Part 2 (or more) will definitely be necessary to rate this one. I did chuckle at how Moffat kept hammering on the video game metaphor while completely ignoring the obvious Matrix references.

I loved that, I don't know if it'll work as well a second time around, might drop to an 8/10 but for a first watch 10/10.

Really? Other than sharing a villain I don't see what connection they really will have. It told a stand alone story, I don't think The Pyramid at the End of the World and The Lie of the Land are needed to judge this any more than Hell Bent is needed to judge Heaven Sent.

It's very clearly a three part story. The episode ended on the cliffhanger of The Doctor being told by the Simulation Doctor to save Bill and Nardole from an imminent invasion of Earth by the Truth Monks, after they had run many simulations of how they would take over the planet.

And Heaven Sent ends with the Doctor getting back to Gallifrey ready to confront the Time Lords for killing Clara in Face the Raven. Yet Heaven Sent still works completely stand alone aside from that linking ending as a story about processing grief and the mystery of what's going on where the Doctor is trapped.

Similarly this week has a linking ending, but works as a completely stand alone story of the people in the simulation coming to discover who they are and responding to that. Nothing that happens in the following 2 episodes is needed to complete that story, we're just going to see what the monks have planned going forward. If you removed the monks from the episode and the linked ending and just made it some mysterious entity had created it for experiments the episode would suddenly become completely self contained with the tiniest of changes. Yes there are linking parts, but overall it's a very stand alone story that leads into the next rather than a part 1 of 3 that's ended unresolved. The story of all those simulation characters has already resolved.

It's much more Heaven Sent, stand alone story that happens to form part of a larger arc than it is Zygon Invasion a part one that is incomplete without its part two.

I don't class Face The Raven/Heaven Sent/Hell Bent as a three parter because it's three separate adventures but Extemis/The Pyramid At The End Of The World/Lie of the Land definitely seems to be a three parter to me. Same monsters, plus Extremis is a clear set up for the next two episodes.

It looks to be all one story to me.
