Death in Fire Emblem Awakening

Just got the game only a few missions in, but if someone dies are they dead in the story too or just combat?

Not sure how it is in Awakening since I never had anyone die, but if it's anything like the older games the really important characters will survive to appear in the story. I'm sure someone like Frederick or Lissa will still be in the story scenes but will be unavailable as a playable unit. However, for the purpose of the gameplay they will be dead.

Depends on your level I believe. A certain level will make them retreat from the battlefield and can return in the next fight. But in different levels, once they're dead, they're dead

All the females + Frederick will only be dead in combat but alive in the story (to prevent paradoxes with the children)
