As Dusk FallsBeat

Platform: Xbox Series X
Time Take: 6 Hours
I've always been a big fan of the Life is Strange/Walking Dead style games that are story and choice heavy. They feel like those old choose your own adventure type books and usually feel story focused instead of gameplay. For this reason, As Dusk Falls was on my watchlist after seeing it announced at the Xbox presser last year. I can say for sure that the game exceeded my expectations in pretty much every area.
My main concern going in was the art style and I have to admit it was really disorientating for the first 10-15 minutes but then I kind of stopped noting the stop motion style that was used. I think towards the end I actually quite liked it. The gameplay, which is basically making choices and performing quick time events, was surprisingly engaging. I was worried I would get bored of the QTEs but I found they were used well. There are also quite a few accessibility options to open the game up to more audiences.
The story follows two families whose lives intersect after a robbery gone wrong. I don't want to spoil how the story unfolded in my game but I really felt engaged to most of the characters I was in control of. For example, Vince, has a particular history in his story of being down on his luck, wanting to take control of things again and stand up for himself and I found myself naturally making decisions that pushed me in that direction. The story was really well told and unfolded at a steady pace. With the exception of one section, I never felt bored and I always wanted to see what would happen next. I do have one annoyance with the story, but it would be a massive spoiler to put in here, so I'll leave it out :)
I think a couple of things that differentiate this game from Life is Strange and the Walking Dead games are the gameplay. There is not walking around, talking to people, it is like watching a movie but making split second decisions throughout. I actually think I prefer this style far more.

This is my surprise game of 2023. Everything I saw before release didn't appeal to me, the main character seemed annoying and the gameplay repetitive. Then the reviews dropped and no one seemed to like this game. Nonetheless, I decided to give it a go when I saw it heavily discounted for Black Friday.
In Forspoken you play as Frey, a 21 year old living in New York and currently struggling. She is in the bad books with some gangs, has been charged with some crimes and is basically homeless. Some events transpire where she gets transported to the world of Athia along with a magical cuff that she can't remove. She quickly works out that she has magical powers thanks to the cuff and begins her journey to try to get back to New York. I'm surprised with how much I enjoyed the story and the characters. I actually found Frey to be intersting and play well off of Cuff. The story has some great twists and turns, the pacing at the end goes a bit haywire but overall it is really solid with a mix of comedy, drama and unexpected twists. The dialogue is at times quite cheesy (about 15% of the time) but for the most part is well acted and serves the story well.
The gameplay was really fun overall, with Frey developing a number of different styles of magic. You can work out some great strategies when switching betwen them. There is a lot more depth here than what it first appears. The traversal is fantastic and a lot of fun. At its best it rivals Spider-mans traversal but it isnt as good.
The world of Athia is probably my biggest negative. It is a huge map with a bunch of repetitive objectives. I didn't even bother trying to finish them.
Overall Forspoken is a fun game with an engaging story that was a bit hard done by at release. I think it is definitely worth picking up, especially while it is on sale.

A really enjoyable experience that is unfortunately marred by some bad techical issues (screen issues, huge frame drops, audio bugs).
The story is good, a little janky at times but has some really good highs in it. The voice acting is great, the characters are interesting and some interesting twists along the way. There is one amazing part that ties in really well with Mafia 1.
Gameplay is fun, the cover system works well and gun fighting is basic but still enjoyable. It never felt old which is a good sign. Driving and other gameplay elements work well too.
If it wasn't for the technical issues this would probably be an 8/10. I'm not usually bothered by technical issues but they are truly terrible in this.

WWE 2k24 is one of my favourite wrestling games of all time and I have been playing wrestling games since the PS1. It is such a well rounded game with a something for everyone approach.
Gameplay:
Gameplay still feels fresh after 40 plus hours, with a wide variety of moves and AI that is mostly not stupid. It remains fun and engaging and really builds on the direction 2k has been going since 2k22.
Showcase mode:
This is probably my most disappointing mode. It is cool to get a bit of a history lesson on mania but the way it is done is so repetitive and tedious. Each match has a bunch of objectives but they are usually like "perform a combo". I ended up putting it to its easiest difficulty just to get through it as quickly as possible.
Universe mode:
I haven't played this mode a whole lot but it is very similar to last year. There is a lot too this mode and I really need to take some time to sink my teeth in to it.
MyFaction:
For the first year ever I decided to give MyFaction a go. It isn't for me but I get why people like it. It essentially provides so much more content to play through. It is somewhat repetitive from what I saw but I can see it giving off that one more match vibe.
MyGM:
Most of my time has been spent in MyGM this year. It is super addictive and so much fun overall. Once you get an idea of what is required to put together a great match you can start to lose hours in this mode. I will definitely play this a whole lot more.
MyRise:
This is the storyline mode of WWE 2K24. I have only played the male story so far and thoroughly enjoyed it. The story was fun, a bit silly at times and really well thought out. It's my favourite story in a MyRise mode.
Overall, if you are a wrestling fan WWE 2K24 is a must buy. Even if you prefer AEW you can just download AEW wrestlers from the creation centre. I can't wait to see what 2K does with this franchise going forward.

Alan Wake IIBeat

Alan Wake 2 is one of the most unique and weird games I've ever played. The characters and story are all mostly great but the game direction and style is by some of the best I've ever experienced.
Story
The story starts with two FBI agents, one of whom is one of the main protagonists in the game (Saga Anderson). The FBI are investigating a murder that is linked to a cult in the small town of Bright Falls. Very quickly it delves into the supernatural with a lot of unexplained events occurring.
The second playable character is the titular Alan Wake. Wake’s sequences take place in The Dark Place where Wake has been stuck since 2010. I won't get into too much detail of the story as I don’t want to spoil things, but there are lots of twists and turns throughout.
Gameplay
The gameplay has three main elements. Action related gameplay where Saga is fighting individuals that are ‘taken’ or Wake is fighting shadows in the Dark Place. There is Sa****ind Place which is basically inside her brain where she attempts to solve the case from clues she has gathered during the game and there is Wake’s Writer’s Room where he is trying to write a story based on where he is in the game world. All 3 have some really good moments but I would say all get dull at times as well. Wake’s writers room changes the environment he is in which is a really well done feature overall. I think the Mind Place got overused towards the end of the game but I liked the concept.
Game Direction
This is my favourite part of the game. There is a mix of real life videos mixed in with the game world and it is done in such an amazing way. The use of sound is perfect and the music (one part in particular) is some of the best I’ve experienced. The game worlds are made to be creepy and there are so many good jump scares. Absolutely fantastic overall.
Overall Alan Wake 2 is a unique game that is almost perfect with a few issues at the end. Fantastic game regardless

I found this DLC to be very 'meh'. I finished it last night and I'm honestly struggling to think of anything that stood out about it. It has all the amazing gameplay and graphics of the Horizon series but nothing about the DLC stands out as a must play. If you really enjoyed the story for HFW then it is worth it as it continues that on a bit or if you love the Horizon gameplay and are craving more then jump into it. Other than that I don't really think it adds anything to the series

Definitely the best of the original trilogy in terms of platforming and overall level design. Biggest negatives are the flying and racing levels which are more frustrating than fun. I've played all three games with my 6 and 4 year old daughters watching, they really enjoyed them. A great introduction into gaming.

What an amazing game. The 2018 Spider-Man was my first platinum and I had such a good time with it. Spider-Man 2 takes everything from the first game and improves on it either from a fun factor or quality of life perspective. This game demonstrates the potential of the PS5 more than any other title currently available. The graphics are sensational, the load times non-existent and the game play is so much fun.
Gameplay:
The gameplay in Spider-Man 2 takes everything established from the first game and makes it better. The abilities you have add another dimension, everything is fast paced and the swinging/flying across the map feels perfect. Even the non-Spider-Man sections are improved and don't feel tedious any more. The side missions have more heart to them and the activities are almost all fun to do. There was one side activity I wasn't a fan of but I had no problem doing them to get the platinum.
Story:
Insomniac did such an amazing job with the story. The voice acting is fantastic and the story's overall structure and pacing felt really good. There was no point where I felt bored by it or over it at all. They take their time to establish relationships and get the player to care about the characters. I think this is the best story in a super hero video game that has been made so far.
Getting the Platinum:
I enjoyed every minute of the platinum, nothing is missable and you basically clear out the map of activities once your complete the main mission. There are a couple of in fight trophies required that I would recommend doing during the story just so you have sufficient enemies to take out.
Set pieces:
I wanted this to be its own section because earlier this year I was playing Jedi Survivor which has an amazing set piece moment in it. I felt like that was one of the best experiences I had had during a set piece. Spider-Man 2 has at least 5 set pieces that beat that moment in Jedi Survivor for me.

Cocoon is an amazing little puzzle game from tbe developers that made Inside and Limbo. It is a relatively relaxing games but has some great genre bending moments.
I found it to be one of the most intuitive games I've played where there is seemingly little direction but somehow you always know the right way to go. As with most puzzle games they need to be challenging but not impossible, I found even on the hardest puzzles I found them difficult but not in a frustrating way. They promote creativity and encourage the player to try different things.
Something I really liked was the music, particularly the little musical queues that subtly play when you do something correct. It's such a nice way to guide the player.
This one is definitely a strong recommend, particularly if you are looking for something a bit more relaxing.

I played Cyberpunk last year and really enjoyed it. It wasn't perfect, I had issues with the story but it was a good game. Phantom Liberty, along with the 2.0 update finally lets Cyberpunk live up to the hype. The story is compelling, graphics are amazing and the gameplay is everything I'd hoped for. The thing that makes it such a special game is just the little things. The world feels lived in, I love how the AI moves around during cutscenes and just how 'real' everything feels.
Positives:
One thing that really stood out for me was Idris Elba. What an actor! I was worried he would only be in the expansion for a little bit, but he is one of the main characters and transitioned to the world of video games perfectly. CD Projekt Red seem to do a great job of getting these big stars in and making it work better than any other studio at the moment.
The gameplay is also a shining star here. I primarily played with a sword, the movement felt so smooth and some of the actions are just breathtaking. They absolutely nailed it.
The story is fantastic and compelling. Some of the missions are going to be incredibly memorable. I love anything with a heist feel to it and this definitely had that.
Negatives:
I only have one real negative, but it is also a pretty major spoiler so I won't go into detail :)

This is an interesting game to give impressions of. I'm someone that likes a gripping story and probably prefer linear games. Starfield has a massive scope and really encourages the player to just go an explore and see what happens. From my perspective it was at times a 5/10 and at its best was a 9/10. I think the overall experience is good, but slightly underwhelming.
Pros:
-Exploring planets is interesting (when they aren't empty)
- Huge amount of things to do
- Gunplay is enjoyable
- Graphics are great
- The music is excellent. It sounds amazing with a good pair of headphones
- Some really good side missions
Mids:
- The persuasion system just feels odd in the way it works
- A lot of planets just feel barron
- The voice acting is mostly good
- The different ammo types and where to buy them is confusing
Cons:
- The main story feels like one gigantic fetch quest. I like how they tie it together but getting there was pretty boring
- Side characters are all pretty boring and annoying
- Fighting with ships in space is frustrating and I hated it overall
- The classic Bethesda zoom in on whoever you are talking to is outdated and really kills any atmosphere
- The inventory system is terrible and annoying. To the extent that I just stopped picking up items after a few hours
- The game does a pretty bad job at explaining systems and it is quite daunting
- The way to get from planet to planet is annoying and basically menu based
- Exploring cities is confusing with no mini map
I think Starfield is good. I have friends that absolutely love it. I think it just isn't my type of game. It feels outdated and fails to take the leap that I think Bethesda needed to for this game.

Crash Bandicoot has some great level design and was so revolutionary for its time. I have to say coming back to it, it was waaaaay more frustrating than I remembered. It is the Fifa of platforming with how annoyed I got. Just little things like missing a jump or panicking when I shouldn't. It is mainly my fault but definitely a bit of the game too.
Overall, it is a classic that was fun to come back to but I don't plan to play again any time soon

My history with the Far Cry would be quite similar to a lot of people in that I:
Never played the original
Didn't like 2
Loved 3
Enjoyed 4
Was completely and utterly burnt out by the gameplay loop to the extent that I couldn't get into any of the side games or Far Cry 5.
That brings us to Far Cry 6. I bought this game at launch, mainly because of Gus Fring playing the bad guy but about an hour in felt that same fatigue I felt when I tried to play 5. I later traded it in and expected to never play it again. Well, I decided to give Far Cry 6 another go once it came to the PS+ Extra tier and I was pleasantly surprised to not feel any of that fatigue or burn out towards the Far Cry series.
In Far Cry 6 you play as Dani Rojas (football is life) on the island of Yara that is run by an evil dictator Antón Castillo (Played by Giancarlo Esposito's). Dani is keen to just leave Yara behind but after the opening events finds herself as the main guerilla making a stand. You are tasked with recruiting three separate groups to combine and take down Castillo. The story is really solid with good performances overall. I played as the female Dani and found her character to be really fun overall.
The gameplay is very much more Far Cry with some unnecessary additions. Like you can choose to have different bullet types but ultimately armour piercing bullets is all you really need. There is also a weapon called a Supremo, which is basically a super powered back pack that can fire missiles among other things. It is a lot of fun. I will say, despite there being a bunch of crazy weapons you can make, I got a good rifle and then really didn't feel the need to mix it up. It kind of meant that levelling up was redundant overall.
I would say that Far Cry 6 is my second favourite Far Cry game. It doesn't reinvent the wheel but the setting and story do enough to set it apart from the others.

This was my first ever Ratchet and Clank video game. I decided to play it after subbing to PS+ and I'd heard good things. I remember it winning Kinda Funny's GOTY and always thought that was odd given the other games that game out in 2021 but I completely get it now. I loved this game.
From the get go I waited for me feel bored and felt like I may not be the target audience. In my 14 hours of play I never felt bored or frustrated, I'm actually thinking about doing a new game + because it is such a fun experience. The characters are great, the guns are great, the traversal and world building is great. I actually have a hard time thinking of any negatives for this one.
Insomniac is quickly becoming one of my favourite developers, this is the 3rd game of theirs that I have platinumed (they do trophy lists perfectly) and I've only platinumed 7 games in total. They just have the perfect gameplay loop and never let anything get stale.
This is a fantastic game that I would absolutely recommend.
