as a former major defender of this game, nothing it does well can excuse how horrific of zionist neoliberal propaganda it is. neil druckmann and halley gross write in a faction into the game that is a stand-in for the real life Palestinian people and they are depicted as primitive religious zealots who are bigoted and do deplorable things like child marriages, and it pretends they are of equal structural power as the Israeli stand-in faction, in itself denying the real life 75 year brutal colonial occupation of the Palestinian people. as a trans person, i find its inclusion of queer and complex women characters some of the most offensive use of pinkwashing in the video game industry. if you at all care for humanity you should not give your money to this genuinely propagandic video game

this was such a tremendously sweet experience. not usually into these zen-type games but i got so hooked on this super simple premise. idk it's just so satisfying taking stuff out of boxes and organizing them in a relatively personalized way. the background story behind the unpacking process is also really lovely. i would love for a sequel one day just to have this experience go even deeper on a story/character level
i love a lot about this game but i think my favorite part is finally having a super easy and accessible game to recommend to my less gamer-y friends

its insane to go from playing alan wake 2 to this and find that the remedy team have always been absolute masters of their craft. i was expecting a 23 year old game to feel extremely dated but all of the gameplay, narrative, sound, and art design decisions here have made this thing completely timeless
i cannot wait for the remake for remedy to use their over two decades worth of game design expertise to polish this already near perfect game

solid gameplay and okay story. this is that good brain off 7/10 game nakeyjakey was going on about. unmemorable, unlike Rise of the Tomb Raider, but a decent 10 buck 10 hour pastime that looks and runs really nicely on ps5
major white saviorism on display though, the most in the reboot trilogy it seems. they gotta figure that out bc how long is lara just gonna keep saving brown communities that are functioning completely fine without her
also major case of the game playing itself here. i don’t remember Rise being this egregious with the amount of “hold forward to walk through crowd until we interrupt with a 2 minute cutscene so you can get back to holding forward again”

as a massive overwatch 1 fan, returning to this just pleasant i guess. like if you’re just looking for a fun time, it’s definitely still there like the old days. but if you’re looking for that same energy and novelty as the first couple years, it’s time to let that nostalgia go

is it too much to ask for that a game that looks as good as this and plays as nicely as this to just invest in creating a good, dare i say even memorable, atmosphere?
the driving feels good, the day/night functionality is genuinely cool, and the cop system is cool but wayyyy too inexplicably inconsistent and punishing, but man gun to my head i could not tell you a single memorable thing about palm city. i mean from underground 2 to even non-racing games like the GTA games and cyberpunk, if youre going to give your city a name, it should have something or anything going on to remember about it; any distinct landmarks, a catchy accompanying soundtrack, an interesting character or two. palm city just feels like a tech demo
the tutorialization in this game is horrible; half the systems are really poorly explained or just fully arent explained at any point. i should not have to open a youtube video every 15 mins when i get into a police chase because the game has not explained what youre supposed to do to reliably get them off your trail. ramps work, but most of the time dont and dont even show ip on the map for some reason. the map icons are also too similar and not color coded so good luck not mixing everything up in a pinch. circling buildings works, but only half the time. why do they even have health bars when you cant ram into them without obliterating yourself in the process?? cool ideas ruined by clearly untested optimizations. the difficulty slider in this game does NOTHING.
car customization is really cool though. one of the only ways to inject personality into this completely inhuman world

ill keep it as brief as i can because itd be a waste of time trying to precisely articulate what makes this game so incredible
remedy are masters of tone. this game is funny, depressing, sweet, horrifying, goofy, and tense all at once and at impeccable pace. the mixture of gameplay and storytelling here is some of the most innovative stuff ive ever seen from a AAA game studio. every time you think youve seen all the game has to offer it surprises you, again and again, for 20 hours (in my case 30 hours because the resource boxes that in any other game would be a simple “press X to open and collect” were some of the best puzzles and some of the most rewarding things ive ever encountered playing a game)
above all this game really made me feel smart, in a way no other detective/problem-solving game ever has. its puzzles arent complex math equations (except for those couple of resource boxes that literally require you to whip out a notebook and do a few minutes of actual math (i love remedy so much dude)), but it lets you feel frustrated sometimes so that arriving at the solution always feels earned
i hate referring to art as “perfect” but damn it remedy, god damn it remedy.

playing this game the first time around was already awesome but the second playthrough is genuinely otherworldly fantastic. once youre somewhat familiar with how remedy engages with gameplay and specifically narrative you begin to see all the minut details that make their games so unique and innovative. the impeccable blend of quirky relatability and mystique to every character and location in this game makes the world so addictive. the precision of sound, color, and mechanics makes it almost impossible to believe regular old people in an office made this game. even with some issues making its main story and characters as engaging as its design and gameplay, this game is so much greater than the sum of its parts. i cant even imagine what a sequel for a game this polished and brilliant would even look like!

this game is so fantastic. genuinely incredible. there arent enough adjectives in the book for how good this game is. i wont waste time going through all the things it does right, it is just so immensely in command of the players’ emotions at all times, making every story beat and game mechanic feel immersive. it’s a true celebration of the couch co-op experience, im so genuinely glad i waited years for the opportunity to play it side by side with someone

an extremely polished and immersive world. i actually kinda liked that this big open world only served as a free roam setting with no side missions or anything. some characters are a bit limited in depth but the overall mafia drama was very engaging. the movement is a little clunky but the gameplay overall is very strong. i found a lot of the gameplay wildly difficult on the first playthrough but on the second playthrough i realized its just the right balance of tough but with a clear ruleset so you just need to learn to get in the groove of knowing when to cover/when to shoot and how to maneuver around the police. im surprised how underrated this game is in all honesty, the quality of stylization is out of this world

pretty rough around the edges gameplay wise and tv production wise but overall a pretty great and creative game. the unconventional nature of the gameplay to live action tv show went away pretty quickly and i found myself really invested in the tv show story. some of the character work is really good and the story isnt afraid to make some bold choices that kept me hooked. i just wish the gunplay and time abilties and traversal mechanics were more polished, moving around and shooting felt a lot like i was playing a great ps3 game rather than a ps4 game that released a month before uncharted 4. definitely the kind of game that would benefit from a sequel, which i guess CONTROL kinda spiritually is and benefitted a lot from the foundations set here

the story is really well done and well acted in english. the game pours a lot of heart into its characters and locations and it makes everything feel alive and beautiful. the gameplay mechanics are really specific but they all work in a narrative sense and the difficulty slowly increases as the game goes on in a satisfying way. the developers are quite creative with the primitive mechanics they provide you with, making a lot of somewhat basic levels surprisingly tense, definitely got my hands sweaty lol. tip for anyone reading this though, don’t turn off the HUD. i thought itd be more immersive as the game advertises, but it instead made a lot of levels impossible to beat on the first or even second try without certain stealth and ammo indicators; feels like if theyre gonna give that option and label it “immersive” then the design should at least somewhat adapt so that levels arent basically unbeatable in that mode. all that said, super underrated and memorable gem of a game, im excited to get my hands on the sequel!

i dont know if i love this game so much because im a writer so all of the metaphors and writing related struggles hit closer to home or what but i had to make myself put it down to get some sleep between episodes. remedy are masters at balancing a perfect lighthearted/serious tone and creating an endlessly thrilling vibe. the voice acting here is phenomenal, and while the gameplay is somewhat basic and limited it works incredibly well in making you feel like youre just some middle aged guy barely making it through a horror story, complete ludonarrative harmony. characterization is fantastic although i wish we couldve gotten more development for some of the more essential side characters. all i can say is i deeply understand why this is a cult classic. it knows when and how to be incredibly thrilling and when to not take itself too seriously. outside of the signature 2000s green-gray filter on everything, its surprisingly comparable to today’s titles in terms of complete immersion. i will forever love how remedy challenges mainstream video game conventions and doesnt water down their vision for their games even if it makes them less mass market friendly. this game will definitely stay with me for a while
