This is a straightforward game. Play a bit of exhibition to get used to the controls. Make sure your difficulty is on at least Medium though I have it on Hard.

Start up Story Mode. The opening cutscene and creation of your guy. Blah blah blah another cutscene introducing you to some main guys like Blaze and Sticky Fingaz.

Eventually you'll have to do a small tutorial fight against jobber man House. But first you have to choose your first style:
Kickboxing- Good combos, ability to clinch and perform moves out of that. Requires good lower strength

Streetfighting- Good punch combos, all-aroundedness, HAYMAKER. Requires good upper strength

Marital Arts- Great combos, speed, all-aroundedness, BUT NO GOOD KO MOVE. Requires good health and upper/lower strength

Wrestling- Great grapple moves, but crap combos, but CAN KO WITH STRONG GRAPPLE. Requires good upper strength

Submissions- Ability to submit, but terrible combos and crappy grapples. Requires good health and toughness (to last long enough to submit people)

I prefer Kickboxing and never choose Martial Arts. But if you just wanna beat the game, go with Streetfighting. It's the easiest style to start with since you can HAYMAKER (strong punch) people to win.

Do the small tutorial with House. You should already know how to play. Easy as hell. Assuming you're playing on Medium you should earn 100 development points. Dev points help to increase your guy's attributes to make him stronger.
