiering on May 31 (the exact cutoff date for 76th Emmys eligibility), HBO’s “The Great Lillian Hall” has become an undeniably strong contender in this year’s wide-open Best TV Movie race. In the past week alone, its Gold Derby program category odds jumped from 40/1 to 18/1 while lead and supporting cast members Jessica Lange and Kathy Bates both moved closer to predicted nominee status.
“The Great Lillian Hall” has found some of its greatest support among our team of in-house editors, more than half of whom are officially on board with it and Lange being nominated. Bates – who held 100/1 general odds until last Thursday and now sits at 62/1 – is on track to at least crack said subgroup’s movie/limited supporting actress lineup very soon.
Our editors’ consensus picks have indeed changed quite a bit in the last week, with the most noticeable developments involving newly predicted winners Richard Gadd and Claire Foy.

The original Matlock was a long-running network TV series in the 1980s and 1990s. It starred TV legend Andy Griffith as attorney Ben Matlock.
Debuting in 1986 on NBC, Matlock remained on that network until 1992, when it moved to ABC, where it remained until it wrapped up in 1995.
Matlock was a popular legal procedural created by Dean Hargrove, who was also behind the original Perry Mason.
Ben Matlock was a defense attorney who often proved his clients innocent, usually in dramatic courtroom moments.
Since early 2023, a reboot of Matlock has been in the works, not on the original show's networks but on CBS.
The other big change is that the Matlock character in this version is a woman, played by Kathy Bates.

(This Interview Contains Spoilers About The HBO Film)
For Mac Quayle, composing the score for the HBO film project “The Great Lillian Hall” proved something of a departure from his most recent projects, which have included nine seasons of the FX anthology “American Horror Story,” the Fox/ABC procedural “9-1-1” and the Netflix drama “Leave the World Behind.” “Lillian Hall” tells the story of a legendary Broadway star (Jessica Lange) fearfully facing the ticking clock of time while doggedly working to defy it following a dementia diagnosis. In talking to director Michael Cristofer about the music, “we recognized this is an intimate story about Lillian Hall and this sudden dementia that she’s experiencing,” Quayle recalls. “We thought that (when) it needed some music that it shouldn’t be too big, it needed to have a little more intimate sound. On May 31, 2024, “The Great Lillian Hall” premiered on HBO to predominantly positive reviews from critics. In the film, Oscar, Emmy and Tony winner Jessica Lange plays the titular character, a Broadway star battling dementia as she prepares for a big role on the Great White Way. The movie reunites Lange with her “American Horror Story” co-stars Kathy Bates and Lily Rabe, who play Lillian’s assistant and daughter, respectively. Pierce Brosnan and Jesse Williams also star.
The HBO movie is loosely inspired by actress Marian Seldes, who was the aunt of the film’s screenwriter, Elisabeth Seldes Annacone. Michael Cristofer directed the movie for HBO Films. Read our full review round-up below.

When Emmy voters get spooked, it’s often frighteningly good. Take a tour through our photo gallery below featuring 14 of the Emmys’ scariest acting wins in the history of the TV Academy.
Of course we had to include the various wins from “American Horror Story.” The horror franchise’s various installments have thus far reaped victories for Kathy Bates as a hate-spewing witch and James Cromwell as a deranged Nazi doctor, plus Jessica Lange makes our list twice as both a murderous neighbor and a malicious sorceress.
Also making the list twice is Michael Emerson, who scared the pants off us as a serial killer in “The Practice” before making our skin crawl as the mysterious leader of the Others on “Lost.”
Another multiple-murderer to make the cut is John Lithgow for his terrifying guest role in “Dexter”.

It’s a fairly rare weekend at the box office when there are five new wide releases, but it’s even rare when none of those movies even crack the top six. Read on for the weekend box office report.
After one of the worst Memorial Day weekends in decades, the transition weekend between May and June wasn’t going to be much better with none of the new releases opening in more than 2,000 theaters. That wasn’t helped by the fact that Disney, the one major studio in the mix, decided to dump their latest well-reviewed movie into a few hundred theaters with very little fanfare.
After settling for second place over Memorial Day, Sony Pictures’ animated “The Garfield Movie” moved into first place with an estimated $14 million, down just 42% from its three-day opening weekend, to bring its domestic total to $51.6 million. Overseas, the Chris Pratt-starring family film...

It’s another bummer of a weekend at the summer of box office, where overall domestic revenue looks to be down 69 percent — no, not a typo — from a year ago as Hollywood and theater owners continue to grapple with a lack of big event pics. And year-to-date revenue is now down 24 percent over last year.
For some, there is reason to smile. Alcon and Sony’s The Garfield Movie easily purred past George Miller’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga to top the weekend chart with an estimated $14 million for a domestic tally of $51.6 million. Alcon fully financed the $60 million film, which crossed the $100 million mark overseas for a global tally of $152.2 million.
Furiosa, costing a pricey $168 million to produce, fell a steep 59 percent to $10.8 million, dashing hopes that it could rebound after a disappointing Memorial Day opening. The dystopian epic is also stalling overseas, where it took in only...

If the summer box office is ever going to heat up, it’ll have to wait a while longer. In a weekend being led by holdovers, Sony’s “The Garfield Movie” looks to overtake “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” for first place on domestic charts.
The marketplace continues to be dire overall, but Sony is doing well for itself. The studio is also putting out the manga adaptation “Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle” through its anime banner Crunchyroll. Playing in 1,086 locations (including showtimes in a few Imax auditoriums), the high school sports film earned $1.9 million across Friday and preview screenings and looks to take sixth place on domestic charts. It’s just the latest example of how anime has found a niche but dedicated theatrical audience in North America. Not that stateside will make or break “Haikyu!!,” which released in its native Japan back in February and stands as the second-highest...

In “The Great Lillian Hall,” Jessica Lange plays a veteran theater actress — a legend of the Broadway stage — who is always putting on airs, reciting bits from her favorite roles, and carrying on in the tradition of fabled actresses who get known for playing characters like Blanche DuBois because they’ve actually got a lot of Blanche in them. (They believe their own illusions.) Yet just because Lillian Hall is a flamboyant grand dame doesn’t mean that she’s not showing you who she is. Lange, a beauty at 75, has a face that has only grown more expressive with the years. In “The Great Lillian Hall,” that face is a map of emotion we read. Even when Lillian is being deceptive (even when she’s deceiving herself), the majesty of her feelings shines through.

It is a sad state of affairs in Hollywood when you can have such talented actors as Diane Keaton, Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard, but the best you can do is stick them in boomer-baiting forgettable comedic contrivances like Summer Camp, the latest in a long line of movies for Keaton, who also is a producer on it, in which she is cast with female peers of similar age to mix slapschtick with attempted pathos and senior romance. It is the kind of formula you can sell with a simple pitch: Take three beloved septuagenarian Oscar winning and nominated stars and send them back to the summer camp where they bonded as kids. Hilarity and hijinks ensue, along with giving each a later-in-life regret or dead husband to add a bit of drama to the proceedings. Bingo! The mid-week matinees will be sellouts!

The star hopes for some more of that Book Club magic although she’s the weakest link in a trio buoyed by Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard
The many gasps that met the $100m-plus box office total for 2018’s Book Club were not quite shared by all. The film, a frothy comedy led by four women over the age of 65, might have been an outlier at the time but it proved that once again, when smartly catered to, underserved audiences will come out en masse, a more inevitable result than many seem to think. When Bridesmaids proved this with younger women back in 2011, the industry was lethargic in its response, a wave of adjacent green lights failing to come as expected but Book Club had an instant impact, a string of grey-hued imitators in its wake.
But luck ran out a little faster than expected. Jane Fonda’s 80 for Brady...

If Hollywood aims to bring older audiences back to theaters by making movies about them, I submit Summer Camp as a case study in what works (Eugene Levy!) and what definitely does not — painfully flat attempts at wackiness being the chief offender. Veering between strained slapstick and thoughtful tête-à-têtes, this boomer-focused reunion comedy strands a game cast of accomplished septuagenarians in a mostly laugh-free zone of zip lines and predictable beats.
Director Castille Landon’s screenplay offers some well-crafted dialogue, but it never adds up to anything resembling momentum. Landon, whose previous features include the Katherine Heigl starrer Fear of Rain and a couple of entries in the After series of romance movies, does get the setting right in a story that brings together three lifelong friends at the sleepaway camp where they first met. The friends are played by Diane Keaton (who also serves as a producer), Kathy Bates and Alfre Woodard.

It happens to many of us above a certain age. You wake up one day, and realize that your life involves neither your childhood besties, nor the carefree bliss you once took for granted. With that in mind, Castille Landon’s wearisome comedy “Summer Camp” ponders, what if there was a way to awaken our inner child and reestablish our priorities later in life through some fun and play? It’s surely a worthy enough premise for a good time, but one “Summer Camp” squanders through dull jokes, an uninspiring story without any real stakes and an overall phony feeling that the film can’t shake.
Indeed, “Summer Camp” often seems only as authentic as a high-end glamping site, when it unsuccessfully tries to convince the audience that it’s the real deal about the virtues of letting your hair down once in a while — a teaching that the film hammers on,...
