One thing to keep in mind is we're providing you with multiple reviews and multiple scores. To keep things simple (for you and for us), we're limiting this to one Additional Take. The Additional Take reviewer will have his or her score listed directly after their opinion. The Final Score is not affected by this and is directly determined by the Main Reviewer (who is listed in the article's byline).
Any time you feel like commenting on our reviews, you may. Our weekly review index, which is published late Wednesday night, has a comment section. Every review we publish does as well (look below). You can also find our message boards by clicking the link on the left-hand side. Enjoy!
The best adjective you can use to describe a series like Invincible would be "fun". It's a more traditional comic book series that never takes itself too seriously, which is becoming more a rarity every day. Robert Kirkman created a strong, complex character in Mark Grayson that is nearing the 50th issue milestone. Unfortunately, Kirkman also seems content to tread water in terms of plot until he officially reaches that issue.
It's not that the issue is all that bad, but it's not really moving any of the lingering plotlines forward beyond the cursory mention. The plot definitely qualifies as random villain-of-the-week caliber. Kirkman does liven it up with some extreme Image cross promotion though. Mixed into the action are characters from various related Image series, the marketing of which is just a bit shameless. Luckily, Kirkman handles it in such a way to draw a laugh instead of a long sigh. Of course, special attention is paid to the Astounding Wolf-Man, another Kirkman property.
Besides that, nothing of consequence really occurs. If you're a huge Invincible fan, this'll be a completely satisfying arc, since it's following a tried and true formula. This is especially true when Ryan Ottley's consistently impressive art is added to the equation. If you're more of a casual fan though, you might be better served just holding out until issue 50 rolls around, since I'm assuming the train will be running at full speed after that.
