[blockquote]~A Beginners Guide to Posting on the Mixed Martial Arts Board~
[/blockquote] Before you begin posting on the MMA board there are a few "unofficial rules" that you should keep in mind to help make the board run more smoothly. While you won't be banned for breaking the rules like you would be banned for breaking the rules of the IGN terms of service you may be ridiculed for breaking them because we here like to keep things as simple and coordinated as possible. [face_peace]

[ol] [li] Official event threads can only be made by insiders. Examples of event threads can be seen [link=http://boards.ign.com/mixed_martial_arts_board/b8252/165485223/p1/?16]here[/link] and [link=http://boards.ign.com/mixed_martial_arts_board/b8252/166223230/p1/?46]here[/link]. if you decide to make an event thread please follow the general layout seen in each example. [/li] [li] Before posting a new thread regarding news about a fighter, check to see if that news has already been reported in an official thread. There may be an ongoing discussion already and posting a separate thread is not necessary. [/li] [li] Keep fight discussion in it's official corresponding event thread (ie. Rampage/Forrest talk in the UFC 86 thread. Fedor/Sylvia talk in Affliction thread) [/li] [li] Please do not make "Who is the best fighter at __lbs" type threads. We already have a rankings thread that get updated when necessary.

Q: What are some or the major organizations of MMA?
A: UFC, DREAM, WEC, Sengoku, EliteXC, Affliction, Strikeforce and Pride(now defunct)

Q: What happened to Pride?
A: Pride was sold to the UFC in early 2007. They operated from 1997 to 2007 and was widely considered to best MMA organization in the world. Unfortunately they had a lot of problems that lead to their downfall. Most notably they were linked with the Japanese mafia. They also lost their television deal they had in Japan.

Q: Why don't the Japanese organizations follow the same rules as the US ones?
A: Simply put, because they don't have to. In Japan there is no regulatory body like there is in the US. this is why they have slightly different rules.

Q: What is the differnce between Japanese MMA and US MMA?
A: Mainly rules and presentation. Japanese organizations used slightly differnt rules for MMA. Some key differences include:
[ul] [li] Use of a boxing ring instead of cages.
[/li] [li] Knees to the head of a downed opponent are legal
[/li] [li] Elbows to the head are illegal [/li] [li] Stomps to a downed oppenent are legal (PrideFC) [/li] [li] Yellow cards to promote activity. 1 yellow takes 10% of the fighter's purse for being timid/stalling. [/li] [li] Restarts in the center of the ring. Ropes can get in the way and if that is the case the fight can be restarted in the same position in the center of the ring. [/li] [li] Weight classes [/li] [li] Round length [/li] [/ul]Besides rules the Japanese organizations also like to put an emphasis on presentation due to the Japanese public's love of professional wrestling. Ring entrances are much flashier and are remeniscent of pro wrestling. Event videos are also very flashy and more diverse than the format that the UFC uses.

Q:
WTF does Joe Rogan keep talking about when the fight goes to the ground?
A: Most of the time when the fight goes to the ground Rogan goes into a confusing description of how one fighter is going for the Rubber Guard. He also likes to tell fighters "hey guy, you're doing it wrong"

Q: What is the Rubber Guard?
A: The Rubber Guard is a guard that was created by Joe Rogan's close friend and training partner Eddie Bravo. It's a guard system that requires a great amount of fexibility (hence rubber) and it is great in mma for keeping control and avoiding damage if properly done. Rubber guard moves are a complicated system of jumbled up words made up by Eddie Bravo and Joe Rogan loves to say them out loud to throw props to his homey. Moves include the likes of "New York", "Crack head control", "Chili Dog", "Zombie Control", "Jiu Claw", and "Pyramid" among others. ****, I have the explanation of the Rubber Guard book and I don't even get the names [face_tongue] So dont feel bad if you can't keep up with Rogan.

Q: So there's more than 1 type of guard?
A: Yes. Infact there's a whole lot of guards. Just some off the top of my head include full guard, open guard, half guard, rubber guard, spider guard, de la riva guard, and X guard. You'll rarely see most of these guards in MMA with exceptiong to the first few. Most are utilized in BJJ competitions.

Q: Who would win in a fight Bruce Lee or _____ mma fighter?
A: No one knows or really cares. And what does this have to do with MMA exactly? Is Bruce fighting in MMA now? If not then please don't post about it. This goes for Chuck Norris, Steven Segal and Jean Claude van Damme too. And any other move star fighter you can think of.

Q: Are pressure points allowed in MMA?
A: No (see: no pinching or twisting of the flesh)

Q: Why is that guy wearing a karate suit and why don't guys wear that more often?
A: First off he is wearing what is known as a Gi. In the early UFC you could come in wearing whatever you wanted but along the way the rules were changed so that you could only wear shorts. Gis can still be used in Japan but most fighters choose to go the modern way. One reason people choose to fight the modern way can be seen in the Wanderlai Silva vs. Kazuhiro Nakamura fight at Pride Critical Countdown 2005. Classic ownage.

Q: Why don't guys wear shoes anymore?
A: Because wearing shoes means it is easier to be caught in a leg lock. It is also argued that a shoe can add more force to a kick. They can still be worn in Japan but in the US no shoes are allowed.

Q: What is considered the back of the head?
A: The back of the head is the base of the croen of the head down to the centerline of the skull into the spine and one inch variance to each side. Common misconception is that the back of the head is anything behind the ears and the line where a pair of outter ear headphones would be.

Q: Why does Rodrigo Nogueira have a dent in his back?
A: He got ran over by a truck as a kid and had to have a rib removed. Not even the truck could knock him out, even as a little boy.

Q: What is the 'Randleplex'?
A: Watch Fedor Emelianenko vs Kevin Randleman to find out.

Q: What is being 'Cro Copped'?
A: To find out watch anyone of these fights: Mirko Filipovic vs Dos Caras Jr, Mirko Filipovic vs Alexander Emelianenko, Mirko Filipovic vs Igor Vovchanchyn and Mirko Filipovic vs Wanderlai Silva. You'll know when it happens. [face_mischief]

Q: What is a gogoplata?
A: A gogoplata is one of the hardest submissions to land in MMA and only a hand full have been done to date. It is when the guy basically chokes you with his shin bone while pinning your shoulder in between his leg. For a better understanding watch Shinya Aoki vs. Joachim Hansen or Nick Diaz vs. Takanori Gomi

Q:
Which is better a cage or a ring?
A: It is hard to say really but each one has their advantages. A ring is better suited for strikers so that they can corner opponents. Rings are also smaller so it is harder to run away and it promotes more action since there is relatively little space. A cage more favors wrestlers and GnP fighters. Strikers have a harder time handling opponents since you can't be cornered and there is a lot of space to escape to. The fence helps GnP fighters trap guys so they can't escape. Being pressed against the cage also can hinder BJJ and there is little to no space to move. On the other hand the cage can help a fighter get up if he can press his weight against the cage.

Q:
Why isn't Ninjitsu utilized in MMA?
A: Because the one time it was used it was it didn't end well for the ninjitsu fighter.

Q:
Man that ref was really screwing up the fight. He was obviously trying to get one of the fighters to win. Why did the UFC hire him?
A: Refs are employed by their respective state athletic commissions. US organizations do not employee referees so it's doubtful the ref was trying to help one fighter win. He has no vested interest in making one fighter win or lose. In Japan refs are employed by the organization since there is no athletic commission. Im just stating facts, not implying anything.

Q: What is a "worked" fight?
A: A "worked" fight is one in which both fighters agree to work toward a predetermined finish. A "thrown" fight is one in which one of the fighters takes a dive or allows himself to be defeated - his opponent may or may not be aware of it. For example Oleg-Macias was not a work because Oleg was clearly not aware that Macias was going to take a dive.

Q: So there have been worked fights before then, right?
A: Yes there have been but all of them took place early on in MMA's timeline. Most worked fights were done to build up a certain fighter that had mass appeal. In Japan worked fights were done in order to introduce the public to MMA. Most notably though works were used to build up Japanese superstars.

Here's a list of fights that are generally considered by consensus to be worked or thrown:

Oleg Taktarov vs. Anthony Macias (UFC VI) - According to Macias, Buddy Albin the local site promoter and manager of both fighters threatened that Macias' career would be over unless he took a dive against Oleg. Oleg was unware of this. Macias went on to win titles in several Albin-promoted events. Buddy Albin was a total sleeze bag BTW.

Dan Severn vs. Mitsuhiro Matsunaga (U-Japan) - Severn denies that his fight against pro wrestler Matsunaga was worked, but watching the fight itself leaves little doubt and the general consensus is that this was a worked fight.

Kimo vs Kazushi Sakuraba (S-Cup) - This was billed as a legit NHB fight on a Shootboxing card, but it turns out it was not legit (another NHB fight on the card, M. Illioukhin vs Mestre Hulk was legit). The fight looks very real and Kimo lands a number of really solid shots and headbutts. There are several versions of what took place in this fight, but perhaps the closest thing to the truth is the version that has Sakuraba carrying Kimo for most of the fight before finally taking a dive without Kimo's knowledge. That would explain Kimo throwing real shots and Sak playing defense the whole time and also the fact that Kimo vehemently (and convincingly) insists it was legit, yet Sakuraba has said on several occasions that his first shoot MMA fight was the Conan Silviera fight, not the Kimo fight.

Murakami Kazunari vs. John Dixon (Pride 1) - It was well-known in the fight community even before the first Pride took place that the Kazunari-Dixon and Kitao-Jones fights would be works. Pride's initial intent was to showcase different types of fights in addition to NHB - full contact karate, kickboxing and also shoot-style works like RINGS and PWFG. Later Pride would be more secretive about its worked fights.

Koji Kitao vs Nathan Jones (Pride 1)
- See above.

Nobuhiko Takada vs. Kyle Sturgeon (Pride 3)
- All of Takadas "wins" were blatant works. This is pretty much common knowledge. Takada was a popular pro wrestler who Pride saw as the perfect face for Japanese MMA. Unfortunately for them he wasn't very good. So they had to build him up somehow. They did so by faking his fights
Nobuhiko Takada vs. Mark Coleman (Pride 5) - See above.
Nobuhiko Takada vs. Alexander Otsuka (Pride 7) - See above.

Michael Bisping vs. Matt Hamill (UFC 75)-This is one of the most blatant fixes in modern MMA and one fight everyone is in agreement that a fix took place. This UFC event took place in London, England at the time where the UFC was pushing hard for UK expansion. Bisping hails from England so the UFC will do anything to make him their UK posterboy (MMA fans all agree that Bisping has been babied by the UFC since his TUF win). Already a favorite because of his win in The Ultimate Fighter Season 3 Bisping was put up against another TUF 3 contestant Matt Hammil. Hammil and Bisping nearly clashed on their season of TUF but a nose injury forced Hammil to bow out of the competition. Many though Hammil could have beat Bisping on TUF and this UFC 75 fight would produce fire works since both fighters have improved since their stints on TUF. The fight did not disappoint for the most part. It was a great fight that went to a judge's decision. Hammil controlled the entirety of the fight by landing takedowns and even out striking Biping. The judges saw it differently though and gave Bisping the split decision win. Bisping even had the nerve to taunt Hammil, who is deaf, when he was giving his victory speech. The reason many believe this to be a fix is due to the UFC's vested interest in Bisping as their UK posterboy and the fact that in the UK there is no comission that asigns refs or judges for MMA, so the UFC flew in their own refs and judges for this event. Even Dana White expressed digust in the Bisping win, but you know he was doing that just to save face and look innocent. Also at play was the fact that at that point Bisping was undefeated in his MMA career and having him lose, in front of his home crowd and to an American no less, would have been devistating to his image. Bisping went on to lose his next fight and is back to being babied by the UFC.

Here's a list of fights that are suspected of being works but there is no consensus agreement:

Don Frye vs. Mark Hall 3 (Ultimate Ultimate 2) - Several months after the fact Hall claimed that in the locker room before the match Frye had offered him $50,000 to take a dive so he would be fresh when he fought Tank in the finals (Frye had had a grueling match with Goodridge in the opening round and was exhausted). Hall came out with his accusations because, he said, Frye never paid him. Frye vehemently denied it and said Hall was a disturbed individual. Hall was blacklisted by the fight community and never fought again. The jury is still out on this one.

Naoya Ogawa vs. Gary Goodridge (Pride 6) - Anytime a pro wrestler (other than Sak) gets a win in Pride people will claim it was a work. Gary denies this was a work but many people suspect it was. Hard to tell for sure.

Naoya Ogawa vs. Masaaki Sataki (Pride 11) - See above.

Vitor Belfort vs. Joe Charles (Ultimate Japan 1) - Vitor was sick and refused to fight unless he was able to pick his opponent. He chose Charles who was one of his training partners at the time. No strikes were thrown in what turned out to be a grappling match, with Vitor winning by armbar. Whether this was a worked fight or they simply had a gentleman's agreement not to strike is open to question.

Mark Schultz vs. Leopoldo Montenegro (Jungle Fight 1) - Schultz claims this was work but everyone else involved denies it. There have been questions about some of Montenegro's other fights in the Inoki run promotion as well.

Pancrase works: - The Pancrase organiztion admitted that there had been some worked fights early on, but did not say how many or which ones. Fights that most people agree were works are Shamrock-Hume, Shamrock-Suzuki 2, and Suzuki-Funaki. A number of others are suspected. Bas Rutten claims that he never participated in a work in Pancrase.

Q: Where can I download this fight/event?
A: On the internet of course. But it's illegal and against the ToS to discuss such things. You're on your own for this one. Don't ask unless you want to be banned.

Q: Where can I watch this event? I don't want to pay for it but I want to see it live...
A: Again, against ToS to discuss. If you're gonna be cheap, do so quietly and don't go asking for a free show.

Q: What are some great fights that I should watch?
A: There are so many fights that are considered great it is really hard to narrow them down to just a few. Not only that but everyone has their own tastes. Some love a great ground/BJJ battle and other love the standup whether it be calculated or just 2 guys swinging wildly for the fences. Here's a few of my favorite fights (Keep in mind these fights are all in modern MMA. That isnt to say there aren't any great fights early on):

I got an addition:

Fedor Emelianenko lost to Tsuyoshi Kohsaka
Tsuyoshi Kohsaka lost to Bas Rutten
Bas Rutten lost to Masakatsu Funaki
Masakatsu Funaki lost to Frank Shamrock
Frank Shamrock lost to Yuki Kondo
Yuki Kondo lost to Wanderlei Silva
Wanderlei Silva lost to Chuck Liddell
Chuck Liddell lost to Keith Jardine
Keith Jardine lost to Stephan Bonnar
Stephan Bonnar lost to Forrest Griffin
Forrst Griffin lost to Dan Severn
Dan Severn lost to James Thompson
James Thompson lost to Kimbo Slice

Ergo, Kimbo Slice > Fedor Emelianenko.

MMAth does not work.
