Odyssey gives Mario great freedom of movement; the controls and movement are excellently done. The biggest problem is that many of the moons are tedious to get or are simply uninteresting to get. A vast majority of the worlds don't build on their unique mechanics or strengths enough to make them satisfying. The game has a great look and is clearly well-polished, along with some great music as well.

Quake [2021]Beat

A great remastering of a game that was a masterpiece on its release but has since suffered the sands of time. Quake's biggest issue was lackluster endings. The added campaigns make up for this. Quake is possibly the fastest of the fps genre and its a shame that Quake didn't get a DOOM (2016) treatment. I'll settle for this remaster, which attempts to bring classic Quake into the current gaming landscape. Instead of treating its antiquated graphics like they are simply dated, the remaster is offering us to find the charm of them. And in truth, we can hopefully find the charm in them by going back to the original. The difference is smoothness. The movement of the remaster is more fluid and smooth, which was already the game's strength. It would be interesting to see a new Quake, a la Doom, but with a keen interest in the fast movement, further than that, speedrunning.

This first game actually establishes a creepy atmosphere, despite being entirely reliant on jumpscares. The idea of locking your character down is a unique and effective way of adding tension. Its too bad that by even the sequel, the games are so far up their own *** in lore and easter eggs that they become a joke.

Great aesthetics, and mechanics. The Leshy's last stage is a tad underwhelming, and the third act of the story is too repetitive of the first. The genre fusions work well. The challenge runs are well done and are addicting; I managed to complete a run with every challenge modifier active.

After playing DOOM Eternal, playing the 2016 DOOM feels so slow. The biggest difference between these two games is the speed of the combat. Eternal isn't blazing fast like the fps of the 90s, but it is much faster than '16, and the shooting is much more varied than the classics. Certain enemies will have specific weaknesses and stronger enemies will have particular sequences you can perform of gun swapping and equipment usage that make it the most effective. Finding the most optimal way to slay the demons becomes a satisfying sort of mini puzzle. The weapon and combat systems are not overly complex and add another dimension to the combat. Doomguy has never felt more badass, and that is in large part due to Mick Gordon's music. The soundtracks for these modern DOOM games are instrumental in the success of these games.

Perfect follow-up to an already amazing title. Every aspect of the first is built upon, the portal mechanics, the lore, the puzzles, the humor, etc. The portal series is a one of a kind 3D puzzle-platformer with wit and charm in spades. The co-op mode is brilliant as well.

Diablo IV's combat is great the whole way through; the combat system stops being interesting at level 50, once the paragon boards are unlocked. The first 50 levels have you unlocking your abilities and the different effects they will have etc. Paragon board points are simply dull; e.g. +5 movement speed. Sure, that is nice to give your character, but it's just not as interesting and doesn't impact the combat nearly as much. Those first 50 levels, which is all you really need to complete the main story anyway, feel very good. Everything afterwards is just grindfest. The world in this game might be too big. There are so many side quests that it feels pointless to do them at all.
The main story was pretty good. There were some memorable characters and moments, and Lilith is an excellent antagonist. The gothic aesthetics from the visuals to the music are all well realized.

A wholly unique region, with unique pokemon; none of the old ones being catchable until after completing the main story, and its amazing. It didn't shake up the Pokemon formula, instead it offered an engaging story with moral ambiguity, and a cast of multi-dimensional characters, and it somehow manages to pull it off. In a kid's game. The region design was well thought out, consisting of varied locations, and things to explore. Obviously the game is way too easy as almost every Pokemon game is, but then again they're made for children. The animated 2D sprites of this game and its sequel are the peak of Pokemon's art style. This game caught a lot of flack on its release for its Pokemon designs, but I have never seen the legitimacy in these criticisms because Pokemon has always had some rather lazy designs, and this game isn't nearly as bad in that regard. It would be wrong of me to not mention the excellent music that exists in this game (and all of the DS era Pokemon games). It honestly might be Pokemon's pinnacle.
