It felt like filler with some fan service thrown in. I did find what they did with missy to be interesting and I hope they do more with that.

 

[ZERO_ninja]

I wasn't the episodes biggest fan, but I don't know if I can view an episode that shows us how the Martian Empire changed their ways from their early days in serials like the Ice Warriors to who they became by the Curse of Peladon as "filler". Probably the most pivotal moment in the history of the Ice Warriors and it was awesome to get to see Alpha Centauri in nuWho. I though the episode was alright, kinda slow in places and filled with walking stereotypes, but still okay enough.

It felt like Gatiss set out specifically to write a 70s Who episode and he succeeded for the most part. Alpha Centauri was a nice cameo, especially since they brought the original actress back.

You could definitely argue that Nardole seemed out of character but this was apparently written before Lucas' return was confirmed, so I can let it go (hehehe).
