Devil on Campus, the 2024 Lifetime crime thriller is based on the story of infamous Lawrence Ray, who manipulated several of his daughter’s friends for years into doing unthinkable things, from extortion to prostitution. There’s already a true crime documentary titled Stolen Youth about the cult leader. This time, though, it’s getting a Lifetime treatment. If you’ve watched Lifetime movies before, then you know that these movies can be described as sort of anti-arthouse. They are always overly dramatic, filled with loud acting, meandering narratives, and botched climaxes. At best, they’re guilty pleasure; at worst, they’re sheer torture, although I personally never find a Lifetime movie to be boring. Devil on Campus, despite the story and its utterly serious context, is a true-blue Lifetime movie for sure, except it has one thing that most of these movies don’t have. That would be an astonishing performance by its lead actor,...

Billy Zane believes actors should be given "emotional stunt pay".The 58-year-old actor put on weight and had to film several abuse scenes for his role as cult leader Larry Ray in 'Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story' - in which he plays a former prisoner who moved into his daughter's dorm at Sarah Lawrence college in 2010 and took control of her roommates' lives for over a decade before he was jailed for 60 years - and he admitted the production sparked "weird trauma" in his body.He told Entertainment Weekly: “Actors should get emotional stunt pay.“The secondary experience encroaches on the primary. It really does. You’re recreating much weird trauma. We’re putting coursing adrenaline through our bodies and depleting serotonin and dopamine and freaking ourselves out and the body registers it.”Despite the emotional toll of the role, the 'Titanic' star mostly "enjoyed" his physical transformation.

The ghost who walks. The man who cannot die. That’s right – it’s Billy Zane! Well, The Phantom, but it sounds much cooler with Billy Zane directly attached. And he might not mind, either, considering it’s one of his favorite endeavors of his career.
Speaking with The A.V. Club, Billy Zane declared that Kit Walker aka The Phantom stands as “one of my favorite characters.” But the movie itself was a flop, with the June 7th, 1996 opening weekend finding it opening at #6, despite only one other title that week being a new release. As Zane remembered, “It got a lot of stick early on because it wasn’t edgy at a time when all those movies were going dark. I’ve always held a torch for what I saw as a dying genre, which was adventure. I was raised on adventure, and I think it’s so easily...

In April 2019, New York magazine published “Larry Ray and the Stolen Kids of Sarah Lawrence,” a shocking account of a group of bright college students who fell under the influence of a classmate’s father and did everything he asked of them, no matter how vile — ultimately resulting in his incarceration for sex trafficking, extortion, and conspiracy. As a Sarah Lawrence graduate, director Elisabeth Rohm read the article with intense interest. “It could have happened to me,” she told IndieWire. “I felt so strongly about that.” Rohm immediately saw the potential for a compelling feature film, but it would take several years of script development and untangling of legal issues for the story to finally make it to the screen.

Billy Zane makes his Lifetime movie debut in the network’s new original film Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story, premiering June 23. The movie is based on the true story of Larry Ray, an ex-con who moved in with his daughter at Sarah Lawrence College and started a cult that included many of his daughter’s friends. Ray’s crimes were exposed in a New York Magazine article, and he’s since been sentenced to 60 years in federal prison. Zane and director/executive producer Elisabeth Rohm spoke with TV Insider about exploring Ray’s twisted crimes and what happened to his victims. “What I really enjoyed and understood up front why this was absolutely the right place to tell this story was the restraint shown by the platform and the network,” Zane said. “Had it been in the hands of any other streamer, I think it would be too salacious,...

Billy Zane knows the body keeps score — and the “Titanic” actor wants his paycheck to reflect that.
In the era of intimacy coordinators and therapists on sets, Zane told Entertainment Weekly that perhaps protocols should be taken one step further.

Billy Zane recently told Entertainment Weekly that “actors should get emotional stunt pay” after he transformed into the Sarah Lawrence cult leader Larry Ray for the upcoming Lifetime movie “Devil on Campus: The Larry Ray Story.” Ray was an ex-con who moved into his daughter’s dorm at Sarah Lawrence college in 2010 and gained manipulative control over her roommates’ lives. His abusive sex cult lasted for a decade before he was convicted and given a 60-year prison sentence. Playing Rey required Zane to gain weight and film several abuse scenes.

George P. Cosmatos' 1993 Western "Tombstone" begins in the year 1879 and ends in 1881 at the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Said gunfight was a notably bloody shootout between the local law enforcers of Tombstone, Arizona and a local gang of criminals nicknamed the Cowboys. The law was represented by the Earp brothers Wyatt, Virgil, and James, and they have gone down as important figures in the history of the American West.
In the movie, Wyatt Earp is played by Kurt Russell, and the old lawman is depicted as a formerly violent man trying to eschew his instincts to shoot others. Wyatt hopes to be peaceful and gentle and live quietly with his common-law wife Sadie (Dana Delaney). Spoiler alert: he's not successful. Indeed, the violence is so brazenly inevitable in Westerns, one wonders why anyone even entertains the thought of giving peace a chance. The potential gunshot victims in...

Exclusive: Another Grammer will appear in the Paramount+ series Frasier next season.
Greer Grammer will guest star on the series as Roz Doyle’s (Peri Gilpin) daughter Alice all grown up. Now in her late twenties, friendly, outgoing Alice has inherited more than some of her mother’s free-spirited ways. Having just moved to Providence to study architecture, Alice is eager to catch up with Frasier’s son Freddy (Jack Cutmore-Scott)—and complicate whatever romantic plans he may have.
Gilpin appeared in one episode of the new Frasier last season and was previously announced to be returning for Season 2 in a recurring capacity. Production is currently underway in Los Angeles at Paramount Studios.
The series follows Frasier Crane (Kelsey Grammer) in the next chapter of his life after he returns to Boston to face new challenges, forge new relationships and – with hope – finally fulfill an old dream or two.

The Krites -- the titular "Critters" from the eponymous film series -- are small, furry, extraterrestrial eating machines that are essentially dry-land piranhas. Krites only have impulses toward consumption and chaos. They have human intelligence, but are far more interested in eating than philosophy. The first "Critters" movie, directed by Stephen Herek (of "Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure" and "Mr. Holland's Opus" fame) is one of the world's only Easter-themed horror movies, centering on a small Iowa town that discovers Krite eggs and paints them for the Sunday festivities. Naturally, the eggs hatch and the hungry Krites begin wreaking mayhem. Only a pair of alien bounty hunters named Ug (Terrence Mann) and Lee can help in stopping the alien threat.
The Krites can roll up into balls like hedgehogs and trundle quickly from place to place. They can also fire poisonous quills from their backs. They're mean little mothers.

Exclusive: Buffalo 8 has acquired streaming and VOD rights to Int. Hallway/Night, an existentialist dark comedy from actor-director Billy Zane (Titanic), out of the Cannes Film Festival. Details as to the release plan haven’t been disclosed.
Co-written by Zane, Andre Alves, Nick Loeb and Hugo Melo, pic follows a film director (Zane) who checks in on his actress wife, who he suspects is having an adulterous affair, while she shoots a horror film in Georgia. He soon finds the murderous plot of the film parallels his darkest fantasies of revenge, and one day during production wakes to find he has entered the film itself as the jealous and murderous husband in a comedic, meta telling of a doomed love triangle set in purgatory.
“Int.Hallway / Night explores the universal themes of infidelity and the variety of ways one processes the seemingly inescapable slide,” said Zane in a statement to Deadline.

Is it fair to say that "Tombstone" is one of the best Westerns ever made? At the very least, it's definitely one of the best modern Westerns. Directed by George P. Cosmatos, the stylish, violent saga tells the story of Wyatt Earp and the infamous Gunfight at the O.K. Corral. Kurt Russell and his glorious mustache stars as Earp, with Val Kilmer stealing the entire movie as Earp's sickly buddy, Doc Holliday. The stacked cast also includes Sam Elliott, Bill Paxton, Powers Boothe, Michael Biehn, Dana Delany, Michael Rooker, Billy Zane, Charlton Heston, and a voice cameo from Robert Mitchum.
When you make a Western, certain accoutrements are baked into the material. We're talking pistols, cowboy boots, big ol' hats, and of course, horses. Kurt Russell sat down with Esquire for a career-spanning interview, and during the course of the conversation, the actor fondly recalled his time working with his horse on "Tombstone.

Tom Rothman, the Sony Motion Pictures Group chairman and CEO, wined and dined a select few at a splendidly swish soirée Friday at Mamo Michelangelo in Antibes, hosted by Charles Finch as part of his annual Filmmakers Dinner honoring 100 years of Columbia Pictures, and there was something he said about why movies matter that has stuck with me.
Hours earlier, Rothman had introduced a gloriously restored print of Charles Vidor’s 1946 movie Gilda, starring Rita Hayworth as the eponymous nightclub temptress and Glenn Ford as the hardboiled gambler from her past.

‘Megalopolis’ Is Talk Of Cannes
A more straightforward affair: After a tense build-up shaped by endless rumors of an imminent #MeToo expose and a potential labor strike, the first week of this year’s Cannes Film Festival has been a more straightforward affair. The most controversial event so far has been Thursday evening’s premiere of Francis Ford Coppola’s highly-anticipated Megalopolis. The critical response has been predominantly positive, with some very high highs and inevitably a few low lows. Deadline’s Damon Wise praised the movie, calling it a “mad modern masterwork that reinvents the possibilities of cinema”. He said the film is “something of a mess; unruly, exaggerated, and drawn to pretension like a moth to a flame. It is also, however, a pretty stunning achievement, the...

Billy Zane was first cast as Marlon Brando all the way back in 2019 – and things have been pretty much silent for the bulk of the five years that followed. But now, with the movie at this year’s Cannes Market, we finally have a look at Zane as Brando…and wow does he nail it!
Billy Zane’s Marlon Brando is from a pivotal era in the legendary actor’s career, with Waltzing with Brando taking place in the late ‘60s into the early ‘70s, when his work shifted dramatically and he reinvented himself. Appropriately, Zane has entirely reinvented his look to portray Brando. Photos made available courtesy of Deadline fresh out of Cannes show Zane on the island of Tetiaroa, which Brando purchased in the 1960s when he had that “private island money.” Brando took to the region while filming 1962’s Mutiny on the Bounty; other key movies that...

Exclusive: Billy Zane portrays Marlon Brando in the upcoming film Waltzing With Brando on set in the late 1960s and early ’70s when Brando purchased the private atoll Tetiaroa in the South Pacific.
It was a time when Brando needed to keep working to fund the environmental projects that he and architect Bernard Judge were undertaking on the island.
“When they called him about the gangster movie, he did it to fund what they were trying to create on Tetiaroa,” said Zane, referring to what would become The Godfather directed by Frances Ford Coppola.
Waltzing With Brando, directed by Bill Fishman, re-creates moments from two of Brando’s landmark pictures: The Godfather and Last Tango In Paris.

Don’t be surprised if you see Demi Moore on the Croisette — like, a lot. The veteran actress is set to make a mark at the Cannes Film Festival this year with a film in competition and a packed schedule to match.
Moore stars in filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance opposite Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid. Little is known about Fargeat’s sophomore feature — she debuted with 2017’s stylish Revenge — other than that it’s being referred to as a feminist take on body horror.
Cannes has given The Substance a late-night slot for its world premiere on Sunday, May 19, confirming a busy weekend for Moore. As previously announced, the actress will also take on the role of godmother for luxury jewelry house Chopard’s Trophée Chopard gala ceremony. The event, at Carlton Beach Club on May 17, will see rising star honors presented to Challengers star Mike Faist and...

Toronto-based Raven Banner has added the Michael Jai White action film Sunset Superman and road rage thriller Cold Road to its Cannes slate.
Jason Krawczyk, who directed 205 SXSW fantasy He Never Died, wrote and directed Sunset Superman starring White as Jt, a gentle giant helping his grandmother fix the leaky sink in her secluded cabin.

When Disney purchased the 20th Century Fox library in 2019, it caused some consternation among cineastes. The Fox catalog was vast and impressive, containing tons of indelible classics and even more titles waiting deep inside the studio's archive. 20th Century Fox was formed in 1935 and quickly became one of the "big five" studios that dominated the film industry for decades. Fox hadn't seen a shake-up this dramatic since 1985 when ultra-conservative media mogul Rubert Murdoch bought a controlling share of the company from Marvin Davis.
When Disney made its purchase, many film fans wondered if Fox's old classics would be made more widely available through the about-to-launch Disney+. When the streaming service debuted with a paltry 500 titles, cineastes were aghast. Why buy all those Fox titles if you're not going to distribute them?
That, however, was merely the end of the road for Fox. For its 83-year life, the studio went through many massive,...

When film fans talk about great on-screen chemistry, one of the first pairings that comes to mind for me is Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey in the now-classic, "Dirty Dancing." As Johnny Castle and Frances "Baby" Houseman, the duo are practically radiating with charisma and it's impossible not to fall in love with them throughout the film. It's also a huge testament to their acting abilities, as the pair famously butted heads throughout the production of "Red Dawn," a film they appeared in together three years prior.
"Patrick was playing pranks on me and everybody," Grey said during an episode of "The View" in 2022. "[He was] late and the boss of everybody and it was just, like, macho and I just couldn't take it. I was just like, 'Please, this guy, that's enough with him.'" Grey was the first of the duo cast, and for a time it looked like Billy Zane,...

How does one repay a team of producers for launching its highest grossing film of all time? Give them the key to the studio — literally.
On Monday, “Barbie” producers, LuckyChap’s Margot Robbie, Tom Ackerley and Josey McNamara inked a first-look deal at Warner Bros., which distributed the $1.4 billion-grossing movie. So, to celebrate, Warner Bros. Pictures Group Co-Chairs and CEO Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca decided to resurrect an old tradition, started by WB co-founder Jack Warner.
“Every once in a while, when a significant piece of talent signed a deal with the studio, he presented that company, that talent, with a key to the studio,” De Luca said as he and Abdy raised a toast to the trio. “We are so delighted to have our first key to our studio be given to LuckyChap.”

Back in 1989 a horror anthology series hit HBO network and took the horror world by storm. Maybe you heard of it? Doesn’t ring a bell? Its intro is made of nightmare fuel as the camera treks through its main gate, which ascends to a broken-down, deteriorated mansion as lightning cackles through the night sky. We enter this amusement park of horrors, cobwebs draped alongside the walls, creeks and strange noises echoing about, eerie atmosphere soaking up the screen, and we enter a false trap door. Now when I was younger, I think I was close to shitting my pants because here or there as we descend down these stairs into this abyss, and we go through a room here and there. And then right then and there,...

Only '90s kids raised in video stores — or, more likely, their dads — will recall Luis Llosa's 1993 military thriller "Sniper" with any clarity. "Sniper" stars Tom Berenger as Master Gunnery Sergeant Thomas Beckett as he becomes lost in the jungle while trying to complete an assassination mission with a militarily inexperienced sharpshooter played by Billy Zane. The bulk of the film takes place in the woods of Colombia, although it was shot in Australia. The film was well-liked but critics noted that it was pretty generic; Roger Ebert gave "Sniper" three stars, noting that it was competent but lacked originality. The film boasts a 38 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but that comes from a mere 13 reviews.
What only fans of "Sniper" might know is that Tom Berenger returned to play Thomas Beckett in Craig R. Baxley's "Sniper 2" in 2002 and P.J. Pesce's "Sniper 3" in 2004. These two sequels...

During the final “Last Week Tonight” episode of the year, John Oliver devoted an entire 30-minute segment to rehashing the past 12 months in the life of Elon Musk, billionaire and CEO of X (formerly known as Twitter).
Musk has had a particularly fraught 2023, which started with the removal of verified status from legacy blue-check holders and ended with him telling advertisers, who began to pull their spending from X when Musk endorsed an antisemitic conspiracy theory, to “go fuck yourself.”
Oliver began his roast by calling Musk “a man who can pull off pretty much any bad-guy-in-a-movie look.” As different images of Musk flashed by on the screen, Oliver threw out some comparisons.
“There’s Lex Luthor, posing for the cover of Metropolis Maniacs Monthly. There’s ‘Why no Mr. Bond, I and my child bride expect you to die,'” Oliver said in reference to a photo of Musk and his former partner,...

John Oliver took aim at Elon Musk on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, lobbing insults at the billionaire tech mogul on his final show of the year. “We thought we’d focus on someone who’s had a pretty big 12 months,” the late-night host said of the owner of six companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), and xAI.
Oliver went on to introduce Musk as “a man who can pull off pretty much any bad guy in a movie,” showing him in various outfits and poses.

John Oliver did a deep dive into Elon Musk on Sunday’s Last Week Tonight, and came up with a slew of insults to lob at the billionaire tech mogul.
“This is our final show of the year, so we thought we’d focus on someone who’s had a pretty big 12 months,” the HBO late night show host said.
He called Musk — owner of six companies, including SpaceX, Tesla, X (formerly Twitter), The Boring Company, Neuralink and xAI — “a man who can pull off pretty much any bad guy in a movie.”
Showing various photos of Musk giving different looks and wearing various outfits, Oliver went down his list of “bad guys” that he says Musk resembles: “There’s Lex Luthor posing for the cover of Metropolis Maniacs Monthly. There’s, ‘Why no, Mr. Bond, I and my child’s bride expect you to die.’ There’s, ‘I just...

John Oliver decided to focus on Elon Musk on Last Week Tonight‘s last new episode of 2023. The comedian roasted the billionaire by recounting all the controversies he’s been involved in this past year and said he “could pull off any bad guy in a movie.”
“There’s Lex Luthor posing for the cover of Metropolis Maniacs monthly. There’s ‘Why No Mr. Bond. I and my child bride expect you to die,'” Oliver joked. There’s, ‘I just bought your media company, I’m about to strip you for parts.’ There’s, ‘First racist sheriff.'”
He continued, “And finally, the less fuckable reimagining of Billy Zane’s character in Titanic. Truly, the man has range.”
Oliver recalled Musk’s headlines from testing “the most powerful rocket ever built” to the Tesla recall that involved two million vehicles over the autopilot software. The HBO host also played...

“World’s Largest Metaphor Hits Ice-Berg,” read the The Onion headline. Agreed. As Kate Winslet’s own Freud-referencing Rose Dewitt Bukater snips, James Cameron’s Titanic is epic cinema’s grandest erection, and when the near-scale model set of the towering hulk of steel that was, at the time, the largest ship in the world severs down the middle, it then becomes the most vulgar representation of castration to ever cause millions of heartwarmed teenage girls to choke sobs into their fists. It’s a ready-made sarcophagus for everything that’s vulgar in mainstream cinema. Titanic both embodies and validates the excess that is its own subject.
And Titanic is arguably the most artlessly touching disaster movie of all. No, really. Time and a number of equally irony-free blockbusters in the interim (including Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds and Peter Jackson’s original Lord of the Rings...

After taking a look back at House II: The Second Story (a favorite of mine since childhood) and House of 1000 Corpses (which celebrates its 20th anniversary this year), JoBlo’s own Lance Vlcek continues his The Best Scene video series by digging into what he feels is the best scene from the 1995 classic Tales from the Crypt Presents: Demon Knight (watch it Here). Lance’s choice for the best scene in this one is the scene where Billy Zane’s character The Collector gives up his cowboy disguise and reveals his true nature. You can hear all about it in the video embedded above!

Chace Crawford's The Deep has quietly turned into the Mvp of "The Boys": a character who you love to hate, who is just the right amount of pitiful that makes you want to watch more of him, but not pitiful enough that you feel bad when things don't go his way. This is mostly due to Crawford's portrayal of the character, who -- unlike Homelander or the other villains of the show -- is terrifying because of how ordinary he is. The Deep is just some loser with a position of power, and that makes him scary, especially when involved in less fantastical, more relatable storylines.
Still, The Deep has also been involved in some of the funniest storylines in the show, like his accidental killing of every single sea creature he comes across, even ones he is weirdly sexually involved with, and also that time he got involved with a cult.

For thousands of years, the Waorani women of the Ecuadorian Amazon have lived in the biodiverse Yasuni area and coexisted within a delicate ecosystem, which has allowed them to flourish while preserving their unique customs and traditions. A decision to drill for oil in a protected area of the Yasuni National Park was rejected by 60% of Ecuadorians in August.
