I think dead. Sometimes you dont have to show every death. I had my moments of liking Kenny and disliking him, BUT I think he served his purpose well as a character and definitley went out on a high and won some respect from me.

Kenny dies either way so he may not be included in the season 2 game even as a walker since he was in a hole or on the floor when he died and season 2 was set in the countrysides according to the last cut-scene
