How do you attach items to your kart w/the game pad?

I searched the boards to find a thread on this, and the internet. Perhaps I am missing something that is "in plain sight", but this would keep me from being item spammed as badly at the finish line when I am in first place. I use the WiiU game pad. Thank you so much in advance for any help you can give.

Do you mean how to trail an item behind your kart to block other items? Simply hold down the Use Item button (should be ZL in the case of the Gamepad), and your item will "follow" you.

Edit: This only works with a handful of items, like banana peels and red/green shells

Yep no problem. If you happen to get the Super Horn close to first, that is your best item for defense since it can stop blue shells
