BMW dumped their credibility as a 'premium' brand when they joined the race to the bottom for sales. You knew the tipping point had come in England when there were more 3 Series sold than Mondeos per annum for the first time. In truth, they never made 'class leading' products in any area, at any time. The 8 Series was knocked into a cocked hat by the R129 SL. The E30 M3 looked poor next to the Sierra Cosworth. The E38 was nowhere near as good as the D2 A8 etc etc. But they've taken a beating lately, that's for sure.
