The Silver Age Batman I grew up with was not the dark hero or nearly as violet as Batman is today. Nor was he psychotic. I wonder what keeps today's Batman from committing suicide.

I think that these days we see a lot of superheroes with far more depth than we have in the past. The hero doesn't have to be the knight in shining armor, but instead deals with many personality flaws and nuances that make them unique. It seems more believable imo, but I understand what you mean as well. I enjoyed him very much from the era when I was a kid.
