When I finished this game, all I could think about was what an amazing experience this game was, and what a shame it was that I couldn't experience it for the first time again. This game succeeds fully in the goals it set out to achieve and presents itself perfectly. The game is centered around exploration and it doesn't have to do much pushing to make you want to explore its solar system. Each planet has its own unique puzzle to solve, and figuring out how each planet's story connects with each other is incredibly rewarding to figure out for yourself. This does bring up one potential flaw in the game and that's the text logs. Reading them thoroughly is required to learn how to beat the game, and I think for some this could be annoying. For me, I didn't mind this as I was already invested in the story & characters involved in the logs. I can't stress enough how creative this game is. The visuals are distinct and stick to the game's style. The music, while very minimal, is incredible. Not only are the actual tracks amazing, but the way they come in during eventful moments of discovery is fantastic. This game is amazing, enough said. I cant' wait for the DLC.

This is a pretty controversial take in the gaming world, but honestly, I just didn't get Fallout New Vegas. For the most part, I liked the stories of the game. The engaging questlines were what kept me playing for as long as I did. However, the gameplay is what brings this down so much for me. I spent most of my time in combat using guns and it always just felt clunky and unsatisfying to me. There are options to avoid combat, but even those options usually end up being some form of a persuasion check. While I'm glad that these alternative options are there, it does still feel like I'm just skipping over a lot of the content, which left me less engaged, and thus less invested in the story which had been dragging me along. Exploring the map also gets boring after a while. When you are first exploring the map, it is fun. Finding a place mentioned in a log entry and filing out the lore in my head was fun, but after all the iconic locations are discovered, exploring all parts of the map felt like a chore. The games' faults may be chalked up to it being older, and me deciding to play it on older hardware (Xbox 360), but it really just does not hold up to my modern standards of how a game should play and feel.

I played this game randomly over a weekend, and I’m so glad that I did. It’s really crazy how much of an influence this game on online culture since its release, inspiring a lot of the imagery behind the vapor wave aesthetic. Even though the mechanics of this game seem very simple, the developers found so many ways to create depth within the gameplay and keep it incredibly intense and fun. Many times, I found myself getting into the cycle of throwing myself into crazy situations, dying immediately, but then respawning to try the same thing again. While this seems stupid, I feel like the game almost wants me to do this, because when you do eventually pull off those crazy moments, it feels amazing. I feel this way mainly because there’s not much penalty for dying since you respawn so quickly. I don’t think that my way of playing is theory way to play, and that’s what’s so great about this game as well. There is so much flexibility in the way you can approach this game, and it seems like the developers have done a great job at creating a murder sandbox for the player. The story was also really good, it actually reminded me a lot of Superhot’s story which felt very appropriate for this kind of game. My only complaint was that this game felt a little bit short, but this isn’t that much of a problem since what is here is so good.

After completing the main game, I think I got all of the fun I can out of this game. That sounds a bit harsh, but I had a good time with the game while I was playing it and am simply just not interested in playing some of the end-game content. Exploring the world and filling out the pokedex is very engaging. I liked finding super cool pokemon in the hard-to-reach areas of the map and even the alpha poekomn encounters stayed fun till the end. Obviously, since it's Pokemon, it gets repetitive after a bit, which again, adds to why I'm not going to do the end game content. There was a lot of nostalgia for me playing this game because of the gen 4 pokemon present, which I grew up on. Overall, I thought it was fine. I'm being a bit more generous with the score because I enjoyed seeing the direction that this game took, and I think with some more significant changes, this could bring about a new era for Pokemon.

Even though, technically speaking, Demon’s Souls was the first soul-like game, Dark Souls brought this type of game out into the mainstream gaming culture. Having played the Demon’s Souls remake, Dark Souls improves on many of the ideas that started in the original. This game introduced the maze-like worlds that FromSoftware is known for today. The interconnected world featured in this game also happens to be one of my favorites in all of the soulsborne games. I still have such a clear mental picture in my head of how this world connects together. The gameplay itself is (obviously) the most fundamental version of what makes a game a soulslike. Slow attacks and movement and bosses that hit hard, but still feel fair overall. It’s all just so fun, and the bosses in this game do such a great job of testing your skills in a progressive way throughout the game. I thought the remastered graphics were fine, although I probably would have appreciated the original graphics more. I would be so surprised if I came back to this game at any point in my life and felt like it didn’t hold up. This is an incredibly important game in gaming, and I can see that it is for a good reason.

This was a pretty fun and quick game. I thought that the way you move your character around was pretty fun and unique. You move surprisingly fast for a giant blob of flesh, but somehow the game is still able to communicate the weight of your body slamming around the halls. There isn’t much depth to the gameplay besides sneaking around sometimes, as opposed to just bum rushing every enemy you see as fast as you can. Overall, it is a pretty fun experience and would recommend checking it out.

This game achieves so much of what it seems to set out to do, and the minor issues I had with the game, don't come close to bringing this game down from the heights it's able to achieve. Coming into this game already confused about my own political identity, this game carefully critiques many prominent ideologies across the board in a very sophisticated way. It is able to present many different ideas in ways that are understandable, and don't sugar coat the misgivings of each. With that being said, the game is also clearly not objective. The creators definitely have a bias towards left-leaning ideologies, but they still manage to turn that critical eye on themselves and I think it's good that they are upfront about that bias. All of this is to say that I think this game presents some of the best political commentary I've seen in a video game. The main story of the game, while definitely still political, focuses more on telling a genuinely great detective story. The story is about discovering not only who killed this person hanging behind a run-down hotel, but also discovering who you are and dealing with the many different influences pulling you in all different directions, much like the city you are investigating. The subconscious mechanic was a fantastic inclusion in this game and not only provides a cool mechanic to play around with, but also fits narratively with the game. The same thing goes for the personality tree, which I thought was a great RPG element which helps you get a great understanding of the character you are trying to build. During my playthrough there were points when I became frustrated about the dice roll mechanic, getting unlucky with a specific role sometimes felt unfair after I had invested so much in those specific traits I was rolling for. Besides that minor gripe, this was an absolutely fantastic game and has stuck very close with me ever since I played it.

What a totally unique game. I can't say that I've ever played a game quite like this. Part of what makes this game so different, is that it pulls from so many different genres, incorporating so many different ideas from them, while still maintaining a solid game loop which is easy to understand. The pixel art of this game is very impressive, and is a clear step up in quality from a lot of the other pixel art in other games. I love the influences art takes from anime, religion, and fantasy and blends them all together in its own unique way. The music was also pretty good. The one track that plays before a boss fight is particularly fantastic. One thing I was not crazy about was how easy the game became once you figure out how to play. At a certain point, it felt like I was this overpowered god that could never die (especially with the necromancer). This may have just been my experience with it, but I would have appreciated a new twist on the difficulty for this game, besides just seeing how long you can go. Aside from my issues with balancing, I still think that this was a very polished game and very fun to play.

I’m glad that I ended up finishing this game. I played through about half of the game and then set it down for a while, probably because I was just busy at the time. When I did come back, I ended up starting back at the beginning to play the whole game again, and I’m glad that I did. The gameplay is very very smooth, and while there definitely were points where I would get stuck on the edges I probably shouldn’t be getting stuck on, it felt really good overall. The flow of this game is really addicting. Many times after playing, I’d come out of the game feeling like everything was in slow motion, all the while my hand would be shaking uncontrollably for a solid couple minutes. The soundtrack perfectly accompanies this flow and helps immerse you in the body of a mindless killing machine. The game sticks to a really awesome hellish aesthetic, and it is all executed perfectly. With that being said, it would have been nice to see a bit more variety in the types of levels you can explore, since for the most part you’re just going through hell. Overall, I'm very glad I got around to finishing it as it has now become one of my favorite first-person shooters.

Short and sweet. This game was pretty fun while it lasted and provided a unique and relaxing experience. Given a small island sandbox, you must glide around and gather power to reach the tallest mountain on the island. The graphics were very charming and gave the game a very unique feel. The soundtrack was also very good. I could definitely see myself going back to listening to it while doing homework. It was pretty fun to glide around, but moving on the ground was kinda meh. Since you play as a penguin, it would have been cool if they implemented a sliding mechanic to travel on the ground quicker. The story was pretty wholesome and touching as well. Good game, good experience.

When I think of my favorite VR games, Half Life Alyx is always at the top of that list. Even given all of the problems with modern day VR, Half Life Alyx still makes me want to push past all of the discomfort of putting on the headset and get immersed in its world. This was the most realistic simulation of real life I’ve ever been in with VR. Picking up and throwing things feels exactly as it should, and everything that you think should be interactable is. Combat is equally as satisfying. Flinging a nearby magazine with your gravity gloves and reloading is really cool and is easy to keep track of. Part of the fun in combat is when you’re overwhelmed by enemies and you need to frantically reach for 5 things at the same time, and you still manage to find a way to get out of the situation. My biggest complaint, as with most VR games, is movement. Walking around the traditional way (continuous motion with the joystick) makes me sick very quickly, which forces me to use the teleport option, which is less than ideal. In some of the more tense parts of the game, that tension was broken because of the movement system not assisting in maintaining the intensity of the situation. It would have been nice to have only one movement system implemented which is relatively motion sickness friendly, so that the game could be designed around that one mode of movement. Despite the limitations of the hardware, Half Life: Alyx still manages to be my favorite VR game right now.

Completing this game was incredible and left me with a deep appreciation for the games' goals and style. Obviously, this game looks amazing, and hearing about the developers' commitment to achieving this style makes the results even more impressive. The way that this game tells its story is very cool and I wish more games found unique ways to involve the player in their story instead of just spitting a text document at them. I remember the twist being pretty good in the game. My only critique is of my own ability to solve the puzzles. If I remember right, you also had to remember where each of the flashbacks were, and I think that’s a mistake if that’s the case. Overall, it is a great mystery game.

This was a pretty fun game. I really enjoyed all of the unique collection of mini-games that this game is comprised of and thought it was an interesting way to deliver the story in creative little bite-sized levels. Plenty of these mini-games were very fun and memorable, but to me it seemed like some of them were half baked. Some of the stories were essentially just cutscenes, which, for the purpose of this game, work fine, but it would have been nice to see some of the creative gameplay mechanics mixed into these sections. I also really enjoyed how each of the stories progressed from the main story of exploring the house forward by revealing or unlocking a new passage through the home. The main story told as well as the smaller stories told in each of the mini-games were all pretty good. Overall, this was a very unique game, and a fun experience to play.
