This game is like if Resident Evil got rid of all of its combat and dialed the puzzles up all the way. Or like an expansive 15 hour long escape room that gradually intensifies in difficulty as you grasp the way the puzzle-maker(s) think. It also has the open-world-ish nature of something like The Witness, which saves you from banging your head against the same thing over and over as you can hop between puzzles and come back to something you were previously stuck on with a fresh perspective.
I also found the story satisfying in the end, which I wasn't particularly invested in for a good deal of the game, but once it becomes clearer what is happening and has happened, the plot elements take on new and interesting perspectives. Wonderful game overall!

I got really sucked into this game for a good 25 hours. I'll probably keep picking it up from time to time. It's extremely fun to learn how to build decks and find synergies but as I got into the higher difficulties, it lost its spark a bit for me. At those difficulties, it felt like runs could go south due to bad luck too easily and I began losing motivation to keep putting time into it.

This is a review as a first time player of Alan Wake, not considering the remaster versus the original.
For the negatives, the combat was repetitive and happened too often, but as someone who doesn't enjoy third person shooters in general, I found this game to have more fun combat than others that I've played for the story (e.g. The Last of Us).
On the positive side, this game's story is amazing and engrossing. My wife watched some of my playthrough and every day would ask me what she had missed when I played when she wasn't around, which rarely happens. It's a great blend of horror, thriller, comedy, and character study, and explores themes of creativity and mental health. I was absolutely hooked and cannot wait to play the second one and to dive into more Remedy games.

The best video game representation of deduction I've experienced. I love that it's separated into several bite-sized chapters which all come together for one main plot. I also love that not every chapter is a "whodunit" murder mystery to solve, and that even when presented with several whodunits, the ways that you examine the evidence always changes from one chapter to the next.

The mechanic of finding pages to the instruction manual is such a fun piece of the game and the level design is amazing for the exploration and secret paths it reveals. However, for me the entire experience is soured by the combat which I could not stand and which I found far too difficult to be enjoyable. Props to the dev for putting in accessibility options that let you get through the game if you're in a similar boat, but even with those on, the game is dragged down by the combat sequences since you do still have to often defeat enemies or bosses to move forward.

This game presents a control scheme you have no prior experience with and asks you to learn it then slowly master it in order to get past an increasingly difficult obstacle course. There are opportunities to fall and lose huge chunks of progress that can feel demoralizing at first, but when you pick yourself back up and restart, you'll be in awe at how much better you are at playing the game and find renewed confidence instead. Stretches of the game that took me hours to clear the first time I encountered them could take me less than a minute by the end of my first run. This made for an absolutely addictive learning curve for me. So far I've only beaten it once but I started a second run immediately after and look forward to seeing how fast I can clear the mountain on repeat playthroughs. This game isn't for everybody but if it's for you, you'll probably find it a masterpiece.

A fun and faithful revisit to the Classicvania style that captures what made those games so fun. It eases up the difficulty slightly but retains a healthy challenge, and offers difficulty options for you to find your sweet spot. It also features levels with branching paths to encourage replays.

This is a very good, short and cozy puzzle game. The puzzles are hard enough to keep you interested but not to frustrate you.
My one gripe with the game is that it would be good to be able to view clues from your journal instead of having to remember where they were and backtracking each time you want to re-read them, but the areas you're working in are small enough that it's not too much of a pain.

This game took me by surprise and is becoming one of my favorite games. I play nearly exclusively single player, and don't often play shooters, but this game has its hooks in me.
I have regular weekly sessions with 2 groups of friends, and still log on between those to play solo or with random groups. There are subtle differences in this game's mechanics that make it really stand out compared to other shooters I've played. Whether it's reloads discarding your unused ammo, recoil and accuracy being drastically changed by movement and stance, or the chaos brought on by friendly fire, I think the theme that ties everything together is a constant stream of risk/rewar*****ysis going on at both an individual and group strategy level.
It sounds trite to say, but this game truly made me remember why I loved playing games as a kid. There is progression to unlock new weapons and abilities, but even without that, this game would have me hooked. It's pure fun that seems simple on the surface but has enough complexity to make sure you're always learning and stretching your abilities.

Starting with the positives, the combat is really fun and engaging and the immersion of the exploration is fantastic, with the best moments of the game by far being the stories that are generated as you get from place to place.
For the negatives, I never encountered a piece of the main or side story that grabbed me, and the locations dotting the map feel like bland settings to host the fun combat, with no extrinsic reward for your exploration. Ultimately, I put this one down after several hours.
However, from reading positive reviews, your mileage will definitely vary. Nearly every positive review I read has the same negative points I saw but weighs them much lower. This game reminds me of Breath of the Wild, where I do love certain parts of it, but the whole experience it creates is just not for me. Like BotW, if you love the intrinsic reward of exploration, this one could very well be up your alley.

Cool settings and art throughout. I found some enemy designs to be irritating, especially in the 5th level. Overall though, a fun classicvania with cool boss fights. There's some very interesting experimentation in the levels as well, especially in the final one.

This game is compared to Disco Elysium a lot, but I recommend forgetting that comparison before playing. This game feels much more linear in its storytelling than Disco Elysium ever did, though towards the end I did feel like some of my choices had tangible consequences.
The pacing feels a bit sluggish in the first half of the game. For the most part you are getting introduced to threads that becomes important to the main story in the end, but the threads didn't have much narrative pull to me until they started to connect to each other. Once I hit the midway point, it was much smoother and more intriguing.
Not a bad first effort from this studio and I'll check out what they put out next.

This game is such a a fun survival horror experience. Exploring the mansion is like an intense, creepy version of a metroidvania. It's fairly short but feels like just the right length for the experience.
My only gripe with this game was its boss encounters, which I found frustrating, not fun, and a complete shift from the feel of the rest of the game. Luckily, these were infrequent occurrences so did not bring down the game much.

Strong contender for my favorite game of all time. The story and cast of characters are utterly engrossing. It can be a bit of a cliche to say, but this is the first time that a world in a video game has truly felt alive to me. I'm normally turned off by open world design but never got tired of spending time in this world after a roughly 75 hour playthrough. I also don't normally notice music in a game but the soundtrack in this game blew me away.
The pace of the game may put some people off, but I can't imagine the story being told as well without it. The one negative I would give is that combat-based missions can be repetitive and have too many enemies, but the positives far outweigh that in my mind. I'll look back on this game very fondly.

Great worldbuilding and writing but I could not stand the combat in this game. Probably more a reflection of my tastes than Remedy's execution but as someone who loved both Alan Wake games, I wish I could've clicked with this one.
