Space Cadet, which stars Emma Roberts as Florida party girl Rex, who finds herself unexpectedly becoming an astronaut candidate, comes from director by Liz W. Garcia, who brings a refreshing spin to the beloved “fish out of water” trope,
infused with a female-centric narrative that reminded me very much of classics such as the 80s Goldie Hawn-led duo of Protocol and Private Benjamin – which itself inspired a similar “fish out of water” military comedy in 2002s Cadet Kelly; along with the likes of Miss Congeniality (2000) and Legally Blonde, released a year later in 2001.
Garcia’s film very much echoes Legally Blonde and Miss Congeniality thematically, both of which featured strong, independent women – played by Reese Witherspoon and Sandra Bullock respectively – who...

Garry Marshall's 1987 film "Overboard" is brisk and light, although the premise is a little dark. Kurt Russell plays Dean, a blue-collar widower who is hired by a spoiled heiress named Joanna Stayton (Goldie Hawn) to build a custom closet. Dean does quality work, but Joanna refuses to pay him because of a few small, insignificant details. Joanna is an entitled, spoiled brat who treats everyone poorly.
When Joanna later falls off of a yacht and begins suffering from amnesia, Dean picks her up from the hospital, telling her that she's actually his wife Annie.
Joanna is taken to Dean's home, and he gets a form of karmic revenge on her. Dean instructs her to do extensive difficult chores around the house, and to take care of his four sons. For a short while, he takes delight in watching her suffer with the hard work, understanding that she was too...

Bette Midler is sharing the feedback she got to her request to join the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills cast.
While talking with E! News, when Midler was asked about whether she had plans to make a cameo on her The Fabulous Four co-star Sheryl Lee Ralph’s hit sitcom, Abbott Elementary, she noted that she “always hints” on Twitter whether she wants a role — including her prior call out to the Bravo network.
“[I tweeted], ‘Is it too late for me to be on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills?’ I did tweet that and I did get some really strange feedback,” she said, referring to her March post. (The official Bravo account responded at the time: “Talk about a glorious crossover.”)
When asked if she would actually be on Rhobh, Midler admitted that it’d be “a little bit more than a problem” than making the Abbott Elementary cameo possible. “I...

There are shades of Legally Blonde and Private Benjamin in Amazon’s lesser, low-rent comedy about a Florida bartender with dreams of being an astronaut
There’s a well-tested, and mostly well-liked, formula being recycled in Amazon’s lightweight Fourth of July comedy Space Cadet. It’s the mildly rousing story of an underestimated blonde excelling in a more serious field, something Goldie Hawn aced in Private Benjamin and Protocol before Melanie Griffith took over with Working Girl and Born Yesterday, followed by Reese Witherspoon in Legally Blonde. It’s an easy, against-all-odds rise for us to get behind and a career-defining every-scene showcase for an actor who may have also found herself unfairly undervalued by the industry.
There’s something for both actor and character to prove, and when it’s done right, we should be able to taste the same hunger, cheering for an inevitable victory. But in...

Clay Kaytis' 2018 family film "The Christmas Chronicles" has a pretty typical plot for a Christmas movie. A pair of mischievous kids (Judah Lewis and Darby Camp) catch Santa Claus (Kurt Russell) delivering gifts on Christmas Eve, and stow away on his sleigh. Their subterfuge, however, causes the sleigh to crash, scattering Santa's ephemera across Chicago. Santa and the two kids will have to work overtime to retrieve Santa's magical belongings -- his reindeer, his hat, and his gift bag -- so that he may deliver all his gifts by Christmas morning. Like in many kids' movies, the kids are mourning the loss of a parent, so "Chronicles" is also about regaining hope and realizing that childhood magic still exists in a world of grief.
The film was such a hit, a sequel, "The Christmas Chronicles 2" was released in 2020. Kurt Russell's real-life long-term sweetheart Goldie Hawn played Mrs. Claus in both films,...

You know you love her, and why wouldn't you?
Eva Longoria is not only a talented actress who chooses projects that speak not just to her amazing acting talent but resonate with her heart in a way that shows in her performances.
She may have gotten recognition from her role on a drama-dripping soap opera with a cast of actors who have no right to be as attractive as they are talented, but Longoria has proven she is so much more than a pretty face and a smile that could melt steel.
With wins from the Screen Actors Guild and the People's Choice, the actress is a familiar face who has been entertaining folks since the start of the millennium.
If this fantastic woman hasn't won you over yet, do a quick search of her to see how she brings thousands of dollars to charities and foundations that help impoverished communities and immigrants worldwide.

It's no secret that TikTok is a social media giant, and there's at least one entire generation that has opted to watch short clips of video on their phone rather than spend time watching streaming shows or feature-length films, whether they're in theaters or even at home. Hell, some of the youths are probably watching TikTok videos while a forgettable streaming movie is playing in the background. Others are just watching them in small chunks, because they're being pirated on TikTok too.
Unfortunately, TikTok has become so pervasive in our entertainment culture that studios have been using popular influencers with millions of followers on the social media behemoth to help build publicity for upcoming movies and TV shows that TikTok users might not see in the trailers, commercials, and billboards that their screen-hungry eyes would otherwise never gaze upon. When it comes to diversity in filmmaking, Steven Spielberg tops the list. Over many decades of being one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, Spielberg has shown that he can never be boxed into one specific genre by becoming the master in everything. In 1982, he directed E.T. The Extra Terrestrial which went on to become one of Hollywood’s cult classics.

The film about the relationship between an alien and a young boy, hit front and center for viewers worldwide for the way in which the Oscar winner expertly wove beautiful emotions into a sci-fi film. But Spielberg admitted that he lost a lot of sleep on how to pitch this multi-layered narrative to audiences, which made him seriously doubt his capability as a filmmaker.

In Jonathan Mostow's 1997 thriller "Breakdown," Kurt Russell and Kathleen Quinlan play a happily married couple driving their high-tech SUV from Boston to San Diego. By accident, they almost run into a pickup truck on the remote highways of Arizona. When Russell later meets the driver of the pickup (M.C. Gainey) at a gas station, tensions are high. Later still, when Russell and Quinlan are back on the road, their car suddenly stops. Quinlan offers to hitchhike into town to get help, while Russell stays with the SUV. It will be quite a while before they see each other again. It seems that Quinlan has been kidnapped! Russell has to drive around Arizona's remote backroads looking for clues, and eventually, he faces off against the kidnappers. "Breakdown" also stars the immortal J.T. Walsh, and a punky Jack Noseworthy.

During a recent appearance on SiriusXM’s Let’s Talk Off Camera with Kelly Ripa, the Oscar-winning actress said she would love to make a movie with her family after host Kelly Ripa pitched her on a Thanksgiving dinner-themed reality show with her children. Hawn has been in a relationship with actor Kurt Russell since 1983, and they share four children, three of whom are working actors.
“What I would love, actually, before we all get, you know, too old, [it] would be so great to do a movie together,” she said. “Wouldn’t it? It would be so fun and so crazy and oh my God.”
On why they haven’t made one yet, Hawn added, “It’s all about a writer. … I have to get permission first from my family.”

If “Barbie” tells us anything, it’s that a movie doesn’t have to be gay to be, well, gay. So what makes a movie gay if it isn’t explicitly? Cast a few top-shelf gay icons in there — your Bette Middlers, your Joan Crawfords, your Faye Dunaways playing Joan Crawford — and especially have them reparteeing bitchy lines tearing each other to pieces, and have an aesthetic that’s outre and unironically camp, and you’ve got the winning-formula starter-pack for something deliciously fabulous and queer, even if not by intentional design.
Some films have gotten swept up into the queer canon by virtue of their unintentional awfulness or arguable quality while others actually push forward the cinematic medium to create something that stands the tests of time and the weathers of queer folks and their mercurial tastes. Rules are made to be broken. Probably this belief is the main reason why so many creative things happen in the world. Especially we love how the movie industry changes thanks to it: the genres get mixed, the stories get more and more complicated, and the outcome is often very unpredictable.

While Jaws was the film that put Steven Spielberg on the Hollywood map, the filmmaker began his theatrical directing debut a year before in 1974 with The Sugarland Express. This crime drama starring Goldie Hawn in the lead role, was screened in the presence of Spielberg at this year’s Tribeca Festival as a celebration of the 50th anniversary of its release.

Apple, or at least its technology, was worried about the health and well-being of Hollywood’s greatest director.
In the middle of Steven Spielberg’s Tribeca Festival talk on Saturday, where the filmmaker was celebrating the 50th anniversary of his debut feature, “The Sugarland Express,” he was interrupted by his Apple watch with a message that read “It looks like you’ve taken a hard fall.” Spielberg jokingly said “I’m not going to press the Sos [button]” before throwing it on the ground. “I’ll pick it up later,” he said, only to retrieve it a few minutes later when it started issuing some sort of distress signal.
Before the Q&a began, a taped message from “The Sugarland Express” star Goldie Hawn appeared on the screen, thanking Spielberg and reminiscing about the pivotal moment in her career—and his. The film was released in 1974, just one year before “Jaws,...

Most of the action in Steven Spielberg’s 1974 directorial debut, Sugarland Express, unfolds over the course of an extended car chase as Goldie Hawn and William Atherton’s characters try to evade a long convoy of police vehicles in an effort to regain custody of their young son from foster care.
While the film predated high-speed freeway car chases, modern audiences might be reminded of such events, including O.J. Simpson’s infamous white Bronco chase, which unfolded roughly 30 years ago, on June 17, 1994.
And sure enough, Spielberg himself admitted he thought of his own film when he saw the Bronco chase, which riveted audiences as it took over TV.

Speaking after a 50th-anniversary screening of Sugarland at the 2024 Tribeca Festival, Spielberg jokingly said he thought, “Shit, they’re stealing my thunder,” when he saw the Simpson chase.
Elsewhere during the post-screening Q&a, Spielberg reflected on making the film, including casting lead...

In one of this year’s climaxes at the Tribeca Festival, Steven Spielberg showed off his first major studio theatrical release, Sugarland Express, which celebrates 50 years.
“You’re the first audience to ever see Sugarland Express in 50 years,” joked the 3x Oscar-winning filmmaker at the packed Bmcc screening in the lower west side of Manhattan.
How’s that? Spielberg said Universal pulled the movie out of theaters after two weeks as no one went to see it despite good reviews. The movie repped his first big screen release after cutting his teeth as a TV director, and it preceded his work on 1975’s Jaws, the blockbuster that would give definition to the word tentpole.
Sugarland Express failed at the box office per Spielberg, as audiences wanted to see a lighthearted Goldie Hawn in the movie, not to mention, it had a tragic ending.

A column chronicling conversations and events on the awards circuit.
Ballots were delivered to eligible Television Academy members as of yesterday (due back June 24th by 10 pm pt), and that means all the months of campaigning for nominations is now in the hands of Emmy voters.
Actually, this season has been a litte weird due to the strike-related delay of last year’s 75th Emmys to January 15, as FYCs and other related events to the 76th Emmy awards season were just beginning. On top of that, the 96th Oscar season was still going full-force until mid-March. It could all get very confusing, given that a number of people up for Oscars are also in the thick of the Emmys this year, meaning they have been in essentially non-stop campaign mode — for some even as far back as Cannes 2023, and for others since the Fall festivals officially kicked off Oscar season.

Goldie Hawn revealed in a new interview that the L.A. home she shares with longtime partner Kurt Russell was robbed several years back while the couple was out to dinner. Despite assuming “the odds are that’s not gonna happen again,” Hawn experienced an attempted home invasion four months later.
Regarding the first incident, Hawn said the couple returned from a night out in 2020 to find their home ransacked. “I went up to the stairs and I walked into my closet and I just lost it,” Hawn told Kelly Ripa during a conversation on the TV personality’s SiriusXM podcast, Let’s Talk Off Camera. “They had broken in from the balcony to our bedroom, our closets, and they completely knocked down my door, which is a safe door, so they’re very, very sophisticated and they got a lot of my goodies.”

And that’s why I became a filmmaker.”

Having Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as your parents might sound like a dream to some, and Wyatt Russell certainly loves his folks, but acting with them has always been something he’s been hesitant to do — especially once his dad’s return to the screen coincided with his own rise. Sure, he played a younger version of his Kurt’s character in the 1998 sci-fi thriller “Soldier,” but doing the same for the Apple TV+ television adventure series “Monarch: Legacy of Monsters” involved an entirely different level of commitment. In the show, they play a rough, but reliable U.S. Army Colonel at two contrasting points in his life, yet in both time periods, he’s similarly tasked with facing down the Titans who threaten to destroy the world. In creating this dichotomy, Kurt and Wyatt didn’t really feel the need to prepare together, but in a recent interview with Variety,...

The 80s and 90s were a great time for character actors. Guys like Gene Hackman, Brian Dennehy, Christopher Walken, John Lithgow, Morgan Freeman and many others occupied this really interesting place where they could lead their own movies and be just as comfortable playing supporting roles – whether large or small – in bigger films without worrying about things legit movie stars have to, such as bankability. Of that era, one of the biggest character actors was no doubt the fast-talking James Woods. In the eighties, his star rose thanks to movies like Videodrome, Salvador, True Believer and many others. While he never became a legit box office superstar, he was in that niche place where he could lead his own movies, such as the underrated Best Seller, while also playing plum supporting roles in movies like Chaplin, The Specialist and Casino. He was noted as one of the town’s biggest scene-stealers,...

After a stellar 1989, the Hollywood box office of 1990 was expected to be even better – but the film industry got taught some tough lessons.
Browsing the worldwide box office charts for 1989, and many a major studio executive would have been stroking their chin with some degree of comfort. The same old was working. The new things were working. Everything was getting better. The Christmas party was clearly going to be on the impressive side.
What 1989 had proven, after all, was the growing feeling that big stuff worked too. Tim Burton’s Batman had firmly introduced the idea of the huge opening weekend at the box office, and that a movie could become a cultural phenomenon. That patrons would leave the cinema and promptly seek out the soundtrack, the computer game, the book, the T-shirt, the novelty undercrackers.
But it wasn’t just Batman. 1989 proved to Hollywood that, for the most part,...

When a movie is as big as Crocodile Dundee, you better believe there will be a sequel. Audiences renting a VHS tape of the movie back in 1987 had a little introduction before the film, teasing the fact that a sequel was in the works, something all of us kids who grew up on this movie were psyched by.
So when the first one came out, Paul Hogan became a massive international star. He was already big in Australia, but before Crocodile Dundee, Hogan was mostly known for his ‘Shrimp on the Barbie’ Australian Tourism adverts. By 1987, he was so popular that he was one of the three hosts of the 1987 Academy Awards, opposite Goldie Hawn and Chevy Chase. Crocodile Dundee II would be a much bigger film than its predecessor. After all, this wasn’t a tiny Australian indie anymore. It was a big studio film, with Paramount Pictures, who distributed the first film,...

Los Angeles’ iconic seaside diner Patrick’s Roadhouse at the edge of Pacific Palisades may have slung its last hash brown.
Amid a long-term lease negotiation, and after the financial battering of the pandemic, the half-century-old restaurant just off Pacific Coast Highway, known for its bright green exterior and kitsch décor, is attempting to raise $250,000 for back rent and building improvements as it holds discussions with potential new business partners about the possibility of a return.
While off the radar of industry cognoscenti in recent years, it had long been an unpretentious lure for A-listers like Johnny Carson, Sean Penn and Lucille Ball as well as execs including Jeffrey Katzenberg and onetime Paramount Pictures president Ned Tanen. Its most important Hollywood connection, though, may be its namesake: the seasoned character actor Patrick Fischler, son of the original owner Bill Fischler, who has since died.

Oscar and Golden Globe-winning actress Goldie Hawn recently celebrated her daughter Kate Hudson’s 45th birthday and shared some sweet memories. The ‘Private Benjamin’ actress took to Instagram to share a sweet throwback image alongside Hudson, reports ‘People’ magazine.
In the photo, the mother and daughter are seen embracing, clad in matching white tank tops and blue jeans.
“Happy birthday, my darling daughter @katehudson,” Hawn, 78, wrote in the caption.
“Among all the things you have already accomplished in your life — amazing mother, great dancer, Academy Award-nominated actress, and now a fantastic singer — let us not forget you were the fastest runner in high school and all of Los Angeles.”
“So keep on running sweetheart. You’re a racehorse. I love you,” Hawn concluded.
Hudson expressed her gratitude to her mom in the comment section, saying, “Haha! Mama you’re the best! Being fast is still my favourite accomplishment. Catch me if you can!

“This is life’s ultimate cruelty. It offers us a taste of youth and vitality, and then it makes us witness our own decay.”
Is there anything more terrifying than the relentless passage of time? It’s a bitter truth that just when we’ve become accustomed to our bodies, the sands of time turn and we’re forced to watch them slowly break down in a cruel march towards inevitable death. But what if there were a way to stop the aging process – a potion that would return us to our peak physical condition and hold us there until the end of time? Would we take it? And would we eventually find that the blessing of perpetual life is actually a curse? No film explores this dilemma quite like Death Becomes Her. Robert Zemeckis’ 1992 horror comedy pits two showstopping divas against each other for a single spotlight while asking...

In Luca Guadagnino’s latest cinematic endeavor, “Challengers,” Zendaya, Josh O’Connor, and Mike Faist form a dynamic, throuple-esque trio, each delivering performances that scream Oscar-worthy. The real question is, will Academy voters look beyond the palpable sexual chemistry to acknowledge the film’s artistic merit? That’s a challenge for the marketing maestros.
Penned by newcomer Justin Kuritzkes, the spouse of “Past Lives” writer-director Celine Song, “Challengers” weaves through a 13-year narrative, chronicling the life of Tashi Duncan (Zendaya), a tennis wunderkind-turned-coach, who hatches a plan for her husband Art’s (Faist) comeback. The plan pits him against his ex-buddy and Tashi’s former flame, Patrick (O’Connor), setting the stage for a dramatic unraveling.

Initially set for a grand reveal at the 80th Venice International Film Festival, its premiere was thwarted by the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. The delay prompts the question: could Zendaya have joined the best actress fray,...
