Rick Barnes will be fired as the coach of the Texas Longhorns, sources told ESPN.

Barnes leaves the university with a record of 402-180 over 17 seasons. He took the Longhorns to the NCAA tournament 16 times, including an appearance in the Final Four in 2003.

But the coach didn't have enough success in the Big Dance. Texas hadn't reached the second weekend since an Elite Eight appearance in 2008, and the Longhorns went one-and-done this season after going 20-13 and 8-10 in the Big 12.

Barnes, whose base pay package this season was $2.55 million, according to the Austin American-Statesman, had a contract that expired in March 2019 after he signed an extension following last season.

A clause in the coach's contract calls for a $1.75 million buyout if he is fired before April 1, according to the Austin newspaper. The payout would have decreased to $1.5 million next month.

The Longhorns won three Big 12 regular-season titles under Barnes. They never won the conference tournament with him, falling in the final six times.

Barnes, 60, joined Texas in 1998-99 after taking the Clemson Tigers to three straight NCAA tournament appearances. He also reached the NCAA tournament with Providence. Barnes reached 600 career wins earlier this season.

Texas entered the season ranked in the Associated Press top 10. The team was riding high hopes with highly touted freshman Myles Turner aboard.

But the 7-footer, who averaged 10.1 points and 6.5 rebounds per game, wasn't a significant factor down the stretch for the Longhorns and was limited to 14 points total in their last four games, scoring two in 16 minutes of a 56-48 loss to Butler in a round-of-64 NCAA tournament ouster.

Getting replaced by Shaka Smart. Sad to see him leave my school. Wish him the best. Fantastic coach.
