Okay, I've decided that we need a thread where each of us can recommend an album that everyone needs to have in their collection. Basically, post the name of the album, the band, when it was released, the track listing, a description of the album, and a picture of the album if you can. I'll get the ball rolling:
Album:DCLXVI-To Ride, Shoot Straight and Speak the Truth
Band:Entombed
[image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B00000055B.01.MZZZZZZZ.jpg]
Year of Release:1997
Track Listing:
To Ride, Shoot Straight and speak the Truth
Like This With the Devil
Lights Out
Wound
They
Somewhat Peculiar
DCLXVI
Parasight
Damn Deal Done
Put Me Out
Just As Sad
Boats
Uffe's Horrorshow
Wreckage

Description:
Brutal. Agressive. Grooving. These three words best encapsulate DCLXVI, easily one of the greatest albums of the 90s. The best comparion for this album would be if you mixed Deicide with Motorhead, with a bit of AC/DC on the side. In other words, a viceral, yet groovy album that is relentless in it's ferocity. Stand out tracks include:
Like This With the Devil
Lights Out
Somewhat Peculiar (Based on Calvin & Hobbes!)
DCLXVI (Piano)
Parasight
Damn Deal Donr
Put Me Out
Boats
Wreckage

Allright, I've done mine. Now it's your turn.
Side Note: I chose not to include "City" by Strapping Young Lad, as I know Metallideth would have a fit if he didn't get a chance to wax lyrical about it. But I'll probably do "Infinity" down the line.

AND NOW FOR A MESSAGE FROM KERSH:

I REQUESTED THIS TO BE A STICKY THREAD, SO BLAME ME FOR THE OTHER THREAD'S DEATH.

I'M GOING TO LOOK AFTER THIS ONE, AND DELETE ANY POSTS THAT DON'T CONTAIN 'MUST OWN' ALBUMS.

THAT IS ALL.

Kersh

Just to add, because the thread's grown vastly in size, new conditions are to be implimented :-

Firstly, dont include more than two albums per post.

Also, please refrain from posting albums that others have already mentioned. Dragging down the thread for 56kers with repeat posts of albums just isnt fair

Classic visceral metal album, with amazing riffage throughout. MH never bettered their debut - an album that a band such as Pantera would only dream of making.

Another great British band, Godflesh never quite equalled the greatness of their classic Industrial-Grindcore album Streetcleaner. Harsh, abrasive and ultimately depressing...

[image=http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/rammsteinsehnsucht.JPG]

Rammstein - Sehnsucht
Release Date: 1998

1. Sehnsucht
2. Engel
3. Tier
4. Bestrafe Mich
5. Du Hast
6. Buck Dich
7. Spiel Mit Mir
8. Klavier
9. Alter Mann
10. Eifersucht
11. Kuss Mich

Call them what you well, whether it be electronic metal, industrial metal, whatever the tag - the bottom line is that Rammstein rock. Raiding a musical inheritance of Richard Wagner and Kraftwerk, Rammstein force both to march to the industrial-metal grinding of Ministry and Depeche Mode - with a dash of Laibach thrown in for good measure. With harsh, metronomic rhythms topped off with bassy, almost haunting vocals delivered entirely in German, Rammstein's every move is planned to deliver a sonic blitzkrieg.

[image=http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/spitcd170.JPG]

Dog Fashion Disco - Anarchists of Good Taste
Release Date: 2001

1. Leper Friend
2. 9 To 5 At The Morgue
3. Mushroom Cult
4. Antiquity's Small Rewards
5. Headless

7. Valley Girl Ventriloquist
8. Pour Some Urine On Me
9. Vertigo Motel
10. Cartoon Autopsy
11. Pink Riots
12. Albino Rhino

With more stops, starts, changes of tempo and style, bursts of Nosebleed-inducing heaviness and flashes of bewitching subtlety than anyone can possibly shake a stick at, this is an album that could be overwhelming for some at times. If you're looking for down-tuned crunch with sinister fairground music, wheezing B-movie keyboard sounds, half satanic lounge music etc - This is where it's at. They've been described as Tool jamming with Devo, conducted by Frank Zappa and that wouldnt be far wrong citing influences from the likes of Maynard and co to the joys of Mike Patton and in particular Mr Bungle. All in all - Deranged musical carnage from Washington DC.

[image=http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/5496392.JPG]

Rammstein - Mutter
Release Date: 2001

3. Sonne
4. Ich Will
5. Feuer Frei
6. Mutter
7. Spieluhr
8. Zwitter

Mutter built on the qualities that Sehnsucht had set. This time though it's the melodies and sheer orchestral ferocity of Rammstein's sound that shine throughout. Classic..

Metallica - ...And Justice For All

1. Blackened (Hetfield/Newsted/Ulrich) - 6:40

4. One (Hetfield/Ulrich) - 7:24
5. The Shortest Straw (Hetfield/Ulrich) - 6:35
6. Harvester of Sorrow (Hetfield/Ulrich) - 5:42
7. The Frayed Ends of Sanity (Hammett/Hetfield/Ulrich) - 7:40
8. To Live Is to Die (Burton/Hetfield/Ulrich) - 9:48
9. Dyers Eve (Hammett/Hetfield/Ulrich) - 5:12

Released: September 6, 1988

My review: This, IMO, is Metallica's best album and is more consistent than Master of Puppets and Ride The Lightning. It is also pretty long: 66 minutes or 2 LP's but every minute is good. This is bassist Jason Newsted's debut album. The guitar is just heavy and the lyrics are superiour. The album starts off with a bang and ends with a bang with "Dyer's Eve." If you love metal (or even rock), get this!

11. The Sleep (Pantera) - 5:47
12. The Art of Shredding (Pantera) - 4:16

Released: July 24, 1990

My review: This is Pantera's best work! It features the song "Cemetary Gates" which is absolutely incredible. Words cannot describe this song that good. More great songs are "Domination" (incredible outro), "Heresy", "Psycho Holiday", and the title track. Hell, they're all worth mentioning. Get this one also, if you like metal, if you don't already have it.

Reason: Really turned me on to death metal mayhem once and for all. Industrial metal demure, but death metal in style. FF exploded out with aggression and power, and surprised even the most valid of death metal followers.

Reason: While many will downplay this album and its style, I cannot sway from the influence this album had on me. A way to be melodic, yet still focused on heavy music regardless. "Wading Through The Darkness", "Hypodermic Midnight Snack", "Swatting At Flies"...I think these songs really speak of what this album was all about. Imo, it's a great acquisition to a heavy collection.

[ol][li]Holy Wars... The Punishment Due[/li][li]Hangar 18[/li][li]Take No Prisoners[/li][li]Five Magics[/li][li]Poison Was The Cure[/li][li]Lucretia[/li][li]Tornado Of Souls[/li][li]Dawn Patrol[/li][li]Rust In Peace... Polaris[/li][/ol]

Reason: Need I say anything at all? This is an absolute must have. From the intricate layering of Marty Friedman, to the hammering rhythm of Dave Mustaine, this album had it all a speed metal band could have in an offering. These guys came to play with this release, and they certainly did the job well.

After the devastating loss from their previous recording So Far... So Good... So What? from 1988, they needed something to spark interest in the band again, so they went into the studio and produced a gem. There is no release from it's grasp, and takes you on a journey to a land of loud, fast, and heavy music and brings you back scarred and ready for another go. If you don't have this, get it now damnit!

Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness
Green Carnation
2002

[ol][li]Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness (60 minutes)[/li][/ol]

Reason: Now, the length of this song is pretty insane, but the band incorporates a ton of emotion into that time period. Gotta have it because of the wonderful production and concept of such a long song. If you are going to produce a concept album of this magnitude, then this is the way to do it. It's a rollercoaster of highs and lows, extremely heavy with hints of classical music throughout. It has its own atmosphere of dark proportions that will befall you into a stupor of wonder and amazement, and make you think about your own endeavors and conquests. Then leave you in a slow, but abrupt manner, thus making you wonder if it is indeed over. Must have, no doubt about it.

1999

[ol][li]D.N.R.[/li][li]Down For Life[/li][li]Eyes Of Wrath[/li][li]True Believer[/li][li]Three Days In Darkness[/li][li]Legions Of The Dead[/li][li]Careful What You Wish For[/li][li]Riding The Snake[/li][li]Allegiance[/li][li]Sewn Shut Eyes[/li][li]Fall Of Sipledome[/li][li]Hammer Of The Gods[/li][/ol]

Reason: Each time I hear this album, I wonder to myself "why can't anyone produce speed metal like this anymore?" It's almost like bands stopped trying to do so, but I credit Testament to their successful persistence. Riff after riff are belted out in consistent fashion and along with Billy's vocals, this maintains the focus to the music, strictly. Just listen to "Fall Of Sipledome" and you'll know just what I mean. Gotta have this with other Testament greats. They show you how it's really done.

Divine Intervention
Slayer
1994

[ol][li]Killing Fields[/li][li]Sex.Murder.Art[/li][li]Fictional Reality[/li][li]Dittohead[/li][li]Divine Intervention[/li][li]Circle Of Beliefs[/li][li]SS-3[/li][li]Serenity In Murder[/li][li]213[/li][li]Mind Control[/li][/ol]

Reason: While other albums that Slayer threw out there, this one stands out to me as one of the most intricate and conceptualized. It speaks about the darker side of humanity, and the indecencies of a society ripped apart by homocide. The album starts out on a furious pace with Killing Fields and continues pace until Dittohead, an incredibly speedy/thrashy sounding song that fuels Slayer's reputation of one of the best metal acts ever. Then the album takes a turn toward a lenghthier and more direct approach. Taking aspects of religion and murder and putting them together. Then comes on 213, which rivals most metal songs like it. This album had it's own atmosphere, yet different from most other albums of theirs. Simply blew me away.

[image=http://www.chedsey.com/images/type_o/world.jpg]
World Coming Down
Type O Negative
1999

[ol][li]Skip It[/li][li]White Slavery[/li][li]Sinus[/li][li]Everyone I Love Is Dead[/li][li]Who Will Save The Sane?[/li][li]Liver[/li][li]World Coming Down[/li][li]Creepy Green Light[/li][li]Everything Dies[/li][li]Lung[/li][li]Pyretta Blaze[/li][li]All Hallows Eve[/li][li]Day Tripper (medley)[/li][/ol]

Reason: The first noticeable difference between this album and other Type O Negative albums is the exceptional production of the music. The band achieves rare goth metal sound quality, in a genre (Doom) that is marred by horribly produced albums. The vocals boom, the guitars rip through the riffs, the drums pound, and the keyboards and sound effects just seem to float in as an overture to the album. The songs themselves consist of mostly the same material of the last two albums with a focus on the feelings surrounding death and rejection. The music itself has slowed considerably. Gone are the punk influenced faced paced songs from the Slow, Deep, and Hard era. Instead the band decided to take the time to try and build on their tales of woe. Of the tracks that are songs, none are under six minutes, as the band lets the musical element take center stage on this album. Something I was impressed with. I'm telling you now, you don't have this, you're missing out.

There are simply too many essential metal albums to post them all, but these 3 are probably the tops of my list...

Death - "Symbolic"
Year of Release: 1995

[image=http://www.metal-archives.com/images/616.jpg]

Track Listing:
1. Symbolic
2. Zero Tolerance
3. Empty Words
4. Sacred Serenity
5. 1,000 Eyes
6. Without Judgment
7. Crystal Mountain
8. Misanthrope
9. Perennial Quest

Death was one of the bands who was responsible for the start of what is known as death metal. Though they started out as a more brutal death metal band, they progressed to what IMO is the greatest death metal band of all time. The best way to describe this album is progressive death metal, and this album could be the result of Dream Theater meets Nile. Death was headed by Chuck Schuldiner (RIP), who was one of the best if not the greatest guitar player ever. Everything on this album is brilliant. The way they go from the heavy riffs to the brilliant solos is mind boggling, and this is how metal should be played. Very essential to any fan of metal.

Soilwork - "Natural Born Chaos"
Year of Release: 2002

[image=http://www.metal-archives.com/images/83.jpg]

Track Listing:
1. Follow the Hollow
2. As We Speak
3. The Flameout
4. Natural Born Chaos
5. Mindfields
6. The Bringer
7. Black Star Deceiver
8. Mercury Shadow
9. No More Angels
10. Soilworker's Song of the Damned

This is the best release of 2002 so far and it's quite possibly the greatest album I have ever heard in my life. The guitars in this album will hook you in from the start. So much beautiful harmony is emmitted through their guitars throughout this whole album. Every song brings a new catchy riff to the table, and I gaurantee you will be humming this whole album the 2nd or 3rd time you have listened to it. Strid (vocals) also does a great job with his vocals. He can go from a great agressive melodic death metal voice right into a magnificent clean vocal style. It's one of those albums that you will swear a certain song is your favorite, but then the next tune will be just as good. Simply incredible album!

Album:Determination
Band:God Forbid
[image=http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre600/e696/e69686v1vdg.jpg]
Year of Release:2001
Track Listing:
Dawn of the Millenia
Nothing
Broken Promise
Divide My Destiny
Network
Wicked
Determination Part1
Determination Part2
Go Your Own Way
God's Last Gift
A Reflection of the Past
Dead Words on Deaf Ears

Description:
Sounding like an un-holy mix of Pantera and Arch Enemy-but much heavier, God Forbid are about as subtle as an axe in the face. But there is beauty hidden behind the brutality, for beneath every anguished bellow, beside every viceral riff, there is a melody, or a majestic solo that compliments an otherwise very intense album. Make no mistake about it, God Forbid are unpologetic in their intensity, but throughout the maelstrom, they leave you with a smile on your face. Highly recommended.

Sweden's In Flames incorporates beautiful, unforgettable melodies into its progressive power-metal mix. Colony is also complex and classically influenced, proving that heavy metal can be intellectually stimulating -- guitarists Jesper Stomblad and Björn Gelotte are practically virtuosos. While In Flames's guitar approach is similar to that of legends Iron Maiden and At The Gates, Anders Friden's shredding screams secure the Swedish quintet's originality.

Nailbomb, which was started just for kicks at the end of the Sepultura/Fudge Tunnel tour, also grants Cavalera and Newport the opportunity to experiment with sounds and styles unfitting to their full-time bands. Point Blank is filled with industrial percussion and eerie samples, displaying the members' liking for bands such as Ministry and Godflesh. Three tracks on the album spotlight lead guitar work by Sepultura's Andreas Kisser, six showcase Sepultura's drummer Igor Cavalera, and one features rhythm guitar work by Fear Factory's Dino Cazares. Since Nailbomb isn't a real band, the members aren't aiming for any level of prominence or marketability. As a result, Point Black unwinds with zeal and spontaneity, revealing the enthusiasm both Cavalera and Newport feel for the project. Steady your aim and fire to "Wasting Away," "Blind And Lost," "Guerrillas" and "For ****s Sake."

From the devious swing of "Beautiful People" through the seductive gloom of "Cryptochild" to the furious rant and rave of "1996," each track is punctuated by Manson's vocals, which communicate pain, passion, fear, hate and euphoria in one mighty, ear-piercing roar. It's an aural skull-**** you'd never expect from a shock-metal entourage that previously had seemingly put its image before its instruments.

Stabbing Westward is a rock critic's dream. The band's overall quality can be pared down to one essential element: live drums. A human drummer may seem like a minor point-it's far less noticeable than Ungod's shimmering waves of noise and banshee vocals-but the live drumming gives this industrial band a much greater sense of rhythmic ebb and flow than those tied to a drum machine's silicon cadences. Ungod has a penchant for big sounds, thundering beats that climb over brief respites of echoing feedback, and being able to pin that to the percussive abilities of drummer David Suycott makes the job of writing about the record an easy one. Good thing, because describing the songs' dozens of details and broad spectrums of noise could be a daunting task. Likewise, cataloging the lyrics' litanies of bile and spite could prove difficult. And what's left to say other than there is some spectacular noise here? Well, that Ungod's guitars roar out of the mix, blasting through some of the most well-crafted aggro ambience since Trent Reznor was canonized, and that Stabbing Westward is probably the best band to come out of the Chicago school of industrial arts since Al Jourgensen discovered tattoo parlors and stroke mags.

It contains some excellent stompy dance tracks like Bunkertor 7, Capital Punishment, Mortal Highway and some excellent slow tracks like Thorns and Die In Winter.
The title track of the CD is the track that the media said a pair of teenagers who killed some classmates in Germany listened to.

Ride The Lightning
Metallica
1984

[ol][li]Fight Fire With Fire[/li][li]Ride The Lightning[/li][li]For Whom The Bell Tolls[/li][li]Fade To Black[/li][li]Trapped Under Ice[/li][li]Escape[/li][li]Creeping Death[/li][li]The Call Of Ktulu[/li][/ol]
From CDNow:
"While Metallica’s debut album Kill 'Em All was nothing more than a brutal assault, this follow-up is marked by a greater sense of craftsmanship in both writing and playing. Ride the Lightning takes everything great from its predecessor, and begins to add the sounds of experience and confidence. It’s still a bunch of kids doing the only thing they know how to do, without the "benefit" of a slick production and management team -- but that’s what makes this CD what it is. The songs are too long and generally too unpolished for commercial airplay, yet that didn’t stop the album from becoming a success and propelling Metallica toward the mega-stardom.

On the merits of "Fade to Black" alone, this album would qualify as a must-have. But more importantly, this early Metallica is what inspired 90% of the metal genre in the '80s and beyond. It’s not only great to listen to, but it’s significant from a historical perspective as well. Ride the Lightning is raw energy, pure and unadulterated. A little rough around the edges, perhaps, but a landmark album no headbanger should be without.

Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

[image=http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drc300/c351/c35165m16xl.jpg]

1. Black Sabbath (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 6:16
2. The Wizard (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:18
3. Wasp/Behind the Wall of Sleep/Bassically/N... (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 10:40
4. Wicked World (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:42
5. A Bit of Finger/Sleeping Village/Warning (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 14:20

Released May, 1970

Review from AMG:
Black Sabbath's debut album is given over to lengthy songs and suite-like pieces where individual songs blur together and riffs pound away one after another, frequently under extended jams. There isn't much variety in tempo, mood, or the band's simple, blues-derived musical vocabulary, but that's not the point; Sabbath's slowed-down, murky guitar rock bludgeons the listener in an almost hallucinatory fashion, reveling in its own dazed, druggy state of consciousness. Songs like the apocalyptic title track, "N.I.B.," and "The Wizard" make their obsessions with evil and black magic seem like more than just stereotypical heavy metal posturing because of the dim, suffocating musical atmosphere the band frames them in. This blueprint would be refined and occasionally elaborated upon over the band's next few albums, but there are plenty of metal classics already here. — Steve Huey

[image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KHH.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg]

1. War Pigs/Luke's Wall (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 7:55
2. Paranoid (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 2:50
3. Planet Caravan (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:30
4. Iron Man (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 6:00
5. Electric Funeral (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:50
6. Hand of Doom (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 7:10
7. Rat Salad (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 2:30
8. Jack the Stripper/Fairies Wear Boots (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 6:15

Released: September, 1970

Review from AMG:
Paranoid was not only Black Sabbath's most popular record (it was a number one smash in the U.K., and "Paranoid" and "Iron Man" both scraped the U.S. charts despite virtually nonexistent radio play), it also stands as one of the greatest and most influential heavy metal albums of all time. Paranoid refined Black Sabbath's signature sound — crushingly loud, minor-key dirges loosely based on heavy blues-rock — and applied it to a newly consistent set of songs with utterly memorable riffs, most of which now rank as all-time metal classics. Where the extended, multi-sectioned songs on the debut sometimes felt like aimless jams, their counterparts on Paranoid have been given focus and direction, lending an epic drama to now-standards like "War Pigs" and "Iron Man" (which sports one of the most immediately identifiable riffs in metal history). The subject matter is unrelentingly, obsessively dark, covering both supernatural/sci-fi horrors and the real-life traumas of death, war, nuclear annihilation, mental illness, drug hallucinations, and narcotic abuse. Yet Sabbath makes it totally convincing, thanks to the crawling, muddled bleakness and bad-trip depression evoked so frighteningly well by their music. Even the qualities that made critics deplore the album (and the group) for years increase the overall effect — the technical simplicity of Ozzy Osbourne's vocals and Tony Iommi's lead guitar vocabulary; the spots when the lyrics sink into melodrama or awkwardness; the lack of subtlety and the infrequent dynamic contrast. Everything adds up to more than the sum of its parts, as though the anxieties behind the music simply demanded that the band achieve catharsis by steamrolling everything in its path, including its own limitations. Monolithic and primally powerful, Paranoid defined the sound and style of heavy metal more than any other record in rock history. — Steve Huey

Black Sabbath - Master of Reality

[image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KDO.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg]

1. Sweet Leaf (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:05
2. After Forever (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:26
3. Embryo (Iommi) - 0:28
4. Children of the Grave (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:17
5. Orchid (Iommi) - 1:31
6. Lord of This World (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:26
7. Solitude (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:02
8. Into the Void (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 6:12

Released: July 1, 1971

Review from AMG:
With Paranoid, Black Sabbath perfected the formula for their lumbering heavy metal. On its followup, Master of Reality, the group merely repeated the formula, setting the stage for a career of recycling the same sounds and riffs. But on Master of Reality Sabbath still were fresh and had a seemingly endless supply of crushingly heavy riffs to bludgeon their audiences into sweet, willing oblivion. If the album is a showcase for anyone, it is Tony Iommi, who keeps the album afloat with a series of slow, loud riffs, the best of which — "Sweet Leaf" and "Children of the Grave" among them — rank among his finest playing. Taken in tandem with the more consistent Paranoid, Master of Reality forms the core of Sabbath's canon. There are a few stray necessary tracks scattered throughout the group's other early '70s albums, but Master of Reality is the last time they delivered a consistent album and its influence can be heard throughout the generations of heavy metal bands that followed. — Stephen Thomas Erlewine

SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Sweet Leaf, After Forever (definite must get!)

Black Sabbath - Volume 4

[image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KE2.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg]

1. Wheels of Confusion/The Straightener (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 8:14
2. Tomorrow's Dream (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) -3:12
3. Changes (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:46
4. FX (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 1:43
5. Supernaut (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 4:45
6. Snowblind (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:31
7. Cornucopia (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 3:54
8. Laguna Sunrise (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 2:53
9. St. Vitus Dance (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 2:29
10. Under the Sun/Every Day Comes and Goes (Butler/Iommi/Osbourne/Ward) - 5:50

Released: September 1, 1972

Review from AMG:
Vol. 4 is just a cut below its two undisputedly classic predecessors. However, it finds Sabbath beginning to experiment successfully with its trademark sound on tracks like the ambitious, psychedelic-tinged, multi-part "Wheels of Confusion," the concise, textured "Tomorrow's Dream," and the orchestrated piano ballad "Changes" (even if the latter's lyrics cross the line into triteness). But the classic Sabbath sound is still very much in evidence; the crushing "Supernaut" is one of the heaviest tracks the band ever recorded. — Steve Huey

SONGS TO CHECK OUT: Supernaut, Wheels of Confusion.

Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath

[image=http://images.amazon.com/images/P/B000002KET.01.LZZZZZZZ.jpg]

1. Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (TRO) - 5:42
2. A National Acrobat (Black Sabbath) - 6:16
3. Fluff (Black Sabbath) - 4:10
4. Sabbra Cadabra (Black Sabbath) - 5:55
5. Killing Yourself to Live (Black Sabbath) - 5:40
6. Who Are You? (Black Sabbath) - 4:10
7. Looking for Today (Black Sabbath) - 4:59
8. Spiral Architect (Black Sabbath) - 5:29

Released: December, 1973/January, 1974

Review from AMG:
With 1973's Sabbath, Bloody Sabbath (their fifth masterpiece in four years), Black Sabbath made a concerted effort to raise their creative stakes and dispensed unprecedented attention to the album's production, arrangements, and even the cover artwork. While faithful to the band's signature compositional style and sound, brilliant songs such as the title track, "A National Acrobat," and "Killing Yourself to Live" also displayed a newfound sense of finesse and maturity. The introduction of keyboards and synthesizers, on the other hand, meets with mixed results. Erstwhile Yes keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman makes a positive contribution to "Sabbra Cadabra." "Spiral Architect" benefits from its tasteful background orchestration, and the gentle "Fluff" is the first truly memorable solo instrumental from guitarist Tony Iommi, whose previous attempts often seemed pointless and haphazard. Simply put, this album is essential to any heavy metal collection. — Ed Rivadavia

Adrenaline
Deftones
1995

[ol][li]Bored[/li][li]Minus Blindfold[/li][li]One Weak[/li][li]Nosebleed[/li][li]Lifter[/li][li]Root[/li][li]7 Words[/li][li]Birthmark[/li][li]Engine No. 9[/li][li]Fireal[/li][li]Fist[/li][/ol]
From AMG:
"Adrenaline is an appropriate title for this, the Deftones' debut album, as all ten tracks explode with repressed energy. Unlike many of their contemporaries, the Deftones are very controlled even in the midst of chaos. The musical attack is precise and well organized without sounding mechanical or soulless. Simply put, this music is the product of a good old-fashioned band, with every element of the music fitting together nicely. One of the practical ways in which this expresses itself is the way that the Deftones groove, a skill that most nu-metal bands have somehow managed to lose along the way. Throw Abe Cunningham's surprisingly sophisticated drumming into the mix, and you have a band that possesses a far greater degree of nuance than most others that work in the genre. If there is a weakness to Adrenaline, it is that there is a bit of sameness in Chino Moreno's whispered vocal melodies, which drags the record down a bit. On later albums, the band's progressive tendencies become more developed, but the more straight-ahead material on Adrenaline does not disappoint. A promising debut." -- Daniel Gioffre (AMG)

White pony is the best deftones album

*realized long ago he's alone in his opinion*

Anyway...

My album is porcupine tree's lightbulb sun

Some older fans looked askance at Lightbulb Sun, feeling it was verging on overt commercialism (and admittedly, the near power ballad solo on "Where We Would Be" is a bit odd!). Then again, given Wilson's own explorations of avant-garde pop with No-Man, who's to say why a slightly more radio-friendly stance can't work? "Shesmovedon" may have been a single, but there's no question who wrote and performed it — the elegant cascade of backing vocals on the chorus shows that much. Certainly Wilson hasn't turned into Max Martin or anything — it's still very much Porcupine Tree, in its lyrical turns of phrase and general sense of exploration. One of the best tracks on the album is the brilliantly titled "Four Chords That Made a Million," a barbed cut on some unnamed "emperor in new clothes" beset by a "moron with a cheque book." The lead riff is a majestic hit of flange and feedback, while the hints of sitar and Indian percussion give the song even more attractive heft. But there's a definite bent towards calmer art pop throughout Lightbulb Sun — those who preferred the sheer surge of Stupid Dream will find this album tamer in comparison. Still, it's hard to resist the beautiful, understated tension about a fractured friendship or relationship on "Feel So Low" or the gentle, string-touched roll and build of "The Rest Will Flow," flat out two of Wilson's best tunes anywhere. Those who prefer the lengthy explorations won't be disappointed, though — "Hatesong" unfolds its sharp message over eight minutes and then the string-swept, slow time explosion of "Russia on Ice" over 13. Slyest title of the bunch — "Last Chance to Leave the Planet Earth Before It Is Recycled," which samples the videotape made by the leader of the Heaven's Gate cult before its mass suicide in 1997.

1. Lightbulb Sun (Wilson) - 5:31
2. How Is Your Life Today? (Wilson) - 2:46
3. Four Chords That Made a Million (Wilson) - 3:36

8. Where Would We Be (Wilson) - 4:12

Yea, I know what you're thinking. "It's not metal, or most of it isn't." While that's true, this album is a must have anyway. It gives the listener such an eerie feeling just hearing it. Consider it an "everything" soundtrack, because it's got many different styles of music on it. For these reasons alone, it's worth the purchase.

I'll continue soundtracks later. Work calls!

You aren't alone.

Deftones - White Pony

Release - June 20, 2000 (New Edition October 3, 2000)

1. Back to School (Mini-Maggit)
2. Feiticeira
3. Digital Bath
4. Elite
5. RX Queen
6. Street Carp
7. Teenager
8. Knife Prty
9. Korea
10. Passenger (featuring Maynard James Keenan)
11. Change (In the House of Flies)
12. Pink Maggit

Perhaps the best "nu-metal" album of all time. The love-it/hate-it voice of Chino Moreno makes it what it is, coupled with awesome production and unique table work.

Living Sacrifice
Conceived In Fire
Release: 09/24/02

Tracks:

1. Imminent War
2. Symbiotic
3. 3X3 We Carried Your Body
4. The Poisoning
5. Send Your Regrets
6. Subtle Alliance
7. Into Again
8. Separation
9. Black Seeds
10. Ignite
11. Distrust
12. The Martyr
13. Reach For The Sky

I just got this album today, and it's already blown me away. Living Sacrifice is a great band, and they have created what is arguably their best album yet. Even heavier and more brutal than previous releases, Conceived In Fire is a tour de force of incredible riffs, great solos, and harsh vocals with meaningful lyrics that will often leave you breathless. After one entire listening, I am almost about to call it the best album released so far this year, even above Dark Tranquillity's Damage Done. Conceived In Fire is a remarkable album that no metal listener should be without. Add it all up with an awesome looking cover, and you have yourself a must but album. Buy it now!

Damn, I really like what I see here... I never expected to come to this board and find Soilwork, In Flames, Opeth, and Sepultura under a must have albums thread... good job...

Now I guess I'll add my entries:

Gardenian - Soulburner
[image=http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drd900/d947/d94769hh68d.jpg]

Tracks:
01: As A True King
02: Powertool
03: Deserted
04: Soulburner
05: If Tomorrow´s Gone
06: Small Electric Space
07: Chaos In Flesh
08: Ecstasy Of Life
09: Tell The World I´m Sorry
10: Loss
11: Black Days

This album just kicks serious ass. If you're into the whole melodic death metal thing, this is a must own. A strange mix of death and power metal vocals actually turns out really well. As a True King is probably my favorite track.

Gardenian - Sindustries
[image=http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/dre400/e423/e42392gjmb9.jpg]

Tracks:
01: Selfproclaimed Messiah
02: Doom & Gloom
03: Long Snap To Zero
04: Courageous
05: The Heartless
06: The Suffering
07: Scissorfight
08: Sonic Death Monkey
09: Sindustries
10: Funeral

This album also kicks serious ass (imagine that). It's actually a lot different than Soulburner. No power metal vocals this time around. Death vocals for the verses and clean vocals for the choruses (similar to soilwork). My favorite track is Sonic Death Monkey.

You guys really should give either one of these albums a listen, they are both great... Gardenian is probably my favorite of the Gothenburg bands... Unfortunately they no longer have a record deal, but are supposedly shopping a new demo around... they were formally with Nuclear Blast... Also, one of their guitar players was a member of In Flames for a short time...

This is what I consider to be there best album ever. If you liked any of Metalica's albums, you will love this one. It's what I call there Greatist Hits Album because thats practacilly what it is. And if you like Classical music with Metal, It's a real nice treat.

Judas Priest-British Steel

[image=http://image.allmusic.com/00/amg/cov200/drf300/f306/f30660qz9oa.jpg]

1.Rapid Fire
2.Metal Gods
3.Breaking the Law
4.Grinder
5.United
6.You Don't Have To Be Old To Be Wise
7.Living After Midnight
8.The Rage
9.Steeler

One of the premier power metal albums of the 80's, Priests British Steel remains a landmark moment in metal. From the ultra-catchy Living After Midnight to the hard-edged hits Grinder and Breakin' the law this one is a must own.

Black Sabbath-Heaven and Hell

[image=http://www3.hmv.co.uk/hmv/Large_Images/HMV/ESMCD330.JPG]

1.Neon Knights
2.Children of the Sea
3.Lady Evil
4.Heaven and Hell
5.Wishing Well
6.Die Young
7.Walk Away
8.Lonely is the Word

Ronnie James Dio's first Black Sabbath album is a true classic, and one of the bands best. Neon Knights and Lady Evil are blistering numbers, Children of the Sea is a powerful "ballad", and it's title track may be Sabbaths overall best.

Fixing the Judas Priest album cover and Black Sabbath tracklist. WR297

Emperor - Anthems To The Welkin At Dusk

1. Alsvartr (The Oath)
2. Ye Entrancemperium
3. Thus Spake The Nightspirit
4. Ensorcelled By Khaos
5. The Loss And Curse Of Reverence
6. The Acclimation Of Bonds
7. With Strength I Burn
8. The Wanderer

Review

This album is absolutely brilliant, and the best black metal album I've ever heard. I love the intro track to this, with very slow, mournful guitaring, and eerie chanting/spoken word in the background, and when Ye Entrancemperium starts, it's orgasmic. I love the way the keyboards interact with the guitar and tight double bass-blast beat drumming. When the song changes tempo it's done so well, and it reaches so many climaxes that the first time you hear it it's quite overpowering! Ihsahn's clean vocal parts add a new dimension to the songs, in one of the more diverse black metal albums out there. The riffing varies from lightening fast to mournful and slow, where the keyboards continue to find powerfully original ways to interact with the guitar and Ihsahn's shredding vocals

Some of my favorites
Surprised some of these haven't been said yet.

Saigon Kick:The Lizard1992
Cruelty
Hostile Youth
Feel the Same Way
Freedom
God Of 42nd Street
My Dog
Pepermint Tribe
Love is on The Way
The Lizard
All Alright
Sleep
All I Want
Body Bags
Miss Jones
World Goes Round
Chanel

If one song is all you know, then you just don't know. Don't let the comercial success of 'Love is on the Way' fool you. This album has tracks that will make you doubt you are listening to the same band. 'Body Bags' and 'Peppermint Tribe' are HARSH. If you think this line is too cutesy for you, "Love is on the way, I can see it in your eyes....blahblahblah." Then maybe you can cater to "With tommyhawks of candy canes, we split their heads and eat the brains" from Peppermint...

Skin of my Teeth
Symphony of Destruction
Architecture of Aggression
Foreclosure of a Dream
Sweating Bullets
This was my Life
Countdown to Extinction
High Speed Dirt

Ashes in your Mouth

This was the album that I first started listening to that got me into Megadeth. 'Psychotron' has quickly become one of my new favorites from this disc. 'This Was my Life' is still my favorite though.

Metallica:Kill 'em All1983
Hit the Lights

This was the last of the older Met discs I picked up. I was a little leary about grabbing it at first but forgive my ignorant youth. I was still under the age of 20 when I first bought it. 'Lightning' was still my favorite. If you don't have this in your collection you're a fricken poseur.

1. One Second
2. Say Just Words

4. Mercy
5. Soul Courageous
6. Another Day
7. The Sufferer
8. This Cold Life
9. Blood of Another

12. Take Me Down
13. I Despair

This 1997 release displays an astounding sonic evolution when compared to the group's previous release, 1995's Draconian Times, and nothing remains of their early death/doom metal origins. Ambient keyboard melodies as well as the occasional drum machine - We're in the realms of Depeche Mode and The Sisters of Mercy here. Though fans of early Paradise Lost should approach with caution, there's no denying the quality of this radical but impressive departure.
