You know, in some film circles, Ron Howard gets a lot of guff for being a "boring" director. But I think that's unfair. Sure, Howard has some duds in his directorial career, but he also has some home runs. "Apollo 13" is an exciting "based on a true story" flick, "The Paper" is a nifty look at the world of newspaper journalism, the underrated "Cinderella Man" is a stellar boxing drama. And then there's "Backdraft," Howard's 1991 thriller about firefighters. To be fair, the "Backdraft" script is a bit weak, but the film itself is action-packed and boasts some incredible visual effects that use real fire. The film also has a killer cast, including Robert De Niro, the late, great Donald Sutherland, Jennifer Jason Leigh, J.T. Walsh, Scott Glenn, and, of course, Kurt Russell.
Russell plays Lieutenant Stephen "Bull" McCaffrey, a really cool guy who is also a damn good firefighter.

The cast of The Hunger Games franchise could’ve looked slightly different.
Austin Butler revealed in a Buzzfeed interview with his Bikeriders co-star Jodie Comer, he revealed that he auditioned for but didn’t get a part in the hit movie series.

He then revealed that he auditioned for the role of Peeta Mellark, the male tribute representing District 12 in the 74th annual Hunger Games, alongside female tribute Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence).
He added, “I don’t even think I got a call back; what’s the character, Peeta? Josh Hutcherson got that; he’s great.”
Hutcherson starred alongside Lawrence and Liam Hemsworth throughout the four Hunger Games films, with the films helping the trio become worldwide stars.

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. In our Season 3 premiere, we cover the 53rd Academy Awards in 1981, honoring the films of 1980.
If you were waiting on pins and needles back then to see who would win, you had to wait an extra day. For the first time since 1968, the Oscars were postponed following the attempted assassination of President Ronald Reagan. Once the ceremony was underway, which included a video message from the actor-turned-potus taped weeks earlier, it was an extraordinary night for “Ordinary People.” The Robert Redford-helmed drama collected four awards, including Best Picture, but now receives undue hate as the film that beat Martin Scorsese‘s “Raging Bull.”

After giving his time and energy to Paramount and Yellowstone for five seasons, he left the show before its last few episodes, citing a conflict in schedule.

Earlier this week, we had the sad duty to report that the great Donald Sutherland passed away at 88 years old. One of the finest actors of his generation (and the most acclaimed actor to never even be nominated for an Oscar), Sutherland leaves behind a rich legacy of films, both as a lead and as a character actor. With over 200 roles to his credit, there were too many movies to list in my poll of his best work below, but I tried to cover all the classics. That said, if I missed something, you can write it in the comments below, and I’ll add it as a write-in entry. I’m curious to see what you all think is the best!

Donald Sutherland’s film career is filled with some of the most incredible works of our time, spanning from dramas to conspiracy thrillers to even dystopian YA fiction like The Hunger Games. Sutherland landed the role of President Snow in quite a peculiar manner, which he detailed in an interview with GQ.

The late Donald Sutherland was one of the legendary actors in the industry, who saw a resurgence in his career in the 2010s with his role in The Hunger Games. Sutherland rose to prominence with his role as Hawkeye Pierce in M*A*S*H and went on to become a major presence in several classics and box office hits. Interestingly, he made a financial mistake in the negotiation of a movie role that cost his $20 million.

If being a Hollywood star consists of having either major box office clout or a few Oscar nominations (and, preferably, at least one win), the great Donald Sutherland never had any of those. Then why, since his death last Thursday at age 88, has he been celebrated the world over as one of the true legends to grace the modern screen?
The reason is simple: the Canadian-born Sutherland, whose incredibly prolific and versatile career kicked off in 1964 with the Italian horror flick, The Castle of the Living Dead, possessed the extremely rare quality — call it a kind of alchemy — where he could disappear into a role and yet somehow remain Donald Sutherland at the same time.
Whether he was playing a sinister Nazi spy (The Eye of a Needle), a boozy G.I. medic (M*A*S*H), an existentially lovesick detective (Klute), the benevolent English patriarch of a classic 19th...

I was a new set decorator so excited to be working on “My Life as an Experiment,” a pilot that was produced by Jack Black. I was even more excited to learn that Donald Sutherland was one of the actors. One day, an A.D approached me, telling me that The Donald Sutherland wanted a meeting…with me. The set decorator.
I knocked on the door, and there he was. He was tall and a very large person, not like many actors and not at all what I expected. He had a huge presence and his voice moved through you, not in a threatening way, but in a way that almost reverberated your energy. He wanted to talk about his character and what the set could do to help bring him to life.

Tales of Hollywood actors turning down profit participation in huge hits are rampant, as when Orson Welles rejected the initial $75,000 plus 10 percent of the gross offer on 1949’s The Third Man for a quick $100,000 dollars up front. Not bad for only ten days’ work. Plus, he needed cash to finance Othello right away so it all worked out… except The Third Man would ultimately become one of the most financially successful movies of Welles’ career. He later regretted this, of course, and if the director of Citizen Kane wasn’t enough of a genius to go for points, then certainly the iconic, and yet strangely underappreciated, actor Donald Sutherland wasn’t immune to bad monetary decisions either.
Sutherland, who passed away yesterday at age 88 after a long illness, had an incredible career littered with enduring classics like M*A*S*H, Klute, and Best Picture winner Ordinary People to his resume.

About three-quarters of the way through every performance of David Adjmi’s Tony-winning play Stereophonic, two characters – Holly, the British keyboardist/vocalist (played by Juliana Canfield) and Grover, the American recording engineer (Eli Gelb) get into a debate over their favorite movies. Their favorite erotic movies, to be exact.
The setting being, as it were, a cantankerous rock & roll recording studio session circa 1976, there’s no surprise that Holly and Grover likely won’t agree, and indeed, Grover chooses Last Tango in Paris, making sure to point out that every woman he’s ever dated has had a crush on Marlon Brando.
Not so Holly. She finds Brando mean and misogynist, and much prefers the sensitive poignance of Donald Sutherland in the grief-stricken romantic thriller Don’t Look Now.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire (2013) Francis Lawrence
Yesterday, Kiefer Sutherland came to social media with a devastating announcement. His father, who he rightfully described as "one of the most important actors in the history of film," had passed away. Donald Sutherland was 88, and he leaves behind an enviable legacy. His career is the stuff of legend, spanning nearly two hundred screen credits over six decades and many a landmark in American cinema. Moreover, his kindness and political activism earned him admiration as a human being, not just an artist.
Speaking only for myself, Donald Sutherland was one of my favorite thespians of the silver screen, a man of varied talents who could as effortlessly embody fatherly warmth as the darkest impulses within us all. His absence is inconceivable, yet one must contend with it. And what better way to do it than to celebrate his well-lived life?...

When the films were released, Sutherland excitedly promoted the films, speaking highly of them. Legendary actor Donald Sutherland just passed away at the age of 88. Younger fans probably know him best for playing the villainous President Snow in the Hunger Games movies, or perhaps for voicing Hollis Hurlbut in that one episode of The Simpsons.
Older audiences, on the other hand, grew up watching Sutherland in classic movies like M*A*S*H, Don’t Look Now and The Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Although his greatest work, hands down, was this vintage Canadian tourism commercial in which he tells a joke about a salmon fisherman on his wedding day.
Sutherland also starred in one of the most profitable movie comedies of all-time: National Lampoon’s Animal House.
Sutherland played the highly-inappropriate Professor Jennings (who somehow still isn’t the most questionable element of the movie). This may have seemed like an odd role for the actor at the time, but Sutherland only took the gig...

He was initially an ambassador from the Hippie Nation, a force of irreverence armed with a sharp wit and a what-me-worry smile. Which is why, in the late 1960s, right when Flower Power was beginning to bloom in full and the escalating situation in Vietnam galvanized the youth generation, Donald Sutherland started to make a name for himself in… war movies. It’s funny to think of that factoid now, given the six decades of incredibly versatile work the late, great actor left behind when he died Thursday at the...

To say that JFK is a controversial movie, with its depiction of JFK’s assassination being subject to internal conspiracy in the United States, is not an understatement. Oliver Stone, writer, and director of the film, almost added to its problem by prolonging the film’s runtime, as he revealed another actor that he pitched the role to would have put him in a lot of trouble had he said yes.
A still from Oliver Stone’s JFK || Warner Bros.
Donald Sutherland plays the character of Mr. X, a character who has but one scene in the three-hour-long film. However, in one scene, the character embarks on a monologue that talks about how the Secret Service, the CIA, the FBI, the American Mafia, and Lyndon Johnson were all in on the assassination of John F. Kennedy, and bid to install Johnson as president, so that the US does not pull out of the war.

Donald Sutherland passed away Thursday at the age of 88, an actor so respected for his dramatic acting that he won an honorary Oscar in 2017. He’ll be remembered for Klute, Ordinary People, Don’t Look Now and even The Hunger Games, but don’t forget that Sutherland played key roles in three of the most influential comedies ever.
1 M*A*S*H
Take a seat, Alan Alda — Sutherland was the original Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s epic satire. Sutherland didn’t get along with the director, but who cares? It was Altman’s first hit-it-out-the-park classic, a movie that thumbed its nose at the Vietnam War by pretending to be about the Korean War. “Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland are two genuinely funny actors,” wrote Roger Ebert in his four-star review. “They don’t have to make themselves ridiculous to get a laugh. They’re funny because their humor comes so directly from their personalities.

Commanding and versatile actor known for his roles in M*A*S*H, Don’t Look Now and The Hunger Games
Donald Sutherland, who has died aged 88, brought his disturbing and unconventional presence to bear in scores of films after his breakthrough role of Hawkeye Pierce, the army surgeon in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H (1970), one of the key American films of its period. It marked Sutherland out as an iconoclastic figure of the 60s generation, but he matured into an actor who made a speciality of portraying taciturn, self-doubting characters. This was best illustrated in his portrayal of the tormented parent of a drowned girl, seeking solace in a wintry Venice, in Nicolas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now (1973), and of the weak, nervous, concerned father of a guilt-ridden teenage boy (Timothy Hutton) in Robert Redford’s Ordinary People (1980).

The film industry lost another legendary actor as Hunger Games actor Donald Sutherland passed away on Thursday. Sutherland rose to prominence in the ’70s with the roles in The Dirty Dozen and M*A*S*H. However, he had a less prominent role in the former until one actor’s refusal to do a scene landed him a bigger part and the main role in the latter.

Sutherland had nearly 200 films to his name in his career and the role of Hawkeye Pierce in Robert Altman’s M*A*S*H always had a special place in the audience’s hearts. Unfortunately, the actor never received an Academy Award in his lifetime, but received an Academy Honorary Award in 2017.

Donald Sutherland has left us at the age of 88. A few words on the passing of a giant of cinema.
It’s always a bit of a conundrum on a site like this over how to mark the passing of someone. I’m not entirely comfortable getting clicks from the loss of someone, but also, I want to pay respects as well. And on balance, I think the latter wins out here.
As you more than likely already know, the world lost Donald Sutherland. The announcement came from his son, Kiefer Sutherland, who posted the following on his social media account,
With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film. Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and...

Elliott Gould has said Donald Sutherland was “like my brother” as he paid tribute to his Mash co-star, who died Thursday at 88.
In an Instagram message posted hours ago, Gould wrote an emotional note wishing the actor goodbye. The pair co-starred in Robert Altman’s 1970 dark war comedy Mash, alongside the likes of Tom Skerritt and Sally Kellerman. They reteamed four years later for Irvin Kershner’s comedy S*P*Y*S.
“Donald was a giant, not only physically but as a talent,” wrote Gould. “He was also enormously kind and generous.”

It may now be hard to imagine, but in 1970, Donald Sutherland, who died Thursday at 88, was the coolest movie star on the planet. The moment I saw him in “Mash,” I knew he was the person I wanted to be, the same way that I wanted to be Mick Jagger or Steve McQueen. In 1970, Pacino and De Niro hadn’t happened yet. You could say that Robert Redford and Paul Newman, in “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid” (1969), had achieved the quintessence of a kind of studio-system cool, inventing the buddy movie.
But in “Mash,” Donald Sutherland and Elliott Gould, as “Hawkeye” Pierce and “Trapper John” McIntyre, were buddies of a headier, more intoxicating kind. They were so cool that they seemed to stand outside the system, studio or otherwise. They devised their own rules, which came down to this: If you could make fun of the world and everything in it,...
