F1 2011 - Can't break and turn?

I haven't played an f1 game since Santa Monaco GP for Genesis, and I don't know much of anything about the real thing, so I'm a bit of a newb.

So, I'm wondering why is it that I cannot turn and brake at the same time? I can do that with a real car. I mean, I've never drove a real life F1 car before so I just assumed that I could do this and that maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I have the PC version, if that matters.

maybe because you have the option to let your tires to lock up, and your breaking too hard. because real F1 drivers are constantly breaking whilst cornering.
